Group 1 - Ch2 -A Vale of Grey

Year 1165 - Springrise (early spring season) - Day Quarter (Day Two)

Weather: Clear

A Chance MeetingSpirits raised by the clear weather, and a forest floor that now seemed less inclined to swallow the party one boot or hoof at a time, the team hiked northwards. Stahl the human rider, with Hemdan the Goblin sharing the horse's saddle, led the way between tall trees and around occasional dense patches of bushes, with Oniver the peddler, Old Dog the Wolfkin and Phol the half-elven hunter following along with eyes peeled. In brief moments, the fox, which had become something of a party mascot, was seen behind the group too. The small hairy beast would dart between trees, stop to sniff at things, and sometimes spend a few moments scratching at the ground. Then for a while it would be gone from sight, only to pop up again at an unexpected moment.

With the sounds of the river trickling away to the north west, during the end of the first half of the daytime, the explorers began to witness the odd evidence of earlier visitors here. A tree's stump, which had been cleanly cut with an axe or other sharp tool. A rectangular stone, roughly the size of a builder's brick, lying abandoned on the forest floor and covered in several years worth of lichen and moss. And then, a very faint aroma of... woodsmoke? It blew in from the north.

A rustling sound in the forest up ahead.

Were those soft footsteps?

The fox appeared to Stahl's left flank and stopped dead in its tracks, sniffing the air.

Then, off in the distance a little way, the group saw something move. Something short, and hairy? No! It was just someone's hair. A small person in a cape!

It seemed they had stumbled upon a stranger!

A Look AroundFor one particular Halfling this day, there was a lot to think about as one poked around the forests near home. Could it be true that there really was something, or someone awful out here? A being that was determined to take that, which most certainly was not its own? The villagers had spoken of an old Druid to the area's east somewhere, but for whatever reason, the Halfling had kind of ended up wandering south. Nope, no Druid out here yet. It was hard to tell if that was good news, or bad.

Anyway, the short man hadn't set out particularly early for today's exploration and attempt to unravel the mystery. It was just so peaceful out here, that sometimes it just felt right to take your time. He'd walked past the old section of wall near town, past a few of many little patches of ruins, and just kind of... ended up here.

Then, he'd heard what had sounded like hooves plodding upon soft earth, and turned to see the strangest thing he'd seen in a very long while! Strangers! A human man and a little green fellow on a big horse, and beside them, a half-elf, a scary looking old wolfkin, and a human fellow with what looked like plenty of camping gear...

OOCYou still have one more hex of the Day Quarter available, but I'll let you folks play out this meeting first.

Welcome @The Dark Star ! Our unexpected and fun new arrival is on-scene. Feel free to copy him over to the Character Thread.

The pink line on the map is The Dark Star's previous movement today, I've revealed his known section of the map too, just to make things easier. If specific questions come up that you need assistance with regarding the details of the village to the north, let me know and I'll help fill in any blanks.

We can say that the stranger is 25m or so away, so Short range.

The half-elf stopped full in his tracks and could only be described as "gawked" at the stranger. You'd think he'd never seen someone he hadn't know his entire life......and you would be right.

"Well twist my whiskers and call me a cat. Here's one of Hemdan's kin cept I says I've never laid eyes on him before, no, no I've not. Not one from Kiersap at all, says I." It was delivered as a declaration, leaving no room for doubt as to the accuracy of the statement or the conviction of the speaker.

As to what the Halfling may have thought of this strange half-elf glaring at him in neither a friendly expression (he didn't seem the friendly type, no, no he did not) but neither will direct malice or ill-intent, well, one would have to ask the Halfling for it was surely a strange and unexpected experience.

Hemdan
left-aligned image

Hemdan was a little perplexed as he was convinced the Fox was more than it seemed and he didn't want to give up on that idea as he would have to admit to being very wrong and a little foolish. He would also have to admit that his knobbles were possibly smarter than he was. Still, meeting another person out and about was surprising with the mists just lifting so either there were others, this was a fool, a demon or they were close to home.

"Hey" the goblin quietly prompted Stahl " who would be out here alone?"

