JackbyJackby's face didn't react, which was a good thing - she had not been expecting this much of everything on the first class train. Some of it was excusable, the little pocketknives weren't worrying, but there was enough to give her pause. After a moment, she beamed out a message to her team

[Significant number of potential hostiles. Old man in the back has a suitcase full of something Awakened. The young elf towards the front has a subdermal shotgun. Middle aged woman two rows behind him has almost as much chrome as Frost. The man right behind me has a submachine gun. About 25% of the other passengers have small pistols, blades or stun gloves.] Jackby thought about it for a moment, before sending another pulse of perception over the stowed luggage. If a firefight sprung out, she wanted to know if there would be any free, available weapons for her to steal. Better to use someone else's than to potentially have issues with her own bullets getting tracked.

She also began to try and pick up some of the weapons on the matrix, in case a fight broke out that didn't directly involve them. Best to brick a gun while looking inconspicuous than to jump into a fight they didn't need. But, with any luck, this would be a nice, pleasant, excitementless journey!

Frost
right-aligned image
Frost had a lot of chrome, most of which was designed to make her more effective in combat. Some of her 'ware, however, was designed for secondary functionality. These enhancements were designed to give a "soft" advantage, to improve the situation leading up to and surrounding the moments of activity. Her sleep regulator was one such bit of cyberware, and it had been implanted precisely for this kind of situation.

The three-hour deep sleep she'd received the night before, combined with the regulator, would assure that her senses remained rested, sharp, and alert, especially on a vehicle like a train. She could watch over the others while the rest of the train was being lulled to sleep by the steady, methodic motion of the train. Any street sam worth their weight had chrome to make them go faster, hit hard, take more punishment. It was the subtle edges, Frost had found, that often made the real difference. And with another runner group apparently on the same train, it was precisely the type of edge she might just need.

Frost alternated keeping an eye on the rest of the car, including the exits, with gazing outside the window. Though a small part of her still enjoyed the view as it slid by, it also served the purpose of watching for external threats. Aside from the suspicious nature of their current employment, the last thing Frost wanted to deal with was being taken unawares by a rogue group that had slotted too many wild west BTLs.

COBOLd[Bad news doesn't stop. Someone has near-full control over the sensitive parts on the train. They could stop it at any time, or worse, make it run off the tracks. Driver doesn't jump in either, so a remote rigger would have priority, even before they lock out controls.] COBOLd shifted in her seat slightly, slumping down to lean against the cool window, sinking into herself a little bit. Nestling down for a nap... eventually. Once she figured out this drek.

[Either the people we're taking a job from, which I find unlikely, or the train's a target. Maybe someone on the train. But trouble on the horizon. I can try to scrub them, keep us safer physically, but that might get us into a grisly cyberfight. And I'm not comfortable enough here for VR.] COBOLd was just stating facts, and wasn't particularly worried one way or another quite yet. Even some kind of robbery would not be the end of the world - worst case scenario, Jackby takes the weapons and legs it the rest of the way to Cali, while everyone else waits for the whole thing to blow over. Probably.

Halcyon
left-aligned image
Messages started coming in and it was a bit much for her contact lenses to keep up, or her brain. One of the two. So Halcyon pulled out her comm and looked at what the team sent as she tossed her head slightly back, the blonde curls bouncing happily at the movement, "We're at the front of the car. You'll see me join them in a moment. Yours?" She looked up pointedly and lowered her shades to look in the troll's eyes.

She listened to his olive branch and wondered exactly how much she should share about the predicament everyone on the train faced. In the end, she opted for most of it. The elf put her thigh against the panther's jaw and rubbed his head and ears. Slowly, dipping like a dowser's wand, she lowered her lips to the troll's ear to whisper, "In the spirit of friendship, I'd say you might want to rethink whatever you are planning. This car alone is filled with enough firepower to challenge us both much less the rest of the train, and we may have even bigger fish to fry." She looked down at Pantera, suddenly missing his human form and wishing he were standing next to her rather than prowling there. "Someone currently has control of this train and it is not us." Laying her hand on the large chest, she eased herself straight again, tapping her palm slowly and comfortingly against his suit. She cast her eyes around the car and settled them on the dwarf. "You might want to look into that. People like these get...twitchy."

Halcyon nodded to them and lead the way back to the front of the car where the team sat. She sat in her chair and looked over at Frost, "Hey, miss. Do you mind getting my bag down?" She nodded up to their duffel and then sent a message to the group. [Time to arm up, wouldn't you all say?] She turned the comm to Pantera so he could read the traffic he missed.

