Description:

Hamish Sledgehammersby, is a dwarf of four feet six inches, who in many ways embodies the stereotypical hardiness of his kind. His muscular frame and ruddy skin, marked by scars and burns, narrate his lifelong dedication to brewing as well as the battles he’s endured. His beard, a chaotic tangle of hair, debris, and food, conceals clan tattoos that adorn his scalp and face, revealing a heritage in which he is almost ashamed to have any pride in. His piercing blue eyes, often hidden beneath the wildness of his beard and a stern demeanor, shine with intelligence and unspoken sorrow. His oft-broken nose and the grim set of his lips add to his rugged appearance, while his voice, deep and accented, echoes the tales of his people and his own storied past.

Hamish’s attire is functional, favoring heavy leather and sturdy boots, reflecting his readiness for both work and conflict. His clothing, though worn and stained, hints at a colorful and finer past. The clang of meticulously kept flagons at his belt announces his approach, each filled with his expertly crafted ale. His arms, visible beneath his attire, are a tapestry of tattoos and scars, a story of both the successes and failures of his life. Despite the shakes that sometimes seize his hands, his skill in brewing remains undiminished, a testament to his craft and the turmoil he seeks to drown with his own creations.

Personality:

Hamish Sledgehammersby, is a dwarf of paradoxes and in many ways is an embodiment of both resilience and regret. His gruff exterior and booming voice dominate Falcon’s Hollow, whether he is filling the air with the guttural chanting of the Dwarven Hold of Tharnum or adopting mock anger at Barry the Jackanape. At the Jak'n'napes, his laughter and growls fill the air, mingling with the scent of his brews which he provides often at cost to the Crimmy. Once a proud warrior, Hamish’s life changed irrevocably after a fateful night when goblins overran his home due to his negligence. The guilt consumed him, driving him to seek solace in ale to silence the haunting voices of the past.

During his years in Falcon Hollow Hamish has slowly emerged from his darkest days, building relationships with the Crimmy's, Thuldrin Kreed, Laurel and the group of children led by Savram Vade as they grew up has pushed his guilt to the back of his mind. Despite his flaws, Hamish’s loyalty is unwavering, and his protectiveness fierce with his hard exterior shown to be a façade common to many dwarves rather than any real hatred of others. He’s quick to defend the weak, with his lambasting of the previous owner of The Sitting Duck having rung in the ears of the town for days with Ergin Tock stepping in himself to declare that both Jalene and Cookie would be well treated. To the town’s children, particularly Savram Vade, he’s an unexpected friend, willing to slip them tangy juices made of berries and herbs that the group pretends is strong ale and often the target of their schemes as their laughter at their latest successful heist continuing to sooth his inner turmoil.

Hamish’s interactions at his worst times can be a dance with demons. His anger is swift and fuelled more from his own insecurities than anything else, like a wind though such moments blow fast are are gone with Hamish showing in words and in deed his true feelings towards the other residents of the town. There are moments when his sorrow and longing for redemption surface, though they are almost always in the privacy of his own hearth and home. In recent years much of the darkness has lifted and what many had considered to be a foreboding and harsh person is possessed of a surprising warmth and generosity that sees the whole town enjoying specialist brews at festival times handed it for free from his stocks.

Brewing is a cornerstone of Hamish's new measure of peace, it is in the dim light of his outhouse where he still battles his demons and when he emerges from there they are pushed back by the light of his friends in the town. Brewing in many ways is his passion and atonement, each ale a homage to his lost kin and a past he can’t return to. His hands, skilled and precise, craft renowned brews that hint at the man he once was. Such high quality creations are unusual for a town like Falcon's Hollow and the provision of such was the beginnings of a true friendship between Hamish and Ella and Marcus both.

Over time these moments of anger and internal reflection have reduced. More often, Hamish has embraced a version of his former garrulous self, it becoming common for him to share a drink and a story with any who frequent the Jak'n'napes. On quiet days it is not being uncommon for Barry to be given a place at Hamish's table and a bowl of a particular brew. It is clear to all that whilst Falcon's Hollow might be looked down on by many, for Hamish it is the anchor which has dragged him from his darkest moments.

