A look of revulsion seemed to flicker across Coin's face as the fate of the creature was being discussed with it looking on. Even if it harboured ill intent towards them - Coin had no doubt about that - it still felt wrong to so approach its execution so dismissively.

He threw a scowl in the direction of the mage.
"And I suppose you want to do it, seeing as you are so eager then?"

He scoffs at those words "Don't think for a minute that I find this pleasing, but I do intend to survive this place." he takes a step back, his hands behind his back "Having said that I am the least capable of execution, merely for the fact that I am clumsy at best with a sword. Sure, I could summon a beast to do the deed or conjure darts of acid that would slowly eat it up, but that would be torture, now wouldn't it?"

It's a desperate thing, hearing four unknown beings discuss whether to kill you, and then, once the only voice of reason has been overruled, how to kill you.

This is the fate of Dr. Latchke.

Her eyes grow more and more terrified once Coin begins to lose ground, once Juniper gives her argument and once Victoria and Samaris repeat their support for the execution of this thing. With two blades to her throat, Latchke begins to slowly move back from the blades, as far as she can, and changes once more, into the form they saw when they first approached her.

"If I'm going to die, at least let me die on my feet."

It seems an honest plea, and then, it isn't: she leaps up, preparing to strike Victoria, Juniper, and most importantly, Samaris, who seems to take a kind of abject joy at all of this.

Coin is the first to strike, driving his blade into her side. She growls, but the wound is only so deep. And there is the matter of the blades at her neck.

This is suicide.

Before Victoria had the chance to make up her mind whether or not she truly had it in her to execute this creature, it made things a lot easier for her by taking the initiative. Her immediate reaction to the shapechanger making its move was off the mark, if only slightly. Maybe it was due to the creature jerking aside as a result to Coin’s sword finding it’s mark. Maybe it was just her own surprise. It didn’t really matter, for the instinctive second slash towards the changeling’s neck was much better aimed.

A simple cut, a spray of blood and a the being’s life ended amidst the remains of its brethren. True satisfaction remained elusive, however. Sure, they had protected themselves now and for the future, but it would all be so much better if they could just remember what had happened prior to waking up in the cells below. In any case, it was done. "Going back to the barricade will remain an option, but I would much rather look for this Oathsday!" she stated, turning away from the dead creature.

Coin sighed as he crouched down next to the dead shapeshifter. Placing the rapier on the ground he then fished out a piece of cloth and did his best to wipe the blood off the blade.

"The reason we did this was to make friends with whoever's manning the barricade. We might as well see it done now. Besides, there was talk of other things roaming out here. Cannibals and monsters. I think a bit of extra intel would do us good prior to hunting down this Oathsday character."

He nodded at the various bodies around the room.
"We have enough of those bodies to pay the blood price they demand for entry. Lets put ourselves on the other side of those barricades, discuss with whoever's defending them and then decide on our next course of action from there."

Samaris is quick to dance away as the violence takes place, but when it's done his smile is almost smug, almost. At least he tries to contain it, whatever good it does "Inevitable, perhaps." he listens to Coin and nods "Yes, the more we know and all that. I'd like nothing more than to be rid of this place, but I don't think it'll be that easy. So perhaps we best do what needs done, mmmh?" He seems strangely pleased with how things turned out and takes up position by the door, waiting for someone else to deal with the bodies of the shapeshifters.

Juniper nods. "Well, now for the messy part, hm?" She eyes the unwillingness of Samaris to do his part of the work, and then shakes her head before getting down to it. She, Coin, and Victoria all decapitate one of the shapeshifter bodies, the silvery-slime-covered skin, almost all of them caked with dust and rubble, makes the alien visages more severe, especially once the dark blood drains from their skin. It is messy work, and the varying levels of decay in each of them makes the job easier or harder. For good effort, they decide to take the fourth, leaving no shapeshifter head left.

And then, they head back down the corridor.

The barricade quickly reforms its defenses, though with less fanfare than last time. "Holy—they actually did it! Grand bastards! I'll be damned, where's York? York! You gotta see this, they—" The woman, enthusiastic, is shoved out of the way as the older man who negotiated with them beforehand's tired eyes appear again. "I'll be... Well, a promise is a promise, and you lot... gods, what a bloody business." He looks, and whispers something. "I'm gonna have them open the doors. You lot put the heads down in front of you, where I can see them, and keep her hands where I can see them, no weapons drawn, hear? We'll open the door, give you a once-over to make sure you're not spies, but you keep everything you got. Once you're through and you've got Winter's approval, it's for the duration. But we need to make sure you're safe, and won't do Winter no harm. You understand, right?"

Juniper sighs, sheathing her sword and putting down her head. "Certainly, yes, we approve that subjecting ourselves to be weaponless to strangers we're not sure we trust yet is perfectly reasonable." Keeping her hands by her side, she looks to the others. "Right?" She is technically complying, if not happy about it. The tired eyes on the other side of the barricade don't protest her sarcasm.

