Brixim
Forest Gnome Hermit Wizard

Character Sheet

Brixim looks up at the trio of elves after they finish speaking. For ones such as yourselves that have lived longer than all of us combined you must know of the runes we are seeking. Nyvorlas wielded one and we have found one other in our travels but we fear the enemy alliance including the monster races will gain the others before we can secure them. Do you have any insight on where the remaining runes may be hidden? For each rune we find, this tome I carry appears to illustrate its history but I fear it is not enough to help us on our quest

The lead elder regarded Brixim quizzically - seemingly unsure of what the gnome was speaking of. As his eyes lingered on the gnome; however, they eventually found his hand - glowing with the dull blue light emanating from Aquas. The elf's face went blank as he lost himself in thought. After a few moments of contemplation, he offered a reply.

I was but a child when we flew the city, and that was so long ago... but that sight jogs a memory - as translucent as it may be.

He scratched the white hair on his chin as he spoke.

The king had a golden gauntlet, lined with gemstones and intricate, ornate designs. It glowed blue, too, just like that. His daughter, Nyvorlas, had a matching one of silver that glowed green. I remember seeing them as they waved at adoring crowds in the streets from the balcony of their castle.

The elder elf titled his head slightly.

You called it a rune? And said she... wielded it? Forgive me, but I never knew it as more than regal finery.

He began to wave his hand dismissively at the notion, signaling he couldn't be of more help; however, stopped himself. He made to open his mouth, but closed it quickly again before speaking. The elf seemed to be weighing his words. When he opened again, those words finally escaped.

I remember... more such sights. When the dwarves of the North visited our city, not long before the king's death and the city's fateful collapse. Their king and his son wore similar adornments. The former was... red, I believe. And the latter... brown? Or, perhaps black. Apologies... as I said, it was so long ago.

As the elf relayed the colors, Brixim's mind suddenly flashed a vision - one he had before. From Downey's remembrance in the pirate cove.

The pirate let out a 'tut', but didn't overtly disagree with the sentiment. Thokk spoke next.

How many we have now?

The mage replied.

Two, including my Ignis.

And lifted up his hand to reveal a brightly shining red rune attached to the palm of his glove. Brixim immediately recognized it as the one from the De'Luca estate.

My brothers have Gravitas in safe keeping elsewhere.

The wizard slowly lifted a finger to his sinuses as the vision faded - a dull ache still lingering. He wasn't sure if that was a vision or a memory just now, but he was used to the line between them seeming ever blurry for the diviner. Not seemingly having noticed Brixim's 'episode', the elf continued.

What is this... enemy alliance you speak of? And why might they be collecting these baubles?

Amice the Huntress
right-aligned image
Amice was pleased to hear the half-compliment about her 'admirable' Elvish...less pleased to hear her accent pronounced 'rough', but merely bowed her head in acknowledgement. She relaxed a bit when the elves made their concession to the humans for water.

"I won't insult you by apologizing for the pain and damage humans have caused in the past," she said quietly, having gotten a taste of the racial hatred herself by being proclaimed 'elf-lover' by her own kind. "I can, however, promise that I will make it quite clear what fate will befall any foolish enough to trespass beyond where you allow." She just hoped nobody took it as a challenge, and decided to play hero.

She listened and watched carefully as the others contributed their knowledge of the runes, whether by relating a story or simply giving a visual. The history was fascinating, though a bit vague. She couldn't blame the elder for being vague, though, considering he was recalling information across centuries, or perhaps a millenia.

"The alliance," she spoke up again, "seems to be centered around a particular group, who count powerful mages amongst their membership. They wear cloaks that bear a particular symbol, and have apparently been working to ally with...or enslave...the hobgoblins and the orcs, that we know of, to do their bidding." She shrugged slightly, glancing at the others in the group before turning back to the elders. "We know for sure that they seek to collect the runes. For what specific purpose, we do not know in full, only that it is for no good purpose. They seek power, and will surely use that power for their own nefarious ends."

The elf's expression grew grim as Amice offered her appraisal of the 'alliance'.

