Tyron Thrae
Details
right-aligned image

Name: Tyron Thrae
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Job/Background: Forester/Hunter
Personality: For a man that goes out into the forests as a living and spends days at a time hunting and away from civilization, Tyron is a very sociable individual, always willing to spark up conversation and be friendly with anyone and everyone he meets. He likes to make friends wherever he goes and always enjoys being around others whenever he's in a settlement. His reasoning behind this is since he's constantly going into the forest and woods to hunt, leaving him with his own thoughts most of the time, he wants to counteract that with human interaction as much as possible whenever he's back in town.

He's a man that likes to look at the brighter side of things as well. Whenever anything goes wrong he always tries to put a positive twist upon it. The world is hard enough as it is, and he doesn't want to burden himself any further with worries and troubles that he cannot fix. If he can, he will, and if he can't he shrugs it off and focuses on what he can fix and changes it. He attributes this quality to his time in the wilds as a teen, where he had to fend for himself or die, and so looks at the world in, what others might say, a strange sort of way.

Flaws: As much as he likes to be a part of society when he's out of the woods, it doesn't do much against his tactless nature. He speaks openly on what's in his mind without regard to other's feelings or with any sort of discrepancy, and can sometimes get confused when others get frustrated with him for this. He's beginning to understand why and is taking efforts to try and mitigate and control what he blurts out, but it's a difficult process, and he finds himself doing it more often than not.

He can also be a bit over-critical when it comes to others, especially when it comes to those he considers particularly close. If he thinks they can do better, he will say it outright instead of congratulating them on their efforts, believing that he is doing them a service and helping them out in the long term. He wouldn't have survived his teens had he not been overly critical of his own skills, and thus he uses the same logic on others. They cannot reach their full potential unless someone tells them the truth. This is however blunted by his optimistic nature, and he he tends to give roundabout compliments in convoluted ways.

Fears: Because of his over-critical nature, he fears the day that he won't live up to his own standards. But most of all, he fears being abandoned by those closest to him, and although he isn't clingy by any stretch of the imagination, it is a fear that he worries might happen in the future as it had in the past.

Background
Tyron was born as the fifth child to a family in a small farming village several leagues from the nearest walled city. He has fond memories of his youth: times when he would play with his older siblings and his father; playing pranks on his mother and watching her freak out as he ran away, shrilling with laughter as she chased him around their large house. Life was simple back then, and he wishes he could go back to simpler times or at least change the way things turned out.

He remembers his father taking him out on a ride, far away from their farming village and he curses himself constantly for not paying attention to where they were going. Hunting his father said. He'd teach him how to be a man. And all the while, in the back of that waggon, Tyron was humming to himself, his mind far away on some grand, fanciful adventure. They stopped at mid-afternoon and his father sat him down on a thick log and told him he'd be back with his brothers shortly and rode off.

Tryon remembers waiting for hours, his feet kicking in the air as he hummed to himself, excited at the prospect of finally getting to hunt with his brothers and father. They'd gone in the past and he'd always asked to go with them, and today was finally that day.

But nightfall came and strange sounds were closing on his position. Tryon started getting nervous. His father would undoubtedly return.

He never did.

And for those years, as a child, he had to fend for himself. And against all odds he managed to survive. Barely. By the time he figured out how to shoot an arrow he was dangerously emaciated, his belly bulging outward on a dangerously skinny frame. Berries and leaves were a last resort until finally he managed to figure out, by sheer luck almost, how to make a crude bow. Not very effective, but it got the job done.

Tryon wonders often how he had not become completely feral during that time. Perhaps he had, and perhaps his mind simply blocked it all out to spare him the horror of what he had to stoop to in order to survive.

Things changed when he met Aubrie, almost by chance as she was wondering the woods close to her home. He was hunting for food, a rabbit he had seen scurrying away when he caught her eyes. She told him, years later, the fear she felt when he looked at her hungrily - not in a lecherous way - but as a predator looks at its next meal.

Much of what happened after was a blur, but Audrie tells him that she and her family managed to take him in and nurse him back to health. His memories after that moment return in flashes: of her father teaching him how to properly use a bow instead of the crude way he'd taught himself, of him constantly marking trees whenever he and Audrie's father went hunting together, and finally the day of their marriage.

They stayed with her family for several months, but soon decided to make a living of their own and sought out a nearby settlement.

Town Questions
What would you provide as a member of the town?
Game, constant meat for the butcher, protection by keeping predatory animals at bay.

What would you want to see provided to the town?
Some form of protection (guards, walls) and an established leadership to guide the town.

Spouse/Partner
right-aligned image

Name: Aubrie Thrae
Race: Human
Gender: Female
Job/Background: Wizard's Apprentice
Personality: If there was one word to describe Aubrie it would be ambitious. She knows her station in life and knows that nobility will never reach her, but that doesn't mean that she can't try. And an ambitious person is made far more dangerous when they're intelligent, and Aubrie is incredibly so. What she cannot achieve through her blood, she realizes she can achieve through raw power, and so learns the arcane arts studiously, absorbing every bit of knowledge she gets so that she may attain the most amount of power possible. And with that power giving her children a future that is more than mere peasants.

