The land and the people

The world
The planet has a rather curious feature, namely planetary rings that are visible from the surface. In Soregai, they look like a wide shimmering band that arches across the sky from horizon to horizon. During the night, they look like a band of light, obscuring many stars and constellations. There is only one moon, smaller and more distant than Earth's.

Basic facts
Soregai is the southern region of the continent of Akhgar, with a surface of approximately 450.000 square kilometers or 280.000 miles (about the size of Sweden or slightly larger than California). The population is estimated somewhere around 550.000 inhabitants, about 40% living in cities along the coast in the northern half of the continent.

Geography
To the east is the Sea of Crabs, dotted by a number of volcanic islands. Very old legends among the Khoe suggest that the sea was formed in an enormous cataclysm that almost shattered the world and gave continents the shape they have today. To the north there is a great landmass, home to many nations, some of which have trade relations with the northern inhabitants of Akhgar. To the west and south there is a vast ocean and it is said that those who sailed too far to the west have encountered an archipelago of uninhabited islands, home to all manner of birds and plants.

Akhgar itself lies in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the planet, in its southern hemisphere. The northern half of the continent is humid and fertile, with a range of mountains stretching along the western side. As the traveler moves southwards, the terrain gradually becomes more arid until it turns into an inhospitable desert that covers a third of the southern half of the continent. The southern tip of the continent is a large peninsula connected only by a narrow strip of land, an area prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. A string of islands heads eastwards from the tip of the peninsula in a wide curve across the Sea of Crabs.

PopulationIn the northern part of Akhgar, the population is almost evenly split between humans living in coastal cities and elves living in the dense jungles and forests inland. Half-elves are the third largest demographic, followed by gnomes, dwarves, halflings and a very small population of half-orcs.

In the southern half of the continent (where the game starts), the population is predominantly human and elven, although it is not entirely unheard of for a member of another race, most often from a trade outpost, to "go native" and join one of the wandering Khoe tribes, who form the vast majority of inhabitants in Soregai.

The Khoe

SocietyThe Khoe are generally gentle people possessed of a certain innocence. Greed is almost unknown to them, as is theft. They don't wage war on other peoples, but they will defend themselves if attacked. When hunting and in the rare occasions when they're fighting other sentients, they will prefer ambush tactics.

Khoe tribes have very little hierarchy. They are generally led by a wise woman and an elder man who somehow distinguished himself - Old Moon and Old Sun. Their continued leadership depends on how the tribe fares under their guidance and if they take too many poor decisions or somehow anger the gods or the spirits, they may be replaced. Old Moon generally presides over matters of spirituality, healing of all kinds, intra-tribe relations, while Old Sun is in charge of matters relating to the tribe's survival, like migration routes, hunting, population control, distribution of resources and the very rare skirmish with other sentient beings.

Religion and spiritualityThe Khoe have two major deities - the Sun and the Moon. As the two astral bodies govern separates time of a day/night cycle and rarely intersect, so their gods govern separate aspects of the Khoe's life. Women are generally dedicated to Xa, the Moon, while men are dedicated to Sore, the Sun. Aside from these two gods, the Khore pay their respects to a multitude of spirits of the land and ancestor spirits. There is also a third deity, a trickster and a deceiver, the one who brought evil into the world, but the Khoe dislike talking about it or even mentioning its name.

CustomsThe Khoe have several very important rituals: one at a child's first anniversary, when the new life is received into the tribe; another as a child reaches adulthood and their path in life is shaped; and another at the death of a tribe member, to send off their soul. There are also rituals for starting or ending a hunt, for picking a new temporary site for their dwelling, for the beginning of a committed relationship, for trading with other tribes or with outsiders and so on.

Gender roles and familyMen deal with hunting and most crafting, while women deal with herb lore, healing, spiritual matters (magic, dream interpretation, some exclusive rituals). Children are raised by their immediate family, lacking that they are raised by their extended family. If they have neither, they are raised by a surrogate family.

EconomyThe Khoe do not use money, although they are aware of the concept. Instead, they barter goods and services. They are self-sufficient, producing everything they need, but they are also interested in unusual items, artwork and decorations and metal items. The majority of their tools and weapons are made of wood, bone and flint or obsidian, using leather, animal hair or vegetable fibers to keep them together. There are tenuous trade relations with small non-Khoe trading outposts dotted along the western coast or established in permanent oases.

AppearanceAll the native humans of Soregai are dark-skinned, ranging from caramel to almost black, and dark-haired (mostly black). Elves native of the region follow a similar pattern, but in a lighter variation. Elves coming from the northern part of the continent have a variety of defining physical traits, same as other races that are not native to the southern part of Akhgar.

Language and namesThe Khoe language is characterized by a number of click consonants. They have names similar to those found in southern and eastern Africa.

TribesTwo of the most prominent Khoe tribes are Namaqua and Korana. While relations between them have been historically peaceful, they have significant differences in their philosophy and outlook. Namaqua tend towards practicality and stoicism, while Korana embrace spirituality and magical practices. The most valued members of a Namaqua community are strong, swift hunters, cunning warriors and women skilled in healing. Namaqua are the only Khoe tribe who attacks travelers in the waste and sometimes even the caravans headed to and from the trade outposts on the west coast of Soregai. Korana are much more peaceful, a tribe of craftsmen, herders, wisewomen and shamans. They are said to posses lore that most other Khoe tribes have forgotten.
