Rise of the First Order

Game NameRise of the First Order
Game SystemFantasy Flight Games Star Wars RPG
FlavorFledgling Resistance vs Shadow Government, Freedom vs Security, Facing Galaxy-Spanning Changes

The HookFor decades there has been relative peace. The New Republic, having defeated the Galactic Empire in the battle of Jakku, signed the Galactic Concordance at Bakura and took their place as the dominant governing body over the galaxy. Systems flocked to the banner, eager to see the return of freedoms lost to the Empire. There was resistance, most notably from the Confederacy of Corporate Systems and the New Separatist Union, but few gave them any real concern. Riding a high of popular opinion, the Senate quickly fell into indecision and gridlock as the old bureaucracies returned. Favors were traded, backroom deals were made, but the oppression of the old Imperial regime was absent and people were content. The massive demilitarization efforts among the New Republic gave credence to their claims of peaceful rule despite concerns of many in the senate. There was even talk of a new Jedi Order in training somewhere in the colonies.

When a large segment of the Centrist faction in the Senate abandoned the Republic to join an ex-Imperial faction from the Unknown Regions, few in power gave it any weight. The Populists, headed by war hero Leia Organa, decried the act as the spark that would ignite the Imperial loyalists in the galaxy. They were met with deaf ears and crushed by the revelation that Leia Organa was descended from none other than Darth Vader himself. Forced to abdicate her position in the Senate, General Organa took her allies and formed a resistance movement to combat the encroachment of the First Order. Six standard months have passed and things are worse than Organa ever suggested. Luke Skywalker's jedi temple, once a beacon of hope, is now a smoking ruin and the jedi master has vanished. The First Order now has a champion who is strong in the force, a Darth Vader of its own, and there are no known jedi around to stand against him. While the First Order's efforts have been primarily focused on the Outer Rim region the danger is felt even in Hosnian Prime where the senate continues to argue and debate while doing nothing to act against the threat.
The Rising ThreatThis is a difficult time in the galaxy. The First Order has been lurking in the Unknown Regions for decades. They have advanced the military might of the empire with technical research and an extensive kidnap-and-indoctrinate program that has shattered families in Wild Space and beyond. Convinced about the inadequacy of the Republic government, they have begun pushing forward toward the Core Worlds. The demilitarized New Republic provides little obstacle to their efforts, so it falls to Leia Organa's Resistance to hold the line. The stress cracks are forming around the edges of known space and the danger is echoed even in the streets of the Core Worlds.

The campaign will begin in the Outer Rim on the planet Bakura, an Old Republic colony known as the signing place for the Galactic Concordance that ended the existence of the Galactic Empire. Bakura is a neutral staging area in the Resistance/First Order conflict as the planetary government has sided with the Confederacy of Corporate Systems in recent years in order to produce repulsorlift technology for both sides. It sits on the border between the Outer Rim and Wild Space, a region of space that has been hardest hit by the efforts of the First Order, and while it will still be several years before they are powerful enough to bring an end to the New Republic they are a force of great oppression on the outskirts of the galaxy. After the initial story that brings everyone together there will be seeds galore and opportunities aplenty for the characters to bite into, but the players will need to take the initiative to involve themselves in the plots and schemes that unfold around them. I will also make every effort to develop character ties to player-created NPCs, organizations and locations so take the lead on those. While this is not specifically a Resistance game from the outset, characters should be inclined to work against the First Order as they form the primary antagonist for the story.
What to ExpectInvestigation: The First Order is a known entity in the galaxy but the details are sketchy. The extent of their might, the source of their funding and their goals are all up for speculation. With the Senate unable to sort out a proper plan it is in the hands of the Resistance to scrutinize the First Order's efforts. In order to combat the growing threat, the Resistance has agents scouring the Unknown Regions and Outer Rim in search of evidence that will help build support in the New Republic.

Action: A dog-fight over the ruins of a lake-side colony; First Order forces advancing on a group of Resistance fighters entrenched on a jungle moon; A running gunfight against local enforcers down the narrow streets of an ecumenopolis. Action scenes are central to a proper Star Wars story and the Genesys system does an excellent job of making the action fluid and narrative while giving the players plenty of agency in how things play out.

Intrigue: There is more to opposing the First Order than explosions and blasters. The Order is deeply entrenched out on the edges of known space, with hideouts and secret bases all over the Unknown Regions. Information is as important to the Resistance as combat capability and they are always on the lookout for anything that might lend them an advantage against a foe as technologically and numerically superior as the Order is. They contract with free agent spies and bounty hunters, make deals with crime syndicates and seek out allies among the New Republic that might be convinced of the looming threat.

A Galaxy of All TypesFor this game, I will allow material from any published FFG sourcebook. You can make your character from any of the three corebooks, using the Obligation/Duty/Morality mechanic appropriate for your career selection. Players will begin with 50 additional XP which will be considered post-creation XP. This means it cannot be used to increase characteristics.

So, you want to apply? Easy enough. Anyone who has ever been involved in my application processes in the past will already know that I am not the 'give me a book' type. I hate lengthy application wait times and long, drawn out backstories. I prefer to see things like history and personality develop during the course of play. Keep it short and to the point and you'll get credit for reading comprehension.

Name: Everybody's got one.
Species: Anything from an official FFG supplement.
Career & Specialization: Straight from the books.