The ambition and cunning of Aubrie is counterbalanced with her warmth. She genuinely cares for others and understands that power is meaningless if trust and respect aren't there to go along with it. And although she's only a wizard's apprentice, she tries to benefit the settlement as much as she can with what she's learned any way she can. When she's not studying, she can often be seen speaking with her friends or asking about the situation of others in the town and ways she can help make their lives easier or better, cataloging everything in a small journal that she can get to when she has more influence over the town.

Flaws: Despite her warmth, Aubrie can be quite the petty individual. Every slight thrown her way she will take one step further and will not budge until the other party apologizes, even if she was originally at fault. She is incredibly stubborn with this and even if she knows she's in the wrong, will outright refuse to admit it, going along with the narrative that she was wholly innocent until the other party relents. And although she's secure enough in herself not to see vague insults every which way, whenever she does recognize a slight against her person by another, she will go out of her way to bring as much trouble and inconvenience to that individual as possible.

Fears: She fears giving birth to children and leaving them a barren future instead of one that is filled with prosperity and opportunity.

Hm! Interesting idea for a game. I see the wizard's apprentice background is vacant as well.

How do these NPC classes work now? Are they from a book?

They're from a website that I found that does 0-level NPCs. It's kind of a mis-matched leveling system. The website's original concept was that they would level into normal character levels from the 5e system, but instead I'm giving more bonuses to start with, and leveling up differently. You don't get additional class options, but more tool proficiencies, more skills, more feats, etc. I'm also allowing homebrew.

I just need character concepts, the rest I can help you do

Hurray! My game load has dwindled since the other recruitment posts for this game. Definitely interested this time around. Working something up ...

ApplicationName: Bukhurn "Buk" Bittermantle, aka “The Master of Manure”

Race: Dwarf
Gender: Male
Job/Background: Dung Carter/Sanitation worker

Personality: Fairly reserved most of the time, Buk has been scolded often about his lingering stench so he gives people that repeatedly bring it up a wide berth. Enough psychological damage has been done that his current default is to live a slightly hermetic existence although what he really wants is to belong and rise above his servile past. To anyone willing to get past his profession, Buk is fairly gregarious and is a staunch and loyal friend. Or, at least, he thinks he would be if anyone ever got past the stench. Even though he stinks to high heaven, he can be expected to appear at all town events. Unfortunately for everyone else, he is fairly intelligent and a very hard worker so it is not always beneficial to exclude him.

Flaws: Filthy at all times. The only times he washes is when he empties the town cistern. Animal dung is one thing...
Fears: Baths… (just kidding). Ending up back at the bottom of the social ladder. And bears.

Background: Buk grew up oppressed and used by the aristocracy. His family was locked in servitude to a cruel lord. Fear held them in thrall. Fear for what he would do to the others' in the family should any one of them get out of line. Buk was forced into humiliating and horrid jobs, primarily revolving around clearing feces. One day, an accident in the mine where many of his kindred worked left Buk without any immediate family. It had been Kezda's idea to escape. At the time Buk had only thought of her as a friend; he had been oblivious to her feelings for him. The time they have spent in the wild together has forged a much stronger bond, and Buk is finally understanding why she encouraged him to escape and then came with him ...

What would you provide as a member of the town? Sanitation. Animal dung? Turn that into fertilizer or dry it and create bricks for fire or buildings. Resident dung? Yep, that can be dealt with too … just don’t ask what happens to it …
What would you want to see provided to the town? Animals and crops where the fertilizer can be used most effectively

Spouse/PartnerName: Kezda Goldarm

Race: Dwarf
Gender: Female
Job/Background: Merchant (really just a merchant's daughter, but she picked up a few things)

Personality: Extremely stubborn and strongwilled. She is very much Buk's rock. The abuse from his former master has taken a toll, but Kezda is now always present to remind him of his value.

Flaws: Nave. Kezda has no real-world experience until the last few months. She lived a moderately pampered life and is just trying to figure out how to survive outside the clutches of her high society.
Fears:

Application StatusReady for consideration

Name: Milo Goodbarrel
right-aligned image

Race: Halfling

Gender: Male

Job/Background: Farmer/Carpenter

Personality: Milo tries to remain positive, even when times are hard. He does his best to spread this positive attitude. It's not that he's in denial of the current nature of things... He simply doesn't see how things will ever get better if all anyone does is to get angry or sad.

Flaws: Sometimes his efforts to appear optimistic lead to him lying to friends and family about how he is really feeling. He doesn't want to share it but he often feels that he's carrying more weight than he can bear on his shoulders.

Fears: Aside from what he considers to be natural/reasonable fears (Orcs, Ogre's, Goliath's, or any other giant angry humanoids); Milo constantly worries that he won't be able to meet expectations and/or needs of others.

