[3.P] The Inquisition of Adrens Vale

APPLICATIONS WILL CLOSE APRIL 25TH

Game Name[3.P] The Inquisition of Adrens Vale
Game SystemDnD 3.5e
ThemeChurch inquisition
FlavourDark, gritty and mysterious. Soldiers of light in a hostile land, send to rout corruption from a community.
Plot SummaryIt was a dark and rainy night, the type that herald winter, and the only other noise for miles around was the solitary hoofbeat of a dark riders steed. A horn blew in the distance as the rain drenched rider pounded through the front gates of his lord of lights holy church, and stumbling from the hearty beast he rushed into the inner sanctum, breaking into the high priests ante chamber.

Five heads in all turned at the intrusion, the leaders of the righteous lords active sects, and one voice range out amongst the outrage. "What is the meaning of this?" Roared a man clad head to toe in gleaming plate armor. Even in the dimly lit room his form glowed with mystical power, which made his towering form even more intimidating.

Stumbling to a knee, the black rider called out, voice echoing through the room, "Pardons my lord protector, but there is urgent news from the Ring." Silence filled the room, and with trembling voice he said, "The ring is compromised. My journey took me from northern Cret to the southern most plateau of Hveland, with but a single stop in the ring for respite. When my company and I arrived the safehouse was ill maintained, by no means the shape it should have remained with the brothers stationed there, so with blades drawn my men breached our lords sanctum." There's another long moment of silence. The wind outside whips and the pitter patter of rain on the stained glass windows filled the room.

Somewhere off in the distance lightning cracked and echoed to the chamber. "What in the lords light happened damnit!" roared another leader, the skirmisher known as "Huntsman". His scarred face in a perpetual scowl, he slowly walked forward, growling, "You are wasting our time, spit it out and be gone." With tension in the still air, the rider choked out, "When we entered the building we were assaulted by the stench of stagnant, decayed flesh. Arnsten, Hrolf and Baern lay in bloody chunks near the western wall, their holy symbols melted into their eyes. Beyond the the scent of decay, Bloodhound could smell corruption. We fanned out to search for survivors, and when we reached the sanctum....." the man girded all in black choked a moment, making it clear the water dripping from his face was not from the rain. Wiping his face with the edge of his hood, he slowly said, "We reached the Bastion, and when we opened the door, the alters were gone. In their places were Gedden, Shale and Rosche were ran through with metal spikes and and pinned in Macabre mockery of our lords."

All about the room the heads exchanged sickened and worried glances, and several prays rang into the room. "What happened next?" Asked High Priest Erban of the combat medics, hand slowly rotating the sun lords symbol in his palm.

"We set about removing the men and giving them all proper burial. I was dispatched with our healthiest horse to bring a message to you lords telling of the dire situation. but when I re entered the main chamber, Arnsten, Hrolf and Baern were no longer resting against the wall. They were standing with weapons bare, and staring at me with with unwavering silver orbs. By the time I could draw my estoc they were upon me. Were it not for Allaurin, I would have fell, but his powerful bow struck true and sent the closest stumbling backwards. The rest of the men engaged, and we were pressing back these unholy beasts whom had possessed our brothers, but the tides soon turned, as the three pinned to the alter joined the fray. I barely managed to escape that day. My men are all dead and in gods know what state. This is the message I bring to you; we believe that Adrens Vale is under the control of dark powers. There have been no witches in the land since the great inquisition. We thought we drove them all out, or slayed them all, but it seems that some being beyond the vale has brought dark worship back to the land."

All at once the room erupted into heated debate. The militant minded said suit up and ride forth, cleansing the Vale in holy fire, while those planning persuaded said they should merely wait and see if this was not a single act of wanna be deicide. As the voices grew louder into the night, a single word set the assembled men and women quiet. From the head of the table the Elder High Priest of Pelors clergy stood, his old bones almost audibly creaking, and said, "This is not an act which can be handled passively or with brute force. Like the inquisition of old, we must call upon our special servants to find the most unknown but capable loyalists we can muster. If we were to send "hand" or his men, or Lord Protector or his, the news would reach Adrens Vale before they did. Send riders to all of your steads. Bring in your most trusted junior recruits, we need men and women of strong body and mind, but most of all, we need those who understand what is at stake here, in this time of darkness."

Turning his head to meet the eyes of the rider, the weak voiced cleric quietly croaked out, "You will lead these men to the Vale. And you will have your chance to reap your vengeance upon these blasphemers whom took your brothers souls and cast them into oblivion." With eyes full of hatred, the rider bowed slowly, parting the congregation with a mere, "As you wish my lord," before bringing his hood up, and against the backdrop of crackling lightning, disappeared into the blackness of the night........

Intro for the playersHello everyone, Welcome to my game. If you are reading this, thank you for chewing through that summary. I am looking for four players, maybe five if I'm having an especially hard time deciding. Character Gen rules will be as follows:
-stats will be rolled upon acceptance into the game. Please DO NOT roll in this thread.
-any material from 1st party 3.5 and pathfinder books are allowed, with the stipulation that if there are things with the same name, you must use the 3.5 version. Most other things are fair game (assuming a tolerable level of cheese), and 3rd party will be allowed on a case by case basis.
-We will be starting at level three, with 4,000 gold pieces to spend. You work for a very powerful organisation (a collective of all the churches of the goodly gods.), so you will have somewhat accelerated funds.
-The technology level is early blackpowder, which means there is some gun technology. There are rules for this in the Pathfinder SRD, and as such, the early guns are allowed.
-Since I said both 3.5 and pathfinder are allowed, I should elaborate that characters will be built using the 3.5 rules.
-{new} one flaw is allowed at character gen, chosen from the list in the SRD.
{new} After some thought, I've decided to use the pathfinder skill list.

