Dark Sun: The Emerald Sea

Dark Sun: The Emerald Sea

Attention: Deadline for submitting/completing applications is 10:00pm EST Saturday 5/1/21

"In Balic, we treasure our freedoms. You are free to speak as you will. Of course, Andropinis is also free to speak as he will, which might very well be an order for your execution. Choose your words with care, my friend."

- Darian, a Patrician of Balic

SettingAthas is a desert world. A red sun and two moons hang heavy in an emerald green sky. Once a fertile blue world its lifeforce was drained by wizards known as defilers. It is now a barren land of deserts and savannas. Cities are ruled by evil sorcerer-kings. Heroes who seek to make the world a better place are rare.
  • Metal: Metal is very rare. Materials, such as ceramic, are used as currency. Weapons are made from materials such as bone. Armor is constructed from the scales and shells of dead animals. Metal can sometimes be found in ancient dungeons.
  • Arcane Magic: It comes with a price. Casting arcane magic drains the life from nearby plants and animals. Arcane spellcasters are reviled and persecuted.
  • No Gods: The gods are gone. Such a wretched world was abandoned by its deities long ago. There are no clerics. But there are still druids who work with the spirits of the land.
  • Psionics: Psionics and psychic warriors are quite prevalent in Athas.

PlotBalic is a wealthy mercantile city-state on the shores of the Sea of Silt. It is under the control of Andropinis, a sorcerer-king who was elected to his throne over seven hundred years ago. Its population ranges from slaves and gladiators to merchants and patricians. Its water comes from extensive subterranean cisterns, as well as intermittent rainfall during the spring. During the dry season, the praetors enforce strict water rationing.

Each character served as a foot soldier in the army of Balic for a time. Finished with their terms the characters have turned to lives of adventure. The characters are brought into a quest to investigate the deaths of several silt sailors. Survivors claim that amorphous monsters with green eyes were responsible. Allegiances are tested and secrets are uncovered. But sometimes the secrets hidden by the sands of time should remain undiscovered...

I know that this will be a VERY unpopular character concept (in ANY world but particularly in Athas) but are Dread Necromancers allowed?

Most of the classes are available except for cleric. Paladins have been replaced with templars and sorcerers have been replaced with wilders.

As for psionic classes, there are psions and psychic warriors.

I would probably allow a dread necromancer. But you would be even more reviled than a wizard and would have to avoid drawing too much attention from the wrong people.

Glad to see interest in Dark Sun. I really enjoyed it in 2e. My biggest takeaway from the setting was the character tree concept.

Do arcane caster all function as defilers and pull energy from the land, or can they choose to be a preserver and not?

Application for Dark Sun: The Emerald Sea
Name: Prounounced “ferrin”Fearon Felstone

Race: Dwarf

Class: Fighter

Alignment: Lawful Neutral

Description: As with most of his race of people, Fearon the dwarf is hearty, muscular, and largely hairless. His muscles bulge from underneath his crude armor, his dark skin gleaming with small beads of sweat. He is seemingly tireless at whatever task he puts his mind to. And between his physical strength and indomitable force of will, he doesn’t stop until he has completed his goal – or left any unfortunate enough to try standing in his way lying broken and bloody.

Background: Fearon does not like to bring up the past. ”Let the past remain buried,” is his common refrain, but those who listen closely realize that this is being said more to himself than to any other. Everyone has a history; Fearon’s just happens to be littered with the bodies of his family, victims of just another brutal raid in a largely lawless world. Fearon himself was left for dead, his body hacked and slashed and left bleeding in the dirt. When the others had been slaughtered, their worldly goods raided and settlements burned to the ground, the bandits left, retreating to their camp somewhere to the south.

Dwarves are stubborn and thick, and Fearon’s wounds were not so severe as to be fatal. Having come back to consciousness in time for the cold desert night to chill him to the core, Fearon dragged his body toward the dying embers of what had once been his home. He covered himself in sand to insulate his body from the harsh winds and waited to die. Racked with fever, Fearon slept for three days with only his head exposed above ground. On the fourth day he awoke and knew what his purpose was. He was going to learn to fight, to kill, to slaughter. He would take revenge upon the bandits who had killed his family, but first, he needed to get strong. And he’d never get there by himself.

