Can we roll for a couple of things or just one thing at a time?

Iddlepot, Piddlot and Porus. That could be a song...

Ever since Aelys came out of the shadows, Greyland had had a hand on the hilt of his knife. He wasn’t the best knife fighter, but he’d be damned if anyone caught him slipping. He finally released it…

He’d of course seen the brothers around and at his performances. There probably wasn't a person in Straya that Greyland didn’t at least know a little; between the shows, the drink, and the boredom. He liked them and was glad to help. At least for a price.

He was about to negotiate more funds when Aelys spoke and jumped in. Not to undermine her, he changed his track and slipped a question in after her negotiations were complete, to see if he could help get to the 2 successes after a Pushtruth. He trusted her to get more for the work, so that was no problem, and instead tried to Got a Successremember what he could about the Path of Bone and what lay in that direction…

"What are you getting out of this Porus? And why Aelys?"

I rolled for 2 things there, so if that’s too much, I’ll just take the results of the Lore roll.

The Costs of BusinessRavgor was a somewhat intimidating presence, that was for sure. Not only hard of exterior and stern of expression, he also liked to hike around on mountains, just for fun! He wasn't just good at looking at rocky slopes though, he was also pretty good at judging character. This Halfling, he was an easy read, the poor little man's expression one of equal measures anxiety and hope, under the glare of a tough dwarven eye.

left-aligned image
Iddlepot smiled to Ravgor, and although the reaction was born of nerves, there was an honesty and gratefulness to it. There was loss in the little man's eyes too, like a layer of darkness trying to smother their usual Halfling's sense of joy, neverending hunger, and hopeless optimism. It seemed to Ravgor that though Iddlepot might be far from "perfect" or "clean" as far as sins and bad behavior go, the Halfling's plight was true. All indications were that what had been stated, was truth, and very little if anything might be being intentionally concealed.

While Ravgor did a personality assessment, Aelys was straight to the pointy end, the details of the transaction and the promises of reward. It was a fine effort, and bartering and long-winded adjustments to pricing were kind of the Strayan way. No costs were solid. Everything depended on a mixture of luck, who you were dealing with, and even the very time of day.

left-aligned image
The old man chuckled openly, before a sly smile came across his face.

“Forty? Haha! Would you really strip poor Iddlepot bare of all he owns, just so he can be reunited with his brother, only to have to subsist with nothing at all? Aelys... you ask too much, but perhaps there is a different way to skin this. Whatever you might find along the way, in terms of valuables or whatnot, that will be yours alone. Those funding the expedition seek only Piddlelot, and will take no cut of whatever you might unearth along the way. Sound, good?”

Greyland meanwhile, wasn't focused on the source of this work, or even the potential costs and rewards. No. His mind was already scouring pockets of old songs, memories of the words of passers by, and other thoughts, for anything relevant to the Path of Bone. Separating gossip, tales and the output of Straya's rumor mill, from what sounded logical and a likely truth, wasn't easy. The minstrel was a master of such things though. Elaboration. Embellishment. Fancification. Thus, he was also fit to strip away falsities and perceive of truth. There was one old tune that struck a chord with him all of a sudden. A ditty number that he hadn't heard since childhood.

Not Too Far
Your home in a garden, would you not look around?
Or would you just pound those stumps, right there, straight in the ground!
A glory oh treasures, so easy to mine!
Why head elsewhere, and simply lose time?
The ambitious are different, a separate nest.
Away from the seduced, they make fortunes in the West.
Some died on the way, their bones line the track.
Walk too far there, and you'll fall down a crack.

Aelys wondered if she would've had an easier time convincing the halfling to part with his coin if Porus wasn't around. Perhaps she should have let the minstrel try to convince them. It was worth it for her to give it a try herself, but she couldn't help but feel as if she lost face in front of her companions.

She scoffed at Greyland's questions and answered rather bluntly. "The old man gets a cut without having to put himself in any danger. Not that I'm complaining. It's not as if we would've run into Iddlepot with his problems on our own. As far as why me?" The rogue shoved a thumb towards her chest as she continued with confidence. "I'm dependable and I'm a growing talent! The codger recognizes that if he invests in me early, he can reap the benefits of having been been one of my first business partners."

