Jhorn Sarkany
right-aligned image

The newcomer joins the group with their travels, and naturally they have a fair amount of questions. Understandable, considering how many they had when they first arrived to this land. And the longer we stay here, mulls Jhorn, The more questions we have...

Throwing the last of the pelts on top of Jacob, he gives the donkey a friendly pat on his head and his attempt at a friendly scowl before accepting his rations. At Marybeth's question as to how long they have been together, Jhorn bites into his apple first and chews before replying. "Most of us," he says simply, gesturing with his apple towards his companions, "Quite a while. Before we found ourselves here, in Barovia. Same way you did. Mist." Then, gesturing towards Ismark and Ireena, he says "We're helping them get somewhere, for now at least."

Jhorn mulls on the strange landscape as told to them by the Vistani, but admires it in its own way. Being a soldier, he has spent a fair amount of time outdoors on maneuvers, and there was always something serene about seeing the beauty around them that the gods made. Now that he has devoted himself to Lathander, he has an even deeper respect and appreciation for what the Morninglord provides them. Even a monster like Jhorn was can get redemption through him - now that's a gift.

Seeing the bridge, Jhorn is glad they didn't take it. "Glad we went this way, then," he remarks. "Considering our past troubles, the last thing we would want is to get trapped on the bridge with nowhere to go." The site the group picked is a fine one, and with Ismark eager to cook, Jhorn decides to begin the mundane task of gathering firewood to get their fire started. Once everyone seems to be getting settled, the quiet man with the scarred appearance begins fanning out to check the area for any suitable wood they can use to get a nice warm fire going.

The song Halas played, reminded Beth of better days. Days when she didn’t have to travel to keep herself fed and ahead of anyone that was pursuing her. She shooke her head to clear the dark memories from her mind. At least she could relax slightly knowing she was nowhere near her old home, but there were new dangers in Barovia that she needed to watch out for, besides the Dire Wolves.

She settled into the pace as they resumed their walk along the river. She fell more towards the back than she would have liked but it was the speed she could maintain with the bite to her leg. The sun did not get brighter, nor did the clouds clear. Beth made a mental note that if she saw anything useful in the flora she needed to grab it. This place was not welcoming in anyway and if they were to continue to survive then any medicinal plants they came across needed to be collected.

AS the high and narrow bridge was pointed out, she agreed with Jhorn, ‘I am as well. I wouldn’t be alive if you had chosen the other route.”

A wide dry spot in the river bed was selected for camp. The walking had not been overly strenuous but to her leg it felt like they had walked twice as far. She settled on the ground and began to change the bandage on her leg and replaced the dirty one with a clean one. Beth then washed the old one in the river and set it to dry next to the cooking fire.

“I don’t mind taking part in the watch rotation,”
Beth offered as the topic was starting to be discussed among the others while camp was made and the stew was started. “I mean as long as it doesn’t disrupt whatever flow you already have.”

Halas Fogbarrel

Halas plopped down on the ground near the campfire with Polly who he had been assigned watch with. "Suppose I'm just to make sure you don't fall asleep cause its not like I can see anything out there in the dark," he commented as a way to make conversation. He wasn't one to sit still or quietly. If he could have, he would have passed the time playing his bandore but figured he might get stabbed if he woke anyone with his playing.

Instead he tried to think up a game the pair could play in the interim. "Ok, so I say a real person's name and then you have to say another real person's name but your person's first name has to start with the first letter of my person's last name. Then, I have to reciprocate. Ok? Ready? I'll go first. Kriga Moonmusk, leader of the Blue Bear Clan in the Delimbiyr Vale. I hear she gets carried around on a fur covered litter."

"Have you ever fought against any Uthgardt?"

Polly raised an eyebrow at Halas, smirking a little at his suggestion for them to play a game. 'Never been that far north,' she claimed with a shrug. 'The way you tell it, she has to be in bad shape. She doesn't sound like much like a leader to me. Leaders don't make their people carry them around like a child,' Polly said resolutely. Then, she regarded Halas curiously. 'Why?' she asked. 'Is that where you're from?'