Keep your answers to the following short. Say 2-5 sentences, just enough to get the information across. I'm not looking to have you all write books here and I won't have the time to read a novel from everyone so go with concise and informative.

A Long Time Ago: Tell me about a formative event from your character's childhood. Something that impacts them to this day.
A Jedi Like My Father: Tell me how your character came into their class. What brought them into it and what keeps them doing it?
Never Tell Me The Odds: Detail 2 things your character is good at, and 1 thing they just can't get the hang of.
A Galaxy Far, Far Away: What brings your character to Bakura? Check out the hooks below if you need a little inspiration.
We Have Powerful Friends: Describe a relationship your character has that has been significant in their life. Make this an NPC you'd like to see pop up in the game.

Other Stuff: A picture that speaks to you? Some music for your character's soundtrack? A snippet of dialogue from an important moment in their life? This is a free-for-all section to tack on anything that you just feel like you gotta have on here. There is no length limitation here but make sure what you put in actually adds something interesting to the character.

Lastly, tell me how familiar you are with FFG Star Wars or the Genesys system. This isn't a point I'll be using for selection. I'm just looking to get a baseline on how much people know before we get started.
Potential Hooks

ExpectationI am balancing several part-time jobs, which amounts to working full-time hours while shifting gears mentally each day. Until I've turned one of those jobs into a single full-time gig I am hesitant to commit to more than one post a week. If the players advance at two per week I will make my best effort to accommodate but I won't make any promises there.
FAQ
  • Will the group have a ship? It is hard to imagine a Star Wars game without some exciting space-based shenanigans. There will certainly be ship availability for the party, though the exact nature will depend on the allegiances and capabilities of the characters. It may be stolen, or provided by the Resistance, or collectively owned by the players. In any case, I do anticipate space combat and travel to play a part.
  • What is the current date: We will start the game in early 30 ABY, roughly 4 years before the events of The Force Awakens.
  • How long have the First Order been active: Since before the fall of the Empire, so at least 25 years.
  • About droids: The initial adventure takes place on Bakura, a planet that has experienced several droid uprisings in its time. Droids are not easily trusted by the populace and, since leaving the New Republic for the more profit-focused Confederacy of Corporate Systems, are not regarded as anything more than property to be exploited or easy targets for human frustration. More so than anywhere else, droid players can expect to face a more difficult time socially during the start of the game than others. Bakura is, however, just the jumping off point and its prejudices will not carry over into future adventures.

I'll be honest, I've wanted to play an 'Edge of the Empire' game ever since I first saw a previous game app. I bought the Core Rulebook even though I didn't get into that game. And later I hoped my brother would be interested only for him to have not enough time to play.

So I have access to the Core Rulebook but no experience with the actual game mechanics.

I'll probably throw an app together sometime tomorrow. Though I am one of those that like to make an extensive background I'll try to keep it to your specifications.

No experience necessary. It is a pretty easy system to pick it once you get over the weird symbols on the dice. The most struggle my players have had with it is accepting the amount of narrative control they are given as players, which is more akin to systems like 7th Sea.

And feel free to come up with as much backstory as you need to make the character work for you. Just don't add it during the app phase. After selections we will definitely have conversations during creation where that kind of work will still be rewarded.

I encourage everyone to take their time. I gave a two week window on apps so if you put it all up tomorrow you'll have a bit of a wait on your hands. I tend to throw in some optional q&a type stuff at the midpoint just to keep people engaged with their ideas.

Is the group going to have their own starship? If so, will it be used mostly for transport/a base of operations, or will there be exploration or space combat? I ask because one character concept I'm looking at is a maintenance droid who takes care of the ship but droids are so specialised that I wouldn't have much to do if there wasn't much flying around.

I just can't quit you, PCB. I just can't.

Gonna have to think on this one. Off-handed, does EotE/FFG Star Wars have an age rule like PF does? Got two ideas floating in my head for geriatric former Rebels.

No, there are no age mechanics in FFG Star Wars. Have at it, old man!

Question: How long has it been since the signing of the Galactic Concordance on Bakura? And how long ago did the First Order start their 'kidnap-and-indoctrinate program'?

Thinking of making a Detective like character who is driven by the abduction of a sibling at an anniversary of the Galactic Concordance on Bakura several years after the signing. Depending on the timeline, I might have to make my character a little young or have his/her sibling be one of the first taken by the First Order.

The Battle of Jakku was in 5 ABY and Senator Organa resigns the Senate late in 28 ABY. So we will call it early 30 ABY and that means 25 years since the signing of the Galactic Concordance.

The First Order has been working in the Unknown Reaches since before the official fall of the Empire so anything 25 years back is viable for their efforts to be in place. I imagine Bakura would do an annual celebration of the signing so any year since then would work for the kidnapping date.

Never gonna give you up! Never gonna let...ah, you know the rest. Glad that you stopped in here, Sass.

As mentioned, there are no mechanical implications for age in the system. Feel free to complain about your back and kids these days, though. Look forward to more on Gramps here.

I... haven't looked at the FFG star wars books for over a year. @_@ I would love to apply but I don't know where to start. I'm thinking something from either AoR or FaD... It's been a while, I need to look up what new options exist!

Hi, PCB. I'm definitely interested. I've been a fan of Edge of the Empire for a while now. I'll have to put some time into thinking about a character concept. I've got a couple of disconnected ideas that I'll have to work into a more cohesive form. But I've got until the 20th; it shouldn't take me nearly that long.