Background:

Hamish Sledgehammersby’s tale begins in Tharnum, a dwarven stronghold in the Ironpeak Mountains, known for its blacksmiths and warriors. Son to Gorin, the guard captain, and Brenna, a master blacksmith, Hamish was steeped in martial tradition from youth, excelling in combat and earning the moniker “Sledge” [Should you mention to him that this name is not too imaginative you would be met with a blank look] both for his skill with weapons and the blunt way with words he often adopted.

The Sledgehammersby family was integral to Tharnum’s prosperity, with Hamish’s brother Doran and sister Aelith contributing as blacksmith and healer, respectively. Their lives were interwoven with duty and affection, a seemingly unbreakable bond. Tragedy struck when goblins attacked Tharnum, their attack successful due to Hamish, inebriated and negligent, failing to guard an entrance, resulting in the hold’s downfall and the death of his family. Overwhelmed by guilt he declared himself to blame for the tragedy and thus tattooed with a list of his sins both real and imagined he departed his family hold, an exile.

Wandering in sorrow, Hamish eventually settled in Falcon’s Hollow, a logging town, where he became a brewer. His ales, made from local ingredients and those small amounts of exotic botanicals he could pick up off travellers, earned him respect and forged him a close relationship quickly with not only the Crimmy's and the now displaced owners of the Sitting Duck. In those early years it became a weekly fixture for him to sit with Thuldrin Kreed with the Gavel courting Hamish for the prestige a Dwarven brewer could bring to the town. Over time these became less often as it became clear to Kreed that Hamish's loyalty could not be bought and the talks devolved into an amicable if not particularly warm friendship.

Despite the dark days in his own mind it was not long before the town’s community life began to clearly mirror the clan culture of Tharnum in his mind, their not understanding and not caring about his past giving him a sense of belonging, this did not eliminate the spectre of his past and his guilt but over time its looming shadow receded in the face of the open and non-conditional friendships he had formed. His alcoholism, both a coping mechanism and a destructive cycle, reflected his struggle with guilt and as his guard came down so to has his relationship with his own product improved.

In Falcon’s Hollow, Hamish found a new purpose, his brewing skills a source of comfort for the townspeople. Though Hamish has a positive relationship with most in the town perhaps his strongest friendship is with Laurel, their roles within the town and areas of expertise being similar though not overlapping. If questioned on why he had gravitated to Laurel it would be likely that any answer would be a string of muffled muttering from behind his mustachios and a stronger red coming into his cheeks.

No matter the lack of labels the two of them obviously share a bond as close as any married couple with significant glances and private jokes. Laurel's loud complaints about him having not combed his latest experiment with mead from his beard before meeting her being a usual welcoming salvo. At night, in solitude, Hamish still often reflect on his family’s memories, their love, and their unity. These reflections are his commitment to honour their legacy, a silent promise amidst his ongoing fight with the demons of his past. Hamish's path is one which has led him to the darkest depths of his own psyche but finally led him back to a place of happiness and calmness.

Can I ask if the alignment requirements for monk might be a little loosened to allow me to use Tankard and Blade Style?

Seems doable. Just as an FYI, the martial artist archetype naturally removes the requirement, but I think we can accommodate a small change like that.

@Hound,

I think I added enough to warrant a spot on the table next update. I'll toss in a few more details here and there, but I had a go after dinner, when inspiration struck.

Just wanted to make sure I wasn't misunderstanding. The game world sounds lovely and I look forward to potentially participating.
I'm sorry this totally got missed.

Yes, human retains their normal skilled and bonus feat.

Try now, hound.

I have a theory as to why it didn't do it... we'll see.

sometimes, this site is... persnickety.

Also, I am not sure on Human yet... I kinda like the idea of a Sylph, perhaps. But like you say.... build the story first, then the character, then the details.

App is finally done.

Glad I still had time. Took me a while, was putting an app in another game that had the nearly the same deadline. AD&D 2e. Man, been a long time since I played that, had to read everything thoroughly, had forgotten a few things. LOL ah well. While some like certain editions, I like them all, from D&D to AD&D to Pathfinder. Enjoy them all, well, actually not quite. Wasn't thrilled with AD&D 4e, and after reading Pathfinder 2e, I wasn't crazy about playing that either.

This is mostly just curiosity, and I'm unlikely to change my build as a result, but why no investigators? Was it an oversight or do you have a beef with them? (If it was an oversight, I may take it instead of oracle, as it fits the story I have written better)

Thank you. It turns out I won't need it because I want to be one of the halflings native to the land before the loggers came but I appreciate the answer.