Hemdan quietly drops off the side of the horse and checks where his companions are. Phol looks, well Phol looks his usual self with a hint of stunned. Oni is catching up and Old Dog is not too far off "Hey Ol'dog" Nice another friendly team name, I must be everyone's favourite goblin now " one of my happy kin. I might talk to them but them being alone seems odd"

The goblin plays with his piece of chalk whilst wondering how this should play out. Excited to see a stranger, someone never seen in Kiersap, but wary. Even though the mists have gone a lifetime of fear of the outside is hard to get over.

Oniver Stramont
right-aligned image

After a brief respite, Stahl led the party north, gradually moving away from the river, but certain they would meet up with it again. Sure enough, after a couple hours, the faint sounds of the flowing water could be heard again off to their left. And that was not all. Small signs of civilization began to show themselves: a cleanly hewn tree stump here, a shaped building stone there. Oniver began to feel giddy, though doubts still rode in his mind. They were still fairly close enough to Kiersap that these signs might not mean that much.

When Phol suddenly stopped, looking poleaxed, before announcing the presence of the stranger, Oniver's stomach leapt into his throat. We must be close then, he thought as he brushed his mustaches smooth and donned his familiar smile. Eagerly moving to the front of the party, the peddler greeted the new-comer. "Hello, hello! Haha, don't be alarmed, fellow traveler, we mean no harm. Indeed, we seek and offer aid, whichever one best suits you." Oniver extended his hand in a universal symbol of friendship and goodwill, hoping the halfling would take it. "Tell us, little master, you don't by any chance hail from a city, do you? We have ventured north these last two days in search of one, and would greatly appreciate any information you can provide. I am a merchant, of sorts, and I'm sure I can find something to repay your kindness." As Oniver spoke, that insufferable grin never left his face, and his eyes darted up and down, cataloging and committing to memory everything the halfling wore.

After the tense journey around the bog, the rest of the day's travel appears to be fairly rote. The scenery is little different from that surrounding Kiersap, but the air is different - Stahl, and perhaps no one in this group save that pestering fox, has been here before. They may be the first kin to set foot here for ten generations!

And then they see the signs of civilisation. Woodcutters, trappers, hunters - they've all come to these ground recently. The so-called 'city' is not only real, but it seems to still exist. "So you haven't steered us wrong after all," he concedes to Hemdan along the way.

The fox trots alongside Bladddanser for a moment, then halts. Stahl doesn't miss the change in temperament - something unfamiliar is close. He casually reaches for his bow - it's not easy firing an arrow from horseback, but Stahl's actually a decent shot from the saddle. With any luck he can strike a beast or marauder before it can get close ...

But what's this?

"How should I know why he's here?" Stahl hisses to Hemdan, as they both regard the halfling now in their midst. "You sure he isn't one of yours, with fairer skin?"

Oniver played his silver tongue like a well-strung lute, but Stahl doesn't lose his scowl, and keeps his hand near the bow. Just because this one is here, doesn't mean he's alone.

OOCDouble success on LEAD THE WAY for the afternoon quarter. Stahl won't directly address the halfling yet, but he's going to look fairly threatening atop his horse with his hands twitching to ready his bow.

Orin, looking very frightened to be alone in these woods jumps back as he can hear voices now speaking to him.

"Ah! Please don't eat me or kidnap me! I'm not even worthy of being called a snack! And if you knew my kind, you would know that I am not a child, I'm very much in my teens, if you were thinking in human terms!" He cries out as he raises his hands in fear covering his face, awaiting to be struck, or grabbed, but when that moment had passed and nothing had happened, he eased up, placed down his hands and revealed his young face. Wearing a brown cape wrapped around his body with a pin holding it together on his left shoulder, his boots are long an pointed at the ends, his facial features are childlike and he has short cut black hair, on his back, is a lute, with a strap, holding it over his shoulder. He listens to how they speak to him, and it doesn't seem like they are hostile.

"Oh by the gods, you're not orcs! Or the kidnapper! Or are you? No, you would have taken me already, right? I think that's how it was happening. Hey, you wouldn't happen to know a druid that lives around these parts eh? Probably dirty looking, covered in moss, brush, leaves, animal droppings, you know, what I assume a druid would normally look like?" He starts to ask them questions, walking closer to them.

