Tales of Xunumos

Game NameTales of Xunumos
Game SystemFATE
ThemeAction/Adventure, Steampunk, Supernatural, Floating Islands & Airships, Giant Automatons
FlavourLighthearted, Anime-Style, Heroic
Plot SummaryInspiration: Final Fantasy, Breath of the Wild
Honorable Mentions: X-Men

# of Players: 3 (plus one other, whom I've already recruited)
Deadline: November the 22nd

The world has slowly recovered over a long period of time from an apocalypse that caused the world's dominant species to go nearly extinct; The only evidence of this previous era and the cause of the apocalypse are ancient ruins and the gargantuan bodies of dormant automatons that sit like statues and gaze into the horizon. A certain event causes the main character to manifest supernatural powers, but they soon find this boon to have its drawbacks when their presence awakens the ancient automatons, who proceed to chase them to the ends of the earth in an effort to eliminate them.

Hello everyone! I and a player who's new to Fate decided on the premise above for the game we would be playing, and we would love to bring some fellow adventurers along with us.

The "main character" as described in the prompt will be one of you, imbued with supernatural powers of your choice, and your story will be the driving force for the plot; don't worry, though, there will be plenty of opportunities for the spotlight to move to the "side" characters, and I will make sure that their stories get the time they deserve.

The campaign will begin with us establishing the MC's origins and getting them their powers - during which time they would be joined by the other PCs - and then I was thinking that the party would travel on an airship, move from flying island to flying island, maybe occasionally land on the savage surface of the planet, and also sometimes have ship-to-ship or ship-to-automaton combat.

What kinds of characters should you be thinking about, though? Something important to note before anything else is that not everyone has to have supernatural powers; in fact, it could just be the MC. Instead, your character could be a specialist in their own right, with a special knack or talent of their own. An exiled airship captain (full up on airship pilots, y'all), a savage berserker from the lowlands, a bookish tinkerer who's never left home; the possibilities are many.

For sentient races or creatures to choose from, take inspiration from things like Final Fantasy and Breath of the Wild; humans or human-like people are the most prolific, but there are also some pretty wacky demihumans or even full-on "monster"-type individuals which cooperate with society as a whole.

And that's it! You should be ready to make a concept for your character now. For the application itself, I just want a few things:

Name:

High Concept:
Trouble:

Description:

Backstory:

We'll be doing the Phase Trio and all that once all of the players are selected, so for now don't worry too much about your additional aspects, skills and stunts. If you have any questions, feel free to ask; good luck!

I'm posting this reply here as a placeholder; once my other player has a mockup of their character, I'll be able to show it to you as both an example and a preview of one of your fellow party members.

name: Roland
high concept: ambidextrous catfolk gunslinger
trouble: last of his kind

description & backstory
Roland stands six feet tall, with a pair of revolvers in low-slung draw holsters. he is a wanderer, unable to stay in one place for more than a couple days before he has to feel the wind on his face. a dangerous man stole an artifact from his home island and he's hunting him to attempt to get the artifact back, or die trying. he lovingly takes care of his guns, because that is all that remains of his life before the hunt.

Hell yes, I knew people wouldn't be able to resist the call of the cat-person trope. The only thing that would tie up your app in a pretty little bow is a nice character image, but it's alright if you can't find one.

Gotta find a better picture but this was my original inspiration
Soot WIP
right-aligned image

Name: Soot

High Concept: Mutant Tribal Warrior
Trouble: They call my people "Cannibals" and they fear us.

Description: Banded up like a mummy, following the customs of the Nomad tribes, Soot covers up his mutated sensitive skin from the dangers of the sun, with lenses covering his eyes. He is tall and slender, but quite wiry, as many of his kind. All his clothes are ragged and old, mostly leather. With some bullet case as necklace.

General Backstory: The Nomads, despite some differences, all lead more or less the same lives. Hunting, foraging, trading, travelling. The big misconception about nomads is that hey are crazy cannibals, that long for human flesh, but they actually just see it as a way to score more protein easily. Hunting a nest of arachnids takes the same amount of warriors as a caravan of humans, but the arachnids are deadlier and the meat is better quality with humans. Another stereotype about the Nomads is the fact that they follow a series of silly superstitions, but the truth is their their attunement with nature makes it so that they have better healing skills in the entirety of the continent.

Nomads are quite matter-of-factly people, rarely allowing emotions to interfere in their decision making. The stereotype of the 'crazy barbarian' mostly come from the fact that the only Nomad most people encountered was a "war powder" crazed warrior, ready to slaughter them despite the terrible injuries that the mutant suffered.

Nomads, due to their Mutant nature, also lost the ability to regular vocal speaking, relying on a series of grunts more or less common to all tribes, which severed every communication with the civilized world. A few cunning merchants managed to learn the Nomad language to develop trade, bringing Nomad artifacts and their alchemy (healing and otherwise) into the towns, usually in exchange for ammunition and other human-sourced goods.

Backstory: It was actually on a 'trading' event that Soot life changed forever, while his tribe was bartering with some merchants, a swarm of giant sand crawlers emerged from the ground and started feasting on the tribe, both the caravan people and the tribe unloaded all their ammo on the monsters, but they were unstoppable and fleeing was the only way to get out alive. Soot and a couple of other Nomads remained with the merchant caravan working as security and guides, being among the first Nomads to visit human cities and survive.