The half-elf dipped her head in a firm nod. "I believe your terms are acceptable. Are you two in?" She cast her glance between the two, hoping that she could count on their company. If either of them turned Iddlepot and Porus' proposal down, she would have to resort to finding less less trustworthy companions. There was always that brute with one-eye, Grak. He could certainly deal with any trouble they might encounter, but he often became the trouble himself.

Convinced that Iddlepot’s claims were for the most part true and deciding that the halfing was likely as close to an innocent as a town like Straya could claim Ravgor turned his attention to the matter at hand.

Porus was one he didn’t have a feel for yet, but the man was obviously connected and could likely get things done that needed doing. The dwarf’s plan was not far enough along that he knew where he’d end up or if he would ever need a contact in Straya again but having the white-haired human look favorably on those that handled a job for him could be worth even more than the silver being offered.

Always better to have what you may need than need what you don’t have.

As for his companions on this venture, Ravgor was beginning to think the pair could be the right choice to leave with him when the time came. He’d have to think of how best to approach that topic. Maybe their time together on this task would give him some ideas.

Greyland’s direct questions gave credence to his notion that the minstrel was not as bright and cheerful as he could play when in front of a crowd. Maybe some sterner metal to that man than most of his trade. Aelys on the other hand surprised him by how chatty she was being. A few times he thought she might skirt the line of revealing more than she needed to. For someone who made her living taking and lurking that could be a bad habit to have. She was cocky though, sure of herself. From the bits he knew of her the sorcerer expected that particular foundation rested on soft sands. All in all, he was looking forward to their short jaunt together. A chance to test their mettle a bit more and see if they were the ones he would take into the Forbidden Lands.

"Aye, you can count me in. Be sure the pair of you listen to my words on the Path though. Been up the slopes of these mountains. Not every rock is a safe spot to set your boot. "

"I’m in. Seems like straightforward work…" Then a look comes over Greyland’s face and he turns on a smile "And it may make for a good song or two. "

The explanation from Aelys was good, but Greyland wanted to hear it straight from the horse's mouth. No one has anyone really bad to say about Porus, but nothing great either. No real reason to trust or distrust him other than Aelys vouching for him.

"Alright Ravgor, I’ll just put my feet where you do. "

“OCC”
Grey isn’t going to share that song with the group yet. Maybe when they’re on the road?

The Deal is Made

With everyone in agreement that the task would go ahead, both Porus and Iddlepot smiled with appreciation. Their reasons for the optimism might have been different, but both were seemingly very pleased that these three individuals were up for a trek.

"Thank you, thank you all! Oh I so hope you find him and everything is alright."

He then took out a coin purse, probably with the ten silver's deposit in it, and looked around nervously wondering who to give it to, the sound of the monies within gently tinkling.

left-aligned image
Porus nodded to the group then, respectfully.

“You all have my thanks too. I really hope your journey goes well.”
OOCThank you everyone! What would you like to do next? If you'd like to purchase some supplies, we can either RP it out or you tell me what you want and I'll give you the prices hehe.

Each day is split into quarters, and it is still morning quarter. If you wanted to "shop" now, you could potentially head off during the day quarter. If you wanted to wait until evening to do the shopping (in the hopes of a better price), then you could probably head out tomorrow morning. Up to you :-)

OOC - Ravgor's Plan For His Share
Want to run this by you GM, make sure it makes sense and isn't overdoing it.

1. He wants to try Crafting to make a Hand Axe. Assuming he can access a forge in town somewhere. Takes a quarter day. What would the cost to craft be? Would be willing to craft weapons for others (if they pay the cost) but not sure we have the extra time.
2. Would like to carve a rune for his Horrify spell. Takes a quarter day. Assuming I can do this on a stone or piece of bark and for no cost.
3. Shop for a few basics he needs. Field Rations and a Flute.

Also, would love to get some WP before we head out so if there's a way to tie in some push opportunities that would be cool

Aelys held out her hand with a grin towards the halfling as he produced the coin purse. This was her find, and she wanted to set a precedent that she would be in charge of matters when it came to silver. After accepting the initial payment, she turned to face the others while counting out each silver piece to divvy up amongst them. "Three silver pieces each for now. I'm going to use the extra to cover half the cost for a tent for us. Sound fair to you two?" She wanted to seem generous by paying for a tent out of her own pocket, but the half-elf mostly considered that if they decided to part ways afterwards, she would have a better chance at keeping the tent if she paid for part of it.