The door opens after everyone complies. The two guards are surprisingly spry, one a gray-haired Human woman in her mid-fifties dressed in armor atop what are clearly asylum patient garb, the other a tall, dark, and handsome Garundi man with a wry smile, dressed in the same clothes Latchke was: he is not a patient, but a genuine doctor here. Both carry swords that have seen better days and leather armor that might pass as a fashionable vest somewhere else. Just not here.

"Come on, then," says the woman, her eyes wide and almost unblinking. The man sighs. "Patient, Foulkes, they just got here. How are you all doing?" Though both have their blades out, the man smiles.

That is, if they comply.

While she agreed that it had to be done, Victoria was somewhat annoyed at Samaris’ attempt to keep out of the dirty work. Pretty much as soon as the first of the heads has been severed she turned towards the spellcaster and tossed the bloody trophy his way together with a curt call to catch his attention. "You’re part of this, too," she told him afterward, before turning back to the grisly work of getting the remaining heads.

At least they soon proved to be worth it, as the people manning the barricade appear to be ready to honor their side of the deal. Victoria raised an eyebrow at the whole weapons sheathed, being searched routine, but they were already at the mercy of the crossbows and as far as she thought there was no need for the defenders to open any door if they wanted to do the four of them any harm. "Sounds less like weaponless and more like not having them out in the open to me," she answered Juniper. "I don’t see the issue with that." Especially since weapons were drawn again right quick, if need be.

"We are alive and not in a prison cell. So, all things considered, reasonably well, I’d say." And on top of that, it at least appeared as if they had now found some folks who would hopefully prove willing to share information with them. Information that hopefully wouldn’t come in the form of riddles.

Samaris looks at the head with a bored impression "Hmm, yes it seems I am." he says, looking for some cloth or similar to pick it up with before bending down to poke it with his dagger "Fascinating." he mutters as he picks it up, his bored look quickly turning to an amused grin "Shall we?"

He stays quiet as York speaks to them, showing only a hint of his smug smile as they present the grizzly trophies. It doesn't bother him that they're about to get searched, after all he only carries a dagger and his wand.

When the handsome Garundi man and the wide eyed woman step forth to search them he spreads his arms out with a wolfish smile "I'm doing just splendid my dear, thank you for asking. And yourself, hmm? Enjoying ourselves, are we?" he says with a wink as the man approaches.

Coin tossed his weapon to the ground at the request and stood with is one hand raised as the strange armed duo - one a former patient another a former doctor - stepped out to greet them.

"How we're doing? Well we woke up in cells and had to watch a creature wearing another's guise torture some poor sod in front of us. Things haven't much improved since then."

Wrinkles formed on the one-armed warrior's forehead as he looked the two over and focused on the barricades. They looked makeshift and quickly erected, yet they had held so far. At the same time someone without proper training armed with nothing more than swords and leather armor shouldn't have been able to keep things as viscious as the nurse in the basement at bay if she really wanted in. So either the defenders had more numbers he had yet to see, or something else prevented an attack. Or perhaps these barricaded inmates and staff-members had been left alone, because things outside the barricades was a disorganized chaos and whatever was roaming the halls didn't have enough coherency to muster an all out attack. Or didn't feel like it.

"Curious, Coin remarked. "How many are you here?"

The Garundi man smiles at the comment from Samaris, shaking his head. "A bit morbid, aren't we?" Still, he maintains eye contact, moving out of the way to let everyone in. Once everyone is through, the shuts the door and locks it, then puts a makeshift bolt against the door away. The wide-eyed woman leads them to the old man, who offers his hand to everyone. "Vaustin York, head of the guards here at the, uh. I guess the Chapel survivors, is what we are." To call him older is disingenuous, he is about the same age as Coin looks, but is aged a bit more, with gray on his temples threatening the rest of his head. No real heavy scars to speak of, he is the leader of the guards. Behind them, a set of doors are closed, but voices can be heard echoing in one of the rooms. "Did I hear right? That you woke up in a cell? One of those shapeshifters killing another prisoner? I don't suppose he survived, did he?" The wide-eyed woman has a question herself. "Was it Cambre? Cambre Linweigh?" How would they know?

"At any rate," York interrupts, "Reckon it'll be best if you meet Winter." The guards surround them and help escort them. There are three sets of doors, one heading to the immediate right, one in front of them, and another further down the L-shaped corridor past the barricade. At the end of that corridor, beyond the second set of doors on that wall, is a large, red wall, brick yet covered in a strange kind of yellow, veiny fungi, jaunting their memory, somehow; what did Coin remember? What about that dream... fungi?

But he'd never been here before, and certainly not with that thing.

"Don't pay it any mind, now. We don't know what it is, but it keeps things from the other side from getting in. The main foyer is through that wall. But you get up close, the eye opens, and it says some kinda riddle. We don't bother it while it weeps, and it's always weeping." The fungi seems to notice, and opens its eyes; it had not looked like a closed eye before. The eye is beautiful, overly large, but misleading: in the dark depths of the pupil, a pair of fanged teeth appear. Building up in the tear duct is a yellowish liquid, which falls onto the ground beside it, before the eye closes again.

