He lets Tekarch do the talking - instead, he focuses on countering any incoming attacks against either he or his companion. If one of them lashes out, he is prepared to parry it and respond in kind with a thrust of his own.

Poor decisions The men look each other in the eye and then go for the attack. Ruslan parries the only blow that might have landed and Tekarch kills one of them with near ease. The second man, though hurt by Ruslan's parry, is alive enough to drop his weapon and hold up his hands. After that he does try for a bit of bluster, "You do know we're Imperial Tax collectors, right? This here is banditry. An Imperial legion will come through here and turn this place inside out for you." Apparently he does not recognize the Knight's Sigil either of you wear. Then again in the emperor's personal lands there aren't any outposts as they have long been folded into the Imperial garrisons.

Tekarch spat the bit of skin he'd torn from the dead man's neck before responding. "I know exactly who you are. Did you know Imperial tax collectors are only authorized to collect coin? I'd love for legionnaires to show up and see you explain that. Or that. Or especially that," Jabbing his sword at the various luxury items in the space before finally settling on the bound woman.

"Where is the key for those chains?"

Ruslan Mancinus Keeping one eye open on the collector and the woman, Ruslan checks the commander to see if he can locate the key for the woman's bonds as well as any other incriminating evidence.

Aftermath The opposed accusation makes the man go silent and unwilling to provide additional details. Ruslan, seeing that the words aren't working goes for a physical search and finds the keys for the woman's manacles. Meanwhile Tekarch is scanning the woman and really can't help but notice the Commander and his men. Each of them has a low aura but, beyond that, there is a lingering aura of something very powerful and very evil. So, either they have been hanging around one of the legendary dragons and it was evil or they have been close to or in communication with a demon of some sort.

Ruslan Mancinus Throwing the key to Tekarch, Ruslan motions with his rapier towards the man. With a cocky smile on his lips, he says "Fine. If you won't speak, then pick up your sword. If you can get past me, my friend will allow you to go. However, you will not get past me, so make your peace with your god before you do so." He is hoping the man will surrender, although Ruslan's amiable manner makes him Dice Intimidate to influence man to give up: 1d20 12 not very threatening. If the man does grab his sword and attack Ruslan, he is prepared to parry the attack and respond with a thrust of his own. Despite the threat of death, however, Ruslan keeps the magic of the rapier active so the man will be knocked unconscious only.

Tekarch caught the key and walked up to the woman, speaking reassuringly. "You're safe now. I'm Sir Tekarch, of the Knights of Justice. Give me two ticks and I'll have you out of those chains."

Right about the same time he had everything unlocked, Ruslan finished his challenge, and Tekarch's eyes went wide. "No I will not. Not when their auras are tainted by demon exposure. Put the scoundrels in irons and be done with it," he said, tossing the manacles back to Ruslan.

In the Commander's Tent The woman is freed, and she nods slowly. "Maryanne Tanner sir. Thank you kindly, they...they...killed father." She throws herself into Tekarch's arms. The woman, who is a few inches taller and around a hundred and ninety pounds is not easy to dislodge. "The had me cooking and cleaning for them. Kept asking me to do all sorts of horrid things for them." The man under Ruslan's blade drops his own and holds up his hands, "Not me, it was him. I didn't want anything to do with demons I swear." He points to the commander, but his voice and mannerisms suggest he's not being entirely truthful.

Looking the wrong way, Tekarch was caught off guard and had to take a half-step back and plant his foot to be avoid being bowled over by twice his weight in grateful damsel. But beyond that he didn't shy away, loosely and comfortingly embracing Maryanne. Patting her on the back, he repeated, "You're safe now. You'll be OK. It'll be OK."

Instead of calling the guard out again, Tekarch tried a different tack. Turning his head so he could fix the man with one eye, Tekarch said, "You're right. You don't want anything to do with demons. Your deceased colleague's soul should be in the underworld by now, and I guarantee he's regretting his life decisions. Fortunately, it's never too late in Her eyes for justice to prevail."

He let the thought sink in a moment before continuing. "Tell me who's summoning the demons so we can put an end to them. Or is your soul like the oaths you swore to defend your liege and his realm-hollow and worthless?"