The young woman already had a shopping list in mind. Unfortunately she was just shy of being able to afford things she could really use like some armor or a bear trap. "Would any of you like to accompany me to purchase some travel supplies this evening, or should we simply meet somewhere tomorrow morning?"

OOC
The first morning quarter I think I'll try my luck with picking some pockets for extra coin and a potential for more WP. Running into trouble could also provide some fun opportunities as well. She's going to use at least one quarter for shopping and another for enjoying herself at the tavern.

I'm planning on buying a Small Tent (2 silver, fits two people) since I assume two people will be sleeping at a time while the other keeps watch. As far as personal items go, a blanket (7 copper), metal plate (8 copper), food knife (6 copper), and field rations (1 silver). At the inn she'll buy a meal (Bowl of Stew, 3 copper), Flagon of Ale (Covers the daily need for water for 2 copper), and Lodging at an Inn, Dormitory (2 copper) - Bringing the total to 4 silver and 8 copper and almost making Aelys completely broke assuming that picking pockets doesn't go well. I'm totally up for roleplaying the shopping and everything, but I wanted to tally everything up and make it available for everyone to see in case they had something to add. Like I could totally skip out on the field rations, blanket, metal plate, or food knife if I want to be stingy and a little more risky.

He'd have more luck getting time at a forge with one of the smithys hammering out nails and hinges than those pounding metal into blades. There was one smith he had in mind, a small shop out by the Graveyard. Never too busy and the man at the anvil was an older human with the tired expression of someone plodding through his days.

It would be easier to get this one to set his hammer down.

"Fine work," he said, picking up a rough shod nail and admiring it as if it were a master blade crafted by Brodken of Stonehold himself. Looking around at the barrels full of the nails he baited the hook. "Ya been working hard, for sure. Man needs a rest once in a bit. I spend some time at the forge m'self. Glad to keep yer fire hot. Let ya grab some stew. Better yet an ale, or two!"

Apparently, good grammar and erudite sentence structures were not something expected from his people. So when dealing with situations such as this he spoke in what he thought of as his "mountain words". No sense putting peoples guard up by unsettling them.

Overall the smithy was adequate for his needs this day. It felt good to work the steel, heating it and shaping it into the head of an axe. This one would be for splitting limbs not timber so he gave it a deeper face and sharper edge. The hours passed and he became lost in his work as he often did. Before long though he was putting his mark on the back of the axehead. A simple mountain outline with the rune for "one" that he had come up with after his exile. A dwarf alone yet strong as the mountains that birthed him. Fitting the axehead onto hardwood handle he had carved gave him the satisfaction of a job well done. Probably the best work this shop had seen in years was his guess.

He still had some time before he was to meet Aelys and Grey. Picking up a small piece of slag that had rounded itself in the quench he began to etch the rune for one of his spells. Having it made instead of tracing it out as he recanted the spell would be a time saver if they were in a pinch.

As he worked he chuckled at Aelys' show of being in control of the purse strings. Her love of coin was clear but loyalty purchased was only as strong as the coffers it was paid from. No, better to let her be in charge of those coffers and worry if our loyalty is a commodity she could lose.

OocRavgor will just finish working then meet up with others as agreed.

Greyland taps his foot thinking for a second… He makes sure their employers are out of earshot before saying "So, it sounds like we’re going to head out in the morning, and not today, eh? Ok. But if this is really a rescue mission, then a lost day is a lot of time to lose. I’ll go with the group though. And I’ll come with you this evening, Aelys. When were you thinking about going to the market?"

After the group separates before coming together to shop, Greyland goes to a busy street corner and starts busking for coin. There isn’t much more for him to do, so during the day and between songs, he asks around to see if anyone knows anything about the Path of Bones. Additional legends, any creatures seen out there, dangerous parts of the path with hazards, anything that may give him some foreknowledge of what’s to come.

When the appointed time comes, he’s already in the market, because he’s been playing his instrument. He stores it, quickly and casually when he sees Aelys and Ravgor, and keeps his eyes out for the items of interest.

“OCC”
He’ll spend the day quarter trying to ask around a little about the Path of Bone and see if anyone has been on it and knows anything about what’s out there. I’d also like to see if I can perform for a little cash, but if that, investigating rumors and negotiation rolls are too much, i under that too.

The evening he’ll spend with Aelys in the market. Just for the team: Grey will buy 2 Food Rations, a sack, Oil lamp, Lamp oil.And he’ll hope to get a little bit of a better price in the evening.

