Woo! This looks awesome already. Obviously I'm interested since I started the thread a while ago.

I have a slight idea for a character. I went and read through most of the character creation steps and I feel like I need to take a breather. For some reason it feels a bit more complicated than I know it is. I don't really know how to build a character "properly" so I'll just wing it. I found a great character generator online that should hopefully help when I finally end up making it. For now I just need to think of the species & career/specialisation (I'm aware you can have more than one specialisation but I don't remember how that works. Will have another look to see that's something I'd be interested in).

Should have all of your questions answered in the next few days.

Pleased to see all the interest so far. I am looking forward to some great concepts.

Things are pretty moldable in the system, PotatoJedi. Taking a specialisation that is from a different career or even a different book entirely is only 10 points more expensive than taking one from the same career you started in so it is difficult to get blocked mechanically from making your idea work with the numbers.

And I am always happy to answer any questions that anyone comes up with.

Dagg Dibrimi hard at work
  • Name: Dagg Dibrimi (RPXP for anyone who can tell me where I got the name from without googling it )
  • Species: Human (Age: 24)
  • Career (Specialization): The Explorer[Quest] (Fringer/Slicer)
  • Background: Middle-Class Struggles (Parents are mid-level employee's in the Plasma extraction business on Naboo)
  • Obligation: Obsession (Tracking his sister Kara down after the First Order abducted her)
  • Motivations: Relationship (Mako Emory, a childhood friend of Kara's that is helping Dagg in his quest to find his sister)

A Long Time Ago:
13 years ago the Dibrimi family went on vacation on Bakura to celebrate the annual signing of the Galactic Concordance. While their kids Dagg(age 11) and his sister Kara(age 9) never knew about the war or the Empire other than what they read in school books, their parents had lived through it and wanted their children to understand what had happened back then. Dagg was responsible for keeping an eye on his sister Kara and when she was kidnapped by a group of humans in black uniforms he felt helpless to stop them. For years Dagg wondered what would have happened if he had not been big for his age and the kidnappers hadn't decided he was too old to take. His parents never forgave him for losing his sister.

A Jedi Like My Father(Not!):
Dagg's parents worked in the Plasma extraction business on Naboo as mid-level employee's and hoped one day Dagg and Kara would follow in their footsteps. With the kidnapping of Kara and his parent's disapproval of him in general, Dagg left home as soon as possible. At age 18 he signed on as a ship's hand and went to the rim and eventually Bakura in search of his sister. As the year's pass, his investigation has led him of off Bakura and throughout the Rim worlds. He continues looking for her to this day and has made a career out of working as a private investigator in the Rim.

Never Tell Me The Odds:
There are two things Dagg is good at. He has extensive knowledge of the Outer Rim and is good at plotting Astrogation courses through Hyperspace.
The one thing that Dagg has never been good at is Brawling. When Dagg gets into a fist fight, he zigs when he should have zagged, or he stands up when he should have ducked. Dagg has learned to avoid physical confrontation's when he can and rely's on his blaster when he can't.

A Galaxy Far, Far Away:
Dagg is back on Bakura following another missing person's case of a kidnapped boy, age nine. The situation is eerily similar to his sister's kidnapping, and he is determined not to let the trail go cold again! All clues point to the First Order orchestrating the crime just like his sister's kidnapping.

We Have Powerful Friends:
right-aligned image
Little Mako Emory

Mako Emory (Age 21 Slicer at the start of the game) was is Kara's friend from back on Naboo, and Dagg was quite surprised when two years after he had left home, Mako showed up on his doorstep. It turns out Dagg was not the only one that wanted to find Kara. Mako was a seventeen-year-old girl that looked fifteen at the time, and Dagg insisted she head back home right away only to be brought up short by the information she had sliced from a First Order comm satellite. It turns out Mako was a natural at Slicing, but after nearly a half year of searching, they realized the data had gone cold or was a dead end. Dagg and Mako keep in touch, and they fed work each other's way as the years passed, but Mako now has a bounty on her head for digging too deeply into the First Order computers, so she moves around a lot.

