Chapter 1: Purano and the Festival of a Thousand Petals

Purano, Close to the Docks, Month of Peace - As seen by a Seene"Most interesting stone, that." Jysh, the Uxian Proprietor of the modestly sized Trading House that bore his name had been eager to inspect the gem that they brought him after greeting Nergui like an old friend. The building itself had been merely a ten minute walk from where Zaqrahs ship had finally docked and was facing a small market square at least as busy as the riverfront in Othdad.

Yet this place seemed to be very specialised in what Voitleja could only assume were pieces of jewellery and decorative trinkets, some of them having the patina and wear of a very long age. At least he could see no other use for the goods on display, but some of it even seemed vaguely familliar to him in style - possibly even made by a Seenes Hands. Long ago maybe.

The Trading House had been open on one side to the market square, but Jysh had led them into the back offices were people seemed very busy polishing, restoring or merely debating over some piece of jewellery or other to get them ready for sale. "Well - it's the first of its kind I've ever seen, frankly." Jysh was a stout looking creature with too much make-up applied to his cheeks and around the eyes, making his face look slightly mask-like. Even Voitleja could see the particles of the rougeing agent and the kohl easily with his sonar.

"Doesn't appear to be very old - at least it looks like the stone was cut recently. I could be wrong here - so I'd like to get a second opinion for you." An attendant was nearby and ready to act upon the command before it was even properly issued - darting away to collect whichever specialist Jysh wanted to consult. Just a little while later a Keita was led into the room, standing relatively tall for his race. Jysh handed over the Gem under the watchful eyes of Nergui before the Specialist started to inspect the Stone.

Purano, Close to the Docks, Month of Peace - One eye on the PriceIt was another hot day in Purano. The sun was out in full force, and it made Tham glad that he was somewhere with plenty of shade provided by the thousands of buildings shaping the city. It was an exciting time too, what with the Festival of a Thousand Petals around the corner. It had at some point been dedicated to the memory of the end of a war centuries ago, but was now emptied of deeper meaning, simply a celebration of life - and commerce.

The latter part was what interested Tham on this day. He had been looking at various markets already checking out which wares foreign traders had brought into the city to pander to locals and tourists alike. The streets and markets were crowded with customers, entertainers, food vendors and gawkers, making progress slow and sluggish.

For the most part it there was little that piqued his interest out on the open markets, so eventually he decided to get inside and check out what the more specialised trading houses had for sale. Jyshes Trading House was busy as always, even though it was one of the smaller establishments. Mostly it peddled in ancient Uxian jewellery and precious cut gems, but as the Keita browsed he saw that nothing exciting had come in recently - nothing that he hadn't seen already anyway. He had often done consulting for them - essentially offering a second opinion to their own specialists estimate of age and value.

As it happened one of the clerks of Jysh hurried his way and urged him to take a very quick look at an item surely of interest to him. Tham let himself be led into the back offices, where Jysh the Ux himself was seated in front of a rugged looking Tsing Goun female clad in armour and a strange gnarly giant in furs.

A Gem was thrust into his hands, sending tingles down his arm immediately. It was glittering and seem to have no definite colour, a glassy rainbow. After the initial shock Tham took a closer look at the object.

OOCIt might be prudent to have Eryzule respond first - so he can give his assessement of the item.

ThamAfter a moment, Tham lifted his head and removed his hood. His singular eye seemed to be watering, forming tears on either side. A large, toothy grin spread from cheek to cheek as he shook his head in earnest disbelief. He placed a hand to head, as if to wrangle his own thoughts back into place.
He sighed with a slight chuckle before whistling to ease his rising enthusiasm and bewildering imaginations. Finally, he spoke, looking to gem.

“I have never imagined or bore witness to something so unique…”

He looked to those present, the large, black pupil that encompassed nearly all of his eye wandering over each person curiously, his smile never fading. The gem shifted along his thin fingers as each probed its angles, feeling the precision of each cut and their edges.

“Who found this? Where did it come from? Are their more? The power this gem radiates…I have no idea what can be done with it!”

He looked back to the gem, tilting his head to one side as he brought both hands up, each clasping their fingers gently on the jewels surface. “Can I catalog it’s material? If its a type of gem or crystal, I should be able to determine its physical make up. That would give us something to start for a base of price.” His voice trailed off.