I don’t really feel the need to RP the shopping trip, so I’d vote on skipping that part and maybe the group gets a dinner or something that night, and we RP that a little.

Coin Liberation

The Market Square was the obvious choice at this time of day for Aelys to make use of her more unscrupulous talents. She could try to lift some goods from a stall, but in her experience, merchants were ready for just that sort of thing. They had to be to make a living selling goods in Straya. She could watch for someone handling silver to follow, but the risk would be even higher. The less time she spent lingering near her target, the better. The thief knew how to make herself seem unassuming with a change to her posture and a shift in her clothing, and she believed she could make it less likely that her victim would remember her if they tried.

The half-elf kept her dagger hidden in her ratty cloak as she approached her target. The human man was unremarkable. He didn't seem as if he had a lot of coin to spend, but he also obviously had a purpose in the market. She spotted his coin purse easily enough as she approached, ready to cut it loose and slip it into her palm. She seemingly simply shouldered past the man, but her dagger found its mark as she felt the weight of the coin purse fall into her open hand and she quickly stowed it away. Just as she tugged her hood up and started to make her retreat, she glanced over her shoulder in time to barely dodge out of the way of the man's large hand reaching for her.

The nerve of this man! Normally people shout out, "Thief!" and give me more time to react!

Aelys' worn out boots beat a rapid pace as she looked for an escape route. Thankfully her small frame let her slip through the crowd easier than her pursuer could, though she briefly got pinned between two rotund orcs. She thought they might actually crush her! Thankfully, the rogue managed to make use of their bulky bodies to aid in her escape as the human would have an even more difficult time pushing past them. Unfortunately, it seemed as if everything that could go wrong during her escape would go wrong. The young woman managed to twist her ankle as she fled, and she cursed underneath her breath as she pushed through the pain.

The thief slipped into a narrow alley and came across a set of conveniently stacked crates. She climbed over them, only for one of the wooden crates to shatter underneath her foot and send her tumbling down in a pile of debris. Aelys groaned loudly as she was certain she was in for a beating at the very least. She glanced behind her, only to realize that she wasn't being followed anymore. She must have lost him back at the orcs, or even sometime before that.

The half-elf pushed up to her feet with a wince as she attempted to regain her composure. This better have been worth it. She finally took the time to count the coin she managed to pilfer as she limped back towards her favorite tavern, hoping to catch Greyland to have him take care of her shopping for her.

OOC
Making some assumptions about how everything would work out, but I had the chase in mind and thought it would be too fun to not post. I'll include my actual shopping list when I see how much I managed to make, though it probably won't be too different.

I also mentioned the unassuming thing because she has the Path of the Face, but mechanically I didn't want to do anything like pretend to be someone else just in case I got caught.

Greasy tallow smoke hanging in the air mixed with the pungent smell of sweat from the heat of the day didn’t make the mushroom ale taste any better. The good news was it didn’t make it any worse either. While he had to work to stomach the swill they dared to call ale in Straya, he actually enjoyed the stew. The way they steeped and ground the Coorowcoji gave it a rich, nutty flavor that reminded him of the hazelnut paste he used to mix with his oats when growing up. Judging by the way Aelys pushed her spoon around and Grey looked at his bowl more than he ate from it, Ravgor would say they didn’t find it as appealing as he did.

“Best eat while you can. The Path won't be as bad as making our way without a trail but it’s still no easy hike. Maybe you can cook, I can’t, so all we’ll likely have is hard tack and biscuits.”

He had assumed they had made their way to Straya but that didn’t mean either of them had any experience hauling gear up a mountain. It wasn’t just the rough ground. The incline strained legs used to walking flat. The air was thinner, exhausting those not ready for it. He’d have to pace them the first day or so, make sure they could adjust and not become a problem. He had been thinking of the note that Porus had shown them with it’s talk of ‘yet more’ dwarven ruins out West. If this halfling knew where some where he’d be very interested to get that information from him. Best to let that lie for now though, no sense in showing his interest yet. Not while he had the chance to learn more of them.

“Sorry to say I haven’t caught one of your songs yet, but folks say you are good. Are you?”

He took a spoonful of the thick, brown stew waiting to see just how the dark-skinned human would handle the question.

Morning
Greyland find the market corner he prefers… Good foot traffic, near a fountain to rest a little bit, great acoustics. There’s a man there playing a flute and doing an adequate job of it.