Other Stuff:
  • A picture that speaks to you?
The one in the upper left is Dagg, Mako is to the right, and the lower left is the oldest picture of Kara that Dagg has. It was taken shortly before she was abducted.
  • Some music for your character's soundtrack?
Not into music that much but if you want, then pick something like Techno-Rock for Dagg.
  • A snippet of dialogue from an important moment in their life?
"Now listen here you little pri...person! You are going home, and that's final!" Mako hands over a datapad without saying a word. "What is thi...this is...hmm this just might..." His ramblings are interrupted by Mako saying, "I'm hungry. Got something to eat?" Dagg absentmindedly waves to the fridge and said, "Some fried rice and beer." So Mako had her first beer at age seventeen while watching Dagg absorb the information she had sliced.
  • Extra?
    • Dagg's parents have never tried to get in touch with their errant son since he left home six years ago. Their names are Lonny and Gabriel Dibrimi.
    • Dagg does not make friends easily as his obsession with finding Kara puts a strain on most friendships.
    • Though he is not the best at the game, Dagg does love a good game of Saboc.
    • He dislikes it when people cheat him, especially during a game of Saboc.

Lastly, tell me how familiar you are with FFG Star Wars or the Genesys system: I only put together one character once, but I have access to the Core Rulebook and no experience with the actual game mechanics.

Additional Questions
Additional Questions:
  • The Force is a mysterious aspect of the galaxy that pervades almost every culture in some way. From the ancient Jedi to the Church of the Force and the Knights of Ren, everyone views the Force in a unique way. What does your character know about the Force? What do they believe?
Dagg's mother went on and on about the Force as he grew up. And if it weren't for the news vids talking about the Galactic Civil War every anniversary of the signing of the Galactic Concordance and how Luke Skywalker was instrumental in defeating the Emperor with the use of the Force, Dagg would have shrugged and written off the whole Force nonsense as a hokey religion. As it is, Dagg dislikes the Force as he cannot figure it out. Dagg tends to ignore the Force until it enters his life in some form. And then he treats it very warily.

  • The New Republic is not the only governing body in the galaxy. The First Order, working out of the Unknown Reaches, and the Confederacy of Corporate Systems, based in the inner rim manufacturing colonies are also significant. Less so, the New Separatist Union, built from remnants of the Clone Wars-era Confederacy of Independent Systems, and the Sovereign Latitudes of Maracavanya, a collective of pirates playing government, are known to most. Does your character have any alliances politically? What do they think about the other groups?
Dagg is not aligned with any of the major political groups other than the New Republic. He tends to favor the Republic but has no official connection to them. He has helped the Republic and their agents when they need aid from time to time. Dagg also has several connections with most outer rim territories to aid him in his search for Kara and his job as a private investigator. Mostly low key officials and underworld contacts. Though he dislikes them for their pirate practices, he has also cultivated a contact or two with the Sovereign Latitudes of Maracavanya. Sometimes Dagg wished he never did.

  • Does your character have a significant regret that haunts them? What about an accomplishment that they are proud of?
Other than preventing the kidnapping of Kara when he was eleven, whenever Dagg fails to find a missing person he feels a bit of regret. But it is Kara's kidnapping and the fact that Mako might die in this line of work that haunts his dreams. Dagg feels proud when he can save someone from a kidnappers clutches or when he outwits and opponent, but the feeling rarely lasts.

  • Does your character have many acquaintances around the galaxy, a small but close-knit group of friends, or something in between? How does you character generally want to be viewed by others, and what do they do to promote that image?
Dagg feels he has many acquaintances and contacts around the Outer Rim near the First Order territories. But only one real friend in Mako. Dagg likes looking cool like a smuggler or a shady underworld character even though he does not feel like one. He wears a sturdy leather jacket and makes sure his blaster is set for a quick draw if need be. Having to portray his tough character aspect has got him into many scrapes where he got the stuffing kicked out of him, but he never gives up. This has given him a reputation for stubbornness to the extreme and also a reputation for not being that good with his fists.

  • Was your character around during the Galactic Civil War (roughly 25 years ago)? What do they remember most about that time? Has that experience affected them in a significant way?
Dagg was born almost a year after the Galactic Civil War ended. Roughly 8-9 months after actually. Dagg tries hard not to think of himself as a post-war baby boomer. The idea of his parents conceiving him during celebrations of the end of the war gives him the heebie-jeebies. But what he never experienced was feed to him as he grew up by his patriotic parents. So he knows of the hardships and the injustice that happened during the Galactic Civil War. But it's all intellectual knowledge; he does not truly understand what it was like to live through the war.

