Alright, finally getting my life back to sort-of normal. Regarding sci-fi versus fantasy feel, I think it's true that most of us have more gaming background in the Fantasy world, so appreciating a scifi item is a bit more of a stretch. I tried to have the Tranfmogrifier bridge that gap by clearly referencing transmuters and alchemists (playing off relatively well-known DnD / PF tropes) while also giving it a weird science vibe. I was trying to build an item/world on the cusp of a magitech revolution. I think it worked out relatively well. But I'll point out that my "95% chance that Gaijin trounces me" hypothesis is gaining a bit more ground with him getting second while I tried for 3rd.

Per the SciFi/fantasy discussion, I don't want to jinx myself, but I feel writing SciFi gives you an advantage!
Most of the judges said they want interesting takes on the ingredients and they either want tropes avoided or used with interesting twists. SciFi forces you to put an interesting spin on fantasy centric items and Shadowrun has no sex deviant bards, lawful stupid paladins, and mustache twirling near do wells. Granted, it has its own sets of tropes, but I'll bank that the judges haven't seen them done to death by now! That's the hope anyway! With 80% of my GMing done in Shadowrun and Warhammer 40k, it's the only leg up I've got!

From Round 1 forward, I definitely agree!
Once subject to careful scrutiny, all of the deviancy and subtly of sci-fi has a chance to shine. It's just in the qualifying round, where the word limit is small, the competitors are numerous, and success depends upon popular vote, that being different has diminishing returns. Take it and run with it!

Well, ****. I edited my "acknowledgement post" for a typo, thinking that the "do not edit rule" applies only to the actual entry. Oops.

I'm hoping to bring a spotlight to the Modern-Conspiracy-horror genre - something in the area around X-Files meets Dresden Files. Regardless of the degree of success I'll have with that, it's great to be rubbing shoulders with this much talent from all across the RPGxing community! I was the Put-n-Take Spinner guy (Mystic Teetotum)... bty, it's a fun game just some words of advice should you decide to play some day. Don't play with an antique spinner, even if (especially if) it's a gift from a stranger. Even if you're doing well with it, after a year toss it away and buy a new one. Remember, just because you're paranoid, doesn't meant that they're not out to get you! - Savy

Yes, first day to be spent brainstorming, crosschecking relevant older Iron DMs again, thinking of what setting my fry up needs to take place in. Of course if everyone else in my thread went sci-fi, being the lone fantasy entry might have the same or similar positive effect that a sci-fi or modern entry normally has...

Stayed up late working on my entry and ended up having dreams about it. Stupid dream could have at least had the right ingredients for me!
Maybe it'll be my finally winning entry? I made sure to make notes as soon as I woke up!

@Imveros and others.
Yeah, I find certain challenges make insomnia much more likely. Whether it's changing a water pump on an 81 924 turbo, considering lines/paths in my Symbaroum game, or writing for a challenge I'm not realistically in, I still toss and turn. The more I'm invested and excited about it, the more technical it is, or if unexpected difficulties arise, the more I ruminate on it. I know it affects my sleep as I grudgingly drift off with it on my mind and it is still there in the early fog of morning awakening. Although it makes the drive into work fly by. I don't need music when my mind is already buzzing about.

Just a question. As I didn't read prior IronDM challenges before submitting Round 0 (probably why I am an alternate), I did read some in preparation for posting for Round 1.
I've seen some list how they addressed the ingredients. I assume this doesn't count against word count, but thought I'd ask. Thanks.

I think the spirit of the word count is to set a limit on the amount that the Judge's need to read. So, I would highly recommend assuming that all visible text is restricted by the word limit. Since it's just context information, don't spend more than a sentence or two highlighting how you used the ingredients. If you need to use more than a partial sentence, it might be too obscure or convoluted.
