Mercenaries: Making A Difference


It is the year 3054. The mercenary has always had a tough life. Lately, life has gotten tougher.

The mysterious Clans invaded from beyond known space and took over a major chunk of the Inner Sphere, stopping only when ComStar troops fought them to a standstill and forced them to agree to a temporary truce on Tukayyid. House Lords and mercenary commanders took over control of the Mercenary Review Board from ComStar and renamed it the Mercenary Review and Bonding Commission. The Clan war and ComStar's Primus Waterly's failed grab for total power over the Inner Sphere split ComStar into two groups, ComStar and the Word of Blake, who are at each other's throats.

Just to make a living - hell, just to stay alive, a merc must depend only on himself and his troops. In a universe where every potential employer might be playing political games, the mercenary must stay honorable and trustworthy as a matter of policy.

Now more than ever, reputation is everything.


THE MERCS



Despite the long history of the mercenary trade, most individuals - including the mercenary's employers - remain woefully ignorant of the forces that motivate mercenary units, the daily business of operating a mercenary unit, the wide range of professionalism demonstrated by different units and the different attitudes held by employers and civilians toward mercenary units.

Contrary to popular belief, most who choose the life do not turn mercenary for monetary reasons. The potential for financial gain exists, to be sure, as illustrated by some certain renown Merc Units. However, business ventures and numerous other endeavors are far more likely to yield profits than mercenary contracts, without subjecting an individual to the personal risk of battle. As with other businesses, the majority of new mercenary outfits will fail. Only the foolish or the desperate delude themselves into thinking that forming a mercenary command will enable them to easily amass great wealth.
So what drives those with the heart of a warrior and drive to become one into the private sector? In most cases, the lure of freedom.

The numbers don't lie...

For those individuals who still believe that a mercenary career provides an easy path to wealth, the New Avalon Business Advocate provides the following data:
  • A new mercenary command forms every 1.65 Terran-standard Days
  • More than 40% of all fledgling mercenary commands will be destroyed in battle or disbanded through bankruptcy within six months of their inception.
  • More than 60% of new units will be destroyed or disbanded within one year of inception
  • The average income for a MechWarrior in a financially solvent mercenary command is 750 C-bills every two weeks - a figure within the median income range of the average Inner Sphere citizen.
  • A mercenary warrior has an 87 % change of being killed in a battle within 10 years

Character Creation/Game Setup

This Game is for 4-7 players MAX.

Need the following:

Background (which should include how you obtained your Mech; whether you salvaged it after a battle and brought it to where it is now, it was given/willed to you, or you bought it and paid it off somehow.

- Your Mercenary Unit: I have the name "Izzy's Irregulars", and have a short and sweet background on it, which is totally non canon. If the players as a group come up with another name, I'll probably be okay with it. Everyone will have to get along in some shape, form, or fashion. As a Unit, you have a few battles under your Merc Unit belt, and even a dropship - size will depend on # of Mechs in unit. The rest we'll flesh out.

- The Game calls for 6 mechs, so each player can have one. If all seven who have shown interest still want to play, we'll figure it out.

- Characters will be created using the Serenity Cortex Rules. It is pretty straightforward. A list of skills will be provided once the Game Forum is up, as well the character creation Guidelines.

- Mech Selection - All Mechs will be of a construction date no later than 3039.Here is a Master List off the web. For Technical Readouts on a specific Mech, you'll have to dig deeper, though if you can't find it, I will assist. GM will have final approval on all Mech Selections.

- Mech Combat: All Mech combat will be governed by the BattleTech rules. A Hybrid system for Initiative, Movement, and weapons attacks will be put in place to make things move quicker and simpler in the Play-by-Post Forum.

- Not Allowed List: No Clan mechs, gear, or a background of any kind. The Clans will only be mentioned, but not seen at all, at least for this first adventure/game.

  • Name: Aleksis Kaidonovsky

  • Appearance: Aleksis is 1.86 meters tall and weighs 102 kilograms. Fair skinned with gray eyes and black hair, he dyes his head hair platinum blonde. He prefers to wear dark colors. He is often seen smoking cherry vanilla flavored cigarillos. Aleksis looks closer to 40 than his actual age which is probably why he dyes his hair.
  • Personality: Aleksis is a fairly no-nonsense guy. He neither jokes nor takes jokes well. Aleksis has a bit of a temper but it mostly manifests in cold stares and some choice words in Russian. He loves chess though he is mediocre at it. Aleksis neither drinks nor gambles but likes tobacco. He'd rather be fighting in his mech than fraternizing with his companions.
  • Background: Aleksis is the third son of a wealthy family from the Sol System. His father Mikhail bought him a Phoenixhawk in hopes that his exploits would bring fame to the family. And anyhow, who cared if Aleksis died- after all he had two older brothers that could inherit. His personal mech was extremely damaged by a Wolfhound in his first combat engagement. Luckily he made a serendipitous jump that ended with a kick to the other mech's cockpit, killing the pilot. Not having the money to repair the Phoenixhawk, Aleksis was forced to sell it to repair the less damaged Wolfhound. He admits that the mech is a good one but he misses the ability to do jumps.

Appearance: On the bigger side, this five foot eight human always stood out when it came to her weight. It didn't get her down though because usually her brown hair and pale skin were covered in mech grease or behind a computer screen crunching numbers. Smile lines and wrinkles around her eyes and mouth show how much she likes to have a laugh

Personality: Fun loving, nerdy, always likes to crack a joke even when inappropriate, Trixie is a wealth of knowledge and sarcasm. If she isn't under a mech, or behind a computer screen she's probably stuck on some formula that she couldn't crack. She tends to focus on whatever she's working on, and stop paying attention to the world around her, sometimes that's a good thing, but usually it's not.