Application - Wookiee Smuggler Thief
right-aligned image
  • Name: Wrrurviyysshom (known as Patch due to the large bald patch of scar tissue on his back)
  • Species: Wookiee (Age 72)
  • Career (Specialization): Smuggler (Thief)

A Long Time Ago:
The Empire captured Patch and sold him into slavery when he was still virtually a cub, a mere 36 years old. Grand Moff Tolruck sent him to Kuat as part of a five hundred strong contingent to work in the shipyards there. At one point some of the wookiees attempted to escape but were caught. As part of his punishment Patch’s back was burned causing it to be bald from then on.

A Jedi Like My Father:
When the wookiees were finally emancipated after the fall of the Empire, Patch went back to Kashyyk. Unfortunately he never felt like he fitted in there. He was very self-conscious about his physical scars, but his emotional ones were even worse. He tried to hide out in the forest but there just wasn’t enough space any more, after the Imperial logging. He eventually decided it would be better to leave the planet. He travelled the Outer Rim doing whatever work he could find. Because of the reputation of wookiees he generally found work with the less savoury types of employers, collecting debts, acting as muscle for specific jobs and occasionally collecting a bounty. He abhorred the needless violence and tried instead to solve problems in more indirect ways.

Never Tell Me The Odds:
Patch has learned to transfer the wookiee’s natural hunting skill for use in cities. Despite his size he has become adept at blending into the shadows and moving silently. Since he has only had himself to rely on he has become extra-vigilant, some may even say paranoid. Unfortunately this jumpiness has actually hindered his awareness in some ways; he constantly peers into the shadows, sometimes missing things right in front of his face.

A Galaxy Far, Far Away:
Bakura is just the latest stop in Patch’s wanders. Having burned bridges with most of the criminal organisations in the southern Outer Rim by refusing to get involved in the more brutal work they were offering, he has found he had to move even further out.

We Have Powerful Friends:
During his time in Kuat Drive Yards Patch was assigned to a work crew under the supervision of a human technician by the name of Sorv Dreiz. Dreiz wasn’t a naturally cruel man, but he was under a lot of pressure from his superiors and ended up using whatever means he could to get more productivity from the workers under his command. It was impressed upon him repeatedly that the slaves were expendable, and so he came to view them that way. He pushed them to their limits and beyond, and was even the one who ordered Patch’s mutilation. So, when the New Republic took over and the slaves were released, Patch was surprised to find that it was Dreiz himself who released them all (from behind transparisteel) and bade them to go. He even paid for their transport back home.

Other Stuff:
See photo above.

Lastly, tell me how familiar you are with FFG Star Wars or the Genesys system:
I have played in a number of games of FFG’s Star Wars over Play-by-Post on another site and GM’d two of my own. I’ve never had the pleasure of playing it in real life, but maybe one day. Maybe. My kids are still young so I can hopefully indoctrinate them into Star Wars in time.

My ideas a coalescing into a Twi'lek smuggler (scoundrel). For being a "scoundrel" she's going to be a pretty straightforward kind of person. Her skills are going to include things like charm, cool, pilot, and the blaster... She's a smuggler only because she believes in free trade and thinks the rules, fees, and regulations have gone too far and are interfering with peoples' prosperity.

Although it’s called a career, it doesn’t actually have to be your character’s job. For example you can build a ‘Colonist’ who is born and raised on Coruscant, and has no intention of leaving. So your ‘smuggler’ could well be an honest trader, or a pilot, or whatever you like.

Jatt Colton
right-aligned image

Name: Jatt Colton
Species: Human
Career & Specialization: Smuggler Pilot

A Long Time Ago: My twin sister and I were the middle children of three boys and a girl. Fortunately, my twin sister was not among the workers or she would've been taken by the Sennex Pirates too but it would've been for more than just pirating work. Instead my father pushed me out to the pirates. It was the opportunity he was looking for to get rid of me. I was put into a cage along with a cargo hold of other unfortunate beings.

A Jedi Like My Father: I vowed to get back to find my sister and vengeance on my father. The only way to do that was to learn how to fly. I discovered that I love to fly and the Sennex Pirates exploited my love of flying. Getting better and better with each mission and making it easier and easier to make my escape to find my sister.