Grave tidings, but rooted in sense. The hobgoblins to the North had plagued the ruins of Lenolith for a few decades now, but never in that time mustered enough force to do anything but hunt small game around its walls. Our scouts offering warnings of their rise in power and... tactics... has been a worrisome surprise for us. The orcs, too, to the South have been far more active of late - and organized. We have even had reports of an expedition of sorts that has pressed further west into the Wood than their people have ever dared before...

The elf to his right cleared his throat and the main one whom had been speaking turned to regard him. Once he was certain the floor had been ceded to him, the former spoke.

If I may...

He locked eyes with the group.

Haldir's recollection of the orcish expedition has jogged mine memory as well. Of a tome I once read, in our fair city's lore depository. It spoke of two other ancient elven cities in our Wood that sprang up around the time of the founding of Lenolith, but had long since passed from history before the latter fell. Both were deep into the sea of trees, near the water's edge of the ocean surrounding our land, but still tucked from sight by the green of the forest - one to the South and one to the West.

The elf paused a moment before continuing - seemingly leaving his own words time to process in the minds of both those around him and himself.

While I cannot say for certain what this 'alliance' may have in mind by sending resources deep into the westerly portion of the Wood, it seems to reason, logically, that their destination may be one of these other, long forgotten elven ruins - and their reasoning for going the same as it had been in Lenolith.

Having offered his say on the subject, the elf shifted back into his chair and went quiet once more.

After some awkward silence in which the elves presumed to give the party the floor, the leader, whom his compatriot had named Haldir, cleared his throat before breaking the stillness.

Well, then... it seems the audience has come to an end.

He paused a moment before continuing - weighing his words.

Before you go... I want there to be no doubt. You all did Galonodel a service in cleansing Lenolith and slaying Nyrvolas. It may not have been in my remaining life span, but I have no doubt that as long as she and her green beast drew breath that she harbored ill will towards our people.

The two elves at his flank nodded. Haldir continued.

That said... I cannot promise you that everyone within our city will feel the same way. Knowledge of what happened in Lenolith and the pain that stems from it is far outweighed by our people's struggles with humankind in the minds of younger generations. They were alive for the latter while the former is just a story of time past to them, after all.

He stopped again, contemplatively stroking his chin. There seemed to be a hint of regret in his eyes.

We wish you to enjoy hospitality in our city, but unfortunately cannot unilaterally promise it. That said, if you are ever overtly threatened within our city, you have open leave to return and seek audience with us on the matter.

With this, the elf smiled at the group. Sensing the end of the interaction, the group bid their individual farewells and headed back out of the room. As the climbed the steps back to the ground floor, one of the doors opened on the stairwell. Within the room, the group caught glimpse of a space beyond that looked more like a grove than a room.
Ivy clung to wall and ceiling and grass and flowers grew straight out of the wooden ground. Lining the walls, there was a veritable horde of herbs, potions and poultices.

Exiting the room was an elf garbed in shining golden armor with a bow and greatsword strapped to her back. Long red hair flowed down her back the entire length from head to rear. Between flowing hair on the sides, a long braid twisted with green reeds extended the same length. She backed out of the room backwards as she spoke in a muffle back towards the room to, presumably, someone remaining within. When the armored elf turned back around, hair shifting precariously as she twirled, she froze upon catching sight of the group.

Her shock quickly turned to a scowl; however, as her thin ruby red lips scrunched in anger. Her piercing green eyes, decorated above with purple eyeshadow were filled with obvious pain at the sight of the group. Wordlessly, she turned away and glided up the steps silently and gracefully - climbing past the ground level exit to ascend the trunk of the tree before dissapearing into the second door up the staircase.

The group stood dumfounded from the scene as they exchanged looks.

oocYou are right outsider the Council's chambers at the lowest level of the tree. Where would you like to go now?

Amice the Huntress
right-aligned image
Amice bowed to their elven hosts and left the room with the group. As they climbed the stairs toward the exit, she'd just begun to turn to discuss matters with the rest of the group, when they had their 'encounter' with the elf in golden armor. As the elf scowled at them with the fury of the gods, Amice kept her expression neutral. Probably suffered a personal loss at the hands of humans, she thought. It was also entirely possible that the elf was a cleric or paladin of some sort, and objected to the presence of a tiefling.

