Lamentation of the Underworld

Game NameLamentation of the Underworld
Game SystemDnD 5e
ThemeDungeon Delving and General Adventuring
FlavourHomebrew Fantasy
Plot Summary
Lamentation of the Underworld
The Setting
The world lives. Peoples rise and nations grow. Magic flares to life, daring the impossible. Technology advances, easing both existence and destruction.

The power of the Arcane flickers. Nations fall and peoples perish. When the gods grow bored watching the cycle of hope and folly they simply create a new world overtop, forsaking the last. A fresh start to their game of life... this is the third known iteration. The world as we know it is roughly a thousand years old. Nearly all of civilization still remains huddled near the location of creation, surrounded by vast and poorly explored wilderness.

Not for the first time, the magical barrier weakens. Created by the gods to pave over the old world and protect the new. Excavations and pits open through the solid earth exposing the remains of the former worlds to exploration and plunder. Entire economies sprung up around the idea of exploring those worlds and of retrieving the valuables therein. Delvers. The name given to those brave enough to risk the descent, though most delvers aren’t known to shy away from adventurer work, provided the coin is right. Slaying monsters, solving problems. Much safer than plunging the depths of worlds the gods have long since abandoned.

The Adventure begins in a small town named Jassi. It’s a quiet, unassuming town in the south, where salty lake water meets the Oaken Desert. Shallow man-made ponds checker the land: briny water brought in with the tide, dammed and evaporated to harvest salt. Earthen buildings rise several stories in neat rows, their height and tight proximity extends shade from the harsh sun to the streets below. Regularly scheduled caravans frequent the town, bringing trade goods and leaving laden with salt and colorful glass beads. Fishing boats squeeze into limited moorings, bringing with them the town’s staple foods. Unfortunately for the peace and quiet of Jassi, a recent earthquake opened a sinkhole in the nearby desert. An entrance to the dark worlds below, attracting a new type of person to town. Delvers, racing to plunder the depths.

Applications
  • Name
  • Race
  • Class
  • A few sentences of description, what would someone looking at your character see?
  • A short summary of background
  • Link to a character sheet
  • A character portrait

Character Creation
Level: 1st Level
Races & Classes: Any Published WoTC book and UA. Book published versions overrule any UA. No Mystic, sorry.
Stats: Point Buy - 27 points
Starting Equipment: Take the standard equipment for your Class & Background. In addition, you have scrounged an additional 25 GP to spend as you wish.
HP: Max HP at 1st level
Gaining A level: Leveling will be by milestone.

Other Information
  • I’m looking for a mechanically complete character sheet and a character portrait.
  • Every complete application will be accepted into the initial delve!
  • I will then choose 6 characters from the survivors for the long term game. The majority of them will be PHB races.
  • Encumbrance, rations, and arrow/torch counting will be ignored within reason. I’m here for a fun story, not to play quartermaster.
  • Expecting a 40:60 ratio of RP to combat
  • Post rate will be 2-3 per week.
  • One application per person.
  • Players should be familiar with the rules for 5e, and know their own character’s mechanics. If you don't own a PHB, you should at least have a copy of the free basic rules here or here.
  • Deadline for submission is September 20, or 20 complete submissions.

About the DM
  • I've been DM'ing D&D 5e since it came out
  • I've been playing on RPGX since 2006
  • I use Google Sheets for battle maps. Example If you can't load the example, this probably isn't the game for you.

For the purposes of the ageing houserule, does Warlock magic count as 'divinely granted'? I like the idea of eldritch beings having an extra incentive with which to tempt people.

Name: William Reinheart
right-aligned image

Race: Human (Variant)
Class: Paladin

Description:
William is a tall, broad shouldered man with a serious, focused expression on the battle field. A shield emblazoned with the symbol of his order is held at the ready in his left hand while a deadly warhammer is brandished menacingly in his right.

