The Flowing Plains

The Flowing Plains

Game SystemDnD 5e

Themecommunity, coming of age, the journey of life, finding a deeper meaning

FlavourAfrican tropical jungles, swamps, rivers and land; tribal shamans, hunters, witch doctors and gatherers

Game DescriptionThe Flowing Plains are the low lands between the Falls (a dozen-mile-high cliff face) and the Mother Ocean. The plains are criss-crossed by a multitude of rivers and dotted by frequent lakes and swamps. The land is vibrant and teeming with life, both harmless and dangerous. Thousands of different species of frogs, fish, caymans, birds, monkeys, rodents and serpents populate the plains.

The tribes are more divided by cultural and spiritual differences than race. The waveborn (water genasi), the lake folk (sea elves), and the riverkin (triton) usually congregate in their villages dominated by one race, but rare is the settlement that has no permanent dweller of both other ones. And the tribes are all made of all three, the shamans actually consider it a very bad omen if a tribe loses all communities of one race.

The most prevailent danger under water, on land and in air are the drakes, which not only inhabit the Flowing Plains, but also the ocean shallows and the Falls. These stealthy predators can attack anything, they see all other living things as food. They also fight each other, but only for territory and mating, no-one has seen a drake eat another drake. The most dangerous of them all are the storm drakes, which, predictably, only come out during storms.

The tribes live in relative peace, aside from infrequent skirmishes and predatory attacks from animals. This is going to change soon, however, yet unknown to all.

As the rainy season draws to its end, all the communities are preparing for the Sun Festival, which takes place when the first full day with sunshine comes. The festival is mostly organized regionally, with about a dozen villages participating in it, set to the settlement most central for the region. Carphome is the place for all the characters, situated on the shore of Silver Lake, famous for its splendid carp population.

CrunchStarting Level: 1
Acceptable Races: water genasi, sea elf, triton (renamed in the previous fieldset)
. . . . the Plane Shift merfolk races are variations on the triton, called seakin instead of riverkin
Ability Scores: standard array
Classes: most WotC classes (though I can't really see an artificer here)
Shells / Belongings: a tribal version of items, or standard starting money
Extras: 2 feats, 300 shells worth of potions from the Sane Magical Prices document
Hp: max at level 1, dice/2 later

Posting Rate: about 3 times a week
Number of Players: 3 (yes, I'd like a small team)
Time of Choosing: Sep 22, but this may change on notice

  • Of course, the supposed application end is Sep 17 (now moved to 22), not August. I don't know how I typed that.
  • Players new to D&D, PbP, or the site are all welcome. We'll help each other. In my opinion, RPG is the ultimate cooperative (board) game.
  • How in-depth the game posts are will change naturally according to current situation, I think (my posts definitely will). I don't want to set a hard standard, but I'd like descriptive, evocative posts that help all participants to immerse themselves in the game's flavor and mood.
  • The Plane Shift merfolk races are variations on the triton, called seakin instead of riverkin.

Ready to Play PCs
  • HexenArtz: lake folk storm sorcerer
  • Kweheri: riverkin phantom rogue
  • kaylara: seakin moon druid
  • The Rat Queen: lakefolk paladin
  • Azure Nokori: riverkin sun cleric
  • penbeast0: lake folk star druid
  • allstarr: waveborn twilight cleric

Conceptual PCs
  • delpinator: riverkin fighter
  • Kshnik: riverkin celestial warlock

Background solider
traits I enjoy feats of strength. I'm haunted by memories of great hunts.
ideal following orders without question is unwise
bonds I fight for those who can't fight for themselves
flaws I have little respect for those who have yet to provide to the tribe.

Hi there. Saw your post, and am interested in a water genasi, with their natural trait cantrips, and those of the class.

I've only been playing 5e for a few months, so while not completely new, I'm not a veteran player. Hope that's ok.

Would you be ok with a Twilight Domain Cleric? Because they are "Clerics who seek to make the dark a little less frightening," he'll have a "non-traditional cleric deity," working with the Raven Queen, which also makes him something of an outsider. In short, he's after slavers, who have taken various people who can be devotees to the Raven Queen. His group who was on the trail of them were decimated, when it turned out that some of the leaders of the town were a part of the ring, after rescuing some victims, and he was indicated as one of the slavers. Now, he seeks to clear his name, bring down the rings, and rescue those kidnapped.

Since you allow 2 feats, I would pick War Caster & Resilient (Con).

With a proposed 3x/wk, are you looking for some more in-depth posts? I'm on a couple of "daily posts," which tend to be a couple of lines, so would like something that would allow for some good RP'n.

TY for your time.

It was posted yesterday, so I assume it's either an extremely long recruitment period or a typo for Sept 17th.

I would also be interested in this. I'm leaning towards a Sea Elf, either Rogue Swashbuckler or Sorcerer Storm Sorcery subclass

In the second, reserved post I answered the questions that are not specific to a player.

@allstarr
Your character concept is great (though whatever spirit your character follows will not be based on the canonical Raven Queen, but we can discuss this later.)

Character name: Jason Twilight
Class: Twilight Domain Cleric
standard array: Str - 13; Dex - 10; Con - 14; Int - 8; Wis 15; Cha - 12.
Standard Cleric starting gear (or adapted for this campaign).
2 feats: War Caster & Resilient (Con); this would make my con 15.
hp: 10 (I can transfer over my full character sheet, if selected. Just have to make some alterations, from a V. Human to a water genasi.).

To clarify, to you mean this for the Sane Magical Prices document? And are we using Shells in lieu of gold?

Name: Saline Wavecrest
Race: Sea Elf
Class: Sorcerer (Storm Sorcery)
Background: Folk Hero
Saline was born under a tempestuous sky, her first breaths filled with the roar of thunder and the scent of sea spray. As a sea elf hailing from the coastal village of Tidescrest, she learned to dance upon the waves even as a child. Her kin were masters of water magic, but Saline's connection ran deeper—her essence intertwined with the storm itself. The villagers often spoke in hushed tones about an ancient prophecy that foretold a chosen one who would command both ocean and storm; it wasn’t until her sixteenth birthday that they began to believe their whispers might hold truth.

The day arrived when her latent powers erupted dramatically—a fierce squall raged over Tidescrest during an annual festival celebrating the union between land and sea. In that moment of chaos, Saline felt something awaken within her: wild energy surged through her veins as crackling bolts danced around her fingertips, answering some deep-seated calling she had yet to understand fully. While townsfolk fled from tumultuous winds and crashing waves, Saline stood resolute at the shore’s edge, summoning wind gusts strong enough to carry boats safely back into harbor while harnessing lightning just above them for illumination against encroaching darkness. Though hailed as a hero after saving many lives that day, similar reverence became tinged with wariness—there was fear in knowing how closely power walked alongside destruction.

Driven by curiosity about herself beyond mere duty to protect her home, she set off to seek adventures across lands unknown—from sunken ships whispering lost secrets beneath undulating waves to ancient ruins where storms held boundless knowledge waiting patiently for discovery.

If you have any questions, guys, about the setting or the characters, let me know.

The character ideas are fine so far, but I'd like African tribal names for them, since we are going to adventure in a tropical jungle.

Just confirming: you're expecting to make selections around 9/17/2024?