She held up her hand to halt the group long enough to give the scowling elf a good lead up the staircase, then trailed slowly behind. "It seems we get an early demonstration of those who will be less than hospitable," she whispered to her friends. "Don't let it get to you, but we should keep more or less to ourselves as much as possible. I think we should rest 'til the morning, and make plans. We can head out in the morning."

As they exited the tree, she glanced around. "I'm...going to try to locate some old friends of mine," she told the group. "Perhaps I can get a bit more information, and they might also speak a good word on our behalf." Plus, it had been quite awhile since she'd seen her old friends and mentors, and it would be good to catch up...if they were here, and she could locate them.

If none in the group objected, she would wish them all a brief farewell, and begin trying to seek out Elbereth.

As Amice and Hzrd discussed their plans, Nails abruptly chimed in.

I...

The rogue hesitated.

I've spent my life amongst humans - always the outcast. I always dreamed of a plaxe filled with my kind, but still I'm an outsider. I know what we are doing is important, but...

He exchanged a look with each of the group, individually.

I am going to stay, if my fellow elves will have me. They may not accept me at first, but I have a few centuries at least in me to convince them.

He offered a strained smile and then turned to descend the stairs back towards the Council's room.

Say hi to Maro for me if you cross paths. And... stay safe, everyone.

With this, the rogue disappeared down the stairs and into the Council's room. After a moment to process what happened, the rest returned to the present and Brixim, Hadrion and Quest made plans to meet back up with Amice and Hzrd later. The latter pair then ascended the stairs and exited the tree - leaving the former trio still on the steps spiralling up the inards of its trunk.

Amice and Hzrd
Once out in the air once more, Amice studied the area, trying to overlap the scene with the descriptions Elbereth had left in her mind's eye so long ago. After a few moments, the ranger decided which way to go and set off with the gladiator in tow.

As they walked through the grassy fields that acted as walkways for the elven city, the pair noted, conspicuously, that they saw no elves. They did; however, hear plenty of rustlings in the trees above them - though when they looked up they saw nothing but the wind. After roughly 15 minutes of strolling, Amice's ears perked up as she heard the tell-tale sound of arrows thudding into bark up ahead. She decided it was either a battle or a training yard - and either way was interested in seeing it. As they began to make their way towards the sound, they suddenly heard a voice from above and behind them.

Are you sure its prudent to rush blindly towards weapons being fired?

They both recognized the voice even though they couldn't see whom it came from. It was Aelar - the ranger that had escorted them to the city. Before they could reply a different voice - female - snickered playfully.

It seems all my lessons were for naught.

Amice's eyes instantly began to sting as she recognized Elbereth's voice. The pair then gracefully dropped down to the ground in an impressive display of acrobatics and faced Amice and Hzrd, smiling.

Amice smiled happily at the sight of the two. It had been a long time, by her human reckoning, since she'd last seen Elbereth, and she was not entirely sure that Aelar thought very highly of her or her friends. Seeing them both greet her and Hzrd drove away some of the shock and gloom she'd felt since Nails had so abruptly announced his departure. She'd been so stunned by his departure that she'd been unable to form any words to convince him otherwise. In truth, though she was sad to lose a friend's company, her heart was glad that he would be removed from danger, and perhaps able to find some measure of peace. Removed from danger, as long as we succeed in our mission, she reminded herself.

She smiled broadly at the two, and nodded to Elbereth. "Especially lessons of containing one's emotions," she grinned, and moved to give the elven woman a very human hug. Adding a friendly nod of greeting to Aelar, she gestured toward the hulking tabaxi. "This is Hzrd," she said by way of introduction. "As true a companion as ever was." Glancing at the two elves, she added, "He's been watching my back since before I even knew his name, to be honest."

