Half-and-Half

Name: Graben "Far-Eyes" Aeravir
Race: Half-Elf
Class: Wild Caller Summoner

Background: Watch an wait. Patience must be the hunter's sharpest and most delicate tool. Graben was only 10 and hiding in a tree, hoping to actually impress father this time. But fight as he would, the need for action always overwhelmed him and push him to move. With exaggerated care, Graben climbed down and moved as quickly and carefully as he dared, looking for signs of his father. He searched in vain, knowing he would be criticized for not having patience and knowing he wouldn't find any evidence of father's passing. Then surprisingly, there it was, the smallest sign but clear as day to one actively looking for it. Mentally running through his lessons, Graben oriented himself and carefully and quietly followed the trail. It wasn't long before He spotted movement in the distance. Freezing, Graben decided to circle carefully and come at father in an unfamiliar direction. Never give your prey what they expect, be unpredictable. His father's words ring in his ears. Graben gets excited as he approaches and his father remains motionless. Father had obviously found where Graben hid himself earlier and was waiting for Graben to give himself away. With exaggerated care, Graben approached and drew his sickle. His heart beating wildly, Graben pounced and grabbed his father's hair and placed the sickle under his chin...only to discover he had been duped. Diving immediately to the side, Graben took the empty cloak with him as three arrows pelted the earth where he had been. Before Graben could recover, there was a rush of air, and two familiar boots appeared in front of Graben.

----5 Years Later----

Deituko dut,
me zerbitzatzeko.
Ezinezkoa da aurre,
deia behartzen.

Graben chanted softly to himself, focusing on his need and the act of drawing the creature to his will. The brush around him rustles and three tiny insects appear, and although Graben doesn't see anything, the stirges glide toward a bush a little ways out. There is a rustle as father barely dodges away, the insects coning after him. With precise strikes, he methodically take the flyers out of the air, each winking out before they hit the ground. But just as he strikes the last one down, two furred forms dash at him and attempt to overrun him. The wolves snarl and harry him, but Father is too much for the two and they are dispatched after barely a minute, but then Graben is on him. Sickle flashing and caught on his father's sword. "How many time will you make this mistake boy! Do not cross blades with someone of superior skill, you cannot win!" As if to punctuate his last work he strikes at a vulnerable point, only to have his blade raise sparks as it meets magical resistance. Father pulls the blade back and for a moment there is the flicker of a smile. "And father," Graben says with a slight smirk, "You said to not cross blades alone with someone of superior skill." With a snarl a shadow tears out of the air and snaps at his heels, father dancing out of the way, barely. The fight was much closer than others had been, Graben even managed to score a few hits, but in the end father prevailed. Flushed from the battle, Graben smiles at father but his expression is even more grim than usual. "I cannot teach you more. You are barely passable with in sword play, and your magic is too different from that which I am familiar with. Take what you need and travel to the city. I will be gone before you wake." Father hesitated for a moment, but then turned on his heel and disappeared, Graben didn't see him again.

Name: Sadron Aeravir
Race: Half-Elf
Class: Skirmishing Wild Shadow Ranger of Nature

The sun shines down softly on a luke-warm lake. The water is still--the wind shunned by a perimeter of pine trees. Insects creak and big bullfrogs croak. Birds chirp and water lilies float. As Sadron stands still as the water, nearly knee deep in the transparent turquoise pond, trident ready to thrust, he takes in the beauty and simplicity of nature. And as he waits, he thinks. Is it ok that I am out here? Is it ok, he asks himself, to remain lost in nature? Is there a difference I can make? That I should make?

<> <> <>

He does not remember much about the city, but he does remember his mother. She was beautiful and loving, and envy is ugly and spiteful. Sadron didn't understand prejudice much at the time, nor did he understand his parents choice to combat it. All he knew was that his father did not quite seem the same as his mother or all the other city-folk for that matter, and that most people seemed to have a problem with that. In an effort to relieve that strain on the family, the father left and took his son Graben, leaving Sadron and his mother in the city. But removing his presence from her did not help, because Sadron was all the proof anyone needed to point fingers, to judge, and to hate her. She began to grow much more concerned about what others thought of her. She became upset when people started rumors about why her husband left her to take care of their son. The stress, persecution, judgment, disrespect, and lack of her husband gradually eroded away her emotional state, and then her mental state, and ultimately her physical state as well. She died when Sadron was only ten years old. With no one there to raise him, his father and brother travelling who-knows-where together, he fled to the woods. He found a difficult life surviving alone in the forest, and every day he blamed the people of his city for his hardships and for his mother's death. Alone in the woods for years fighting to survive, the struggles of the boy became the skills of a man, and he matured out the anger that drove him there in the first place.

A shadow in the water darts from beneath a small, bright reflection on the surface. In a fluid stroke, the trident splits through the water as an arrow splits the wind. The fish fights furiously for a few moments, but soon it stops its futile flailing. Maybe I could give them a second chance. Maybe they weren't ready. Surely no one but myself benefits from my life of solitude. No more shall I waste my years. As fate would have it, right then a familiar beast flew by. It was Gawx, the eidolon, or pet, of his brother. It was searching for him. It was strange. Even though he hardly knew his brother despite their weak effort to try to keep in touch, Sadron felt now that if there was one person on this world who he could start to trust, it would be his brother. He wondered what his brother had in store for him.
