Salutations fellow PbP aficionados!

Heya!

Really excited to have stumbled across this community, and equally excited about getting started writing and sharing some fantastic stories with you all! I've done some PbP here and there for a few years but nothing with any kind of established structure or format, so I'm definitely looking forward to the change of pace. I love writing and storytelling very much and it's a pretty consistent hobby of mine, so I'm thrilled to merge the passion of creative storytelling with the mechanics of some wonderful game systems.

I'm pretty familiar with the ruleset of DnD 5e and it's various ins-and-outs, so that would probably be where I was most comfortable starting until I got the hang of the website and it's utilities a little better. Funny thing is though; I've actually never played DnD! I have always wanted to, very badly in all honesty, but I've never been able to find that combination of time, location and willing participants to make it happen. All of my DnD knowledge and experience comes from me solo-nerding out and just reading the handbooks and watching TTRPG content on YouTube and Twitch. I'm hopeful that this community may actually be my chance to finally play some DnD with people!

Anyway, super grateful to be here and can't wait to get to know you all a little better. Looking forward to writing and reading along with you!

Welcome!

Hope you didn't stub a toe or anything when you stumbled over us. That was probably Squeak, my little brother leaves things on the floor all the time. You don't want to know what things, though.

Happy that you joined us, and hope you have fun with 5e. Very popular system, lots of games and gamers. Happy playing!

Welcome to the site. To get a solid intro on the forum way of playing, I would suggest doing the New Player Solo Game. It's not a real solo but one to one with a GM who will guide you through the forum codes and conventions using a fun little adventure. Even with a bandaged toe it should be doable.

BTW traveler is another popular game system here.

Thanks for the welcome Dworin! Total honesty; I had never heard of the Traveller game! Most of my exposure to TTRPG-to-Post is DnD related or just other insulated PbP websites. Traveler is my handle on Discord as well as DnD Beyond, plus it's just kind of a go-to online handle for me due to my RL tendencies haha, so I was surprised when I saw the name of the game here on the forums. Hope its not an issue.

I appreciate you pointing me in the direction of the New Gamers solo game section! I was actually poking around already and I got a request up for the Mage Newby adventure posted, so hopefully a helpful individual picks up the request and is willing to help show me the ropes a bit.

Thanks again for the welcome and the advice though! Hope to write and adventure with you in the near future.

Welcome, Traveler! What a cool username you've nabbed there.

I've played DnD both over tabletop and PbP and I've found the experiences drastically different (in a bunch of good ways). PbP allows for so much more roleplaying and immersion than tabletop, but it is also much, much slower which can be good for busy schedules. It should be a great medium to officially try your hand at that roleplaying system, or others.

I hope you enjoy the site!

Thanks Leviticus! Your username is pretty great as well, so I appreciate the compliment

I'm very excited about the increased RP and storytelling aspect of the game that PbP can offer. My experience prior to this has been with systems that simulated a game structure by recording advancement experience and requiring so much to advance and so forth, but the mechanics of the "game" were entirely based on one's ability to RP the scenario accurately and creatively to reflect what their character could or couldn't do. I really enjoyed this as it was fantastic writing exercise and really encouraged creative problem solving and interpersonal maneuvering, but I'm equally excited about the idea of throwing tangible chance and odds into mix with the dice rolls. Combined with the incredible structure and established world lore of DnD, I know it's sure to be a blast! Im even thrilled to explore people's homebrew creations or game systems I'm not yet familiar with. It's all good!

I really appreciate how welcoming everyone is here. It's wonderful to have found this community and I'm ready for more!

(Even if it means more nat 1's lol )

Hi, Traveler! Welcome to the site! I see you have put in a request for your new player solo game. Good on you!
What type of character are you planning to create for that adventure?

Hiya bananabadger! Thanks for the welcome and for noticing the NPSG request!

I had a couple ideas in mind for the first character I'd make, but I think I'm pretty settled on a concept. I want to keep it fairly simple and straightforward to begin with; an archetype that could be mechanically effective under various conditions such as handbook restrictions or unconventional campaign settings, and one that most parties would benefit from regardless of composition. As much as reasonably possible, at any rate. Plus, I wanted to create something that'd be fun to RP, of course! So I'm thinking of a Half-Orc Barbarian straight down the conventional melee tank line. Two-handed axe wielder, eventual Path of the Totem Warrior, strength and constitution-based bag of damage absorption and general viciousness. If a Half-Orc wasn't allowed, I'd probably choose Human and just make a few minor tweaks to the name/backstory of the character, but I'd leave the bones of the concept intact.

Protagonist is a Half-Orc in name only; their Orcish lineage asserting itself as the dominant genetic contributor early and emphatically. Massively built and heavy with muscle, they numbered among their remote clan's hunter caste from a young age and quickly found their niche in defending their brethren from the various beasts that stalked the wild and hunted the hunters. It felt good to be useful, to be brave and mighty, and bold deeds washed the shame of mingled blood from the eyes of all but the most judgmental of the tribe's number. Fell times descended upon the clan however, and the ravages of tribal in-fighting and raiding, as well as the general unforgiving nature of their environment, began to erode the tribe's strength. In desperation the elders turned to they whom had the blood of two worlds in their veins, and whose ever-growing might and resilience may carry them into the world at large. This was a last gambit attempt to gain glory and wealth for the tribe in order to stave off the coming end. So, this stalwart warrior set off into unknown realms to find where strength was needed, where grit could be sold, and where they could immortalize their clan's name, and their own, into legend.

Something like that. Jumping off point, at any rate. Again, depending on any sort of stipulations like "X-race/class/subclass not allowed" and so forth, I'd just change a few things around to make the idea suit the game. Just something simple, fun, and hopefully useful in a plethora of campaigns and parties.

Hey Traveler!
Welcome aboard. I've been here about a month and it's maybe the 5th platform I've played on. So far it's my favorite. The NPSG alone shows how involved, invested and inclusive the community is. You can sink-or-swim if you want, but that's not the expectation here.
I hope to see you around, and I love a CS Lewis quotation! I took a grad seminar on him once upon a time.

Hiya ratchett! Thanks for the welcome and for your personal insight on the community! Just from my own limited experience and exposure, I'd already say I'd have to agree with you on how invested and inclusive the community here is and I'm really digging it. I'm definitely looking forward to the NPSG! I really want to enrich the storytelling and adventuring experience with anyone I'm lucky enough to play and write with, so I'm committed to learning the finer aspects of the bbcode/PbP structure as well as I can in order to really gel with my fellow players. I have faith that people will be patient and forgiving while I'm still learning, but out of respect for that understanding I want to do my part to become familiar as quickly as I can.

Plus it just sounds fun of course! Bring on Mage Newby!

Once you get used to the pace this place is great, lots of DnD, lots of other stuff too and not just regular games (check out the race and outplay)
