Chapter One - Shadow In The Sky

It was a well advertised affair; you had to give him that. Everyone in Riddleport knew about the Gold Goblin's special event, Cheat the Devil and Take His Gold. Saul Vancaskerkin's attempt to return to old gambling den to its days of glory, and turn a nice profit. How he'd gotten the money to be able to buy the place and put on this tournament was anyone's guess, and given the nature of the town no one was really interested in guessing. Those who attended had their own reasons, anywhere from less savory intentions to good old fashioned Gambler's Greed, but no matter their plans for the evening the entry process, and most important the entry fee, was the same for everyone.

The Gold Goblin lived up to its name, certainly. The first thing you saw upon entry to the gambling hall was a gleaming golden statue of a goblin, looking over those milling about and waiting for their turn to file into the hall itself, a broad and particularly satisfied looking smirk crafted into its face. Most importantly, the Goblin was overlooking the sign in table.

Just inside the doors two sultry and voluptuous women, scantily clad in an outfit meant to replicate a pair of succubi, with small decorative bat wings, devil horns, and stiff faux devil tails, are running the sign in table, offering out contracts and taking the entry fee to drop into a large chest behind them. On either side of the chest stand two burly armed guards, defending both the money and the women from anyone who thought they had quick fingers.

As people file past the table they are handed a contact;

Beyond the registration table is the hall’s game floor. Dozens of gamblers, waitresses dressed as succubi, and bouncers mill about the room, wandering amid tables offering various games while dealers shuffle cards, roll dice, and spin wheels. Moving through this throng are a dozen more of the barely clad, batwinged vixens serving drinks and batting coal-black eyelashes flirtatiously for tips. In the center of the chamber is a short podium atop which sits a massive gold chest affixed to the floor by similarly gaudy chains. On either side of it stands a barechested bouncer in the exotic garb of some foreign sultan’s court. Each stands with muscled arms crossed over his chest and with a naked scimitar of prodigious size tucked through his waistband. High above them, from the hall’s cloth-draped
ceiling, hangs a brass birdcage within which crouches a small, bat-winged, pointy-tailed devilish creature that sulks as it gazes over the room and occasionally rattles the bars threateningly.

Ashe made her way through the masses outside of the Gold Goblin and waited in line to pay her 10 silver entry fee. She handed said fee to one of the "devils" at the table when the line had moved enough and signed "Ashe", named for what a few of the townspeople had called her when she was still living in this rathole of a city. It was better than "Hey, kid!" and so she used it. Ashe liked to think it was affectionate, simply because it was easier to think that than the alternative. She toyed with the idea of adding "Soot" or "Charcoal" as a last name, but decided against it. Best not to have any more of those insults than necessary following her around on paper.

As she made her way inside, Ashe tried to spot a familiar face in the crowd. She had only attended because of an acquaintance who would be joining and she didn't particularly want to sit and wait.

Marroar was surprised to see just how much attention the den had attracted. He's seen his fair share of sleazy back-alley gambling but he'd never had the money to throw away in such a place. He'd never been much of a gambler, his family always needing the funds, never letting greed overtake his own priorities. But it seemed, for now, that his family could fend for themselves, two of his siblings having come of age and already working in his absence, one even taking his old position at the tavern. He was sore about that, but that was the least of his concerns as he was swept up in the mass of people, pushing and shoving him toward the den in their haste to lose their savings.

This wasn't the first time in this gambler's den, but it was the first time he'd gone in with the prospect of spending money as opposed to making it through honest work. The constant pushing upon him was quickly becoming aggravating, but he managed to get to the table without incident. He could barely hear the woman over the crowd of people, but the contract explained more than enough. He skimmed it over quickly, though he didn't have time to read it in-depth as the rowdy customers behind him were growing restless. He signed his name in his typical untidy scrawl and handed the contract back along with a single gold piece before getting out of there, certain that someone is going to get trampled eventually.

Marroar double-checked his money. He didn't have much, only 9 gold coins, and he planned to spend them wisely.