When he is not on the battlefield he has a much more relaxed air about him and is even known to crack a joke or two, but his warhammer is always at his hip and his shield strapped across his back should trouble arise.

Background:
William had just returning from three month emissary escort to a neighboring town when the King called him to the war room. It was odd at a time like this when relations were so good with their neighbors. After making his report to his commanding officer, the paladin hurried to the meeting with the king.

"As you may know, sink holes have been opening around the world. The latest one was near Jassi," the King said, pausing to let his words sink in. "I'm sending you to patrol the area and keep the peace. There has been a huge influx of people to cities near these sink holes lately and maintain order is paramount to ensuring the cities do not get destroyed. It'll also give you a chance to see your family."

The paladin nodded his understanding and replied, "Yes, your Majesty. I know they have some guards, but they will need reinforcements. I would like to take a small squad with me."

"You may," the king answered. "But I request you leave most of the seasoned soldiers here. Take a few initiates and a few soldiers. You can continue to train them during slow times."

"Yes, Excellence." William saluted, bowed and headed out to recruit his men. Home, he through, making his way to the barracks, It's been a while since I've visited. It had actually been nearly two years since his last visit, and if people were traveling to the area for this sink hole, he wondered how different things would really be.

Application
Name: Amari
Race: Elf
Class: Bard
Personality: Amari is a traveling bard and gets by through giving performances in taverns, or by making patrons loose a few coins while they enjoy their drinks. He tends to go after barmaids more than look for a fight.
Appearance: A middle aged Elf male, brown hair, blue eyes, wearing modest clothes, but also enjoys the more extravagant life style.
Background: Criminal background (pickpocket)
Personality Traits: I am always calm no matter the situation. I never raise my voice or let my emotions control me
I would rather make a new friend, than a new enemy.
Ideal:I steal from the wealthy so that I can help those in need
Bond: Someone I loved died because of a mistake I made in the past. It will not happen again.
Flaw:When I see something valuable, I can't think about anything but how to steal it.
Backstory: Amari travels from town to town spending most of his time in tavern earning enough to buy a meal and a drink. Never one to shy away from the barmaids, he is more than happy to use his charms to win their favor. If he feels his fiddling is going unappreciated, he is not afraid to lighten their coin purses. Before venturing out on this long journey, Amari had one love in his life, a human female named Pyper. Their love was forbidden and it ultimately got her killed. I have never let myself love since that day.

Hey Trapper! This sounds interesting and I'm thinking what type of character I might want to play in a game like that. Could you tell us about commonly worshiped deities? I'm sort of leaning towards a cleric, assuming I can find a god that inspires me.

Very cool concept! I’d welcome any feedback you have for me; I know goliaths aren’t one of the standard races, but I hope to make it into the final game anyway.

Stitch
right-aligned image

Name: Brixton Belknap Stitcher III (aka Stitch)

Race: Half-Elf (Drow Ancestry - See Sword Coast Adventurers Guide Pg. 116)

Class: Warlock (Patron = The Undying - See Sword Coast Adventurers Guide Pg. 139)

Description: Wearing a ragged trench coat and top hap, it would appear that the last name of "Stitcher" is either ironic, or fitting, depending on how you look at it. His clothing appears to be in tatters and has been "repaired" multiple times with patches of other clothes. The one piece of his clothing, however, that always appears to be in pristine condition is the red silk scarf he wears tucked into his tattered leather vest. Always with a smile on his face, a cigarette (or pipe) in his mouth, and a pep in his step, Stitch lights up any room he's in. Something about him, despite his haggard appearance, just comes off as likeable. Perhaps it's his ever-present 5 o'clock shadow or his silver tongue, warm smile, and soft eyes... Regardless of the reason, Stitch's outlook on "look on the bright side" is generally infectious to everyone around him.
For a half-elf, he has unusually dark/tan skin. This is, most likely, due to his Drow Ancestry. Standing at 5 feet, 9 inches tall, he projects a personality far larger than himself.

