September PotM

<-- On the left you see my town's square that won an award. The weird cheese statue (it isn't cheese but nobody knows what it is), the water fountains and the light reflecting on the water, it's supposed to be worthy of an award. Well, yeah , it must have been nominated at one point.

SPEAKING OF NOMINATIONS --> you know what to do but I will repeat the drill:
  • Spot it! Spot an awesome post from a player in your group, the DM or you think your own post was standing out
  • Share it! Post in this thread where to find the post, who you are nominated and share with us WHY you thought this post was special. Why did it stand out? What happened that triggered you into thinking; 'wow, this one is special'?
  • Reward it! Add some well-deserved RPXP to the post and if you read other nominations; share the respect and use that

It's easy, it's important and it's very appreciated to let others be aware of a good post you found on the Crossing. We love a good read so nominate :-)

Post: Striking a Spark

Reason for Nomination: Lazer's character, Azar, has probably the most complicated relationship with our story of any PC. This has created many opportunities to explore her motivations and goals as her past is thrust into conflict with her present and future. Lazer never disappoints in these moments. His depth of understanding of the strong, but vulnerable, Azar is unmatched, and he writes so compellingly from her point of view!

This post takes place as Azar comes face to face with the destruction wrought on the minotaur town of Gramvar; a destruction wrought, in part, by her own treachery. In reading this, I could feel Azar's guilt, her fear of being exposed, and her pain at what her actions have unleashed on the world and cost her personally.

NominationPlayer: Fillyjonk
Game: Rise of the Drow
System: D&D 5E
GM: Atrayn
Post: Undercover Drow

Reason for Nomination: In this game, the oppressive and militant Klavek empire dominates the native Vikmordere people of a snowy valley, but in the remote colony of Rybalka, a new enemy has arisen, common to both. Drow attacked and kidnapped colonists, under cover of magical darkness, as our party, composed of three Klavs, a Vikmordere and a couple of outsiders, tried to fight them off. Fillyjonk joined our group when we were about a year into play, and in overland pursuit of the drow captors, through this perpetual night. She was a masked Vikmordere woman, part of a zealous and skilled group of anti-drow guerilla warriors, with a mission to join us and aid us in killing drow.

Y'all, she was a drow the whole time. For months of play she wore a mask, played her human sorcerer, even used Alter Self with subtle spell to show us the destroyed visage of a burned face ruined by a religious ritual, as a sign of trust. Well, as you can see by this beautiful custom character art she made, Myrrh the Burned is burned but not ruined, a drow-killer and a drow, and every bit a zealot. I can imagine a situation where a twist like this would lead us to feel like we'd been played, or lied to, but Fillyjonk's masterful tip-toeing between disguise and misrepresentation puts us in a place where we all have to just take our hats off to her play. Amazing twist, completely legit set-up, and flawless timing!

I'm nominating the post where she does her reveal, but really her play for the last few months was all so good, and I want to recognize Atrayn our awesome DM as well, for brewing all of this coolness with her.

GM: Hal Hammerhand
Post: Estelle - the Solitary Knight

Reason for Nomination: I already knew how talented a writer and storyteller DaniLore was prior to this post but even so, this one caught me flat-footed by how excellent it was. Its never an easy thing to do to introduce a character into a new game, its hard at that point because I often find its not until a game starts and you've posted a number of times that you start to get a feel for the character you have created and how they are. But this post just absolutely nailed the introduction in a way that was simply perfect. The personality of Estelle is so extremely well defined in this post that it just absolutely drips with character. DaniLore's use of vocabulary and description is absolutely on-point here.

I'd say more, but in all honesty I feel the post speaks for itself.

Post: A Fae introduction, of sorts.

Reasons for Nomination: I frequently (when I remember) ask my players if there are any posts that they think are good enough to nominate for PotM considerations. This time the group suggested that I throw up my own post for nomination.

In there own words:

To further explain things: My players are a group of amazing writers, featuring a group that has previously won Post of the Month and Post of the Year. They are creative and are constantly keeping me on my toes in terms of the direction that they make things go. While I'm along for the ride, it also helps me to "step up my own game" and constantly looking for ways to elevate my own writing. This is part of the results of that process.

A crazy situation seemed to need an equally crazy response. How else do you respond to several bards, illusions, performances and spells all being used to "trick" the Fae who had been "having fun" in their own forest? Using the Fae's own tactics against them was a great response, and the Fae themselves were willing to acknowledge a good trick in its own right. Also, the post was used as a way to introduce multiple NPCs to the characters, but also in a way that shows them each with their own personality. It requires a bit of Multiple Personality Disorder to pull off. There are also a few hints, clues, and world-building that will eventually be revealed during the future of the campaign.

Post: Downtime: a Mystery to solve, going home

Reason for Nomination: Our characters is the game are spending a week off from 'adventuring' and each pursuing their own 'downtime' activities. Pinotage's character Aqua is a member of the Watch and as such reports for duty during this time. I love how Pinotage weaves a mystery...one it seems she is going to continue to eek out over the next several 'down time' weeks as they come up..and also gives us great insight into her character by taking Aqua home, under the waves of Waterdeep harbor and having her reflect on all the other characters. This is just a lovely post, well written, and a great example of what can be done in 'downtime.'