Extra: I was thinking that while he could understand everyone within the party, only the MC could understand Soot, some merchants or travelling sages might as well..

Hi, guys. I don't really know those references but I was inspired by the setting and thought I would run an idea past you to see if it fit in.

Not all people that survived the apocalypse did so by staying on the planet A few extremely wealthy and privileged folk left and made their way to the stars. Maybe it was an orbital station they fled to or maybe a colony on an alien world. Whatever the case, that new home was never designed or destined to be permanent. They had to return home eventually, perhaps reluctantly.

Olivia was in the first wave. An adventurous soul and a skilled pilot, she was amongst the first to volunteer. But her home coming was not greeted with loving open arms. She and her crew were quickly separated by the locals, and Olivia might have found herself a slave or worse until they found out that she was a pilot. Since then, she has been flying air ships for anyone who would hire her while trying to find out what happened to her people.

Short but sweet. Do you think this concept could fit into your world?

It's great! Turn that into an app, maybe find a nice character portrait if you can, and you'll be good to go.

The Halfman
right-aligned image

Thrade cal'Dar

High Concept: Traveling Historian
Trouble: I have no soul.

Description: Thrade appears to others as a callous and disinterested man. A young man, attired in traveling furs. He once belonged to nomadic shepherds and retains their stylings, but hardly has any sense of their charming and quick ways left in him after he was used and befouled by his betters.

Backstory: Thrade was raised among the nomadic shepherds of the Daratii sect of his people, always moving, seeking grazing lands and appreciative people. This traveling life attuned him to learning and meeting and appreciating the world around him. A world many, he learned, knew little of.

The Daratii sect was made of the lowliest of his people. The simpler and more hedonistically gregarious. When they returned to the higher Jsunbat holding to share news and trade, he was taken by force. Thrade had asked too many questions and had answers some of those named cal'Jsun did not appreciate. Old ruins had described a day when their people were different.

The higher clans always had their way. He was to be put to death for his insolence or to swear service to the Jsunbat sect, of which there was only one choice.

There was a reason the Jsunbat sect were in power. They had otherworldly powers. In his servitude, Thrade was eventually traded to a dark scholar to be used as the living component of her work. He survived under her for years, but was left for dead after she had taken the 'living' out of him.

Her magic had torn the soul from his body.

Abandoned to his fate, it came as a surprise to Thrade that he did wake again. Only, he did not feel surprise, nor rage at what had been done to him. He felt nothing. It took a long time for him to reclaim any sense of purpose. It was like teaching a crab to dance, but some logic in him dictated that to be human again he would need a purpose. So he sought the only thing he ever remembered wanting. The truth. History. The past.

Just as a note on "working our backstories together in a way that makes sense" if we all get in:

-Girlplay, for my backstory to be true and yours to make sense, there should be some "Interstellar" time-stretching shenanigans (very welcome, for me) to justify how in a single terrestrial lifetime a whole civilization (kind of a race on its own) started and spread a language and everybody on Earth forgot how&why the apocalypse happened. Which would lessen the impact of your OG "earthling" knowledge (like, why did this happen, how this technology works and the like..).

-Hitch, no real probs from me on having two nomads in the same party, mine simply got exposed at the apocalyptic event and yours didn't, or simply formed a bit later. If we both get in it simply means that the world just got a bit more tribal.

Application
right-aligned image

Name: Olivia Seifert

High Concept: Adaptable pilot for hire
Trouble: Lovely off-worlder

Description: Olivia is a flawless beauty who definitely hasn't seen hard work or hard times. Her somewhat idyllic upbringing was in large part thanks to the position of her parents and that she was not born and raised on this planet. She has soft hands, learned speech (with an unusual accent), and smiles too easily with perfect teeth. And stands out as unusual among the locals because of it. She has adopted local attire to try to blend in a little more but cares for her appearance probably more than she should. Old habits die hard and even if she's marooned, she still has standards that must be upheld!

Backstory:
Not all people that survived the apocalypse did so by staying on the planet A few extremely wealthy and privileged folk left and made their way to the stars. Maybe it was an orbital station they fled to or maybe a colony on an alien world. Whatever the case, that new home was never designed or destined to be permanent. Since then, she has been flying air ships for anyone who would hire her while trying to find out what happened to her crewmates. Eventually, she needs to find a way to report back to her people in orbit.

Language can develop pretty fast, especially in isolated groups. So, I don't see that as a major obstacle, other than the communication barrier it creates. As far as a race developing in however-long we are after the apocalypse, I think you're description as a mutant kind of points to something effecting your character's people that could have accelerated changes - like exposure to radiation or chemicals. Maybe their nomadic ways are in part because they seek out places that are actually hazardous for some kind of... religious significance (or something similar).

Just pitching ideas.

We could take the simpler route and say the spacefarers returned multiple generations afterward. We have no real clue what caused the apocalypse, but maybe return entry from space was impossible for generations due to some unforeseen atmospheric effect. The first wave were ready because they were waiting for this.

Maybe those lasting effects also left a sort of EMP-type effect which explains why the surface folk have devolved so much.