Hzrd nods towards the two elves in welcome. "She is too kind. I am but her shield. She has saved my life more times than I can count." Hzrd winces a little from his memories of previous fights. Once he has given his greeting he takes a few steps back to allow Amice the opportunity to catch up with her friend but still be close by in case anything happened.

If he can see the archers practicing he would watch them as he remembers is own siblings practicing with Bows when he was young.

Amice and Hzrd
Elbereth seemed surprised at the embrace and held her hands out awkwardly for a moment as Amice gripped her tight. Eventually, a warm smile spread on her face and she gladly returned the hug - dipping her head down to rest on top of the shorter Amice. When they seperated, Hzrd thought he saw a shine in the corner of the elven huntress' eye. Elbereth nodded along at Amice's introduction and Hzrd's chiming in. Once complete, she flashed the same smile at the tabaxi as well.

A friend of Amice is a friend of mine. And if you are protecting her from harm than I owe you a debt as well.

She bowed low in the gladiator's direction before rising to address them both.

Well, then.

She cleared her throat after her voice cracked on the last syllable.

Aelar here was kind enough to fill me in a bit on what happened at the ruin. I assume things went well with the Council as well? I must admit... its hard to believe, but I suppose I should, of all people, know better than to underestimate you, Ammy.

She winked playfully at the ranger as she used the nickname from Amice's long past youth.

So... what are your plans now? Will you be staying in town long? You're welcome to stay with me as long as you like - and even longer than that if I get a say!

Brixim, Quest and Hadrion
With Nails bidding his farewell and Amice and Hzrd departing and promising to meet back up, the trio of magic users were left on the winding staircase inside the tree - not entirely sure what to do with themselves while they awaited their friends' return.

Almost serrendepitously, a slender, mature-looking female elf appeared in the doorway that the group earlier had seen the golden armored elf leaving. She had short black hair pulled back in a bun with streaks of silver falling down the sides of her face. She wore a robe much like the councilmen earlier. Her long fingers were adorned with two silver rings in each hand and the perceptive Quest noted her fingertips were stained a dull purple. She paused in the doorway to regard the group - her face scrunching tighter and tighter as each moment passed. Finally, she broke the silence.

You all...

She lifted a finger to point - almost accusingly.

I see a darkness in you all. From your past.

The long finger extended to Quest.

Present.

It hovered through the air to point at Hadrion.

And... future...

Lastly, it fell on Brixim and then dropped to the elf's side once more before coming up to rub her temples. She turned to return back to the sanctuary of her room, but stopped before disappearing to look at the dumbfounded trio once more.

Follow.

Without waiting for a response, she was gone.

A Bard Called Quest
left-aligned image
Quest listens to Nails' speech. Before he has an opportunity to respond, or even say a proper goodbye, the elf is gone. Perhaps he thought a protracted farewell would make his resolve falter. His pet mouse, hammer, peeks out of the rogue's cloak and gives a little squeak.

There is a moment of awkward silence. Finally, Quest says, "Can't say that I don't understand. I'd do the same if I were him. Heck, my whole life has been about finding my family, finding people like me. A quest, if you will." The bard smiles ruefully.

Where do they go now? They are in the middle of a strange city where they know no one, and are much more likely to encounter hate rather than acceptance anywhere they go. Not that it is an unfamiliar feeling for the tiefling. Nobody has told them anything about boarding arrangements. Do they intend to stay here? Where do they go from here anyway?

His thoughts are interrupted by an elderly elf woman with some cryptic messages for them. A herbalist? The purple stained fingertips would suggest so. Lavender? Rosemary blooms? Perhaps catmint. But she speaks like a fortune teller. The bard looks to his companions, shrugs his shoulders, then follows the woman into the herb garden of a room they glimpsed before.

Brixim
Forest Gnome Hermit Wizard

Character Sheet

Brixim's two halves warred; he was immensely curious about the magic that these elves obviously had but his years spent alone in the forest did not make him much of a conversationalist. Perhaps, fate intervened on his behalf as the older female elf and her cryptic words interrupted his internal argument. Looking at both his companions, Brixim shrugged and followed the woman into the darkness.
