Cismontane, City Under the Mountain

Cismontane:

The city drives like a wedge into the side of the Breaking, bisected by the great avenue known as the Skid. At the point of the wedge lies the Square of the Gods, where temples to the known Pantheon mix with those of forgotten gods older than the world itself. It is home to the richest of the rich, and the poorest of the poor.

Just outside the Great square, surrounding it from cliff to cliff lies the district known as the Collar. Clamped around the square like gilded steel, the Collar is the center of government for the city, home to the great houses and the Senate.

Just outside the Collar, and like it bisected by the Skid, is the Ruff. In many ways, this is the heart of Cismontane. This is the home of merchants and the urban middle class, with the Great market lying on both sides of the skid. To the east lie the more "respectable" shops, and the great amphitheatre cut into the side of the living rock that is the heart of the theatre district. The heart of the western ruff is the arena, home to contests of death and skill. It's in the west side that you will find things like alchemists, weaponsmiths and other places of interest to adventurers.

Beyond the Ruff is the Cloak the third and last ring of the City. The western side of the Cloak is the Shambles, the very poorest and most dangerous district in Cismontane, leading all the way down to the river Har. On the eastern side of the Cloak you find the docks and warehouses. This is also where the merchant houses are found, close to their seat of power.

Cismontane is built into a large cleft in the side of the Mountain. It's just over seven miles from the beginning of the Skid on the north bank of the Har to the Breaking itself on the far side of the Great Square, and about nine miles from the westernmost part of the Cloak to the eastern edge. All told, there are probably half a million inhabitants in the City itself, with about a third of that on the south bank and Harfaith Island in addition. The population is mostly human, probably on the order of 80% but it's large enough that most other races are present.
