”My apologies for prying,” Elayna says, a bit surprised by Geralt’s comment. [b][color=darkorchid]”Warriors usually seem eager to relate the tales of their battles. Being a healer I have heard more than a few and I often wonder if they are accurate or if they exaggerate them and if they do, for whose benefit.” Seeing Gabriel and Gren from the corner of her eye, Elayna looks over and gives them a wave when one of them is looking.* She takes a drink of the wine that Geralt brought over as she considers the man. ”So we’re being sent on a mission against impossible odds and are considered completely expendable. Do you have any ideas on how to accomplish our task and more importantly, how to survive? The numbers will be against us and although I can keep us all alive to a certain extent, I cannot ward off a true killing blow. Well, not completely…

Geralt waved off her apologies with a tilt of his hand, shaking his head while he finished chewing the piece of bacon. "There's no need for you to apologize Miss Elayna, as I don't consider trying to better understand someone you'll be fighting side by side with 'prying'. My past is just... complicated, and I don't generally enjoy burdening others with details of it. As for the soldiers who boast of their claims, well between you and me, they were probably just trying to impress you enough so that they might have a shot at bedding you. If ever you meet a man who boasts of killing another man, true or not, don't give him the time of day as he's worse than trash." Geralt takes a drink after she finishes taking hers, savoring the taste as it rolls across his tongue. "Well a few things come to mind. Namely desertion, going into the battle knowing we won't survive, or in your case praying more than you've ever prayed before. I am indebted to you now though, so rest assured knowing that I'll fight to my dying breath to protect you, and they probably will too." Geralt motions to the other members of their squad, his face an emotionless mask as always.

Gren raised his eyebrows with disdain at the mostly green stringy thing on Gabriel's plate. "I would say that what you have there is some form of spinacia, but I'm no botanical specialist so you'll just have to take your chances with it. That's why I only took things that were obviously what they were. Granted the meat is a bit bland, but it's better than mystery food."

Gren looked up just in time to see Elayna wave and he returned the gesture with a wink, a smile, and a nod. "And you thought I would be out of luck with that massage," the thief said with a big grin to Gabriel as he took a bite of food, "Guess I can't blame you for underestimating me. None of us are exactly what we seem. For example... that sword of yours. Quite a fancy piece of hardware you carry. One might wonder if it was given to you, perhaps even passed down by a family member or if you had to slay someone for it. Regardless, enjoy your strange green treat."

Elayna listened closely to Geralt’s words, not wanting to miss anything over the din of the mess. As he mentioned men boasting to her in order to bed her she gave a little laugh. “Well that’s true enough.” She considered the scarred man in front of her as she took a few more bites of her pancakes. She had expected something far different than the man she was talking to and silently rebuked herself for jumping to conclusions. “Please do not feel indebted to me. We all have gifts and special abilities that help make us who we are. Mine is the ability to heal and it is something that I would not deny anyone who is not a clear enemy.” Her gaze wanders to Geralt’s scars again, curious but not wanting to pry. ”If you ever want those scars removed, let me know. It will be painful but I could take them away, at least the not so deep ones.”

Geralt felt slightly self conscious as Elayna stared at him, though he made no comment about it. "Feel however you want about my debt, but know that it doesn't change anything. I'm still going to owe you, even if you don't want to accept that. My abilities are quite limited to the variety of disposal, so I expect I won't be able to repay you until we're actually in battle." Geralt stood up from the table and turned to walk away, but looked over his shoulder at her as he spoke. "There's only one scar that I'd consider having healed, but I think it's outside of your abilities. Good day Elayna Silversheen."

OOCYes, I did just make a nickname for your character

"Well, I was in a hurry, and finding new food is interesting. Usually." Gabriel pushed the plate aside, frowning slightly at the vegetable matter still on it.

"As to the sword... There really isn't anything that special about it. It's like how a craftsman or an artist will use the best tools they can afford. Given my own skill with a sword, it would not do any good to have a inferior blade, would it?" Gabriel smiled smugly across the table at Gren before leaning in slightly conspiratorially. "You were complaining rather loudly about being forced into this war yesterday. If you are that worried about your own hide, I might have a way out for you."

“It was very nice talking with you Geralt. Don’t be a stranger during the mission” Elayna watched him walk away before turning her attention back to her pancakes and fruit. She nodded and smiled as people passed and greeted her but found that she was content just watching the other people in the mess. She idly wondered where the hospital ship might be located and if they could use her services while she was here.

