Combat reflexes perhaps... that's one of those hard ones to answer, because it depends on the fighting style you have, and the game the GM runs. If you run into a lot of mooks and crowds, it's much more valuable. If you fight a lot of solo bad guys, not as much. If YOUR style is to tackle the big guy head on, and let others handle the edges, not so much. You need multiple people in your combat space for that to shine.

Trip is another tough one, because some GM's hate it (they don't like seeing their Bad guys on the floor), others will start tossing trippers at you (what's good for the goose), and sometimes, there are just things you can't trip... or a lot of things. I would say this one isn't as important to have a combat reflexes (again, depending on the game style/most likely uses in combat).

Spell focus is typically a required feat tax for a lot of things, so grab it early so you have options. Spell Penetration is a pretty narrow one that often doesn't come online till mid levels (9, 10, etc), and so you can delay a tiny bit, if it's a path you are wanting.

CR and Trip will be more useful across broader encounters than Spell Penetration, of course, so... If your build can support it, I would probably delay the SP to get the others. But again... if you are really going for bad touch, then SP is thematic and better.... because you are doing SoS spells, and need them to hit. Trip is more of a generalist support build, to give you something to contribute when you can't SoS.

I need a way to be Large on command.

If a spell is on the domain or subdomain spell list, does it count as being on the list for Wands? I assume if it does it only counts if you actively have the domain that grants it.

After trying everything I could to work the Plant domain into this build, I gave up. I'm sitting with Finesse, Dodge to boost my AC, Initiative, Focus (Necro), Lunging Touch, Greater Focus, Penetration, Greater Penetration. My last three feats are in the air... I could probably use empower, quicken, and extend spells, huh? With this set up, I should be hitting first every time, hitting hard with a touch spell, and easily avoiding most blows that come my way.

I wouldn't bet the farm on the hitting first every time part, but the rest sounds solid.

Again, you have limited resources (feats) to use, and if someone else wanted to build a flash striker PC (or bad guy), a couple feats and some other choices, and they could have a much higher Initiative. There's no way to compete in the initiative arms race without going all in, though.

Alas, as you get into level 15 stuff and beyond, the game gets where initiative may not matter as much as prepped spells, celerity, timestops, etc..

In 3.5:

The Warning weapon property in MIC gives you a +5 Insight bonus to initiative. Get a +1 Eager Gauntlet and a +1 Warning Gauntlet and you're all set.

A Hummingbird familiar (Dragon 323) gives you +4 initiative, get it via Obtain Familiar (CA) if you wouldn't normally get one or if you trade the class feature for Abrupt Jaunt or similar.

The Elf Wizard 3 substitution level (RotW) doubles the bonus your familiar grants, so that +4 becomes +8 initiative. Also use Martial Wizard for Improved Initiative instead of Scribe Scroll.

Learn the spell Nerveskitter (SC) and cast it before combat for another +5 initiative.

Later on you can also use Moment of Prescience to give you up to +25 initiative.

There's a regional feat called Blooded (PGtF) that gives you +2 initiative, among other benefits.

The feat Quick Reconnoiter (CV) gives you +2 initiative, plus other benefits.

The Aggressive trait gives you +2 initiative

In Pathfinder:

Scorpion Familiar +2
Greensting Scorpion is +4

Elven Reflexes Trait +2 (Racial Trait)

Dusty Rose Ioun Stone (cracked) +1 Init (competence)

Play a divination wizard. Gain +1 to your initiative every 2 levels.

But again... if you want to be all things, you can't be the king of them all. You can be the flash, and have high initiative... or highest speeds. Or strongest, or best grappler... or even combine a couple of the two, and excel at them.

But you probably can't build to be the best at everything, and someone who does build for a peak thing is likely to always "beat" your build... simply because they devoted more of their limited resources to achieving it.

So... good initiative, debuffer, spell penetration, decent melee line holder... that's a solid build. You may not beat the specialist wizard at acting first, but you have other tricks up your sleeve, right?

Honestly, I just don't have any good gishes in my character archive. The last one I actually built was a duskblade Ur Priest. Magus looks super straight forward - go first, plan your spell buffs, make sure shocking grasp always hits (and hard), and carry a scimitar.