Never Tell Me The Odds: First and foremost he is good at flying, really good at flying. He goes for all the high risk jobs and relishes the challenge. The second thing he is good at is surviving the streets. Working with the Sennex Pirates made life difficult to survive out on the streets. I learned to notice dangerous situations before it was too late. Lastly, he is really bad at shooting blasters. They call him Almost Jatt Colton because he almost hits the target.

A Galaxy Far, Far Away: Bakura is a dominant force in repulsorlift technology, providing it in such great quantities that it nearly dominates the market. You have been hired to get your hands on the schematics for a new single-coil grav lift being researched on the planet.

We Have Powerful Friends: Kara Colton, his twin sister. Even though he was her twin she watched out for him and kept him safe and protected him from their abusive father.

Other Stuff: Thunderstruck. This song fits my character perfect.

I've GM'd a Star Wars FFG game here on RPGX but unfortunately the game died out. Also, I have played in a Star Wars FFG game on Roll20 for the pre game for the podcast Dice For Brains. I played a KelDor Consular spec'd as a healer. I also played in a couple of tabletop groups too.

Added Background, Obligation, Motivations(at the top), and Character Creation(at the bottom) to Dagg's application.

I got a question about skills. Starting as a Fringer I can choose two out of these four skills as career skills with +1 rank: Astrogation, Coordination, Negotiation, and Streetwise. I chose Negotiation and Streetwise. I have Astrogation already as a career skill. My question is:
  • Will Coordination become a career skill even if I did not pick it? Or will it be listed as a Non-career skill if I wanted to get it latter?

Edit: I might drop Slicing and raise up my skills some more. Mainly choose to add Slicing because I figured Mako could have taught him a thing or two for when she's not around to help. And I might change the 3rd point in Intellect to Presence. Unsure which would be better at this time.

That's a good point. The system does seem to be a bit flexible with it's terms and most GMs are open to interpreting the class roles in a variety of ways. A peaceful trader seems more like an explorer though, instead of just an interpretation of a smuggler.

Speaking of it, I just noticed that we got a smuggler/pilot application and the fringer/slicer also knows piloting. I guess that makes my characters' skills in piloting pretty unoriginal. Maybe I'll rework the character as a hired gun or something. A Twi'lek hired gun. I like it for if no other reason than it's a bit unexpected. I had actually been considering one already - or maybe an assassin. But then, I'd also considered playing a doctor. The problem with the colonist and explorer, IMO, in that they're not adventurers. There's very little reason for one to actually be on an epic space adventure against the first order. Yes, they're useful in some circumstances but definitely not when it comes to shooting at things.

@girlplay:
Dagg can only pilot from point A to point B reasonably well without crashing. If he ever tried to pull a Han Solo and flew into an asteroid belt, there would be a brown stain on his brown pants shortly before there was a quiet explosion in space as he crashed into an asteroid

@Silk: Ew!

Application
left-aligned image

Name: Nima
Species: Twi’lek (f)
Career / specialization: hired gun / mercenary soldier
Character background

Formative event: Nima’s mother was a slave dancer who gained her freedom when Nima was 8 years old to prevent her child from suffering the same fate. They reunited with Nima's father and formed a conventional family unit, able to live on their own terms. This became something of a family motto and an ideal Nima was taught to strive for independence and freedom.

Career choice: Nima's parents were traders who eventually bought their own ship and lived as free merchants traveling wherever opportunity for profit took them. In time, Nima learned enough to become a useful crew member and even operated the gun once in a while. A teenager behind a ship's weapon made a lot of crew members nervous but that's the level of trust that her parents put in her. She grew to love the freedom of traveling the stars and thrill of seeing new places. Her time on Bakura turned her into a mercenary.

Skills: Nima is charming and cool under pressure. She’s always made friends quickly and easily since she never stayed in one place for very long. The alternative, having no friends, was unpalatable to her. She turned into a bit of a gun-nut when her father eventually let her shoot, though she's awful at anything technical. Math is not her friend.