As Grey approaches, the man gives Greyland a threatening eye and plays a darker tune. Greyland matches the man’s gaze and increases the intensity. Using no words, the man quickly learns that Greyland is willing to die or kill for this spot at this moment…

30 minutes later, the 2 are still playing Got one 6.Together.

Day
Greyland puts his lute away and asks the man who he’s been playing with a little about the Path of Bones. After some back and forth, Greyland learns a little from him. As the man is soon to walk off, annoyed with Greyland for many reasons, a woman walks by, overhearing their discussion. She seems interested in what they have to say, but shy.

Greyland hits her with a winning grin, a sharp smile and a few questions. At the end of the day, as the evening falls, Grey has gotten Pushed in order to get some WP. 3 6’s total. 1 one.a few answers

Evening
Greyland see’s Aelys limping along. He can tell, even though she’s limping, he only saw her because that’s what she wanted. After a terse interaction, she gives Greyland some silver and a list of what she wants. A stern look from her lets him know to do his due diligence when getting that stuff for her.

In addition to what he gets for her, he gets 2 Food Rations (2S), a sack (8c), Oil lamp(5c), Lamp oil (2c). Right before leaving the market, he finds a Studded Leather Cap that he thinks looks good, so he gets that.

Night
Night falls and Greyland goes to the agreed upon time and agreed upon place to meet up. Sitting down he gives the dwarf a hearty handshake. Already the thrill of adventure is filling Greyland.

They eat, Greyland picking at his stew, making small talk. Then Ravgor asks an interesting question: Is he any good?

"You know? That’s a great question… I would say and maybe Aelys will back me up, that I’m the best in town. For many reasons. " Grey looks around to see the entertainment tonight. He’s not really supposed to play here tonight. Not with the competition. It’s frowned upon. But if the audience wants it… "I think I’m better than this guy at least. I know a few songs and can play some good notes with good fingers. And I’ll play for you if you want." He leans back in his chair and opens his hands to indicate the world "But am I good? Am I good? Am I good? In the whole world, so do I stack up? I can’t know yet. That’s a big reason I want to get out there."

He voice gets a bit smaller "So I can see…". His spoon with the stew meanders to his face, then his mug. And when the mug hits the table, he’s like a new person. "I don’t know much about you though, man. I know we’re pals, or whatever, but you seem to keep everything close to the vest. Tell me a bit more about you?"

An Evening's Soup

It had been a busy day indeed! The working of metal into useful things, the collection of a little extra coin from unsuspecting or sonically-seduced passers by, the haggling and negotiation for equipment that the group hoped would ease their morrow's journey.

All was well this night, as the trio enjoyed some well-deserved sustenance and made their final plans...
OOCGreat work everyone! Feel free to RP for as long as you need, and please let me know if I've forgotten to confirm or do anything related to your day's antics. Once you feel ready, I'll zip us ahead to leaving Straya-town the next morning!

Some things to consider:
When journeying (moving on the hex map), someone needs to LEAD THE WAY. When the time comes, this will be a Survival roll. The others can simply HIKE (no roll needed), or someone can also KEEP WATCH (Scouting roll). The person KEEPING WATCH can also have "HELP" from another, who gives them an extra dice to roll.

Evening Soup

If the half-elf was excited about their upcoming journey, she certainly wasn't showing it as she nursed her ale and picked at her bowl of soup. She was worn out from her nearly failed attempt at a simple snatch and run, and she kept going over just how poorly she managed to escape over and over again in her head. She would have to do better than that on their journey if she wanted to prove herself as a reliable companion to the two at her table.

The rogue couldn't help herself after being asked about her opinion on Greyland's talents as a bard. She smirked after taking a quick swig from her tankard. "Aye, I'd say he's the best here. He might have some competition from me if I get drunk enough." She licked her lips before continuing. "Don't you Dwarves have some good drinking songs? Maybe you could teach us a tune or two." From what little she's interacted with Ravgor, he seemed a bit off from the stereotype of his kind that she had in her head.

OOC Shopping List
A Studded Leather Helmet (3 silver, for some reason I was thinking the leather armor was the helmet), a blanket (7 copper), and a metal plate (8 copper), leaving Aelys with 5 copper. The bowl of stew for each person will take 9 copper out of the 1 extra silver we had, so Aelys will spend 1 of her own copper and use that leftover copper to buy herself a Flagon of Ale so her daily need of Food and Water is met. So now I have 4 copper.
