As for images when posting, that's an option. I've never cared for it but I've done it when asked and when people want to do it with their posts, I don't stop them. A lot of people do it and it certainly does help to get me in the right set of mind for a game to be reminded which set of characters I'm mucking about with ![]() I use images, generally only when a character is introduced or whenever they're a focus, whichever us more prevalent. But then, I also like using music and that's not everyone's thing.

And may I suggest using Background Skills? I've seen them used in one or two games and rather like this approach. |

Cool beans, guys. Anyone going to have disable device? We are missing an arcane and a trap dude. But I'm not sure how relevant that will be in a travelling AP, were we have some good perception. May just have to be creative at those times.
Background skills are the new paizo thing! I kinda like it too.

How have I never seen Background Skills before? This is exactly what I was going for when I created that system. D'oh. I'll look into it more and make a decision. As for character creation, the first post and third post remain entirely in tact; just ignore house rules, I'll rework that before next weekend, most likely.

So, having put e-ink to e-paper, I've mostly got a sheet sketched up. I picked up Planes and Nobility, grabbed Diplomacy and Sense Motive (and my modifiers on these are astronomical when I've got the phantom in my head), and then rounded it out with Spellcraft and Perception. Apparently I misread and I have all knowledge skills in class so I can always pick up more later as needed, but 6 skill points goes by pretty quick.
I've geared myself for ranged combat, with the phantom able to do some basic tanking and melee damage. The phantom is a bit weak without buffs, and my spells known is a limitation, but I think my little Spiritualist will be able to serve properly both in and out of combat. Also, because I've never used a scythe on a character before, I had to look up how exactly scythe combat looks on Youtube. Fun stuff. What I did notice is three of us have cure spells on our spell lists, so once we actually get some cash flowing cure wands will be almost universally useful. I'll take disable device. It matches my character anyway.

Alright, before I begin tonight's round of posting, a question regarding alternate systems:
This game utilizes quite a few systems that I am ambivalent (or close to it) about, but I figured I'd discuss each of them in kind and throw out another one that may be fitting. Primarily the game uses the Relationship system, in which everyone gets numeric numbers reflecting the NPC's relationship with the PC: it can be romantic, platonic, a rivalry, or antagonism, and the numbers reflect that. Likewise, each NPC has certain activities and triggers that they like and that affect them; NPC 1 might like jokes, while NPC 2 might be sensitive about their weight. Secondly, Caravans. Check it out in the Player's Guide or on the d20 SRD. It's essentially making a character sheet for the entire caravan with its own HP and such, simplifying combat. If you bunch can find a way to make it work, I'm all for it, but it's also not my favorite. Honor and Reputation: eventually this will come into play, because it wouldn't be a game with samurai and stuff without HONOR. But I'm not sure I care so much about this while we're still in Varisia. Thoughts? Finally, now that I realize it, the last system isn't up for negotiation and won't come into play for ages, so don't worry about it ![]()

Well, I think it kind of comes down to how much extra work you want to do, Sass. I get the impression that these systems exist to simplify things that could be extremely complex and abstract into something easy and numeric. Not using the relationship system means you have to adjudicate how every NPC feels about every PC, kind of like you are doing in S&S (even though there is a basic system in place there). Not using the caravan system means dealing with a lot of extra faces and the like when the Ice Giants of Ragnarok rain down death upon us.
I'm not heavily in or out of favor on either system. I think caravans seems like a neat thing but I've never seen it in use so it may be more troublesome in play than it is presented. I guess I'd say I'm in favor of using both systems but I won't balk at not using them if the vote goes that way, either. |

I'll rain some giant ice bits of rocknocks on that.
1. Relationship system. It's a good idea but I'm not a fan of the singular mechanics (on first look - possible I'm completely wrong here). This seems to use Cha or diplomacy as the basis, meaning that those of us with poor Cha or no diplomacy will never really see the benefit. Suppose I could take diplomacy but it seems like a forced choice and that's when I kick and scream like a spoiled dwarf brat. ![]() 2. Caravan system. This seems like a way to make your life easier is all. Haven't seen it in use either but am happy to give it a go. Of course, I like what you are doing in S&S so if you'd rather not then I fully support whatever the GM prefers so that you rock it out and we love it too. 3. Honor and Rep. I don't think that's much of a thing in Sandpoint. Or Varisia. It is in the Land of the Linnorm Kings, to some extent. But that may be completely different rep than what one wants in Tian Xi. Nothing to say about this one! Except, y'know, what I said. So ya, there. ![]()

Wait, how do you know about the Ice Giants of Ragnarok!?
Honestly the Relationship systems is one of my least favorite. This mechanic is why I call it Bioware: Pathfinder Edition, and it doesn't feel organic to me. Running diplomacy on S&S like I am is really annoying, so most likely the Relationship system, if it appears, will be greatly altered. And by altered, I mean you get benefits by doing things they like and giving them free stuff, but you aren't going to have like a relationship numerical system like SANDRU 20, SHALELU 1, AMEIKO -2, KOYA F'N HATES YOU. The Caravan system, like the ship system, could be super cool. That said, it would be somewhat stigmatizing in the sense that only one of you gets to roll at a time. Which we could handle by Day 1, Jarl rolls, Day 2, Blackfyre, etc. until we're done. That could work? I guess? Honestly the Caravan one is the only one I would 100% be for using, if you lot are. Last JR was completely against it. So when we got to the Caravan, the game died. Woo! So, maybe with the system, we'll be better off? ![]() Last thoughts from you two, Blackfyre and PIG?

I'm also not too great a fan of the relationship system. It feels so much like Dragon Age/KotoR: "Here, have a present. I don't like you, but I get points for giving it to you."
Regarding the caravan system I'm undecided. On the one hand it makes some things easier, especially for you, Sass, and faster for the odd "ups bandits show up" thing. On the other hand, for things like obstacles on the road, it would be interesting to see how the characters solve it instead of having just a dice roll or two. Continuing that train of thought, there is of course the point that such obstacles eat time and can, I imagine, get annoying if you meet the third of the same kind and have to play through it. *shrug* I guess I'm fine either way. |

Yeah, the time-eating thing is what may get to me. I may just do it on a case-by-case situation and make it so that we sometimes handle obstacles with creative thinking, and other times, with Caravan rolls. It's an option.
Also, I have just updated the Character Creation and Etiquette page with the following changes: 1.) Story Feats are free, if you want to try that. Likewise, Background Skills replace my Knowledge houserule. 2.) The only Houserule that remains is a new one, which most of my previous players are aware of. Check out the Perception/Initiative section, I can throw links your way to determine that. 3.) I made a section making clear how combat will work. Check that out as you like.

Looks good, Sass.
Do you have an eta for when you want character work finished? I've been pushing forward steady but I haven't pushed through to completion yet. I just don't want to be the guy who's holding everyone up. |

Well, we have one almost done, one near done, and another not quite there. Some are more ready than others to post their character in the character thread; much like Rise of the Runelords, I want a shortened version of everyone's bio which I will give forth a template for after I give it a bit more thought.
I guess as far as ETA's go, I want to get started before March? How's that? ![]()
