"Jack of All Games and Master of None" - some druid
rather new to TTRPGs, i want to say that i got into them 2 years ago now. my very first game was V:tM through the Humble Bundle, and this was after discovering that you could play these games solo ( thank you, Ginny Di ) ! but i'm not new to text-based roleplaying and have done that for over a decade now, if not incredibly longer. recently, i've been branching out from solo games. played through 2 one-shots of voice chat DnD over Discord with a few friends --- still don't know DnD's rules, but joined because they picked up a supplement and wanted me to try it. overall, very fun experiences ! and before i got into TTRPGs, i did play one PbP game over on Discord, either Pathfinder 1e or 2e, i'm not sure. in fact, i thought we were gonna play DnD at the time through miscommunication, but to my surprise, everyone kept talking about Pathfinder in the chat, so . . . that was also a fun experience but i got overwhelmed with life and trying to figure out what was going on with the game as i had no interest in TTRPGs and the rules ( besides V:tM which no one ever wants to play ) at the time. now, i feel like i'm ready to dive back in again and give it a proper try ! for my games, i prefer apocalyptic games ( gimme zombies or Fallout, please ) and games with an emphasis on characters. in fact, you can have a poopoo story ( or none at all ) and i will still love you if you give me interesting characters to connect with and have fun ! i'm also down with playing multiple characters ! i think that could be fun ( tho i don't know if that's the norm ). i'll even play a slice-of-life Harvest Moon or The Office type of game. picked up Social Encounters for GURPS JUST for that in my solo games, to be honest. i'm not big into combat though and would prefer to wave it away unless it'll have some impact on the story. i LOVE V:tM's 3 round rule. with that said, i can have a busy schedule that's erratic. i am in school full time including summer classes and handling irl stuff. but i try to respond at least once a day, if not every other day. and i do have a lot of other hobbies ( art, gaming, writing, solo ttrpgs, regular rps, etc ), and i'm not quite sure where PbP would rank in terms of my hobbies just yet. for games that i'm interested in, i have quite a few. my library has expanded to an abnormal level to feed my solo TTRPG addiction. i own everything from GURPS and Walking Dead Universe RPG to Genesys and Twilight 2k. sadly, while i know it's the most popular, i do not own or really have an interest in DnD. i do own Pathfinder 2e, and while i overall like it, it's definitely far my favorite game. the issue: having a lot of games means that i'm not up to par with all of the rules. not really necessary when playing solo haha, so i'll have to refresh and look over my notes. feel free to correct me if i make any mistakes ! and yeah, i think that's about it ? can't wait to jump in and see all that this wonderful site has to offer ! ヾ(˶ᵔ ᗜ ᵔ˶) |

Welcome! Cool to see another solo-rpg'er but beware: since I really got started here I struggle to keep time for solo!
Nice to see some love for GURPS too, I just bought the basis set in the recent promo (I already had some supplements). To get used to this place, I'd advise the New Player Solo Game. It's not a real solo but a 1-on-1 with a GM to guide you through all the forum peculiarities. And/or hit the Games Seeking Players subforum to see whether there's any offer to your liking. Hoep to see you in some games soon. |

Howdy picotan,
Great introduction. You covered a lot of ground there and answered many of the questions I usually ask. So, here is what I have for you. As an introduction, I'm a D&D 5e player, but I also love L5R, King Arthur Pendragon, GURPS, and RuneQuest. There are a lot of choices for various RPG systems here, although PF and D&D are the two most common. We have quite a few games with very long legs here. In fact, I talk about one below. To start, you may want to check out a solo game. This will help you learn the site tools, since each site is a bit different. As far as finding games goes, try here. This is where there are games seeking players. It can be a bit daunting but don't give up. It may take a few applications before you get accepted...but it's worth it once you're in. This is a great place to scratch your RPG itch and interact with some great DMs and players. There is some incredible role playing going on here. I thought I was a pretty good story teller, but I have been put to shame by the quality of many of the players...and I have learned a lot. This is a place where the people are welcoming, where the games are interesting, and where generally they only expect you to post a few times a week. I've been playing D&D for a very long time and I thought I've seen it all, but this site has some amazing games going on. I've been playing (storytelling as much as rolling) for a few years now in a game that has been going on continuously for four decades, started tabletop and moved online two decades ago. It's set in an alternate Europe where the worlds of Tolkien and Howard existed in ages past. So there is a hint of LOTR and a hint of Conan in it and since it's set in an alt Europe it somehow feels familiar. This is just one example and there are other great campaigns on RPGX. You should take some time to "stroll around" the site and see if anything catches your eye. I hope to see you around on the boards.

Welcome, picotan! And thanks for bringing all of your roleplaying experiences with you! I'm also a fan of all things zombie and post-apocalypse. And GURPS is awesome ! I hope you enjoy the site!