(I hope this post is good enough. My very first!)

Affyria rose, as usual, with the sun. The pale gray light reflected off the water of the docks, shining weakly through gaps in the warehouse wall, casting thin tendrils of luminance across the woman curled against the crates. The Tiefling wrapped her tail tighter around her legs and cradled a flask of lukewarm coffee, listening to the slamming of cargo and shouting of dockworkers just outside.

With one last sip and a roll of her shoulders, she snapped the flask shut and hooked it to her belt, pushing herself to her feet so she could wrap her bedroll and blanket back up and store them away under the loose floorboards with the rest of her possessions (everything that wasn't strapped to her, essentially).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Of course she'd heard about the tournament that was going on later that day at the Gold Goblin, they'd hardly kept quiet about it. Affyria wasn't a gambler by any means; she loathed to leave anything to chance, especially when gold was involved, but work had been slow on the docks lately and she'd heard the Gold Goblin might be hiring sometime in the future, so she was looking for another, hopefully more reliable, source of income.

Affyria wasn't sure what exactly she'd expected to find when she got to the gambling den, but the sheer amount of people that had gathered came as a surprise. Tail tucked into her pants and hair fluffed up around her horns, she ducked and weaved through the throng to get into the main hall. The statue that overlooked the sign-in table was spared a glance, but her focus was mostly on the women standing at the table. Humans, she sighed to herself. Humans and their entirely tasteless choice of attire.

The contract that was offered to her was given a quick scan and a hesitant grimace, but she signed in her messy scratch of a font and handed it back with the entry fee, offering a thin smile to the "succubus" before making her way further into the building. The scene she was met with was more than a bit overwhelming, so she found a corner of the room to stand and take in the whole fiasco, deciding where to start. A loud rattle from somewhere above her caught her attention, drawing her eyes to the creature in the cage, whom she watched with increasing interest for a few long moments, before grinning tauntingly at it, pupils lengthening horizontally with the movement, revealing her nature despite the admittedly flimsy attempt at appearing human.

*Oops, that's a bit long. The bit above the line's not important, I just like writing 'waking up' scenes.*

The crowd continues to file in slowly past the registration boost, letting individuals past the guards and into the grand hall, currently filled with people of various states of arms and armament, some involved in grand arguments, some letting raising cheers of victory or defeat, and even a brief brawl breaks out over one of the tables before the guards break them apart and force them out for causing trouble. The wide room is carpeted in rich red shades, with silken banners hanging along the walls. The ceiling above is hidden from view by draped layers of gauzy beige fabric, and large grand windows look out into the afternoon light. Chandeliers hang a safe distance from the hanging fabric ceiling, and along the walls stand bold copper braziers filled with live coals, casting a red hellish light over everything. Along one of the back walls stands a small shrine to Desna, goddess of luck, with small piles of coins surrounding her and some spilling off onto the floor, more are added as offering by some gamblers each time they pass.

As people file in and twilight begins to fall through the game hall's windows the doors along the side open, and filing through them and down the stairs are several sinisterly dressed employees, carrying torches shaped like pitchforks skewering burning heads made of straw and cloth to light several large braziers, giving the hall a more infernal hue. A hush falls over the gathered crowd as a short man climbs to the central podium, accompanied by two gorgeous “succubi,” and stands before the gold, chain-shrouded chest there with a demoness on either side. He wears a formal suit, and his thinning black hair is slicked back. His left arm ends in a stump just above the wrist, and affixed to it is a bronze cap from which protrudes an oddly shaped key. This is Saul Vancaskerkin, the owner of the Gold Goblin and host of the tournament. He bows before the crowd and clears his throat before speaking.