"Did I mention there are orcs around here? If I could just, ya know, be near you guys in case they might be following little ol' me. They might be less likely to, you know eat me!" He says as he gives them the big old puppy eyes.

Oniver Stramont

When the stranger finished speaking, Oniver stood with his hand extended for a short while before pulling it back. "Well, I guess that custom has become lost to these people," he muttered quickly to himself. Resuming his previous tone and volume (which some might consider a tad boisterous), "Ho ho, little master! We are not orcs, nor do we freely associate with their filthy kind. As I said, we are travelers seeking a city—a large settlement with many people—which is rumoured to be somewhere to the north of here. Considering how I asked first, it would only be polite for you to answer before we discuss this druid friend of yours." White teeth flashed under a thick broom of a mustache as the peddler spoke, his voice all polite and reasonable-sounding. "Perhaps introductions are in order, eh, little master?" The peddler placed a hand to his breast and gave a short bow. "Oniver. Oniver Stramont, of Kiersap." His brown eyes glittered expectantly in the afternoon sun, penetrating those of the young halfling, practically demanding a response.

Something stinks. And perhaps it's not Hemdan after all. This youth yammers about danger and cowers in fear in front of cordial kin ... why be out here at all?

Stahl commits to being less hospitable than Oniver when addressing their stranger. "You say there are murderous orcs and kidnappers in these parts, and you set out from the safety of your town with little more than a lute and a cape? Why do you travel alone, in search of someone you've clearly never seen before?"

The mention of a 'kidnapper' is curious. And the mention of a druid makes him wary as well. He glances side to side, wondering if a wood mystic or insidious bandit is watching them right now.

... And should they keep a closer eye on that damned fox?

Phol purses his lips in thought after absorbing the halfling's rambling, turning to look to Hemdan and raised an eyebrow. If the fox were still within sight he might even nod his chin in its direction and shrug.

Once Stahl's questions began, however, his mood darkened once more, "Oy! Are we to stand here dawdling now? If half what this one says is true then it's not safe about. And even if none of it's true, fact remains we're near to a community that's not the pit we left behind. Let's get on with it! The fellow can talk as he walks, yes?"

It was a shame some of the representatives of Kiersap were of such poor disposition, Phol would likely do little to improve the reputation of the town. And here they were, on the cusp of such a historic moment, two lost towns meeting again.

To Orin he added, "You've got inns in your town, have ya? We can yap over a pint, says I."

Year 1165 - Springrise (early spring season) - Day Quarter (Day Two)

Weather: Clear

A Chance MeetingThe explorers were right of course, to question why a small man might travel alone. The truth was though, and perhaps soon to be shared, that the halfling hailed from a place not so very far from here! Perhaps Phol's dream of a tavern or inn might soon become a reality!

Upon hearing the name "Kiersap", Orin recalled that in a few local songs there were references to a village that once lay southwest of a great and sprawling city. It had once been something of a border town, a place of abundant natural resources and a defensible location, that strangely enough was a site of much turmoil in the pre-Mist ages. If anywhere had survived the Blood Most, Kiersap seemed like an obvious place, for travelers to now be exiting in an attempt to explore and become reunited with the outside world. Was it possible that in the past, some of battles on Kiersap's soils, had been caused by the northern city's leadership, seeking to expand their Queen's influence and territory? Hard to know for sure, but it seemed rather likely. Anyway, this was all so long ago that most had probably forgotten. Times had changed for the worse, until finally turning to the better with the Mist's retreat. Better? Well, perhaps the jury was still out on that one... At least thus far, any Orcs who might inhabit any nearby lands, had made themselves scare.

OOCYou still have one more hex of the Day Quarter available. When you're ready to move into another hex let me know.

Feel free to keep RPing the meeting until you're happy to move on! Love your work folks

Orin, got close enough to the group that he could now interact with them further and that was when he noticed the hand that was reached out, suddenly remembering his manners he pulled his hand high up to meet Oniver's... But, it was too late! His hand had already pulled away and he had continued on with the conversation, Orin looked at his hand, now just shaking the winds hand at this point and awkwardly put his own hand away.