OOCI like it.*

"Do tell," Gren replied with a sly look. It wasn't like he was afraid of dying. More like he was allergic to dying and like any allergy, the best way to take care of it was to stay away from the cause. Not that he couldn't take care of himself if he had to. Afterall, it did take four well trained soldiers to bring him down. Granted they brought him down rather hard, but the point was that they had to outnumber him in order to beat him. Besides, he was curious what this man had to say. Knowledge was power as they said and having too much knowledge was never a bad thing whether he used it or not.

"Well, I admit it would have been more use back on the ship, but if you find a chance to slip overboard, I have a vial of a liquid that should improve your swimming ability for a little while. If the purveyor was trustworthy."

"Is it arrow proof? Cause it's not the swim that kills you. It's the pointy sticks shot at you that do the trick," Gren whispered back to the man before leaning back in his chair and taking a bite of meat, "Still, I am intrigued with your proposition. What kind of fee would be associated with obtaining goods of that kind?"

"I have to say, I'm not sure yet. Some part of me thinks that it might be worth it to just get you out of here, but maybe you have an offer to make in return?"

A dull roar cascaded over the mess barge, but it was comprised of little more than idle chatter as most upon it were caught up contemplating the future rather than reveling in the present. With what seemed like the footsteps of giants, Captains Greenlei and Steele emerged from one of the other ships in the flotilla, with the two unknown officers following shortly after. An eerie silence fell over the entire barge at the presence of the four men. The two captains spun around for a quick salute before facing the group once more. The two unknown men disappeared as Captain Steele began to speak, "Listen up, recruits. I know you didn't have a lot of time, but we've got our orders and we're to be off within the hour." A moan of disapproval washed over the crowd, but was silenced quickly by Steele's highly unamused gaze. "I will relay orders to squad commanders, who will give the orders to you. Once that's done, we'll pile onto the Good Glory and be off." A rather squeaky voice broke the silence, "Oy! Who were those two blokes?" Steele's piercing eyes turned to the general direction of the speaker, "Those were two of the greatest military minds of our time. That was General Amstead Rodemus, and Admiral Viscount Mulbury. Now, unless anyone else has anymore stupid questions, I'll continue." Greenlei moved away from Steele towards his ship as Steele began to shout out names and codenames, "Smith! You're red squad! DeLaurier! You're blue! Oriana..." The men that Steele called moved briskly towards him, and huddled around a single table presumably laden with maps and battle plans. Afterwards, the squad leaders picked their respective squads out of the crowd, and claimed a table for themselves to speak to their recruits. Smith chose the table at which Gabriel and Gren sat, beckoning the others in his squad towards the same table. Once they had gathered, he spoke, "Alright folks, here's the plan." Smith withdrew a dagger from a sheath on his hip, and carved a line in the table with three arrows pointing to it. "Here's the front line. Here's Blue squad, here's Green, and here's us," he said, referencing each of the arrows in turn, "We're hitting the Orcs on three fronts to ensure our success. Our objective is a bunker about a mile and a half from the line, established during the first few months of the invasion, and quickly lost thereafter. Command is convinced that if we can secure that bunker, we can hold the line there. Now I don't intend to lose anyone on the way there, but I'm not going to lie about conditions. It's going to be wet, it's going to be cold, it's going to be miserable, and we can't stop moving. We stop moving before we hit that bunker, we all die, if you break your leg, I'm afraid your on your own." Smith didn't enjoy the information he was relaying, but it was the truth. "Now, one of two things will happen if we get there in one piece, we're either taking the bunker ourselves, or reinforcing one of the squads that beat us there. If it's the former, we can't wait around for reinforcements, we'll have to move as soon as we get there. Now about getting there; that part of Thunderhold is a maze of trenches, sinkholes, and artillery patterns, so keep your head down, keep with the squad, and for everyone's sake keep moving. As for resistance, the Orcs don't like direct conflict on their own turf, so don't expect too much fighting until we get to the bunker. What you can expect is boulders and ballista bolts falling all around you the entire time, and constant rain and wind. Once you're done eating and saying your prayers, get back on the ship. We land in a few hours." Smith was dying inside telling these helpless recruits what to expect in the hours ahead, and immediately left the table and headed for the ship, making sure not to make eye contact with anyone on the way. Falhurst, Crue, and Hodges exchanged nervous glances before Falhurst spoke, "What'd you reckon?" Crue responded rather calmly, "He's just scared, scared for us. He knows we're probably gonna die and he knows there's nothing he can do." Trying to relieve some of the tension that Smith had left in his wake, Hodges turned to the rest of the people assembled there, "Well, I'm ready for anything with Lieutenant Smith in charge. How 'bout you lot?"