Welcome!
Not sure if the game was pathfinder 1e or 2e? Well, was it AWESOME? Then it was 1e. Pathfinder IS DnD, now... what passes for old school, mostly. There are some who still truck in even older versions, though... more power to the old ones! Glad you joined us, hope you enjoy it here. Happy gaming!

is that how it works ?! XDXD i wish i remembered. we didn't use too many game mechanics, so it's hard for me to remember even though i own 2e . . . in fact, we only ever rolled the dice on occasion for actions and for combat, and we had no abilities. TT _ TT ) but i still had a lot of fun with it ! |

A jack of all games is a master of none, but often is better than a master of one!
Have any good recs for solo games? I don't have a lot of irl friends to play games with (which is, naturally, how I ended up on this forum), and I'm super intrigued by the idea of playing one all on my own. If you're into video games AND ttrpgs, may I recommend some Owlcat games? They're a little expensive by my standards, but they're built on systems like Pathfinder (Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous, the former of which I haven't tried yet but I ADORE wotr) and Warhammer (Rogue Trader, which might be to your taste if you like a downer apocalypse feel) and a ton of fun if you don't mind sinking 80-120 hours on one playthrough. But that's just Tuesday for an rpg, right? Hope you enjoy the site!

besides journaling games ( my favorite being Bloom over on itchio - uses a card mechanic and is horror-esque ), i prefer to use a GM oracle such as Mythic GME 2e or the One Page Solo Engine ( free ) to play the ttrpgs that i already own. the Oracles act as the GM, and i ask it questions to fill out a scene and determine what i can and can't do. it's bit more work, but so fun, and it really gets my creative juices goin'. Ginny Di over on YT has a great video on it, and there are also a TON of YTers in the solo ttrpg genre over on there too ! this way i can justify my ttrpg purchases haha. but some games like The Walking Dead Universe and Twilight 2k actually come with solo rules which is nice and convenient ! and as for Owlcat, i own Wrath of the Righteous ! but i haven't sat down and actually played it. ; ^ ; ) it's on my list to do, and i dabbled in it a bit, but i want to dedicate my time to it so i'm starting over. i think you can even import your own character card art ?? and i wanted to see about doing that instead of using the premade one haha but thanks for the info on Warhammer Rogue Trader ! i've always been intimidated by that series for some reason, so i've never really looked into it ! |

Oooo, thank you for the info! I've been in a bit of a writing rut lately, maybe checking out some of these will help me get my mojo back. Hm, if you're pressed for time, I'd recommend going for Rogue Trader first. My first run of that game was a good 40 hours shorter than my first run of wotr. And afaik, all Owlcat games let you import your own portraits, as long as they're the right dimensions. Plenty of rp fun to be had! Warhammer has a LOT of content out there, but their games tend to be pretty accessible for newbies to the lore.

Hi, picotan! Welcome to the site! What a great introduction. Tell me, who do you recommend for Solo RPG vlogs? I’ve watched and liked several from Geek Gamers. Do you have any other favs?

i mostly play on PC tho, so i'm currently limited by what they have. i am excited to see that they're porting more of the games over ! i don't know why i never picked them up before because i own a DS and 3DS . . . but here's my chance ! i now know that Dahlia is your favorite character, but which Chronicle is your favorite. or i guess which game ? i hope they'll get you that writing mojo back !! <3 <3 ooo ! i'll keep that in mind for when i pick up Rogue Trader ! i know there's so much to Warhammer that it just seems overwhelming to me, but i'll def give it a shot with one game and see how it goes from there. thank you !! thank you !!!! personally, and i might be biased cause i'm kinda their friend, but i really like In Other Worlds over on YT. he does a more theatrical approach to his games with his current focus being on fandoms ( currently Fallout and Resident Evil ) utilizing the Genesys system. but he occasionally does DnD when he has the time. he's very loyal to the unpredictability of the dice, yet still finds a way to make things cohesive. the other is Me, Myself, and Die which is also more cinematic. he is a professional voice actor too ! he does long running series utilizing various systems, and he's bring over characters from his other games and flesh out their stories / adventures ! if you want something more chill and just playing the game without being all extra, i really like Board Games with Thomas. obviously, he does a lot of solo board games, but he also dabbles in solo TTRPGs by using Mythic. he also streams them on occasion. he recently did a playthrough of the Fallout 2d20 system using Mythic. for people that have a similar set up to Geek Gamers, i'd recommend Lone Adventurer and The Dungeon Dive. they both do reviews for games and playthroughs of them. and imo they do a good job breaking down the game while playing it. my final recommendation is Wilona's Cave. i don't watch their content anymore but they might be up your alley. they offer different ways to get inspired by the games that they play, using video games, drawings, etc to fuel into their TTRPG sessions, and they have a similar set up to Geek Gamers where everything is laid out on a table. hopefully you can find one or two people from the ones i recommended haha. |
