Baldric skipped a step at the sudden stop and his companion's outstretched hand. He began to ramble as ideas floated through his mind, "But we're hunting them. And shouldn't these people want there to be fewer of the cursed things near them? Or are they unaware of them being near them and you're worried about scaring them? Or do you think the illithids have eyes and ears here, waiting to report to them? Or-" He was interrupted by his eye rolling in its socket; he took a second to readjust it. "Ah, where was I?"

It's easy to tell that the boy is frightened, he looks astonished and was startled enough to have dropped the step-stool by his side.
The boy appeared to have frozen up a bit, but altogether sensible enough to stammer his offer of brushing the Donkey. He doesn't appear jumpy, just concerned.

Baldric turned from the boy, as if fishing for something in his pocket. Instead, he conjured a small object: a swath of brown cloth. He tied it around his face to cover both the Eye and the markings around his socket. "Anyway, I hope I don't bother you, young man. The road can be dangerous and/or wondrous."
