Greetings Jataan.
Might I suggest getting a couple more posts on site so you can get out of "new user" status? This way when a DM goes to PM you for your game, you'll be able to reply right away. |

You're welcome. As of right now, looks like you have 5 posts. Your "yellow status" will change in an hour or so from now, and you'll be all set.

@Alyssin: No worries, I took care of the rolls you deleted. You've officially "shed that yellow" new member status.

Hello! I'm Neo, new to D&D altogether, but not really new to the site. I apparently lied when I said I had an amazingly active online schedule because...I never logged back in haha!
But I'm back and learning from Zeppo, so hopefully I'll be a pro in no time! My question is this: I don't have any of the core books or add-ons, my experience with D&D is limited to a fake game a friend of mine and I played when we were 8 and reading the DragonLance Chronicles (which I HIGHLY recommend). Are the core books necessary to playing the NPSG or should my DM have all this info for me like a menu at McDonald's? |

... I'm so very tempted to make a Matrix joke here. Just saying. Anyway. Welcome, Neo.
I would say your answer depends on the version of D&D, or generally, what tabletop game you're playing. If you're doing D&D 3.5 or Pathfinder, I would say the books are helpful to have, but not really required. The base information you need is on the sites I just linked, and having someone help you sort through it if you can't make heads or tails of it will go a long way. You can also check out this thread for systems that have freely available rules. I think 4e might be much easier to pick up if you have the books, since there isn't an SRD available. EDIT: Okay, I answered the question in more of a general sense than a "NPSG specific" sense because it is early and I misread the question. It looks like you're doing 4e to me, so Zeppo likely has you covered, or at least to the best of his ability, but I still imagine you might want to get the 4e books if you plan to stick with 4e (based on my experience with it; someone better versed might have a better answer).

Hmm. Alrighty, I'll look into getting the books for 3.5e because it seems so much simpler, but I'll probably need the 4e to complete NPSG, so I guess that'll be a bit. Buying an engagement ring *hopefully* next weekend.

If you'd like to switch to 3.5e, we can do that Neo. It's been a while, but I can run them. That, or one of our new DMs can take over your game.