'My turn,' she announced. Thinking for a moment, Polly slowly shook her head, the grinned. 'Moryn Nolani,' she finally offered. 'A boy I used to know, back home. Great with horses, pigs, any animal really. Prettier face than most, broad shoulders, broad smile.' She then took her flask, unscrewing the cap. 'Great kisser. Or so the other girls told me,' Polly added dejectedly, before taking a swig of her hell-brew.

'Truth is, I don't know a lot of celebrities, or leaders,' Polly admitted. 'But if we're talking about real, important people, to me that's the people I grew up with.' She smiled wistfully, staring into the fire before looking up again. 'Your turn. An "n" for you, yeah?'

Tser Falls Camp
left-aligned image
Barry finds himself quite glad that he'd agreed to take some of Ireena's possessions on Dixie for the journey. Well, he could hardly refuse his employer anyways, but much of her excess baggage was indeed a boon to the party this night. The large iron cookpot had been filled with ten simple wooden bowls and spoons, a few tiny pouches of some mixed herbs and seasonings, a large wooden ladle, and a cleverly collapsible tripod to hang the pot over the fire with. The baroness thanks Aender extravagantly for his aid in the meal prep and catches Jhorn's eye to nod in thanks and approval for his efforts in gathering wood as he begins preparing the fire. As soon as the pot is over the flames, the stew's heavenly smell drifts forth to make you all grateful to skip another meal of jerky and hard cheese. Ismark produces a couple gallon-size skins of wine and begins passing them about, gesturing to keep them moving about the circle. Ireena and Ismark both remove their armor for comfort - and you can see the weariness in both as they take their seats amongst you - yet you notice they keep their weapons close to hand.

The stew begins to softly bubble and Ireena stirs in some more water and a bit of the wine. She attempts to engage a few of you in conversation and even tries to elicit a story from someone, but most seem lost in their own musings and give clipped responses. If the Vistani can't get this group to be festive, what chance do I have? With a sigh of resignation, Ireena doles out the delicious stew. Most of you've not eaten wolf before, but it turns out that the only problem with it was knowing what it was beforehand. Being seasoned adventurers and no strangers to privation, you're easily able to get around your own heads to fill your bellies with what's readily available. Everyone is tired and all except Polly and Halas go to their blankets after the meal.

The gloomy, mist-filled dawn finds you all rested after a nearly uneventful night. During the final hour of the last watch, Mara heard the sudden flapping of wings and a gasp from Ireena. "It was just a Raven," she explains to the statuesque warrior. "It must have been sitting up there watching us the whole night, or we would have noticed it land. Still, they say ravens are good luck - and killing one will bring the worst of curses to your entire bloodline."

Descending the Falls (much steeper than it looks in the stock photo)
right-aligned image
Much of the morning's mist lifts after an hour. During that time, Ireena reheats the remnants of the stew for a hot breakfast before cleaning all the dishes in the river and packing them back onto Dixie."This next leg of the journey will likely be the most difficult, at least as far as the terrain is concerned." Ismark is addressing the party, "it's the goat trail I spoke of the other night. We're going to need to tie ourselves together into small groups of two or three in case one person slips, the other one or two will have a chance of catching them. The problem is that they can also be pulled down with the others they're tied to. The mules could present a real problem if they're the ones to slip, so I'll leave it up to you if you want to include them in the tying."

OOC: What we have here is something of an ability-check mini-game, beginning with a difficult math puzzle for your glorious leader: Barry. He's going to decide who's tied to whom and give me a list before we can begin. Here's the parameters:
- The descent will take 4 hours with slip (acrobatics) checks made every 30 minutes at DC12. Each member will make their slip check and have any possible rescue resolved before the next tied member of their group checks for a slip. Remember who's tied to you! People may be rolling out of order that belong in different groups. Only the order within your own group matters. Once every group has been resolved, we move on to the next 30 minute round.