Background: Milo grew up in a rather upbeat Halfling village, near a human town that they often did business with. He can't quite remember when he started but he was always told that he began working the land the day he learned to walk. Although he always dreamed of exploring far away lands, he never actually believed that he would or could leave his home. However, as the land grew more and more barren, he was forced to move on. Milo knew that this was no place to raise a family and that if he and his young wife were going to make it than they would have to pack up and start over somewhere new.

What would you provide as a member of the town? Providing renewable food sources (crops, eggs, and occasional animals to the butcher). He also knows his way around carpentry tools. This makes him very handy for building and repairing wooden structures.

What would you want to see provided to the town?: Some sort of social hall, a market, and basic defenses (walls and roaming guards).
----------------------------------------------------------------
Spouse/Partner
Name: Bree Goodbarell
right-aligned image

Race: Halfling

Gender: Female

Job/Background: Farmer/Healer (Animals and Humanoids)

Personality: Bree has a big heart. She's far more shy than her husband Milo but she is every bit as kind hearted. She has always been drawn to help others.

Flaws: Her compassion will not allow her to bring harm to others (people or animals) unless she is absolutely forced to.

Fears: Given that she's been forced to leave the home that she's always known (and assumed that she always would), basically everything has her nervous. Ironically, she is able to set all of that aside when she is helping to bring healing to something or someone. Although she has heard of others being able to "magically heal" others, she has always had to do things the "old fashioned way."

App - WIP

Name: Gavin Shisaro
Race: Half-elf
Gender: Male
Job/Background: Doctor/Surgeon (rumored to be a witch doctor)
Personality: Cordial and sympathetic, often soft-spoken and can be flustered in most social situations outside of his chosen career.
Flaws: Gavin can be hyperfocused on his work, and keeps to himself due to his shyness.
Fears: Letting people down. Not doing his best.
Background: WIP

What would you provide as a member of the town?
Health and vitality. People shouldnt neglect their health and well being, and for any community to thrive, someone needs to fight the good fight against sickness and injury.

What would you want to see provided to the town?
Safety, long life, healthy children, a general thriving population safe from disease.

Spouse/Partner: Perpetually single. Though, he is hopeful someday hell find the right one.

For some reason, Buk makes me think of Robin the Dung-gatherer. If Lord Percy Percy doesn't show up, I'll be very disappointed,

Picture

Name: Whisper
Race: Changeling (from D&D Beyond) (appears as human female)
Gender: Female (usually)
Job/Background: Clerk and Scribe / Wizard's Apprentice
Personality: Warm and gracious, kind...or calculating, shrewd, secretive
Flaws: Can be overly cautious, reluctant to take action unless sure of results
Fears: Being forced to leave the community
Background:
This is Whisper's second chance. She was born and raised among a primarily-human settlement some ways off. Her parents introduced her to her more unusual gifts when quite young, and constantly hammered home the lesson that she needed to pick a face and stick with it. Don't let anyone know she can change. Other people wouldn't understand. She got a long way before breaking that taboo. Maybe almost far enough. Love made her sloppy though. To this day she's not sure if had been wrong about him and his feelings...or if her true nature was just that bad...but when he found out, he was visibly affected and left her alone, saying he needed some time. A little while later, guards came for her. She eluded them and ran home, only to find it already empty. Whisper had no idea if her family had been taken, or if they'd fled...but she knew she was out of time.

Taking the place of a caravan worker (whom she'd found passed-out in a tavern), Whisper left her home. One of the other travelers seemed to see through her though...a man of aged features and piercing eyes. Fascinated by her, he struck a deal. He would keep her secret and even teach her...and in return she would use her abilities on his behalf, and perhaps even allow the odd experiment to determine their nature and function.

Over time, Whisper realized the old man was perhaps not so far from her, fleeing a past he wouldn't speak of save that it was 'full of mistakes.' He had his eyes set on a new life in a quiet corner of the world, far from prying eyes. It didn't sound bad to her at all.

It's her second chance. She doesn't expect a third.

What would you provide as a member of the town?
An organized mind, studious, meticulous, to keep track of agreements, arrangements and record them faithfully. A talent for planning and the consideration of future concerns. A certain talent for...underhandedness that could benefit a community that was either ignorant...or willing to look the other way.

What would you want to see provided to the town?
Security. Prosperity. Justice. Fair dealings, fairly adhered to. Foreknowledge of dangers and threats. Information to give it, and it's people, advantages in any conflict that might arise.

Spouse/Partner: None. Whisper will not lightly open her heart again.

Since there are two people who are "single" I'm going to accept Roekahs, Treble83, Odyssey and SalmonMax and consider it just 1 over my original want, why? Cause I'm the DM that's why.

The only thing I ask is Treble, can you alter your healer a bit to make it less healer-y and more related to another field? Even just animal related is fine, you can easily do something along the lines of making things out of animal products (making cheese, soap, candles, etc). Also, we might not need more carpenters, does anything else seem interesting to you?

Welcome aboard! I can help each of you build your characters because it's a homebrew make. Remember the main goal is to be useful for the town, so don't think of your character as a adventure, think of them as an NPC and how that NPC is going to do on a day to day basis that will be beneficial to the city as a whole. Homebrew is allowed with approval.