Frost glanced up at Hal when she approached, staring for a brief moment after being asked for the bag. After a second or two, she nodded, lifting from her seat to retrieve the cargo. She tugged it down effortlessly, and set it in her empty seat. "It might be heavy for you," she said to Hal with a slight glance. "Do you just want to get something out, and I'll wait to put it back up for you?"

[It's always time to arm up,] came the response message. The slightest hint of a grin might've been visible in the corner of Frost's lips, if one were looking, and perceptive.

Jackby prowled through the matrix icons she could find in the car. Most of the weapons weren't terribly well defended from electronic interference, the general device security. Others, did have the vaguest bit of protection, slaved through some commlinks for just a little bit more protection. No one seemed terribly ill at ease though, they were probably just used to traveling like this and used to getting away with it. Some people had their weapons on their person, others had them stowed in bags. None would be easy to grab in a single moment, either needing to lift them directly off their owners or dig them out of a bag.

As Frost settled back for her regulated sleep and the others took their seats, the train lurched and started to roll out. It pulled out slow, steel screeching as it turned out onto the mainline and crawled slowly out through downtown Seattle. They were underway.

COBOLd meanwhile further inspected the marks she could pick up, searching her foggy memories and checking against what information was hidden away on the Matrix. Finally, she arrived at a likely source. The Ghosts. These marks had probably been aboard since the train started running through the Tir. Maybe the elves were being a bit open. Didn't mean they were trusting.

Meanwhile Halcyon had the attention of their suited troll friend. He sat back with a bit of a toothy grin. "They'll be joining us shorty." he said half to himself. But he did bristle a little at her suggestion of a heavily armed train car. He cast his eyes around, giving everyone a second glance.

In the end, after a great deal of thought, he shrugged a little. "People like to travel heavy these days I guess." he said, almost sounding a bit like he was trying to reassure himself. "Don't worry, we aren't planning to make waves." He grinned, showing fangs. "But, if someone takes control of the train to interrupt our trip, we'll just have to take control back, won't we?"

He sat back, seemingly having convinced himself Halcyon's warning wasn't really that concerning. He casually pulled back a sleeve and checked his watch. "Just stay out of our way and we can talk more in San Fran."

As she got up, the troll glanced to his dwarf friend, gently nudging his arm. The dwarf glanced up and nodded. He got up, grabbing his case, and headed to the back of the car and one of the bathrooms.

COBOLdCOBOLd thought about it, sent out another message that it was the marks of a Tir GODsquad, affiliated with the Ghosts of all things, and decided it was best to leave that alone. After a moment, she put together another sprite to let it hover over her Silently, send a message to Frost, and began to really settle in for a nap. [If you guys need me for anything, just give me a bump. Scanners, hijackers, whatever.] She wasn't all too concerned, mostly just ready to sleep off some of this fading.

With that, she switched her mind over, letting the toll of the day weigh down on her, and got ready to catch some z's.

Halcyon

Halcyon looked up and smiled at Frost. The elf changed faces so often it was sometimes disconcerting to look at one person and know it was another. But Frost was a pro and nothing seemed to phase her. "That would be sweet of you, thank you. Just the backpack in there. The one that looks like it went through a jungle warzone." She stood and took the bag from frost and hoisted it over her shoulder. "You wouldn't believe how much you have to pay for authenticity like this." She winked and left the rest, heading in the same direction as the punk Dwarf, but a different restroom.

Once inside, she locked the door and touched up her makeup, resetting her disguise and shrugging into her concealed holster. She checked the Colt's magazine and slid it quietly back in place before holstering it and getting her jacket back over. She felt better. Not safer, she was already as safe as she could be with the team. It was more a feeling of being whole. Idly she poked around Pantera's clothing and his SMG. He was a strange one. But then, they all were in their own way. She zipped up the bag and flushed the toilet, washing her hands of the smell of gun oil. Exiting the restroom, she sauntered her way back to her seat and kept the backpack with her in case Pantera needed it. Halcyon settled in her seat and launched the Kung Fu trid on her comm and plopped on some over-sized headphones to listen and relax for a moment. She pointed it half way to Frost, so she could watch from her safe seat next to the comatose COBALd.

The troll and the dwarf seemed mostly just relieved as Halcyon left them without causing trouble. They sat by themselves for little more than a few minutes, quietly doing nothing in particular other than unconvincingly acting unassuming. Halcyon didn't have much trouble keeping an eye on them over the screen of her comm, barely diverting her attention from the trid. The others could keep an eye out too, aside from the ones taking a power nap in the plush first class reclining loungers.