- If a slip occurs, those tied to the slipper make an athletics check adding combined adjusted roll totals vs the falling person's weight DC1 per 15 lbs. (a 150 pounder is a DC10). The falling person can succeed on their own DC15 athletics check to remove 5 from the DC of being recovered. I am granting Ireena and Ismark 10 luck points each, the mules and Lucian 5 each. The mules are 400lbs each, but have the sure-footed ability that gives them advantage on each and every roll in this mini-game. I need AN and DS to make the rolls for their own mules, tied or not. You (and only you two) may use your own character's luck points for your own mules at a 1 to 1 ratio rather than 2 to 1.

- Although not vertical, a fall will cause 1d8 damage for every 20 minutes remaining in the descent, as you will continue tumbling and sliding until you hit bottom.

- Game thread posts aren't necessary. All rolls will go in the dice thread where I'll try and place markers (or the next person to roll, please place the marker) to define/separate each of the full 20 minute rounds. If you slip (fail your DC12 acrobatics), immediately roll an athletics to see if you remove 5 from your rescuer's DC. There will be no such thing as critical fails or successes as these are ability checks and not attack rolls.

- Please EVERYONE try to check in frequently and make your die rolls if needed. I don't want this to take a month or more when all we're needing is a quick dice roll and possible use of luck points. For those on top of things, feel free to enter prompts in the dice thread about who's roll is needed next to finish a 20 minute round. 2 to 3 days of the challenge waiting on you and I'll make your rolls and use your luck points as I see fit in order to keep things moving. If the game waits 2 to 3 days on me because I'm extra busy or something, too damn bad!

- As soon as Azure Nokori gets the groupings together, we can start. @AN please post that in the OOC thread.

”You call that a trail?” Mara exclaimed, as much as asked, as she stared back up the falls they had just descended, rubbing her bruised backside. She wasn’t sure whether landing on the right side every time she fell was good or bad, but that’s how her luck had gone the whole way down. The half-orc straightened out her mail hauberk and hefted her magical halberd, ”Next time we take the nice road.”

Limping around the flat ground to get everything stretched out and feeling okay, Mara eventually noticed the amulet around her neck had found its way out from under shirt and padding and mail to lay against the links of her armour. The five-stringed harp of Milil, wrought in silver, was the only thing she still had of her hometown; a parting gift from her mother as she left on her adventures. It certainly couldn’t have been an easy thing for the woman to find, and seeing it brought back warm memories of a time before this life. The grimace of pain had faded entirely to a faint smile, and Mara lifted the symbol to her lips for a brief moment before hiding it back beneath the layers of armour that kept her safe.

”Is everyone okay?” she asked as she continued limping about, hoping this Vallaki had healing available for travellers, while shooting daggers in the direction of those who'd flown down on a mountain breeze. It was not anger she felt though, but jealousy, as she envied those who could take the skies with such ease, but at the very least it brought a beautiful thought to mind from an old poem she'd heard and she shared her honest talent for the first time since leaving Ismark's village:

"We wanderers, ever seeking the lonelier way, begin no day where we have ended another day; and no sunrise finds us where sunset left us.
Even while the earth sleeps we travel.
We are the seeds of the tenacious plant, and it is in our ripeness and our fullness of heart that we are given to the wind and are scattered."

Halas Fogbarrel
right-aligned image
The journey down the cascades was slippery, dangerous and harrowing...for everyone but Halas and Lucien. A few notes strummed on the bandalore and the pair were able to drift effortlessly to the waiting ground below. It afforded them the opportunity to observe all the slipping, sliding, and crashing that took place as the rest of the crew made their way down the obstacle. If the stakes had been lower, Halas would have been laughing the entire time but he knew better than to make fun at the hardship of others. Besides, if he were laughing and someone fell and shattered a tibia, it would be a bad look for the bard. So, he and Lucien gathered some stones and tried to throw them off of another stone on the far side of the river to pass the time while the others made their way to their location.