"Welcome, one and all, to the Gold Goblin Gambling Hall and your chance to cheat the Devil and win back not only your soul but all of his gold as well." He says this last as he pats the large chest before which he stands. "I hope you found your reception by the Devil’s lovely temptresses suitably entertaining." This is met by a general murmur of laughter and a few catcalls. "Let’s take this moment to thank Old Scratch himself for attending this event. Not only did he loan us these lovely, dark angels, but he also emptied the deepest vaults of Hell itself to provide the gold for this tournament." With this, Saul directs the crowd’s attention up to the imp in the birdcage. At the sudden attention, Old Scratch flies into a flurry of rage, banging the cage bars, spitting, howling, and screaming vile epithets in Infernal at all assembled. His theatrics are received with guffaws and even a smattering of applause. As the crowd dies down, Vancaskerkin continues.

"Of course, he plans on replacing what he loses in gold with the souls of those of you who don’t win. The tournament rules are quite simple—as you play, you’ll earn more chips. And with those chips, you’ll be able to bribe your way out of the current Hell you’re trapped in, working your way down deeper until you get to Old Scratch’s treasury. Currently, all of you are Old Scratch’s prisoners in the first of the Hells, Avernus. If you want to work your way down to the ninth circle, you need to win games. Each time you win, you’ll be awarded a golden eye. If you come in second, you’ll get a silver tooth. And third place wins a copper heart. These bits of flesh and bone are what the devils use in Hell for currency, and they’re what you’ll need to pay in order to bribe your way into the next layer of hell. The first player to win a game after reaching Nessus not only keeps his winnings for that game, but also earns back his soul and the ten thousand silver coins that the Devil put up for this tournament. You can, of course, decide to cash out your winnings at any time you want, but if you do, or if you run out of money entirely… well, that means Old Scratch gets you." Vancaskerkin grins evilly and the caged imp cuts loose with another profane tirade. "And that earns you the Devil’s Mark and an escort out of the game hall until the tournament is over. What, you ask, exactly is this Devil’s Mark? Well, it’s something too utterly horrible to even contemplate. The forfeiture of your very soul, it is. But I suppose I can show you what it is— gods know I more than deserve the Devil’s Mark. In fact, better make it two, girls!" With that, the two succubi accompanying him lean over and each firmly plants a kiss on Saul’s cheek with her ruby-red lips. When they pull away, their lip rouge has left clearly visible prints in the same shocking red on his cheeks. Saul beams as he cries out, "The Devil’s Mark, everyone!" which is greeted by a flurry of shouts, catcalls, and hoots. "Now, let’s cheat the Devil and take his gold!" which prompts one more rabid flurry from the imprisoned fiend above, and with that, the tournament begins.

Dozens of gaming tables take up most of the floor, with "succubi" wandering amongst the crowd with offerings of drinks and food, and burly shirtless bouncers making random patrols to break up potential fights and stop anyone who thought they could cheat the establishment. There are two games that the Gold Goblin is the most well known for;

Games

Though other games litter the floor and are available for play.

If you wish to play a game listed you are free to do so, and I will post for all individuals currently playing, otherwise you're free to gloss over gambling in your post and include the amount you bet (which must be over 1 silver) and make either a Charisma check or a Profession (Gambler) check. (Either a 1d20+[Charisma Modifier] or a 1d20+[Profession (Gambler) modifier). Do whatever you wish, so long as you have fun with it!

It was nice to get away from the rabble trying to get in, already having seen at least two get thrown out for being unable to pay the entry fee by the time he'd gotten his bearings and finally decided upon a table to gamble at. The half-orc sat down at the Bounder table. He'd heard snippets of information about the game over the years but had never actually played a round of it. The dealer's summary of the rules and gameplay likely the most formal teaching of Bounder he'd ever had.

He started small, wagering a single gold piece before taking a single die and rolling it upon the table. (http://www.rpgcrossing.com/showthrea...00#post5613500)

Marroar was confident, but he tried not to show it. Being confident was one thing but he hadn't won just yet. He looked up at the dealer somewhat impatiently and awaited their roll.