Background : Growing up it wasn't unheard of for all of the Spond children (he rand her four older brothers) to be under hoods of cars or fixing up machines they found in their family dump. That was where Trixie got her love of junk, and her love of machines. When she went off to college she decided to go for Computer Engineering, and found she loved it so much she kept going back. Some how they gave her a doctorate, and she came home to the Spond junkyard with a lust of new techniques she learned from some of the other engineering students.

With some down time, and some failed job interviews, she started working on building a mech just to prove she could. She built one out of old parts from the junk yard, some of which probably weren't supposed to stay together for long periods of time, and ended up with something that she was proud to call her own. Larry, the name she dubbed for the mech, was functional, but definitely not pretty.

Yes. So far only two of the seven have taken a slot. Also, if the apps are numerous I will entertain running two lances of the same Merc unit, or setting up another merc unit.

Can you tell us anything about the initial plot hook? Where does the mercenary unit start, and which regional powers are fighting? Are we likely to be involved in a single conflict that will span multiple missions, or a variety of missions each for a different employer?

Name: "Commander" Acelynn Blanchfield Humphreys

Appearance: Acelynn is tall and thin, her five foot eleven frame towering above most of the men she has commanded. Her reserved beauty was never something one would mention in her presence, for fear of her steely-eyed gaze or the upturn of her chin. She much preferred to keep herself tidily dressed and groomed, her chestnut hair short and in a proper military manner at all times. As a former commander and noblewoman, she knows the importance of a first impression and gives very close attention to detail, in dress and demeanor.

Personality: Raised as a warrior first and a lady of the court second, Acelynn is never shy to speak her mind. As her fathers only daughter, she was brought up the same as her four brothers. A tomboy in the truest sense of the word, she was never comfortable among the fancy ladies of the court and much preferred the company of soldiers and those with discipline. Almost hawkish, she never turns away from a good challenge and is a strategist, both in and out of her Battlemech.

Background: The second cousin of Dalma Humphreys, Acelynn fought alongside her family and countrymen in the Andurien Secession. At the time too young to command a front line unit, she was relegated to a sentry position on Andurien. Her father had gifted her a hand-me-down Orion that was it fairly good shape and was ready to fight as the Marik forces 'invaded' her homeworld. Her unit, 6th Defenders of Andurien was fairly successful in their defense of the royal homes, despite the ultimate loss to the First Marik Militia in December of 3039. Having suffered a minor leg injury during the battle to defend her home, she ended up as a prisoner of war. She spend the next two months in an off world Marik camp before the capture of her Great Aunt and the surrender of the Duchy of Andurien.

As a military leader and noble of house Andurien, Acelynn was up to face the military tribunal for her 'treason' against the Free Worlds League. Luckily, or not, the death of her great aunt in March of 3040 led Thomas Marik to offer a full pardon to all captured 'aggressors' in the Andurien Secession. The Andurian Military was completely disbanded, but Acelynn used what little political pull she had to save her own personal Battlemech.

No longer legally allowed to serve in a military unit, Acelynn turned her attention to the private sector. With her considerable skill and military background, she opted to look for work among the many mercenary companies. Acelynn found quick work in a mercenary company, bringing her old, but well conditioned Orion with her...

Appearance: Average hight with a slimmer but muscular body, jet black hair that he does his best to keep looking good even under his helm. He has tanned skin with only minor scars, most of which are on his arms. He had cool blue eyes that quickly turn ice cold in the heat of battle. He wears standard clothing, most of the time just his jumpsuit which is black with a gold stripes down the arms and legs.

Personality: Helix is the kind of guy that tries to get along with everyone, laughing and joking with those who want to laugh and joke and Ok with sitting in silence if he is with that type of person. Dispite this he actually cares very little if most people like him or not, the only ones he cares about are his lance mates. All jokes aside he has one thing that goes before everything else, a creed taught to him by his late father....Finish the job no matter what the cost. As of now he has never failed to complete a mission given to him and he intends to keep it that way, but the length of time it takes to get the job done is flexible.

The somewhat new merc unit you are in is based out of the planet Outreach. Per Mechwarrior canon, it is a haven for Mercenaries and Mercenary companies. The detailed information on this is too much to post here.
Same goes for who is or is not fighting who in 3054. Conflict will be at minimum a single mission, and depending on character/group decisions could be 1-3 more fights/battles in Mechs - at least for this first adventure.
The first adventure will start out with a single employer.

Just checking on Tech level. So it is 3054 but no Mechs types newer than 3039. So are XL Engines, ferro fibrous, ER weapons, TSM, etc. out or included? It's late enough for that stuff but I figure I better check.

You can take the "Tech" from up to a few years before 3054, say up to 3050, but not the "mech." I'm sticking to the Mech Year. What that means is that if you choose a Mech "as is", then it's tech will only be from the year of it's manufacture. You can "Build your own" Mech, and Modify a 3039 Chassis. Final Mech build approval will be at the discretion of the GM.
Be advised that the more "Tech" aka number crunching you'll have to do in a fight, you have on your Mech, the more you'll have to do. I'm going to go with the "Trust but verify" on all rolls for Mech combat.