Fearon worked his way south, keeping dormant during the day, and moving when it was cool at night, using makeshift clothes laced together with a multitude of skins from small animals he’d killed with a bone club. Having been saved by the earth, it was to the earth that he prayed for guidance and strength. Eventually he rounded the small mountain ridge that had provided the Felstone family with shelter for generations and worked his way around to the east until he came to the road. Having no map, it was simply the road, and it was what he followed until he came upon a great city, which he would come to know as Balic. From there, he sought to prove himself by enlisting with the army of Balic. Here, he found a new family, a renewed sense of purpose, and most importantly, the martial skills necessary to help turn him into a killer.

Application
left-aligned image

Name: Ashwind Graycaller
Race: Human
Class: Dread Necromancer
Alignment: True Neutral

Description: On first glance, Ashwind looks as though somebody left a corpse to dry out in the desert winds and then wrapped it up in a heavy robe. A second glance reveals that the "body" is actually breathing and his eyes are blinking, albeit slowly. Beneath the robes is an emaciated figure, but stronger than it appears, with numerous scars from deep claw and bite marks that have obviously been made some time ago. His forehead bears a strange mark that, unlike the ones on his body, appears to be deliberately made, and seems to resemble a figure "8" that was scored by some kind of acid. Those few people who look at it with recognition, seem to judge it with a kind of grudging respect.

Background:
There has not been a time that the Giants have not been a pox on Balic in living memory, and given that "living memory" includes that of Andropinis, it's elected Tyrant, that is an incredibly long time. None of this would surprise Ashwind, as it was the Giants that killed and ate (if they were very, very lucky, then it would happen in that order) the people of his village when he was just shy of full manhood. The Giants had eaten the eldest first, then worked their way down the age categories, and leaving the "little morsels" till last. The Balic troops found and killed the Giants before they could finish their Grand Feast, but the village and all the adults were gone. The defenceless children were sold into slavery, Ashwind was lucky/old enough to be able to sign on with a merchant caravan, but made sure that the bones of his kith and kin (which the Giants spat out, possibly for later) were buried in the remains of their village.

Ashwind went about his various duties in the caravan diligently and without complaint, but also without enthusiasm. The Merchants and their assistants knew what he had been through, so they let him grieve as long as he did the work. Their route eventually took them South of Tyre, and in order to circumvent raiders known to inhabit the area, they skirted along the border of the Dead Lands. One morning the traders woke to find that Ashwind was nowhere to be found, but a set of footprints that could have been his led to and past the boarder. The traders shrugged and decided that "He wanted to be with his people after all", and all raised a drink to his memory that night, before never thinking of him again.

Many years later, an emaciated figure in ragged desert robes appeared out of the wastes at the gates of Balic. He claimed to have once lived in a now ruined settlement, but had travelled widely, now returning to meet his obligations to serve in the Balic Army. The Soldiers sneered at his frail appearance, but sent him off to join the other new recruits, while taking bets for how long he would last. Despite looking like he would lose a fight with a slight breeze, he turned out to be slightly more physically adept than that, not a powerhouse by any means, but he could shrug off light hits as though they were nothing, and the few times he suffered a serious injury, he was back on his feet in a matter of minutes, once he had regained consciousness of course. Eschewing most weapons, he would slap at real opponents with his hands, which caused real damage, and he was curiously eager to use this to assist the others in taking down Giants. One time, his group had been sent to clear out a cave that was full of Undead, Ashwind told the others to hide while he went in alone, then came back out an hour or so later, "herding" the dead out. They were shuffling around like they normally would and did not appear to be under his control, he was nudging them in the direction he wanted them to go but they did not seem to mind him at all. The shambling dead were guided to a known Giant-lair, where they attacked the Giants living there. The Giants were then attacked by another group of soldiers who had waited for an ideal opportunity. Rumours that Ashwind was a Wizard were dismissed after an investigation revealed that not only did he not have access to arcane writing, but he could not even read! His abilities were dismissed as being obscure mental powers. After his military service, Ashwindwent back to the ruins of his village, wherehe had built a small shack out of the debris, though he often came back to the city for supply runs.

You can choose to be a preserver, which means that you function as a normal, stock wizard. But you can also choose to defile, which grants you a +1 bonus to caster level, because you are empowering your magic with drained life force. But once you become a defiler it is very hard to find redemption (XP loss and a side quest).

Very interesting setting. I played DnD 3.5 a long time ago, but have the three basic rule books all ready on my bookshelf. How much do the rules of Dark Sun 3.5e differ from the "standard rules"?