"Oops, sorry, that's my mistake, didn't mean to seem rude, the name is Orin Silver! Pleasure to meet you Oniver Stramont, of Kiersap. I forgot to even mention that you are really close to Greyvale, just north of here! It's where I came from, and the reason that I left was because there has been an alarming amount of children going missing, just vanishing into thin air, some of us really cared about this happening, so we tried to gather any information we could. Which lead me out here, there were more of us at first, but when the fog got real thick, they started to head back, I thought I had heard something, which might have been you all and made the choice to, if anything see something and book it back to civilization. But then found myself a little lost haha." He explained to everyone.

"So if you want to head to somewhere a little safer, then let's go already! Of course we have inns and taverns that will welcome you all in with open arms, especially with me around!"

Greyvale. It's so strange to have the name of another town, another civilisation. Kiersap was always just 'home', bit now it's just another town with a name that actually has to be used as an identifier again. A marker to be compared against other markers.

And as for this 'Orin' ... hmm. So he got separated from a larger group. It's a little suspicious that he both 'found himself lost' and yet is in an immediate position to lead them to Greyvale. And if they did find trouble such as orcs, what was this walking dumpling with a lute going to do against an orc? But Stahl rubs his brow. It could just be that chasing the sound of their own group helped Orin get his bearings after a moment of panic. And not everyone is as well versed in travelling through the woods as himself, Phol or even Old Dog. But still, this is an unfamiliar situation, and Stahl might be emotionally distant from some inhabitants of Kiersap, but he's never known a 'stranger' before. Everyone in Kiersap is 'familiar'. He may need some time to acclimatise himself to dealing with others.

"Vanishing in thin air?" he finally repeats. "Can't say we've had that problem back ho ... in Kiersap." He's still not keen to trust the halfling, but Oniver is playing the friendly card and Phol is anxious to find a tavern, so Stahl can't well and truly make much opposition without having substance to his suspicions. "From what you say, it doesn't seem your home is much safer than being here. But we will keep a close eye on things while we head to Greyvale." Including you, little stranger, he adds to himself.

OOCStahl still has his stranger danger alarm ringing but he's talked himself into going along with it for now.

Hemdan walks a little closer and closer until he thinks he's in range for is knobbles to Passive sense magicwarm him.

"Greetings day kin, excuse the suspicions but those are not easy to lay down in these times. And so much going on. A druid - whereabouts unknown. Missing children. A Kidnapper. A new town. A group hunting children and in all of that a lost and lone kin scared yet brave enough to present themselves as you are now."

Hemdan edges a little closer sniffing No idea what Orcs smell like but I bet its bad and takes a look at the trail this day kin has left, seeing if its possible to tell if the trail meanders like a lost person or not.

"How far to Greyvale and who lives there. Must be a... brave bunch, especially if Orcs roam near"

OOC
Do I need to make any rolls for sniffing and checking Orin's trail?
Did sense magic trigger?

Oniver Stramont

Oniver accepted the halfling's apology with a wide smile and a nod, but frowned at the mention of missing children. Stahl was not shy in voicing his suspicions, and the peddler had to admit the halfling's story had given him reservations as well. With the Blood Mist gone, it seemed all new kinds of dangers had sprung up to take it's place. Or, perhaps, old dangers reawakened. Still, seeing a new town, or village, or... "Is Greyvale a city?" Oniver asked suddenly, realizing Orin hadn't provided a direct answer. The merchant then gave a start as Hemdan crept up beside him. "Ye gads!"

Oniver listened to the goblin's speech, giving the little guy room to do... whatever he was doing, before facing the young halfling once again. His bright smile beamed across his face. "Certainly, we'd love to accompany you to your home. It sounds like a lovely, welcoming place." Sweetness dripped from his words like venom from a viper's fang. "But didn't you say you were searching for a druid? Perhaps we should locate him first, eh? Any ideas where he might be hiding?"

Phol pursed his lips in thought as the group resumed their walk North, for he had begun to consider some of Orin's words and their possible implications.

"Has your Greyvale had other visitors such as we? Now that the Blood Mist rises no more," He called to Orin, "I've not trudged through muck and chill in search of others only to be accused of stealing their children when I did arrive. No, no I did not!"

The little fellow did seem sure of himself, and none of their group could be mistaken for an Orc. He was probably worried about nothing.