Location: Bakura. Nima's happy life all came to a sudden end at Bakura. The local authorities arrested her parents for violation of interstellar trade restrictions and confiscated their ship. Luckily, Nima was off running errands at the time or she might have been arrested as well. She’s been on the planet surface for 6 months now, while her parents went to trial and were convicted. True independence has now been thrust upon her and she had to find her own way (maybe with a little help).

My friend: On Bakura, Nima connected with a small clan of Twi’leks who welcomed her in. Her personal sponsor and friend is an older Twi’lek named Hirani, who is a local weapons expert. She has been able to train Nima and help her find enough mercenary work to stay afloat financially but that well will dry up eventually. Plus, Nima doesn't like having to rely on her mentor or the clan and wants to find her own way.

Other stuff:
  • Motivation: Her love of freedom and the treatment of her parents has instilled in Nima an anti-corporate, anti-fascist sentiment. She has a problem with anybody who has too much power and influence and wields it to the detriment of ordinary people.
  • Quirk: Twi'leks are adapted to hot, dry environments. Nima is always cold anywhere else. She tried to bundle up and stay warm but it's a constant struggle. Bakura's weather (wet and temperate) is very disheartening to her.
  • Skillset: She'll definitely have some skill in Ranged weapons, Gunnery, and Charm. Maybe some cross-class levels in Cool. A splash of Leadership sounds good too. And some Athletics or Coordination would also be nice. For stats, I'll probably specialize in Agility and Presence.
  • Theme song: Bad Girl

Rule familiarity: I’m pretty familiar with the Edge of the Empire rules. So far, I’ve been in 5 games on this site, though none of them have lasted very long. I GM’d one game here but the players all left within a few months.

A few more details:
  • What does your character know about the Force? What do they believe?
"May the Force be with you" is a nice sentiment, like saying "bless you" when somebody sneezes. It's an old superstition that's probably brings some people comfort that they're not just in this galaxy alone but have some 'force' (literally) that's influencing things. Even if the stories of the Jedi are true, they were just a very few people in a galaxy of quadrillions of being, and therefore hardly significant.
  • Does your character have any alliances politically? What do they think about the other groups?
As a freelance mercenary, Nima was taught to ignore her own political views while on the job. Personally, she resents any group that has too much sway over people's lives, especially if they abuse their position of power.
  • Does your character have a significant regret that haunts them? What about an accomplishment that they are proud of?
Regrets: Nima regrets not being able to do something to help her parents and feels that she abandoned them, even if she couldn't really have done anything practically speaking. Accomplishments: Nima feels that she has yet to make her mark and her accomplishments are yet to come.
  • Does your character have many acquaintances around the galaxy, a small but close-knit group of friends, or something in between? How does you character generally want to be viewed by others, and what do they do to promote that image?
Nima has many friends and regards some of them as being close, including her former shipmates and the people of the clan that welcomed her in. She tries to remain in the good graces of most everyone she meets, being kind and polite whenever possible. She'd rather be loved than feared and resorts to a blaster (for intimidation) only as a last resort. She wants people to like her and enjoys the company of others.
  • Was your character around during the Galactic Civil War (roughly 25 years ago)? What do they remember most about that time? Has that experience affected them in a significant way?
Nima is too young to have been around during the time of the war. The only things that she knows about it were stories told to her by her parents. Nima respects and admires what the rebels did in standing up to the tyrannical Empire.

Coordination would remain a career skill for you and therefore it would cost half as much XP to buy ranks in it.

One other thing worth mentioning; the most efficient way to buy these skills would be to pick two ranks of the things which appear in both your career and specialisation. You mentioned, for example, that Astrogation appears in both. If you take both free ranks you’re saving 15XP, whereas if you took Astrogation in career and another skill for your spec (say Streetwise), that would only be two skills at rank 1, so 10XP. Of course in the great scheme of things these 5XP savings won’t make much difference, but I just thought I should say.

@Lazer
Thanks and yea, I thought of that and did contemplate getting Astrogation to rank two for no XP cost. I'd lose the rank in Negotiation, but it's something Dagg can live without I think. And like you said, it would still be a class skill.

A Star Wars campaign... AND Edge of the Empire to boot. The posting rate looks like it'd mesh well with my schedule, so I'm definitely down for tossing in a character!

I have to familiarize myself with Edge of the Empire (finally an excuse :P) but I've played the SAGA edition to near-death so I'm looking forward to it.
