[Game Thread] Part Two: The Attack on the Thorn River Camp

Helping Out Wincing at Bren's volume, Charlotte nods her head to tell him that they did catch the bandit before she brings a finger to her lips in a shushing motion. She then starts to inspect his ears and body, trying to get a better sense of his injuries as she says to the others. "We'll have to set up an ambush here. Bren has been injured, and i'll need time to get a better sense of how bad it is. And something is wrong with his hearing."   Dice Heal: 1d20+2 (15)+2 Total = 17

Bren Charlotte looks Bren over and finds that he is bleeding from blood vessels in his ears bursting from the concussion of the thunderstone. His other bruises, cuts, and scrapes come from falling off his horse at speed and then being knocked to the ground by another. None of his injuries are serious but it might take an hour or so before his hearing returns.

Informing the Group Charlotte turns her gaze to the group as she quickly begins barking out orders "Alright, we can't move toward their camp now that they know something is wrong, especially with Bren injured. So Ursion, you get the horses hidden a short distance up the trail. Kai, you get set up, since they are going to come investigate when that horse returns without its rider. Darian, you set up a short distance back the way we came. And Yarro and I shall set up in hiding to ambush them when they arrive... Now move, we don't know how long until they get here." She then turns back to Bren and pauses for a moment before quickly grabbing a sheet of parchment and pricking her thumb and quickly writing "Go with Ursion, we will deal with the other bandits."

Darian Vanderan Darian pauses just long enough to take a drink from his waterskin. When Charlotte gives her direction, our cavalier is only too happy to oblige. Nodding, he allows Kai an opportunity to dismount. Then, Darian steers Hardbiter back down the path, Dice Survival: 1d20+5 (2)+5 Total = 7 scoping the area for a position reasonable to set up for a possible charging opportunity. Of course, scouting an area has yet to be one of our cavalier's strong suits...

 

Allows Kai to dismount. Moves back...IDK, 300 feet back the way we came. Or until something stops me. Using Survival skills to try setting up tactically in case someone's waiting to ambush me with a bag of pennies or something. I'll stay put for 5-10 rounds and then report back.

Kai gets off of the horses back, thankful to be in charge of his own direction once again. He quickly runs to Bren's side to have a look at him. though the halfling had little skill in the healing arts, he was ready and willing to do anything he could for the lad.

Thumbs up Bren notices Kai's concern etched upon his face as the halfling comes over to check him out. There is no worry etched there but Bren can still see that Kai is concerned to make sure he is ok. Though not skilled in the healing arts, Kai knows enough of combat and wounds to tell that Bren's are not life-threatening at the moment and that he will recover from them all. Bren gives Kai a thumbs up and then moves out to do what Charlotte commanded him. He takes up the mounts of the others and begins to move through the thick underbrush to find a suitable place to hide the tired and lathered mounts.

Horse Duty Ursion listens to charlotte and responds accordingly. He does his best to get the horses together and quietly lead them away. "Blasted beasts...never did like them." With Bren they led them about 50 yards away. He said quietly to himself "This should be far enough where they won't get spooked." He looked at Bren and noticed he was still walking so he jogged up to the side of him doing his best not to spook him. Once he got his attention he did his best with hand gestures to point out to wait here for the time being. When Bren was able to understand, Ursion went back double time to the group. Upon getting back he went up to the group softly and asked "So whats the plan?" Ursion was eager to fight this morning, which he knew was never a good sign, for the bandits at least. Darian Vanderan: Perception, or Lack Thereof. Darian does his best to maintain a watchful eye, but he is a bit distracted. The openness of the forest clearing, the fresh air...he was comfortable here. Too comfortable. His ambition for claiming the Greenbelt for Rostland has seen our cavalier decapitate a feared bandit leader, and join-up with a worthy group of adventurers; he was becoming complacent. And that's never good.

