![]() Convinced that Iddlepot’s claims were for the most part true and deciding that the halfing was likely as close to an innocent as a town like Straya could claim Ravgor turned his attention to the matter at hand. Porus was one he didn’t have a feel for yet, but the man was obviously connected and could likely get things done that needed doing. The dwarf’s plan was not far enough along that he knew where he’d end up or if he would ever need a contact in Straya again but having the white-haired human look favorably on those that handled a job for him could be worth even more than the silver being offered. Always better to have what you may need than need what you don’t have. As for his companions on this venture, Ravgor was beginning to think the pair could be the right choice to leave with him when the time came. He’d have to think of how best to approach that topic. Maybe their time together on this task would give him some ideas. Greyland’s direct questions gave credence to his notion that the minstrel was not as bright and cheerful as he could play when in front of a crowd. Maybe some sterner metal to that man than most of his trade. Aelys on the other hand surprised him by how chatty she was being. A few times he thought she might skirt the line of revealing more than she needed to. For someone who made her living taking and lurking that could be a bad habit to have. She was cocky though, sure of herself. From the bits he knew of her the sorcerer expected that particular foundation rested on soft sands. All in all, he was looking forward to their short jaunt together. A chance to test their mettle a bit more and see if they were the ones he would take into the Forbidden Lands. "Aye, you can count me in. Be sure the pair of you listen to my words on the Path though. Been up the slopes of these mountains. Not every rock is a safe spot to set your boot. He'd have more luck getting time at a forge with one of the smithys hammering out nails and hinges than those pounding metal into blades. There was one smith he had in mind, a small shop out by the Graveyard. Never too busy and the man at the anvil was an older human with the tired expression of someone plodding through his days.
It would be easier to get this one to set his hammer down. "Fine work," he said, picking up a rough shod nail and admiring it as if it were a master blade crafted by Brodken of Stonehold himself. Looking around at the barrels full of the nails he baited the hook. "Ya been working hard, for sure. Man needs a rest once in a bit. I spend some time at the forge m'self. Glad to keep yer fire hot. Let ya grab some stew. Better yet an ale, or two!" Apparently, good grammar and erudite sentence structures were not something expected from his people. So when dealing with situations such as this he spoke in what he thought of as his "mountain words". No sense putting peoples guard up by unsettling them. Overall the smithy was adequate for his needs this day. It felt good to work the steel, heating it and shaping it into the head of an axe. This one would be for splitting limbs not timber so he gave it a deeper face and sharper edge. The hours passed and he became lost in his work as he often did. Before long though he was putting his mark on the back of the axehead. A simple mountain outline with the rune for "one" that he had come up with after his exile. A dwarf alone yet strong as the mountains that birthed him. Fitting the axehead onto hardwood handle he had carved gave him the satisfaction of a job well done. Probably the best work this shop had seen in years was his guess. He still had some time before he was to meet Aelys and Grey. Picking up a small piece of slag that had rounded itself in the quench he began to etch the rune for one of his spells. Having it made instead of tracing it out as he recanted the spell would be a time saver if they were in a pinch. As he worked he chuckled at Aelys' show of being in control of the purse strings. Her love of coin was clear but loyalty purchased was only as strong as the coffers it was paid from. No, better to let her be in charge of those coffers and worry if our loyalty is a commodity she could lose. Last edited by Palliven; Jan 27th, 2023 at 07:53 AM. |

![]() Greasy tallow smoke hanging in the air mixed with the pungent smell of sweat from the heat of the day didn’t make the mushroom ale taste any better. The good news was it didn’t make it any worse either. While he had to work to stomach the swill they dared to call ale in Straya, he actually enjoyed the stew. The way they steeped and ground the Coorowcoji gave it a rich, nutty flavor that reminded him of the hazelnut paste he used to mix with his oats when growing up. Judging by the way Aelys pushed her spoon around and Grey looked at his bowl more than he ate from it, Ravgor would say they didn’t find it as appealing as he did. “Best eat while you can. The Path won't be as bad as making our way without a trail but it’s still no easy hike. Maybe you can cook, I can’t, so all we’ll likely have is hard tack and biscuits.” He had assumed they had made their way to Straya but that didn’t mean either of them had any experience hauling gear up a mountain. It wasn’t just the rough ground. The incline strained legs used to walking flat. The air was thinner, exhausting those not ready for it. He’d have to pace them the first day or so, make sure they could adjust and not become a problem. He had been thinking of the note that Porus had shown them with it’s talk of ‘yet more’ dwarven ruins out West. If this halfling knew where some where he’d be very interested to get that information from him. Best to let that lie for now though, no sense in showing his interest yet. Not while he had the chance to learn more of them. “Sorry to say I haven’t caught one of your songs yet, but folks say you are good. Are you?” He took a spoonful of the thick, brown stew waiting to see just how the dark-skinned human would handle the question. Last edited by Palliven; Jan 28th, 2023 at 04:37 PM. |
