Hilen

"Oh, I don't think it's a question of academic interest, Mister Pembrook, but instead friction from differing paradigms," Hilen tried to explain with a smile that was present but not particularly committed to. After all, she acutely knew where her partner was coming from, and while she could see what Pembrook meant, well. "After all, the topic of ownership, such as owning a business with an employees, owning money, owning people, well. It gets interesting when taken from the perspective of someone that has been owned, doesn't it?" A rhetorical question, which was made obvious by the slight tensing of Hilen's jaw.

"A map of the surrounding area outside the city might be useful as well, along with whatever you can give us about the political structuring and current state of affairs in the city?" Hilen asked, staring at the bureaucrat hard enough to force him to look at her. That he was actually being useful was a nice bit of change, not that her face showed it. Lytta's almost certainly did though. "Additionally, is there any way to get what previous winners have requested? Or information about what they did with the transition and where they are now?" How many of them were the same wage-bound slaves that Pembrook here was so fond of, she had to wonder. But again, kept it to herself.

"Additionally, is there any place for us to access more formalized information? Any libraries that we might have access to, for instance. And in the upcoming get together, who are the various people we likely to meet, what do they do, and why might we be of interest to them?"

You had seen it for a bit now. It seemed like a trick of the light or motion at first, but now, as Hilen spoke you could see for sure that something was odd around Pembrook's head. It looked sort of like a heat mirage, and indeed as Hilen continued to speak his hair slowly began to glow with a dull orange light. In the middle of her speaking, he closes his eyes and his breathing becomes more deliberate and you can clearly see tension in his arms. His frame, which you first brushed off as pudgy, seems to actually be made up of many lumps...revealed only because of the undulating of them beneath his clothing.

When Hilen was quiet Pembrook takes a few more breaths and his hair begins to darken slightly. He opens his eyes and something dark and hard swims across them for a moment. Firstly, he holds up a single finger to articulate his point, I would like to inform you that in the eyes of the law and rules of the festival, my obligation as transition counselor has been met and then some. So I may end this session at any time I choose. I tell you this first because you have insulted me by implication. You see, my family has worked in the mines since their discovery. His eyes flash to Lytta before looking away again. I'm sure you are thinking that they have had lofty positions, but my grandfather is actually the first to make Overseer, and thanks to his hard work my father was able to finally become part owner only a few tenturns ago. His eyes flash to Hilen for a moment. I have one sibling that works in the lowest position of the mines in order to gain the necessary knowledge and experience in order to hopefully one day be able to take over and increase my father's ownership stake. Pembrook places both hands on the desk and pushes himself to his feet, leaning over and a soft hiss can be heard from where his hands meet the desk. So be careful when you brush off mine work as beneath free people, lest you hurt those that desire to help you. His upper lip twitches slightly and his hair flares white-hot for a moment. Additionally, I have missed out on multiple parts of the festival in order to perform this task for you two. Work that I am not paid for, that indeed I volunteered for out of a desire to see things done well. He takes a steadying breath and eases himself back into his chair. We owe our lives to the miners, for they brave the wild caverns to plumb the heart of fire itself for us. Much of your equipment is powered by corestone it appears, so rethink such attitudes.

Pembrook sniffs disdainfully and there is silence for a time. When he continues, there is more detachment in his voice than before and you get the sense that your time and questions are limited now. Obviously maps of the areas outside the sanctuaries are proprietary. Paths to and from active mines are worth a fortune and other than the paths through central no other passages between sanctuaries are allowed. Contact a mining guild if you would like to continue pursuing such information. The political structure is...stable. There are no real movements currently, Earl Linnorm and her council have maintained peace and steady trade with the other sanctuaries. It's been a generation since the last conflict. As to what previous winners have done, such information is private and even had I access I could not share it without their permission. You could potentially make a request at the Hall of Memories, but without special dispensation, such things take time as the proper approvals and releases have to be secured. Bards will always talk and generally have the most up to date information though it tends to be exaggerated, and unless you intend to enroll in one of the schools, which costs I might point out, access to the libraries also requires requests or special permission.

As he spoke his hard cooled and he rubs his forehead a bit. The party is just that, a party. Keep watch over your drinks, agree to nothing tonight....especially don't sign anything, and be personable.
You never know who you will meet at these things because everyone is there, and as new celebrities, you will be the focus of attention.
He looks at you both for a moment and sighs, Just be open when you don't know something and keep things light. The impression you make tonight could determine how your whole future will go. Alienate or offend someone tonight and you could find many doors closed to you tomorrow. He frowns and rubs his hands over the burned prints he left earlier.

Hilen

"The intent is by no means to brush off anyone," Hilen calmly pointed out, not backing down but also not trying to pick a fight. "If anything, your implication that there does exist work beneath free people is what Lytta was getting at, to some degree. Because as we all know, the unfree aren't people. Not really. After all, some choose to mine corestone and reap the respect and benefits that can bring. Many others have no such choice - indeed, they do not even receive the same benefits. And that is hardly restricted to the career of miners, now is it?" She glanced over to her partner, appraising her before turning back. "To be forced to do anything is a vile situation to be in. To then watch others, typically those that forced you to begin with, enjoy the fruits of your labor is that much worse." After a moment, Hilen waved the words away. Either Pembrook would have the empathy required to understand, or he wouldn't. Either way, it mattered little to her right now.

At the information of the party, she absorbed it and was largely unchanged. This was within expectations, even if going in blind because it 'is just that, a party' was less than perfect. You worked with the tools you had at hand though, she figured, and inclined her head. "Thank you for the information and thank you for the work. I hope you enjoy the festivities." Indeed, nothing like enjoying the sight of slaves slaughtering each other to kick off events, but Hilen did not let her feelings show on her face. Blood was the grease that slicked the most gears, as had always been the case. Being petulant about it now, this early on, would see her crushed between those gears before she had the opportunity to change anything. And change them she would.

They would, she amended, smiling at Lytta. She raised her arm once more, ready to escort the piscine woman to the party.
