The outer planes are fun to play with, too. The Tenth Hell, etc.

My favorite to date is "Here There be Flagons." I like to dust it off anytime I get into a new campaign with players who haven't heard it yet.
"The Little Silver Flask" was the base of operations for the players in my ill-fated West Marches campaign. Though I haven't gotten to use it yet, someday I plan to deploy my bakery named "Whisk it for the Biscuit." |

I've had many but in my younger days I DMed two campaigns, one was decidedly good and one was decidedly evil. This was with a group of fellow paratroopers in the 82nd ABN Division back in the days of AD&D. Thus, we were just a little bit nutty to begin with.
The PCs in the evil campaign worked for a certain very high level demon, spreading chaos and mayhem while also retrieving artifacts to allow said demon to attain universal domination, blah, blah, blah. You all know, the usual stuff. So, the group would meet at a bar called Demo's Place on Gorgon Road to get their instructions for missions. For extra credit, guess which demon lord they worked for.

Interestingly, I generally take my names from real pubs I have encountered that i find quirky. Examples:
The Hung, Drawn and Quartered The Pit and the Pendulum The Spread Eagle Penny Black Moon Under the Water The Cat & Custard pot The Pyrotechnists Arms The Dirty Habit There are so many unusual pub names to draw inspiration from. But a tavern I used in a game once was simply called The Dwarfs' Beard.

I know the DM of one of my regular games has cribbed a couple of inn names from this list of actual British establishments.

There is one name each, for a bar and an inn, that I'd come up with which have stuck with me. Respectively, they're The Drowned Rat and the Old Oak Inn. Helps that the former was for a fan PbP of Final Fantasy 9, existing in the city of Burmecia. Which rains all the time and is full of rat-people. As for the Old Oak Inn, I like how the name flows and how rustic it sounds. I think it's an unwritten rule that bars, pubs, taverns and so forth have to have baudy names in fantasy. Plus I liked The Oak and Crosier from Elder Scrolls 4.
If I can get away with it, I should include more versions of the Four Winds Bar. It's already my OOC thread name for my 5e game, sure, but Blue Oyster Cult's "Astronomy" is a treasure. And if we were talking general store names too, I'd also include Wayne's Outfitters. Two pop culture references for the price of one, to be appreciated the best if you get the more obscure one first. The Jolly Toad
The Rasselbock The Corbinian The Staggered Stallion The Styx The Sunken Dragon The Moon Gobbler The Doxy Mare The Red Boar Tavern Cream & Crop Meg's Mead Hall The Doe-eyed Inn Hillside Inn The Speckled Hen The Inn of Fanciful Raisins Inn of the Bergmönch __________ I also make sure that every inn in my world is described differently and has it's own specific menu. For example ... THE JOLLY TOAD The Jolly Toad takes its name from boulder in the yard, carved to resemble a smiling frog. The lacqured interior walls sport antlers and other trophies. A stout field-stone hearth sits at one end of the common room and a small wooden stage sits at the other. FOOD & DRINK Endless Stew (kept simmering 30 years) 2 coins Vegtable Broth 1 coin Broth with Dumplings 4 coins Bread & Cheese 2 coins Fried Cow-heel 3 coins Polly's Pudding 3 coins Brown Ale 1 coin Pear Cider (Warm or Cold) 1 coin Flaming Schnapps (Pear) 5 coins Coffee or Tea 1 coin ROOMS & AMENITIES Private Room 15 coins per night Private Suite 45 coins per night Common Room Floor 3 coins per night Common Room Near the Fire 8 coins per night Conference Room 2 coins per hour Cold Bath 1 coin Hot Bath 4 coins Soap 1 coin Chamber Pot, Loan of 1 coin Stabling 3 coins per night Laundry Service 1 coin Garment Repair Varies Messenger (Local) 1 coin Messenger (Rider) Varies These prices are not D&D-friendly, but should be easy enough to change. - Loots and Lutes
- The Hairy Spider - The Merry Elfmaid - Marty McPoots Pub and Grille - Smarty Pants Tavern - The Glowing Worm - The Tower of Boom! Naming places isn't my specialty after going over these. (These are all from old notebooks from the early days.)