Background:

"Brighten up, Brixton... Brighten up!" His father's smile always had a sort of warmth to it. The lines around his eyes were etched deep from the near-constant smile he always wore. But, Brixton was old enough to know better.

He would catch his father looking at him when he thought Brixton didn't notice. His expression would soften ever-so-slightly into one of... Sadness. You see, Brixton's mother had died during childbirth and, according to his father, Brixton favored her appearance more than his own. The way that he would talk about her...

10 years later...

"Brighten up, Brixton..." He coughed and blood spewed forth from his mouth. "It's ok, son. I'm going to join your mother in the Undying Light of the Eternal Flame. But, it's up to you now..." He coughed again. "It's up to you to carry on. Protect the flame... No matter the cost..." His hand reached out to touch his son's face for the final time. "Brighten up, Brixton. Brighten... Up...." A single tear fell from Brixton's eye as he watched the life leave his father's body. He stood there for a long time, just staring at the corpse of the only person he'd ever known, bathed in the warm glow of their campfire...

Ever since that day, Stitch has lived his life for the thrill of life itself. He indulges with the underbelly of most civilized towns, and has been a constant companion and champion for the urchins and homeless wherever he finds them. He gives food, clothing, and shelter to beggars and urchins. He drinks with thieves and brutes. He sees people for who they have the potential to be, not for who they are. Always with a smile. Always looking on the bright side, no matter the situation.

At first glance, most "civilized" people would completely disregard Stitch (much to his delight). He prefers to associate with the vagrants, degenerates, downtrodden, and destitute. Going unnoticed by the bulk of society works entirely to his advantage given his family's line of "service". You see, Stitch's paternal line has been conscripted by The Undying Court to be the "Ageless Keepers of the Eternal Flame". Granted, the title itself is mostly ceremonial, the tenets of this service are quite real.

I would say that a warlock would use their patron's magic, thus be exempt. Should a warlock lose their patron for whatever reason, the spells would age the caster.

I'm working on getting information typed up in the game folder. As this is the first use of my homebrew world, I'm free to be dynamic with the lore and create canon as needed. If there's a god concept that interests you, PM me and we'll talk about it. The religion restriction is that gods are aligned by race, with one exception. The gods here are close to their people, a cleric, or religious-oath paladin, will likely have physically met their god.

The Thistle Witch
right-aligned image
Art by Barbara Rosiak
Name: Effemie Blackheart
Race: Human (Variant)
Class: Druid
Background: Folk Hero
Alignment: Chaotic Good

Personality: Though she has an air of shades and shadows about her, Effemie is a sensitive and affectionate young woman. Where she is unimpressed by worldly possessions, she is moved by the simple life of the common fisherman. Righteous, youthful and not of the most practical mind, Effemie refuses to abide the abuse of the helpless or the mistreatment of animals. Mercy does not interest her and neither does glory.

Description: Effemie smells like herbs and wet earth, and her wan skin betrays her Selhoff heritage - most of their lives were spent in the shade of the spirit-mist. Her diminutive height and sleight build make it easy to overlook her and she wears a hooded cloak of fine, dark plum thread that hides her youthful face. When her dark amber eyes catch the light in the dark of night they flash yellow like that of a predator.

Backstory:
  • Early Years
There is a tradition among the poorest of Selhoff. The port was a dark, quiet place, blanketed always by Nebelgast, spirit-mist, and plagued by geists and other spectral beings. It was said that the Weave runs thin here, the barrier that the gods had placed between this world and the next. The rich and powerful could shield themselves within their spires and towers of stone, but the powerless had to survive by other means. For some it was an unwavering faith in the gods themselves. For others it was the wyrd ways, the secret ways. And for those people of Selhoff, there was a tradition. When a young girl died before her fifth year, by drowning or disease, her body was to be taken to the woods and set in a circle of stones and left there before the rise of the next sun.