Jhorn Sarkany
right-aligned image

Jhorn is characteristically quiet during the descent, but from the sweat on his face and the flushness of his cheeks he definitely expended some effort during the climb. There was a few close calls - the soldier is not exactly light on his feet, and combined with his armor he is far from graceful. More than a few times he lets a few curses go. His strength comes in handy several times, however, and he feels good about that. Fortunately, through the ropes tied to his companions he is now down at the bottom in one piece. Putting a hand on Polly's shoulder and thanking her, he makes his way around to the others, asking them how they feel in his soft gravelly voice. At Mara's question, Jhorn gives her his usual ghost of a smile and replies "Better now that I'm on the bottom."

Polly Titchwillow
right-aligned image

Polly felt right at home on the craggy, mountaineous slope. While her childhood had been spent in the swamps, she had spent most of her teenage years in the mountains surrounding the dreaming blossom abbey. Situated high in the Giant's Run mountains, much of Polly's early training with the order had consisted of scaling rock walls and descending along narrow, uneven paths most experienced mountaineers would not dare cross. This descent, while unpleasant, reminded her of home. Her feet sought out the most stable of stone surfaces unerringly, forcing the monk's mind to focus on the here and now. It was an almost peaceful experience, the Hexblood finding herself wholly in the moment, with naught but survival and balance on her side.

It was frustrating, then, that the pair tethered to her by rope proved far less graceful. More than once Polly was roused from her calm, quiet descend by the sound of sliding pebbles, Jacob's fearful braying and Jhorn's angry curses. Ad each time, Polly had to quickkly shift her balance, find a foothold strong enough to allow her to keep from being pulled down with the two. Fortunately, it seemed like what Jhorn and Jacob missed in grace, they made up for in strength and weight. Every time Jacob lost his balance, Jhorn kept the animal from falling with a powerful tug on the rope which connected them- a feat Polly would not have been able to perform herself. And whenever Jhorn slipped, the mule stubbornly stood its ground, simply refusing to be dragged down by the warrior.

After an enervating four hours, the trio finally found its way to the bottom of the cliff, where her friends stood waiting. 'Well,' she said, smirking despite her heavy breathing. 'No risk of there being any mountain goats in either of your bloodlines, I suppose.' Panting, she walked over to Jacob, pressing her forehead against the mule's. 'Good job, Jacob,' she commended the animal, pulling one of the fresher turnips from her saddlebags and proferring it to the mule, who ate the treat with great enthusiasm.

'That it?' she asked, squinting as she looked back up the narrow path. 'Everybody made it down safely? Nobody hurt?' Looking at the road ahead, she placed her hands on her hips and tried to steady her breathing. 'You guys need a breather after that climb, or...?'

With everyone now at the bottom, the group shared their dislike for the chosen path while catching their breath...all except Barry.
"...I'm gonna have to put some spin of this. We can't be so put out by what's 1) a success and 2) just walking... He put on his best smile again and took in a deep, theatrical breath of low altitude air.
"Woooo. Now wasn't that something!?" he said with thrill in his voice. "Boys, you missed a real challenge. Really got the blood pumping. Not sure what all the worry was about really."
...I hope that was encouraging. If we're going to take down a vampire lord I think much tougher things will be coming our way than a steep path...
To be honest with himself, it was damn scary, but he wasn't going to admit that to anyone. At least Kallemvor had his back the whole way down...and to think about it, Mara and Dixie too. "We are a formidable team, aren't we!? You lot! That was some damn good team work!"
..I sure hope this is inspirational or else I'm just gonna sound like a sarcastic pri**...

Nice Bottom!
left-aligned image
Navigating the goat trail would have been stressful enough, but with all the slips and near-death experiences, everyone is physically drained by the time they reach bottom. Back muscles that had been stress-clinched during the descent now sag into tired relief. Even your brains seem wrung-out like a dishrag after producing adrenaline for such an extended period. That is, everyone except Halas, Lucian, and Aender, who'd been waiting in a tree near the foot of the waterfall.

right-aligned image
In the same tree as Lucian, Halas had been playing a simple game with the boy to pass time when he became very grateful indeed for the precaution of their elevated perch. A pack of nine dire wolves trotted unhurriedly from the dense forest and the Halfling quickly hushed Lucian, who's eyes widened at the sight. It quickly became apparent that the beasts were just here for the water as they began drinking from the pool. They looked around a bit, drank again, and then finally departed whence they'd come. It was a tense ten minutes or so, but the wolves had remained oblivious to the presence of others.