Without knocking, the wide-eyed woman opens the door to their right, causing the room to become hushed. Improvised pallets are clustered beneath sculpted divinities, and cooking fires burn beneath cracked windows in this chapel. Panes of violet and blue stained glass form spiraling patterns between prison-like bars, while dozens of candles flicker from modest alcove shrines. It seems heavenly, compared with the rest of what they call Briarstone Asylum. Around the many pallets, tables, chairs, pews, and other randomly scattered materials, there are people of all shapes, sizes, nationalities, and races. Children, women, men, somewhere between all those; Humans, Halflings, Half-Elves; patients, orderlies, and doctors. Well, doctor's coats; further inspection reveals it to be a prisoner beneath. "Reckon there are about twenty-seven of us in total. We're a smaller faction, in the larger scheme of things. That yellow cult is larger, and we can't tell how many of those dead things or shapeshifters there are." He nods to the other guards, who head back to their posts. The Garundi fellow offers Samaris a final smile.

"Winter's an outsider, like you lot look. Priestess of Pharasma. Got two colored eyes, supposed to be a blessing of some sort, just looks queer to me." He steps onward, heading to the dark woman at the opposite side of the room, near where the shrines to many gods appear: they are all recognizable, and while most are civilized deities, a few are... less than beneficent. The walls of this place are high, and each corner of it is hollowed out for some kind of fulfilling place, where there might be a shrine or token or icon of some sort waiting to be noticed, to be prayed to. Offering boxes mark the sides.

The woman is tall, with black hair that reflects in the dim candle light. She speaks with a child as they approach, but turning to look at York, he notes the group and her face hardens from the soft state she had worn for the boy. The boy disappears into shadows, the soft pitter-patter of feet heading elsewhere, while the woman walks forward. "Who are these newcomers, York? You have vetted them?" The hardened older man swallows before speaking. "Yes, ma'am. They've killed a group of shapeshifters, brought their heads to us." He does not have them to present, but he has seen them. "Was Oathsday among them?" She looks to the newcomers, asking what York had not thought to.

Beautiful, yet hard, like untrampled fresh snow. Her eyes are two different colors, but it's hard to tell what they are in this light; one looks dark, the other is a daring shade of yellow.

"Who are you? Where have you come from?"

The Chapel survivors. The changeling they had so recently killed had mentioned them. So this was them. At the question about the other prisoner all she could do was sadly shake her head. "No, he didn’t. And all I can tell you is that he was young and blond." Trying to remember more details only ended with vivid images of his violent and gruesome end floating to the fore of her mind. Not something Victoria was keen on dwelling on. Maybe one of the others could offer more information.

The strange eye garnered a long look from her and a wide berth when they passed it. For the moment she accepted that it could be dealt with later, but it was not something she felt entirely comfortable with. While it was open, the look made her skin crawl. One mystery at a time. And for now this Winter was the primary concern. Compared with a lot of other things they had seen since waking up in the cells below, the woman looked ordinarily enough - different colored eyes notwithstanding.

Victoria studied the other woman just as she studied them. When the inevitable questions came, she replied: "I am Victoria," I think. She considered introducing the others, but decided that it might be best if each of them decided for themselves what to say and what not to say. "As for where we came from. Well, most recently from the cells in the basement. Before that…" she shrugged, trying to not let it show how disturbed she still was about not remembering, "no clue.

We were hoping you could at least shed some light on what is going on in this place."

"Morbid? Oh why thank you my dear...." Samaris says with a low chuckle moving behind the guards as they go in search of this Winter but his attention is soon drawn to the fungi covered wall and the eye upon it. He listens with interest, putting to memory every scrap of information they offer about the strange eye "Fascinating." he says, moving closer only to realize they are being harried onward "I'd very much like to study it!" he says with an all too innocent look on his face "You know, as soon as we're done with this Winter person."

He is all sweet smiles as they are brought before the priestess, trying his best to behave "Sweet Victoria speaks the truth, we honestly don't know nothing my dear. However...uh.. I noticed there are only orderlies and patients here even though some have put on doctor's clothing, is it right to assume all the senior staff has been vanquished or were they a part of whatever hostile takeover this place been through?"

"Coin," the one-armed swordsman replied in response to the black-haired woman's first question. "And I mimic the sentiments of my fellow amnesiacs. I have no memory of anything prior to this place - only strange dreams of us..." he indicated the three people alongside him "... running away from a creature more monster than man in tattered clothing. And the sight of that beady-eyed, patronizing son of a she-wolf as he berated me - us - for being a thorn in his side and how his face leered as he took pleasure in our torments."

Coin spat to clear the foul taste from his mouth. The sensation of moss wriggling over his skin was something that would haunt him to the end of his days.

The image of the man and the rush of emotions that followed it back then fluttered through the swordsman's head and he felt his mouth turn into a sneer at the memory. Something told him that if he stuck his blade through the heart of that man, it'd be covered with tar and coal rather than blood upon exit.

"Was that this Oathsday you talk about? Tall, beard to here..." he indicated the middle of his chest with his hand, "black with streaks of white and grey? Has a thing for purple cloth and fur and round shades to cover his shifty eyes?"
