This could have happened during Pilgrim's epic battle. The battle could have ranged over part of a small town, taking out hundreds of innocent civilians in the process. Our distraught group decided to give up and passed our legacy items to a new group of adventurers. The new group became famous, then mysteriously disappeared. Now, Barrett has found a clue to their whereabouts. |

Insofar as what happened to the legacy items, I like Huhart's option the most so far. Also, these friends that you would have passed them on to might give you the motivation you need to get thrust back into adventuring if they were friends in any capacity. Thoughts?

I agree with Huhart's idea, but I would also like to add a twist on it. Perhaps these new adventurers were a group we had "taken under our wing", Youngers who knew of our fame, and instead of just giving them the weapons when we left (which should be some what suddenly IE: Dropped off the the face of the planet) we actually planted them so they could find them like true adventurers.
Of course some of us (I know Kai would keep an ear out) would be following them for a time, but when the bards stopped singing their praise, and no new adventuring group sprung up in their place suspicions arose for a time, and before long some of us actually began looking for information on our previous proteges. It just happens that Barrett was the one who managed to find the clue. That would give us an emotional attachment (at least at some level)

I like it.
I know I wrote about a friend in my app (the one I was getting drunk with). She could easily be my little protege. |

Sounds like a really good idea to me.

It sounds good to me and everyone else likes it, so lets go with that. Do we need to write up on our proteges?

As far as "writing up your proteges" is concerned, let's have everyone give me a race/class combo and assume they were lv. 2 when you left them. You're not exactly sure of their class now that you've been away, but you will have heard of their exploits a bit. I'll take care of that part.

Hmm, I think Teretha would have been a half-elf ranger, with a lot of personality in common with Dawn.

I think my successor should be an iredar kobold sorcerer, lol. Kassic accidentally led some outsiders to the warren and the resulting invasion caused him to be exiled. He is friendly to most, though is at best civil towards Durkon. There is some question about whether the old racial emnity will lead to one of them leaving the group one day, or whether they will work through it, recognize each other's mutual respect of hard work, mining, and community, and become good friends.

Just something else to think about: In Roc's background, I said that the reason he left the group was because he had finally become powerful enough that (he supposed) he might overthrow his wrangler and take his freedom by force, but at the moment of decision he found that he couldn't kill her.
What if Roc's attempted betrayal was actually a momentary change of allegiance? The group faced off with the Nalfeshnee and its subordinates, and one of the succubi convinced him (in secret, perhaps over a period of weeks) that he would be rewarded if he switched sides. The group discovered his betrayal at the start of the battle, and in his shame he fought on the side of the heroes to redeem himself. They won the battle, but at great cost, and Roc's betrayal put the proverbial nail in the coffin, so to speak; that it wasn't merely the group's lives, but their very souls that were at stake. And I've decided that Roc's protege was a Talenta halfling paladin named Lily, who was so young that her "holy" nature was almost entirely a result of her innocence. Roc was drawn to her mostly out of curiosity, but his protective instinct made him pass on his legacy weapon to her when he fell from grace, in the hopes that she would make better use of it than he had done. That would give Roc a real incentive to return to the group, especially if the group - or at least Dawn - could forgive him for his transgressions. |

Cuz we all know, Dawn is too cute to kill.
Er....yeah.... I can definitely see something like that seriously affecting Dawn's bounce-back ability. It would definitely be hard to smile and laugh it off. And it'd lead to all sorts of juicy conflicting emotions. On the one hand, she's got to be a little wary, because she was burned once; but on the other hand, Roc's her friend, she's always gotten along with and respected him, you've got to forgive and forget. |