Reunited at the bottom, Halas heard with some trepidation Ismark say, "into those trees there, North by Northwest is the route we need to take from here." The baron's son had gestured towards a tiny game trail, the same one on which the dire wolves had departed not an hour past.
OOCI need 5 luck rolls - for Mara, Jhorn, Halas, Polly, and Barry. Please put them in the dice thread, then make the recording adjustments in your stats and CS as you post next. While tired, I'm not seeing any game-related benefits of a SR. However, I'm not looking to ever rest-block you. Anytime you want to sit for an hour or even make camp for the night, simply say so.

The “Goat trail” as it had been identified, had been no more than series of narrow ledges that they all had to balance on with a sheer drop before them that made it all the more terrifying on the decent. Beth could hear cursing and braying from the mules when they shifted too much, rocks skittering down the cliff side. She dared not to take her eyes off the ledge infront of her, lest she frighten herself from the height or become too worried about the other groups ahead and behind.

Marybeth had been paired with the siblings, she had hardly spoken to them beyond having her leg looked at, and to rely on their skills to help get her down. Though she weighed nearly nothing compared to Jhorn or Mara, she at least had good sense in placing her feet that kept the three of them slipping to their deaths. The Sorceress silently prayed to her Patron that her soul would not be stuck in this place should she parish. If anything she wished to haunt the town that had pushed her out all those years ago and torment the people and their families that had despised her.

Reaching the bottom she quickly untied the rope she shared with the siblings and sat down to massage her injured leg. “I just need a few minutes to stretch this out. Nothing long. I would like to keep going until we find some place else to camp for the night” Beth voiced her opinion. She hoped their destination was too much farther. At least not through another gorge like this one. They might not be as lucky if they had to do another decent like that again.

”I agree,” Mara said as she nodded along with the newcomer before casting one last glance at the trail they’d just come down. ”I’d like to be well out of sight of that before we bed down for the night.”

She looked around at the others, skipping past those that had flown down, and tried to spot any injuries or excessive fatigue. Born with orcish blood, and then going into the city watch, she’d never much had an opportunity to use excuses like ‘I’m tired’ or ‘I don’t feel like it’, but not everyone was used to such rigors. The boy, Ismark, Ireena, perhaps the newcomer, tougher than they looked, but everyone had their limits.

”A pool like this is sure to attract all manner of creature, and we would be better off leaving them to it.”

OOCLuck points gained - 6

'Sure thing, boss,' Polly said. She had plumped down in the mud and removed her boots, rubbing her painful feet, figuring she could get in a quick breather if Mara and Marybeth needed the same. Truth be told, she was happy the two women had spoken up. Physically, she felt quite fit- the descent down the slope had hardly been an issue for the nimble monk, who had spent much of her life in the Giant's Run mountains. Worrying about Jacob and Jhorn, however, had been nerve-wrecking. The Hexblood definitely appreciated having an excuse to quiet her mind a little before continuing,

'So,' she said, getting back up after donning her boots again. 'More wolves, eh? Take good care of Jacob, then. I feel like the smell of wolves makes him nervous. Which is unsurprising, since... You know,' she finished, her expression turning dark when she thought back to the moment where she'd almost lost her mule, almost lost her self-control. 'Let's just keep going. And let's hope Vallaki has something on its menu that's not wolf,' she scowled. The hexblood didn't particularly care about the poor taste of the tough, stringy wolf meat, but she longed for something different. 'I swear I'd give my last goldpiece for a mutton chop right about now,' Polly grumbled.

Deciding complaining wasn't going to get her any closer to a proper meal, the Hexblood took a swig of her hell-brew, stored a flask, and Survival check, please!went to look for tracks. Obviously, they knew there were wolves out there, and she doubted they'd diert from the game trail. But she could at least try and gauge how far ahead they were, if there pace was slowing or picking up, and if they were likely to rest anywhere in the vicinity.