Ashe watched as the illustrious Saul Vancaskerkin addressed the crowd, noting the imp in the birdcage with some interest. Even an outlier like Ashe would know who he was, given his recent popularity and it must have taken some work, if not a lot of convincing to get that imp into the cage. She might have tried to understand what "Old Scratch" was saying, but in this context, it was easy enough to assume that it wasn't good.

Unable to spot her acquaintance, Ashe decided to have a seat at one of the gambling tables, hoping that her acquaintance would see her while making the rounds. She greeted both the dealer and an intimidating looking half-orc with a nod of her head before placing her own gold coin onto the table. After ascertaining that it was a Bounder table and learning how exactly to play, Ashe rolled her first die. (http://www.rpgcrossing.com/showthrea...15#post5619815)

While it didn't seem likely that she would win, it was equally less likely that she would lose her stake. At this point, Ashe was just wasting time, anyway.

Bounder Dealer Orina
Half-Elf
Rolling for Marroar and Ashe
Dice

"Welcome, welcome! Think you can cheat the devil? Well we’ll just see about that." The dealer at the table welcomed Marroar and Ashe as they sat down, a wink of her heavily made-up eyes, instructions for the game were explained to those who didn’t know what they were doing, and dice were handed to the players to roll.

The dealer raised her eyebrows at the rolls that came up from the table, shaking her own dice cup even as she continued speaking. "Lucky numbers, lucky numbers! But do you think they’re lucky enough to save your soul?" She teased, tossing her own dice down. As they settled down into a one and two threes, already a man at the table was swearing as she took his gold piece and pocketed it with the rest. "Tough break you poor lost soul, another round perhaps? Anyone else think they can walk away with some gold?" She looked to the table, waiting for the rest of the rolls to come up.

Marroar smiled as his die came to a stop upon the table. He wasn't expecting to win his first game, and although he regretted not doubling his bet when he had the chance, he was glad to be up some gold rather than down. He graciously accepted the extra gold piece before immediately slipping the two coins into his pocket. One fortunate thing about having little money is that storing it was never a challenge. He looked around at the other tables, curious as to how the other patrons were doing. Or rather, how much better he was doing than them.

"A shame your winnings will be gone by the day's end," Ashe said to her tablemate before rolling another die of her own. It was a loss.

She shifted in her seat, looking around again for her acquaintance, before saying, "I'll have another go. If I leave with a single copper piece in my pocket, I'll have been cheated out of the ten silver it took to get in here." Grumbling, she put a more modest 50 silver on the table and rolled again.

Victor's shot rang out in the crisp morning air. Best be moving along quickly, he thought to himself. The man he had just killed had been trying to rob him, and he was fairly certain he was far enough outside town so as to not be heard by anyone, guards or otherwise, but it always paid off to play it smart. Not that he had done anything wrong of course, he just preferred to avoid having to explain himself, and he had reason to keep his identity secret until he got a feel for the lay of the land. He was quite confident his reputation had not reached this far from his usual haunts, but stories could travel faster and further than the best horse and had a way of reaching places they shouldn't.

He gave a quick grin to himself and holstered his pistol with a flourish, conducted a quick search of the body (finding nothing of interest, poor sod), and continued down the path. He had expected trouble in this town but he had not expected to encounter any until actually inside the city. That he was proven wrong was a pleasant surprise, he did enjoy a challenge. He had heard that a former pirate captain, Gaston Cromarcky, had brought in a modicum of stability to the city, but it seemed he did have his limits. As a vigilante of sorts, Victor hoped to help the city be rid of the crime lurking beyond those limits.

After walking for another hour or so, Victor reached the city through the eastern mountain pass. It was one of the larger cities he had been to, but not near as impressive a sight as most large cities. It seemed more of an unusually large, haphazard scattering of buildings than a planned city. Which was just as well; these sort of cities often held much more life than the alternative. As he began making his way down the winding streets of Riddleport, the first thing he noticed was the flyers. There seemed to be flyers for a gambling tournament everywhere as well as said tournament being the talk of almost everyone in town. Sounds like a fantastic place to start, he gave himself another wide grin and began making his way towards the gambling hall.