OOCCould one use the spell "Seek Earth" and specify that what is being sought only be crystal matrices? IE: Seek crystal/precious jewels so that this item may beacon to the caster?

Purano, Jysh Trading House, Month of PeaceJysh grunted slightly and threw a sideways glance at Tham, most of his attention still on the Tsing Goun. "We are usually in the business of answering questions Nergui - forgive us. I would not dare question you about the provenance of the gem, but might you know where the stone was cut?"

Nergui in turn held the glance of Jysh for a few heartbeats before saying flatly. "Human lands, most like." Turning to Tham she added: "What's that power you talkin' about?"

The Ux waved a hand adorned by many rings as if to drive away an unpleasant smell. "I assume the price is what interests you most though, right? Tham - if it is really is an item as unique it might be prudent to just tell our customers what you would pay for it if you had unlimited funds at your disposal."

OOCI am no gemologist, but not sure exactly what you mean by determining its physical make-up by cataloguing the material. As far as you and Jysh are aware it is a truly unique piece of Gemstone, so what you see - and can feel by touching its surface - is all that you know about it right now. You can certainly write that down though for future reference.

Anyway, getting more into detail on the mundane physical properties: It's a slightly translucent stone whose surface shimmers in a swirling mix of all colours, the patterns changing depending on how the light hits it. It's been cut into the common oval shape you find with many other gems, but it is a little smaller than fist sized. It's not particularly heavy for its size.

You can certainly cast a Seek Earth spell while excluding everything but gems like this (which is what I assume you want to do), but the spell only covers an area of 200 yards around you in an unmodified state. A larger Radius modifies the spellcasting roll in the following way:
Half a Mile -1
One Mile -2
3 Miles -3
10 Miles -4
30 Miles -5
100 Miles -6
300 Miles -7
1000 Miles -8
And another -2 per additional factor of 10

To cover the city is easily 10 miles (a touch more actually), to cover the whole island would need over 300 miles (from where you are it's around 400 miles actually to get everything).

ThamShaking his head and gathering his composure, stoically looking over the piece. The keita let out a sigh as he considered a price.
"To those without magical affinity... Its a unique crystalline piece of art. Depending on the market, arguably 5-10 thousand."

He looked about, a grin forming to his face again. "However, as it obviously has magical properties, that could easily double. larger multiple, if we can find out how to tap into the mana within before it's sold." He offered a shrug before reluctantly offering the jewel back, perching it in his fingers, for additional inspection if needed.

He found himself in awe and wanted to inquire more, but the backhanded comment made it clear that he had not performed professionally. He choked down the urge and remained silent until asked further information.

OOCFor now, Tham will remain professional and not go over board with magic use. He'll wait until after business here is concluded.

VoitlejaThe pale giant in furs seemed, at first glance, to not be interested in the conversation here. His 10 foot frame stood straight upright a step or so behind the Tsin-Goun, not looking at any of the participants but instead slowly turning his flat topped half-head side to side. His lips occasionally parted, revealing an array of large, flat teeth, but no audible sound came out. The only other movement was the occasional shifting of his 4 long, thin arms to adjust the weight of the pack and glaive on his back, and the shuffling of his flat, circular feet.

When Tham mentioned the magical properties of the gem, however, his demeanor changed. Although he had no eyes to stare with, he leaned forward over the vulture woman's shoulder, his torso bending in an gentle curve. His mouth opened again, perhaps to ask a question or perhaps for the same soundless reason it had been before, but he decided to defer to Nergui at this point. If she didn't ask about tapping into the mana however, he might.

Purano, Jysh Trading House, Month of PeaceThe Tsing Goun took the Gem with her feathered hand and stuffed it away somewhere beneath her leather harness. "So ten thousand times how badly someone wants the stone - that a conservative estimate?"