All set Darian Vanderan sits atop Hardbiter doing his best to try and stay focused. Unfortunately, the young cavalier's mount is having an easier time attended to the task at hand than his rider. Different thoughts and emotions wander in and out of the mind of the cavalier as he fights off the edginess that comes with waiting on any pending conflict. Though his mind wanders and he pays little attention to what the forest might tell him about the approach of their enemies, Darian is nonetheless ready for whatever comes their way. He turns back north and can see Bren taking care of the mounts of the others. The former-bandit hits his hand against each of the sides of his head around his ears as he continues to struggle with his hearing. Ursion comes quietly jogging past Darian after having helped Bren with the horses and the sorcerer stumbles through the thick underbrush and begins to find a suitable hiding spot as well. Although he can't see them, Darian knows that Yarro and Charlotte have taken up positions each on opposite sides of the small game trail where they can see the approach from the south and attack from cover. For his part, the stalwart and quiet Kai stands in the middle of the trail, waiting on whatever may come their way. The forest around the group remains quiet following the thunderstone as the whole of the wood appears to be holding its collective breath in anticipation of what may come. Darian sits atop Harditer paying little heed to what the forest might be saying to him.

 

Below is a map. Don't laugh. I'm trying to get better at preparing meaningful tactical maps for you. Hopefully this one helps. Put this post up to make sure that I have you all where you want to be. If you want to change anything, just let me know. Assume that Darian cannot be seen from his spot because of the foliage in the trail that requires coming around the bend. Yarro, Charlotte, and Ursion are in the thick underbrush at the side of the trail. They will have cover, like Felton did, in case of combat. They also receive bonuses to hide checks if needed. Kai, well, he's in the middle of the trail. If Kai doesn't want to be there, just let me know where he wants to be. Remember, moving out of the squares with the thick foliage can only be done at HALF movement.

Bren and the other horses are off the map to the north.

Kai waits patiently, standing in plain sight. He stills his mind, ignores the cold, and prepares for the future confrontation. Any bandits that passed by would likely be drawn to him, which suited his purposes fine. It would lead the enemy into an ambush while also luring his enemies within range of his fists. There was always the chance that they would simply fire at him, but Kai was betting the bandits would be bold enough to approach a harmless-looking lone halfling who wore no armor.

Darian Vanderan, Cavalier of The Greenbelt. Darian maintains his position, waiting patiently for any sign or noise that might command his expedient aid. And, he admired the fresh air. The area south of Restov is truly wonderful this time of year.

Keeping Watch Charlotte has been keeping watch from her position in the underbrush, scanning the trail for any signs of movement, or the approach of the bandits. Heading partway toward Darian, she softly called out to him. "Darian.. Do you think that I should scout up ahead? To see if they are truly coming?"   Dice Perception (Normal): 1d20+6 (11)+6 Total = 17 Dice Perception (Bandits): 1d20+8 (17)+8 Total = 25

Darian Vanderan, Cavalier of The Greenbelt. Darian comes out of his daydream when Charlotte approaches and speaks to him. Well...there seems to be little happening back this way. I think you should move on up ahead, I'll move up to your former location and keep watch over Bren. We should watch our backs, though. Darian quietly tugs at Hardbiter's reins, ready to move just slightly forward - if only with caution.

Agreeing Charlotte nods and says "Alright, I'll trust you guys to keep a sharp eye out until I return. And please warn the others not to shoot at me? I'll imitate a thrush when I return." before she began heading further in the direction of the camp, trusting the others to keep watch over her back. She quietly advances through the underbrush, keeping her eyes wide as she goes.

Here they come Kai stands calmly in the center of the game trail. Head bowed and eyes closed, with his hands clasped at his waist in front of him, the halfling monk is the picture of calm. Determined and resolute, Kai waits patiently for the battle that is coming. With a strength of mind and will that is difficult for the others to comprehend he slows his breathing and manages his pulse. Adrenaline is kept in check so that he is in total control of his body. Violence is coming. He doesn't desire it, it isn't his choice, but he will be ready to make sure that he prevails. In stark contrast to the patient halfling, Charlotte barely gets settled before moving out to confer with Geldar. With his agreement she decides to scout ahead. She barely gets back to her original location and prepares to move again when Kai notices that the time is at hand. In time others would speculate that he was able to feel the vibrations of the coming horses through his feet; others that he noticed a change in the air; while some said that he heard them approach before any of the others. However he knew, Kai simply knew that two riders were approaching at a trot before they ever came into view or any of his companions had any idea. Just as Charlotte is about to move out two riders appear on the trail south of Kai. Evil smiles cross their faces as they draw their short swords. Kicking spur to flank, the riders urge their mounts forward into a charge, intent on cutting the halfling in half in the middle of the road.

 

The two riders are one round from getting to Kai.
Charlotte and Yarro will have one round of free action and then we will move to initiative. Everyone else is free to act as well, but those are the only two that could make ranged attacks. Darian could come around from his spot but would only join the fray in the next round.