And the train trundled on uneventfully. Until, the troll tugged a sleeve to check his fancy silver wristwatch, not a cheap item to have custom made, before nudging his dwarf friend.

He picked up his suitcase deck and slipped out by his large troll friend. Head down in his hood, the punk dwarf quietly made his way to one of the washrooms in the rear of the car.

The train rounded a corner slow. For a high speed train they were still crawling their way out through the suburbs of Seattle. They wouldn't be hitting full speed until they escaped the sprawl proper.

By the sight of the skyline out the right windows, it looked like they were just coming up on Tacoma. But slightly more interesting was the commuter train overtaking them on the left.

Far from the style and flash of the currently speed-limit hobbled highspeed's first class, the run down old intercity commuter train looked like the usual dinge and grime of Seattle's public transit.

The cars were that specific shade of dirty grey that could only be achieved by yellowing white plastic paneling in the sun. Inside, it was packed shoulder to shoulder with low end wageslaves riding home late from work downtown.

Their new well dressed troll friend was watching it very intently as it pulled alongside them, quite nearly matching their speed.

Frost

Frost was getting that familiar itch in the back of her head. Halycon's conversation with the other runners had already put her on edge, and now they were moving around in a coordinated action. Timed conveniently with the approach of the other train that they seemed so interested in, it spelled trouble to Frost.

Conveniently 'forgetting' to put her fellow guest's bag in the overhead compartment, not that anyone would give a drek what she was doing, she kept her back turned to the rest of the passengers to shield her actins and discreetly collected her heavy pistol and her knife. Both were contained in holsters designed to disguise their presence, and she slipped them in amongst her Mortimer of London greatcoat.

She watched the troll from her peripheral vision, pretending to be having trouble with the zipper on the bag. [The other runners just took up positions, and there's another train intercepting us. It may not be anything that concerns or affects us, but we should be ready, just in case.] she group-messaged to her team.

Halcyon

Halcyon watched her trid, occassionally glancing lazily up at a movement in the cabin. As the troll and dwarf went about doing what they said they would be doing, Frost's blast came across her screen. She sighed and paused the trid, unfolding her crossed legs from their perch in her plush chair and nudging the muscular panther at her feet. She reminded them. [They assured me their little operation was not going to delay our trip. Still they are going to mess with the lights so switch to thermal if you got it and watch these other juiced up runner types. They asked we don't interfere...a bit of good will for future relations.] She glanced over at Jackby while she showed the two communications to the nudged Pantera. Jackby had noted a particularly large gun was positioned directly behind her. Halcyon casually opened her coat, ready to quick draw her Colt. She, unfortunately, didn't have thermographic to switch to. She watched the train pull alongside the parallel track with detached interest.

COBOLdCOBOLd was less than thrilled right off the bat, as they had hardly been moving. It was hardly the restful nap she had been looking forward to. The resonance construct embedded in her body flipped back on, eyes not even opening as she took a moment to look around, to peer at the train adjacent to them to try and spot anything of note. [If you want, I can TAG whoever's got the guns? I've also got my stable of sprites at the ready. Two present, ready for a fight.] Well, ready for her kind of contributions to a fight - a sprite to Frost to aid her fighting, and another ready to shred whatever appeared on the matrix.

[Hopefully this is fast. I need my beauty sleep, but more importantly I need to sleep off this fade.] Not that it was bad, yet. The others had seen her at her limit before, where the moment she disengaged from the resonance in her body she collapsed. Hell, they'd seen her take a bullet and not notice, which always seemed to unsettle people not expecting it. Jackby understood at least.

The two trains matched speed, slowing down into a sharp corner. Everything ever so slightly shifted right as the car leaned against the turn. Hanging a hard left out through the outskirts of Auburn, the trains lurched back towards Tacoma following the tracks.

The heavy intercity highspeed hadn't been given a straightaway to speed up yet, and the light commuter train could have easily overtaken it through the tight corner if it wasn't for such things as speed limits. And then the two trains plunged suddenly into darkness.

The posh first-class car remained lit, lighting on day or night. The run-down old commuter train though went black, before finally some sensor clued in that it went dark and flickered the lights back on. The tracks ran into an old lean-to of a structure, a long tunnel of sheet metal and steel beams. Shelter from the outer ash banks of Puyallup. While it had only been built to keep the dusting ash off the tracks back when Rainier started erupting, now the whole structure was buried under the shifting dunes of fine grey powder.

None of the regulars seemed fussed. Some of the tourists were looking out the windows, like this was the closest they'd ever been to the barrens in their lives, behind reinforced glass, steel shelter works, and several dozen feet of silty ash.