 

Assuming we've been talking to this guy for 1 minute, I'm going to use my Sense motive unlock to try to read his thoughts.

OOC Sorry for the late response, temporary position at work is MUCH more work than I am used to.

Ruslan Mancinus Ruslan feels disappointed Tekarch believed he was going to run the man through, but it quickly rolls off him like water on a duck's back. Kicking the man's blade away, Ruslan places manacles on both the conscious man and then the commander himself, linking their two manacles together by the chain. He then takes a guard position near them as well as keeping an ear and eye open for any other men who might enter and take some offense at what they see.

Lies and damned lies The man under the blades of you both whimpers and shakes his head. "I can't say more, I...you don't understand..." he shakes like a leaf and expires. His skin begins sloughing off his body and the skeleton begins to rise. Maryanne immediately retreats behind the two swordsmen as the skeleton finishes rising. It's eye sockets glow with a demonic red light and it points at the commander. His flesh begins sloughing off and his skeleton begins to rise along with the other men in the tent. As one they continue to speak, "The commander started it, but they all reveled in it. You need not worry about their souls as they mine now. Ahh, how I do so love greed, so many are mine now..." You hear shuffling outside the tent and Ruslan sees the entire encampment beginning to rise, not living men, but all skeletons. Ravening undead that are all headed your way.

Ruslan Mancinus Ruslan's trademark smirk doesn't change, but inside his mind is reeling at the sight before him. Fortunately, he is rather quick to recover. Without taking his eyes off the skeletons as he keeps his rapier leveled at them, he asks "Are you fit to run, girl? Because that may be in our best interest at this moment!" If Maryanne says she can run, Ruslan nods at Tekarch and says "Aye, let's do it then!" He will then run ahead of Maryanne, attempting to take out whatever threats they face but not seeking a fight other than for the trio to escape.

Tekarch's eyes widened in surprise for a moment. He definitely didn't see that one coming. Taking advantage of the Maryanne's surprise to free himself from her grasp, he turned around, but didn't say anything immediately. He was too focused on trying to piece together the forces at work here, and how he might possibly un-work them.

I'm really hoping these guys have a huge vulnerability to positive energy. I can blast them with channel energy, but two shots of 2d6 each won't put a dent in anything that's a real threat.

Memories Tekarch remembers training in the capital of Fallhold. Lessons were never easy but they were important. The man teaching that day was Count Klein, an older half-elven man missing an eye and the discussion was on skeletons. “Normally a Necromancer might raise a skeleton or even a large number of them. These types are generally easily fought no challenge for a good hammer, blunt damage is always best here people. The real worry is when some fool has contacted Sethmont the Demon Lord of Undeath. These fools ask him for wealth and so they are given wealth and excess but they will always thirst for more. Sometimes the curse will travel from one to the next most of them never knowing about the summons.” He looks to the class and sighs, “If you are unlucky enough to come upon these fools some action might cause them to break the agreement or the demon may decide to take what has been promised. Then you have yourself a Skeleton Horde seemingly just individual skeletons it is actually all one creature animated and filled with the power of demons. Ranged attacks are best with holy water, fire, and acid. If you must fight one in close melee make sure you have a choke point. Open ground is just asking for it to surround you and pick your flesh clean.”

Tekarch nodded in agreement to Ruslan. "We need to leave. This way." With a smooth motion, Tekarch turned and cut a hole in the back of the tent to escape through.

Once all the living had evacuated, Tekarch cut the supporting ropes in the back to collapse it and slow the horde down a bit. He explained between breaths as they ran. "I remember Count Klein talking about this once. Despite appearances, the whole thing is a single entity-kind of a demonic hive mind, I think. Arwk! He recommended basically everything we don't have right now-ranged weapons, holy water, acid, and alchemist's fire." Tekarch had left his bow behind today because he hadn't wanted to send mixed signal by walking into a parlay armed to the teeth.

"Which leaves us with basic horde fighting tactics-look for a choke point or solid wall so we can fight them without getting surrounded."

 

I guess I should've saved that second smite evil then...