Most of the girls did not stir again and their bodies were never wasted, but utilized for other purposes. But those that did awake, those that survive the Binding, arose tied to the primordial spirits of the earth and the weave. Effemie was the youngest witch of the Mirror Wives and bound to a particular powerful spirit - the Morrighan, the Dark Wolfess herself.
  • Current
Effemie is the youngest of the Mirror Wives and the first to turn her back on the coven. The witches of the woods traded with both the forces of Light and Darkness, careful to stay neutral and far from the war between them. No one know what drove Effemie to leave her woods and her coven- some guess it was a broken heart. Others, a terrible vision of encroaching darkness shown to her on the night of the new moon by the Morrighan.

She has earned herself the nickname 'The Thistle Witch' among the common folk and a small reputation as a hunter of darkness. The omens have been getting more urgent and her path has lead her to a small town named Jassi. She arrived with a kind merchant who regularly plied the route and stayed, haunting the local taverns in wait for portents.

Race Human {Variant}

Class Artificer {Archivist}

Alignment True Neutral / MezohNeutral Evil

Description Cazi seems like a slightly shorter than average human woman, with her slightly paled skin and baggy green eyes, due to a lack of sleep from Mezoh keeping her up at night. Cazi tend's to dress in different styles of clothing, depending on what she is feeling like wearing that day, though she always carries her tools pouch around her waist so she always has quick and easy access to them. She isn't known to smile very often, unless 'Mezoh' is in control, which rarely happens. Her finger tips have old singe marks on them from her crafting, which she doesn't seem bothered by.

Does the “spell aging” include cantrips or just spells with actual levels? I ask because races with inherent spellcasting like a lot of elves would mean they age really fast.

Do rituals incur the same amount of aging? Is it possible to shift the effects of aging onto a willing (or not willing if helpless) person?

I'd like to reiterate that this is flavor only and will have no mechanical effect. Yes, cantrips and rituals would be included. For rough scaling, rituals would cost less time.

Ritual 3 minutes
Cantrip 5 minutes
1st level 10 minutes
etc...

Is it possible to shift the effects of aging onto a willing (or not willing if helpless) person?

Yes, though it would be extremely uncommon. Not something a 1st level magic user would know and would generally be considered an evil act.

Seeker
Name: Seeker
Race: Warforged (Envoy)
Class: UA Artificer (Gunsmith) link: https://media.wizards.com/2016/dnd/d...r_20170109.pdf
Description: Overall, he is very thin and seem’s so have been built to resemble an upstanding Noble. Seeker’s outfit is somewhat deceptive as it is metal that is made to look like a merchant’s suit. A white button up long sleeve shirt is covered by a black dovetail blazer. His gray slacks are long and the shoes are black and white wingtips. His head, neck, and joints are all visibly bronze. His white gloved hands are always seen carrying a long bronze rifle covered in magical runes over his shoulder. The whole outfit is topped off with a brimmed black hat. His right eye is bigger than his left giving the illusion of him wearing a monocle.
Background: (Guild Artisan: Explorer’s Academy) - Seeker was found by a member of the Explorer’s Academy merchant guild in an underground ruin during a delve into its depths. He activated upon exposure to the sun. His memories were gone and his form was plain and skeletal while gripping tightly to his thunder cannon. The Academy crafted his new exterior to be more pleasing to the eye and gave him a purpose. He was to be the new Delver for them. Not having to eat, sleep, or breathe was ideal for long term excursions underground. He found himself capable of using many different types of tools to investigate ruins and create maps for other Delvers and the Academy to use for future expeditions.

While he contributed much to the Academy, there was one thing he greatly desired and why he was called Seeker. The Warforged longed to find more of his kind. Was he the only one in existence or was the an entire civilization of them once upon a time? The answers would not be found above ground, but rather underneath it. The sudden appearance of a sinkhole in Jassi gave him hope, and he set out immediately to go explore it.

What about the playtest mystic? I would want to play one, but if you don't want one in your campaign, I would be something else instead.