COLBOLd easily tagged the other train. Now this was the tech she was more used to seeing. The whole thing was a single Matrix entity like any good drone should be, even slaving up the trailing cars to the one in the lead. Rather than the patchwork upgrades their own train had been through. It was autonomous, and quite frankly looked like a big juicy vulnerable target. The nearest Matrix equivalent to a cooling pie on a windowsill.

And then she spotted the interference from their friend the punk dwarf decker. He tossed out some marks on the other train. But true to their words with Halcyon, he only marked the cabin lighting for their car.

Then everything went dark again, both trains lights switched off like a single candle snuffed out. There were some collective gasps and murmurs of shock from the well-off travelers. Though some of the regular passengers only grumbled and adjusted down the brightness of their displays. The commuters in the other train probably thought nothing of the interruption, used to the lights flickering on and off. One woman started calling out for the steward.

In the murmur, there were two soft thumps against the roof of the car. Between the rattle of the train and the out loud musings of the other passengers, it was almost impossible to hear without first expecting it. Then there were two more thumps.

The lights remained out for only a few moments more, before suddenly coming back on. The car steward looked up from his fiddling about with a little control panel. "Ah!" he said with a happy smile, as though he'd actually done something. The woman who complained seemed satisfied enough and returned to her seat. The lights in the commuter train across the way took a moment more to flicker back on.

And then the dwarf returned from the washroom, head down and hood up, deck tucked tightly under an arm. He wandered back to join his troll friend. And it seemed the fuss was all over. The trains emerged from the ash shelter. The commuter train turned northwest to Tacoma, everyone onboard oblivious to the small part they抎 all played in the op and just relieved to almost be home after a long day. The highspeed turned south, aiming to hug the coast on its way across the boarder.

Perhaps a few minutes later, the door at the rear of the car slid open, opening onto the platforms between cars and under the connecting bellows. Behaving nonchalant, in walked the four folks Halcyon had spotted back in the ticket lobby in Seattle.

The man in the smart suit led, straightening one of his cuffs. It was difficult to tell if there was anything more threatening to him than his charming smile. Behind were the women and the other man. The orc was the most imposing, her armored jacket looked especially heavy and reinforced. The other two were more nondescript. Just a little too fit to be mistaken for your average wage slave, but dressed well enough to be mistaken for well to do travelers on their way to Sanfran.

While they played at being nothing more than travelers, they had a certain air of professionalism about them. A well-oiled machine. Everyone in step. Almost like this had all been rehearsed. They all leaned forward as the train lurched into acceleration. Finally they were clear of the sprawl and on their way proper down the coast. And they casually sauntered right up to the troll and the dwarf, taking the adjoining seats though not saying anything.

The troll was quick to his commlink, tapping out a message. Very casually and one at a time, the rest of their group checked theirs, save those who probably had a more direct way of being in on the conversation.

Then the man in the sharp suit glanced back. He scanned the car, eyes crossing all of them, before landing on Halcyon. His lips spread immediately into a charming grin. But he didn't come over right away, no. He waited for the steward to come by, ordered a drink, waited patiently for it to arrive, then wandered down the aisle of the car.

The hills of the Tir sped by outside, behind little more than a chain-link fence, strips of motion, touch, and vibration sensors, and cameras. There was even a drone tailing them. Eyes were on the train now.

The sharp dressed man leaned on the seat back of the chair beside Halcyon. Wonderful day to travel. Is this seat taken?"

Halcyon

Halcyon's open coat showed off more than just the butt of her pistol as she bent over to calmly caress Pantera as if soothing a wild cat's nerves. It would be a lie to say she didn't want the handsome runner to come over, but at the same time it wouldn't do to admit that to him at the moment. "A bit windy, if you ask me," she said as she straightened back into the luxury of her chair. She left little to pretend that it was a comment about the weather as she lowered her sunglasses and rolled her golden eyes to the roof of the car. To his question she flicked a finger in its direction for him to sit and raised her sunglasses again, but her words were less inviting, "Let's just say I'll let you know when the seat is no longer yours." She smiled, more of a smirk really, and looked back at the other three he boarded the train with. "What is it that you want to talk about, Mr. ...?"

Frost

Frost had the dufflebag of goodies by her feet, and herself seated, by the time the lights began playing havoc. Between thermal, low-light, and flare compensation, the manipulation of the lights in the car was barely more than a minor distraction.

She idly viewed her Transys Avalon, leaning at a bored slant that gave her a better view of the aisle than sitting straight. She scrolled and flipped through screens one-handed, the other arm cradled across her torso, fingertips inches from her concealed Predator as she tried to remain inconspicuous.
