So this is a terrible idea but I couldn't stop giggling about it after I came up with it, which is basically my benchmark for a character idea. Raindrops on Roses was "raised" by a little girl who read him fairy tales and romance stories exclusively before she left for the city. His whole perspective, language, and thought process is fashioned after fairy tale/romance novel characters so I'm writing everything about him in the most absurd flowery language I think is still comprehensible. Let me know if I go too far off the deep end at some point.

Now, that is an amazing idea, Arundel!

Hi all!
I think we're about ready to get going. I haven't heard from Thebatrastard since 9/12, but their flashlight toad can join us at any time, if they reappear later. I think there are a few backstories still in process, but we can flesh those out as we go. The rules are simple and short. You can read the full original text (all ten sentences!) here. The tl;dr version is something like: you'll tell me what you want to do, I'll tell you what number you need to beat to get it done, you'll roll and resolve. I added a note about languages, here. In short, you can all understand one another even if you're not the same species. I also added an Inspiration-like mechanic called "Blessings of the Witch," detailed here.

One last logistical thing: I added a post to the rules about posting conventions, here.
And with that, the game thread is live and ready for first posts. See you all out there!

That sounds like a good idea . Just to get the ball rolling, I'll speak from Beau's point of view... I'm guessing she was more of an outdoors-y rat, spending most of her days in the garden, so possibly her contact with the others was limited to the evenings? That might've made her a bit of an outsider, if the others spent the daytime together in the cottage (made worse by the fact that Beau is naturally shy).
Also with Ernest and Brijida being basically the predators who would eat her under normal circumstances, I'm assuming she kept het distance from them both out of instinct. Not hostile or anything, just... I think she'd prefer to have the witch around whenever they were in the same room ! Edit: also also, since Raindrops is a rabbit and Beau a gardener, I can't help of picturing a scenario where Raindrops might've tried to sample some of Beau's carrots ahead of harvesting time, much to the rat's dismay :P. I don't think Beau would've been angry with Raindrops, more shocked at the attempt. But I'd be happy to change or forget about that idea if you don't like it ! Hmmm, I picture Brie as a very lazy rat while the witch lived. He stayed mostly indoors and was content to sleep, eat, listen to the witch‘s stories, sleep again, eat some more etc.. Just like Beau, it took him some considerable time warming up to the larger animals, but once he did so he considered them „siblings“ of sorts and the witch their mother.
After the witch‘s demise he has reverted back to his old habits. He was sly and secretive before and now that his protector is no more seeks to become sly and secretive once more (like a typical „rogue“ to match his spell). Now however he is also thirsty for the blood of the witch-hunter and eager to see justice restored, which might surprise the other animals who weren’t aware of his darker side. One thing he sees as weakness in the others (just to create some interesting conflict) is their desire to remain clean. He often covers himself in mud and filth, considering it good for his skin and fur, not to mention a camouflage of sorts, and stayed clean only because the witch asked him to.

Awesome!
I'd say Brijida was a mix of both. She would spend the first hour of the early early morning inside getting the fire and stove going (because of spell) and would do quick dusting chores before stepping out and running into the yard to chase the chickens around foe fun (i imagine they grew to expect this and knew she wouldnt harm them). All this before chasing wild mice and running off into the woods to feed and then play with her wilder friends here and there. All depending on the Witch's needs. Towards evening she would return and help to prep for nightfall. Lighting flames as needed and listening to stories. I imagine she would try to snuggle with whomever else aside from Abigail would let her.

I imagined that Raindrops would be a newer addition the to group. I don't think that he would have made many close friendships yet or possibly ever. Its not some edge lord nonsense though, I think with a whole worldview coming from badly written fairy tales/romance novels he wouldn't understand the mechanics of friendship. I think the he would consider the other familiars friends because they aren't protagonists (before now of course) or antagonists. The only other characters in those types of stories are wise mentors or stalwart lifelong friends. So I don't think he currently understands that friendships are relationships, they take work and develop.
I would also imagine that the other familiars might not be his biggest fan. Both his casual (and accidental) disregard of them as secondary characters and overly verbose mann using too many unnecessary words are unlikely to be endearing at this point. Also, Raindrops has the ability to open/close and lock/unlock doors because he insisted to Abigail that it was a gentleman's duty to open doors for a lady. She thought it was cute and granted him the ability to do it for her. Man, it is hard to jump to speaking like a human after the thesaurus factory that is Raindrops. I keep wanting to use the most ridiculous types of words. Last edited by Arundel val Estar; Sep 27th, 2020 at 05:34 PM. |