"Well, we can certainly find the right buyer for you and get a better..." Nergui had cut of the Uxian Auctioneer by raising her hand sharply. She looked thoughtfully over to Voitleja for a minute before turning back towards Jysh, holding her other hand over the spot where she had stored the gem. "I'm sure you could - but not today. For the time being Pad Zaqrah will pay you handsomely to keep quiet about the gem. Somebody will be in touch with you later." Pad is a word that at least Voitleja had heard before - it was some sort of honorific title for the rich or influencal in Uxian culture. Until now he had not heard it out of Nerguis mouth, but maybe she was more learned than she had let show.

The Tsing Goun turned back to Tham then. "Zaqrah is our employer" With a hand she indicated the gnarly giant next to her.

"What concerns me more right now - say this gem really is so special, and I don't feel any of it, and say it really is worth many times ten thousand pieces of gold. If you speak about tapping into whatever makes this rock special, who's to tell me it's not just going to be sucked dry, reducing it to a mere ten again. We just rode here on a ship that cost easily four times that, and Zaqrah has many of them. You see my problem?"

"We'd never do anything to harm your goods, I assure you Captain Jebtsa." Jyste had raised both his hands in a warding gesture. The Ux had started to transpire slightly and looked lost with the direction the conversation was taking.

Nergui threw a sideways glance at Voitleja then and shifted about in her seat trying to get more comfortable for a moment. The Seene thought she clearly had more to say to him, but was holding back because they were with company. Eventually she focused in on the Keita again. "So you a Mogh then? A Mage? Or a Trader? You see - we will be going to the Towers next to have this stone looked at by one. They'll want to rip it out of my hands to test it in all sorts of ways - and I wouldn't even know if they have made it worthless afterwards. Either way they will tell Zaqrah it is, just so they can buy it for themselves. Those are all problems, you see?"

ThamThe keita nodded in response after Nergui finished talking. He brought a couple fingers up to his chin, as if to further think on the perceived intent of her inquiry. This was a business exchange after all. He thought it best to avoid being too comfy around people at this time.

"To answer your first question, Yes." He paused briefly thinking on if he had answered to simply but carried on after a shrug to himself.

"If I understand you properly, you'd like someone to help ensure your not taken advantage of?" he considered the word carefully not wanting to insinuate that anyone there was likely a fool to be played. "So...you want to take me with you?" His question ended with his mouth twisting into a large smile that simply could no longer be contained.

Realizing that he was getting excited, he attempted to reduce the smile by sucking in his lower lip and compressing what he could into a smirking pucker. His hands clasped each other, raising just below his chin. "Am I right?" He asked while still trying, and failing, to contain his excitement while looking up to the seene.

VoitlejaThe giant merely turned his head to Nergui to indicate that he was deferring to her. Not his decision to make, although having someone around who could sense the power in the stone could prove very useful. He knew that he was not good at reading facial expressions at all, but the Keita seemed honest enough. And eager to please, certainly.

Purano, Jysh Trading House, Month of PeaceNergui kept her eyes on Voitleja for a second, her brow furrowed as she was trying to read his expression. A lack of eyes was certainly a problem there, but the Tsing Goun had spent likely the most time around the Seene and so was usually able to get the gist of his feelings.

Yet what Nerguis assessement was Tham did not know as she turned back to him. "Yes - I had a good think about that. You could just be a sweet talker of Jyshs feeding us lies - not that you would do such a thing, I know." The soldier had raised a hand preemptively as the Uxian Proprietor almost had started to protest.

"...But it would be a damn lucky coincidence for a liar to bring up magic without knowing what happened with the stone up until now." Nerguis eyes briefly flicked in the direciton of Voitleja before they focused back onto the Keita. "Yet if you are indeed a Mogh it may be a lie that comes easily."

The Tsing Goun lifted up a hand to scratch the base of her black and shiny beak with a claw, a motion Voitleja knew already quite well. "However, our Employer has been looking for magical support... So under the circumstances you could indeed accompany us - with the knowledge that should your services be deemed worthwhile by Pad Zaqrah afterwards there may be some good coin in it for you." An added pause implied the consequences of trickery. While Tham had never heard of this Zaqrah he only needed to look at Nergui to know this.

"Do us the courtesy of telling us your name first though. You already know mine." The Tsing Goun lifted her eight feet frame out of the small wicker chair Jysh had provided and motioned Voitleja that they were leaving. "Pad Jysh, always a pleasure. Somebody will be in touch shortly. Be content in the knowledge that still you may sell this gem at some point in the future." With that Nergui walked off briskly, stopping only on the square outside of the trading house.

