A Forgotten Realms Classic.. The Tinker Gnome. Only slightly less dangerous then a Dragonlance Kender who's bored

Name:Grahim Bafflemain
Class: Wizard (Clockworker)
Race: Gnome

Background: Coming from a long line of tinkerers specializing in timepieces and clockwork, Grahim was groomed from birth to take over the position of Head Horologists like his father before him and his father before him and etc., etc... A tradition with years of steadfast progression. The problem was that as talented as Grahim was with cogs and gears he found the process of building clocks and other timepieces tedious and uninspiring. Instead Grahim found himself increasingly attracted to the stories of his uncle, a black sheep within the family, who had gone off to seek fortune and fame as an adventurer. Grahim became enamored in the tales of dragons and monsters his uncle would spin; likely embellished for dramatic effect but Grahim didn't care. He was hooked.

Initially it started with Grahim skipping his studies to go listen to his uncle but soon the young gnome was trying to recreate the creatures from his favorite stories in miniature form using gears and springs. Grahim's parents did not appreciate this, to say the least, but even as they attempted to distance their son from the 'bad' influence of his uncle, a spark of wanderlust had arisen in the young artisan which he fanned in secret.

By the time Grahim was ready to take his first steps into a proper apprenticeship away from his parents to broaden his abilities Grahim had orchestrated a plan to finally get a true taste of adventure. With the help of a few of his uncles friends Grahim was able to forge a letter from a notable craftsman far from the eyes of his parents. Convincing them that a little travel would help to curb his adventurous streak Grahim was given permission to travel to his new 'apprenticeship'. In truth Grahim would take this opportunity to truly adventure like his uncle; slaying beasts and exploring lost ruins while practising his preferred variation of gear work. Clockwork Constructs.

Personality: Grahim wants to be an adventurer. It's filled his thoughts ever since that first story of his uncle's. He yearns for the excitement and sense of wonder he believes would be encountered in such a profession. Not so say that this completely overrides the teachings of his parents but Grahim doesn't want to limit himself to the restrictive traditions of his family's business. To the young wizard gears and springs are still a very important part of his identity but rather then just seeing them as only parts of time pieces Grahim believes they can be the canvas to which he expresses his artistic vision onto. But art, true art, needs inspiration and nothing inspires Grahim more then the thought of Adventure.

A very creative type, Grahim believes that with the right experiences he will become a far better craftsman then sitting at a work bench, toiling on the same projects every day, ever will. Part of Grahim still wants his parent to be proud of him but not unless they are proud of his personal choice of paths rather then the well worn trail they have already traveled.

@Taleteller50: When I think of the Tinker Gnomes I think of the ones out of Dragonlance for some reason. Sorry that I do :P lol. Yes, depends how crazy one those tinker gnomes can be or get lol. Though both the Kinder and those gnomes are more tolerable then the Gully Dwarves as least? lol. Nice concept, bit of a mechanic/engineer feel to him. Could be interesting during play if chosen?

HEY! Gully Dwarves are AWESOME! You just need to read Lost Histories #5 to see that

They were like proto-funny goblins before that became particularly popular. That said Hickman and Laura sure appeared to have a particular.. opinion about the shorter races. Ya there was the atypical dwarf in the hero party but that was greatly offset by the Gully dwarves not to mention the Kender being the most notable of the Halfling variants and the accident prone Tinker Gnomes. All foolish, if not down right buffoonish, almost to the point of self (and party) destruction while the rest of the 'world' is very clean cut and dramatic; taking itself possibly too seriously.

I will admit to a bias as it was Forgotten Realms that I engrossed myself into while growing up with only an occasional dip into Dragonlance waters but you have to admit; there does appear to be a particular 'theme' among short races in Dragonlance.

@taleterller50: Well most of the Dragonlance books I've read where mostly unkind with those three races, and was poked fun at some although more kind of disliked by most. I'm as well. it's my first favorite DnD setting behind Grayhawk and of course aforementioned Dragonlance by Hickman and Weis. Including Darksun. I've dipped into some of world and lore of Dragonlance some too, so only know somewhat of its lore and to me it had bit of The Lord of the Rings flavor peppered through out or at least seemed to have been influanced or not by it, intentional or unintentionally. Though with them becoming popular was do to the fact they get mentioning and writing about them with their books and those who are fans of the Dragonlance series and Hickman and Weis, made them so including the Campaign setting they wrote for the 3rd edition, themselves since they know their material and world better then anyone else of course. I know the Realms bit far more better and love the world that Ed Greenwood created decades long ago. Plus the with art from the likes of Todd Lockwood, including the books of RA Salvatore set with in Faerun helped sell the setting an the world an its lore to readers, fans, players and DMs. Making it far bit more interesting to me then, Dragonlance to a point that is lol. That's why I'm drawing more from the Realms. Though I think I do remember vaguely though they where to me at least mentioned prior to 3rd through 5th where released and have been forgotten and cut from most of the current incarnations lore. I could be wrong.

Oh ya, Faerun is definitely a more fleshed out setting then Dragonlance. In truth Dragonlance was an Adventure Path first, a story second, and a setting last. The original game didn't even let you make your characters, you had to choose from the original team designed by the writers. It was more like a LotR game where you had to choose which of the Fellowship you would act as and had to follow the plot of the original story rather then make decisions yourself.

Forgotten Realms on the other hand was a setting first and specific stories and adventures second (even if Ed designed it as a backdrop for his stories before even publishing under TSR). It really set the bar for world building for games from then on.

I use to love tracking down new FR books in my schools library and becoming engrossed in them. It was almost as good as finding Astirix or Elf Quest

What are the religious options if I was thinking of making some sort of paladin?

@taleteller50: Yes that is true and sounds like that would suck to play in and not worth most players time I'm sure lol. Agreed that is true it is more fleshed and more out there of it and yes it did set the bar for world building and has influenced me as a GM/DM when I make a new setting to, to set my games in. Which I like how Ed did that and even though most of the details where more fleshed out by TSR, Wizards and the authors who write the stories within there. So do I as well, there have been some great FR books and some not so great, although I haven't read all the books that have been written and set with the Realms, lol.

Well @taleteller50 and @Amarga it is more the core pantheon from the Core Rulebook of the deities that are being used so use them for Paladins and Clerics alright. Even though this inspired by Forgotten Realms and has same atmosphere and flavor as it. It actually uses the main pantheon with the main book of Pathfinder. Like how I put in with the games ad and the backgrounds character generation section of it. So will not be using FR one so please build accordingly, like you would for the core games setting though with a flavor of FR.

Alright Vesper and DebuRedHair look forward to seeing them.

Also just posting interest here as well, maybe with a wizard. It would also probably be my first time playing Pathfinder, but I’m not unfamiliar with the rules.