Affyria stood well off on the sidelines for several long minutes after Vancaskerkin's introduction, eyes flickering constantly over the game floor, deciding where to go from here. While she would like to think she looked cool and calculating, leaning up against the far wall, she probably just looked overwhelmed and a bit more nervous than she would ever like to admit.

Well, gotta start somewhere. She closed her eyes and rotated to the right, and when she opened them, the first thing her eyes fell on was the Bounder table, so that was where she went. Incredibly unreliable decision-making solution, but it had its moments.

The Tiefling took a seat at the table, smiling companionably at the other players. Though she'd missed the explanation of the rules, she'd played the game a time or two in her years and felt confident that she remembered well enough. She pulled a gold coin from the pouch at her hip and placed it on the table, tossing her die past it. http://www.rpgcrossing.com/showthrea...43#post5651543

Bounder Dealer Orina

Rolling for Marroar, Ashe, and Affiryia
Dealers Roll:
Dice Dealer Orina:
3d6 1, 3, 3 Total = 7

Orina smiled welcomingly at Marroar as the dice settled, "Well don't we have a winner!" She cleared the table and offered a winning golden eye out to the half-orc with a sly smile, "It'll take more than just that to get back your soul though! Old Scratch is quite demanding!" However the man doesn't seem interested in playing any further, so she turns her attention to the strange elf woman and the ruffled looking girl that had settled at the table.

The Half-elf was relatively pleased about the business going on at her table, "Well it's certainly a start isn't it?" She offered to Ashe's roll of four and then raised an eyebrow at Affiryia as the woman tossed her own dice out onto the table, "Now if only you had the same luck to get out of hell, my dear." she smiled at the woman and tossed down her own dice with smooth confidence. "A seven it is my dears, and how will we be proceeding?"

Over at the entrance a particular commotion comes about from the man with the suspicious firearm, a thing not often seen inside the halls of the rundown establishment. Some discussion is had and eventually the latecomer Victor is allowed to enter so long as he can sign the contract and pay the entry fee, but that doesn't mean there isn't a bouncer watching him everywhere he goes, having already raised suspicion as a possible troublemaker. Still, he is allowed to gamble as he chooses.

OOC
Alright let's get this thing rolling and if I need another player I can always pick one up. Ashe and Affiryia can opt to double the rolls and then roll again, and if you could all do me a favor and make use of the tooltip code to simple write your numbers into the post or roll directly in your post that would be lovely and not crowd everything up with awkward links.

Victor you can either find a game to join or make a Charisma check at your discretion.

And as always, just because I don't directly ask you for a roll doesn't mean that one can't be made if you want to or feel a need.

Late for the start of the great gambling event due to being on the north side of Riddleport when it began, Bartholomew was through the doors in time to hear what he could of Vancaskerkin's announcement, shouted down as it was by the raucous noise of the already drunk and those whose drunkenness was making good progress. He himself though was doing no gambling, and indeed, and to the loud irritation of men behind him, the man was still standing at the entry table, looking politely concerned for the scantily clad women.

"Though you all joke of it, do you never worry what those greater than us might think of your decisions to mock them? This is not necessary to turn a coin when honest business exists," he insisted to them.

Affyria gave a thin smile in response to the dealer’s comment and spared a brief glance at the other players seated at the table, the dark skinned girl in particular. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d seen a half-drow in Riddleport. A curious thing, she thought, to see one in such a populated space. The half-orc wasn’t quite as uncommon, but his luck was to be commended if he had already won his first game.

The tiefling drew her gaze back to the dice, tapping one claw rhythmically against the edge of the table. She considered the numbers, and the already limited funds weighting her pouch, and decided to take a chance. “I’ll double.” she declared with a small nod to the dealer. She grabbed another dice and sent it rolling, wincing slightly as it stopped on seven. With a small grumble, she fished another gold piece out of her pouch and slapped it down on the table. She'd never been the best gambler when it came to money.