VoitlejaThe Seene turned to follow, but paused for a moment. "It was good to meet you both. I am Voitleja," he said, speaking for the first time in this meeting. His voice was deep and resonant, and while he spoke the language confidently his accent was odd and impossible to place. His inflection was strange too, placing emphasis on seemingly random syllables.

A few long strides brought him out to the plaza outside, where he bent down to bring his mouth near Nergui's head and spoke quietly. "Gici spoke of the stone being charged, and that creature spoke of the mana within. I think he knew of what he spoke." Voitleja paused for a moment, and then continued. "In addition, there is something I did not mention. When the stone became recharged, it was warmer. I may be able to tell if those in the tower sap it, as you said."

ThamTham gasped with excitement, his hands lifting into the air with great enthusiasm as he yipped with a kind of childish joy.
"Ah-ha! Finally! Something less mundane!"
He gave a bow to the Tsing Goun as his name was asked for. "Oh, right. I am Tham. That's all there is to my name." He adjusted his posture as they left then looked to the Seene. with a similar enthusiasm, almost forgetting that he was there at all.
The vernacular used by Mr. Voitleja confused Tham terribly. His smile shifted to a small, albeit confused smirk. He finally gave a nod, "Yes. It was nice to meet you too." his tone was, awkward.

Not entirely sure if he was invited to follow or not he ultimately chose to follow the seene, thinking that if anyone knew where he would be most useful they'd would likely be found near the tallest entity he could find within the group of people he had just met. sliding next to Voitleja, Tham grinned. "So...What's the plan?" He asked, as he brought his staff over his shoulder, balancing his arms over the object as he stretched his arms.

Purano, Month of PeaceNergui walked ahead with Voitleja, exchanging a few more private words with the Seene before Tham had finally caught up with them after a brief moment of consideration. "The warmth is a thought, sure. But it does not appear to be warm right now, does it to you?"

Briefly placing the Gem into the hands of the Seene revealed that it had returned to normal temperature. Nergui quickly tucked the stone away again lest anybody outside of the trading house should see. She seemed less worried about it now and said almost nonchalantly: "Well - maybe it's the charging that does it, but what do I know? Besides, we have the guy to check for us now."

Indicating behind her with one thumb the Tsing Goun halted outside for Tham to catch up. She turned towards the eager Keita as he was limbering up with he help of his staff. "Right now we're going to the Arcane Towers, meet up with more of Zaqrahs men and then meet a Mage-friend of his who will also have a little look at the stone. That fit in your plans for the day?" The last was said without any poison in the words, just dry humour delivered with a stony expression.

"Maybe they can figure out what this thing even does. Or at least... they might know of ways to get Gici to talk." Nergui let that hang in the air for a few hearbeats, then adding casually. "I mean they might have somebody speakin' his language - if I wanted to make a man talk I would drag him to the House of the Free Mind. If that doesn't work we'll soon be carrying the guy over to the human quarter..." The prospect seemed not to be the Tsing Gouns favourite idea, and she gave Voitleja a thoughtful look. "I mean it's not like they would care too much... he's a stranger to this land... but some humans get weird ideas when they meet people from where they supposedly came a long time ago."

With the plan sorted the group slowly started to move in the direction of the Arcane towers. The edifice itself was visible above the roofs of the other surroundings buildings some of the times to all but Voitleja, but Tham knew the area well enough to find the tallest tower of the city quickly. After a minute or so of brooding Nergui fell back in like with Tham. "With all that from before said - you hang around with humans much? Might be we actually have to find some of his distant kin. Could get ugly."

VoitlejaThe Seene shook his head as he handed the stone back. He had made an assumption that had not be borne out, and he resolved to be more careful in the future. Especially when dealing with magic.

Once they had set out towards the tower, Voitleja walked a few paces ahead of the smaller pair, clearing a path through the crowd. Although it may have seemed he wasn't listening, his keen hearing could easily pick up on their conversation. The implication of Nergui's look and her concerns about the humans was not lost on the Seene, and his bottom right hand unconsciously found its way to rest on the handle of his baton.
