Mapping software?

I'm not much of a expert at drawing, I'm was wondering if there is software people use for drawing world maps or other large-scale maps. I'm definitely seeing encounter or tactical-creation map software, or I can just use google draw for that, but my web search is coming up empty for these other use cases. What are people using?

Like an old weirdo, I still use AutoREALM. It's free, everything in it is public domain, and it comes with some sweet fonts!
