It took me two or three reads, but I think I know what's going on: absolute chaos.

100th post! Thoughts on Immediate First Aid? I think it should work, but I may have to deform it considerably to make it work - I ran the numbers, and it's more of a patching-up skill than a good one to use in life-or-death situations (at 25% hitpoints, the healer kills his target 30% of the time). But I'd welcome more experienced voices on the idea.

EDIT: Just realized that my numbers crunch involved the healer having a healer's kit. Yikes. I probably should run them a bit more extensively...

EDIT 2: Post will come. I have to figure out how to do this - bear with me if I do things that don't make sense or are just bastardly. I'm trying to perform the equivalent of juggling flaming eggs.

As far as your "immediate first aid" goes... why not take a leaf out of Pathfinder's book?

Well, it's perhaps not quite what you want, though. I dunno, your rule seems like it gives a lot of healing... which might be useful in a low-magic setting, but at the same time, isn't part of the point of a low-magic setting for us to not be able to depend on things like that?

Let's look at the maths here anyway...

Geoffrey at the moment has a +7 to his heal check, +9 including the healer's kit. Let's give him an extra +2 from an aid another check from Manon, who is rather likely (70%) to succeed on that check. That's a +11.

This means, on average Geoffrey heals Vaughn for:

Current HP : Cured HP (Resultant HP)
-9~6 HP : +9~5 HP (0~11 HP)
7~12 HP : +8~6 HP (15~17 HP)
13~14 HP : +8~7 HP (21 HP)
15~18 HP : +9~6 HP (24 HP)
19~23 HP : +5~1 HP (24 HP)

And for Ballick, this is:

Current HP : Cured HP (Resultant HP)
-9~2 HP : +9~2 HP (0~4 HP)
3~5 HP : +4~3 HP (7~8 HP)
6 HP : +3 (9 HP)
7~8 HP : +4~+3 HP (11 HP)
9~10 HP : +2~+1 HP (11 HP)

Well, you kind of get the idea.

But at level 6, under a hypothetical world where Geoffrey maxed his heal skill, picked up Skill Focus (heal) and Self-Sufficient, and is getting a +2 Aid Another from Manon... That's a +18 check, meaning quite a lot of totally free healing. Of course, this might be exactly what you want.

Well, I don't expect I'll try to break the system... but Treat Injury in D20 Modern gives a pretty decent system for restoring hit points and surgery.