If there is anything I have missed, feel free to ask.

As to the game itself. This will be a fairly dark and gritty game. You will, metaphorically speaking, be behind enemy lines. Subtlety and guile will be a great help to you, but combat ability may end up being necessary. When you build your characters, making a fairly rounded one will be useful, as this game may push you into uncomfortable (in game only, hopefully) situations.

Application format
Your characters are members of the Order of the Righteous Body; a collective of goodly and just churches that scour the land in search of witches and practitioners of dark magics. As it was in medieval Europe though, this doesn't mean you must necessarily be a good person. You are not restricted to a good alignment, all I ask is that your character hold some loyalty to the order. The application format should be as follows:

Name/branch: I want to know your name, and which branch of the Body you are of. (information on them below)
Race: pretty straightforward.
Class: Any and all classes and/or alternate class features/archetypes, as well as a general role in the party.
Description: looks, personality...all that jazz goes here.
Background/qualifications: Tell me a little bit about your characters past; what brought him into the churches service and what qualifies you for this sort of mission.
The Gamer: if you have anything you wish to tell me about yourself, go for it! I always enjoy hearing about my potential players. I would also like your (tentative) availability. I know no one can predict the future, but just a"I can probably post X times a week," will suffice.

The order of the Righteous Body
Head: The metaphorical brain of the organization are the priests and diviners of the gods of knowledge. Many spend much of their time within the Seer rooms that have been built into nearly every temple across the land, though some are active pilgrims who commune with the church via magical medium. Their leader is arch bishop of Boccob, Vedon Hawthorne, a man of unknown age, but most like some number into thew hundreds. Appearing human, no one really understands how he has maintained life so long, but the acolytes and priests beneath him consider every day he wakes a boon in the ongoing search for corruption.

Heart: The main core of healers in the bodies clergy, the chapter of the Heart specializes in healing properties. While they do have some defenders that protect the priests, most of them enlist in military squadrons to aid on the battle field, or they're travelers who journey through the land lending aid where they can. Their leader is a young elven priestess of Ehlonna who actively travels the land, a member her retainer, a diviner specialist named caddagin, allowing her to do so and keep in touch with her underlings.

The shield: The temple and village defenders make up this branch. Led by a man known only as Lord Protector, The Shield protects those within the folds of the order, basically any civilization that upholds the tenants of their gods. Though some of the more martial minded clerics join this order, many other men, both divinely imbued and completely mundane, make up this branches numbers. From time to time these specialized warriors are sanctioned to work with the Hand.

Hand: The hand is the black sheep of the organisation. It is they who act as the swift striking enforcers, with only the most basic of guidelines to follow, most if it being "seek and cleanse the known blasphemers." They spend many months at a time away from temples, hunting, tracking and dispatching enemies of the faith by any means necessary. The churches, devoted to many other causes, tend to glaze over their actions, as long as no harm come to their dependants. They are led by a man merely known as the Huntsman. He is an ex-Alceskan commando, who, after being discharged, joined the clergy and worked his way to head tracker. His scowling visage and hot temper as well as his lack of compassion has brought a number of complaints to his methods, but his success rates have fairly quieted those voices.

1st party is anything made by wizards of the coast. Companies like green ronin and white wolf are third party.

so, no natural lycanthrope (3 levels in werewolf only) character?

its just a query,
most likely going to make an afflicted lycanthrope aware of his condition.(Im willing to make it unaware to make the game interesting.)If he knows of this affliction, he will turn from lawful neutral to true neutral alignment. one level in (mysterious)ranger.

A couple of questions:
1. Will be a character following my vows in the signature be OK for this campaign?
2. What is the starting level?
3. Curious as to why it is 3.5e as base with additions of new stuff from PF, and not the other way around given game improvements in PF - any particular reasons? I'm still new to PBP RPG and also PF, so do pardon me if the answer is obvious.

1) If you want, go for it. I wont restrict your choice to play your character as you see fit.
2) starting level is three with 4,000 gold.
3)while 3.5 isn't perfect, I still find it by far and away better then pathfinder. That being said, pathfinder has some cool stuff, which is why I have no problem letting it fly. They also have a much better third party community, and some excellent publishers.

Thanks for your reply!

1) As long as I won't be a liability to the party to the point it upsets the gaming experience for everyone.
2) Got it - thanks!
3) Would you consider amalgamating some of the skills like PF has? That way we can create characters that are well-rounded.

Another question: 4) Would you allow two flaws? I am contemplating an exalted character with Sacred Vow and Vows of Poverty, Nonviolence and Peace - the extra two feats at 1st level make the build much more playable.

Skills really shouldn't be a problem, nor a defining feature, and if it is the latter, your class will have the necessary skill points for it. As to the flaws, it's not something I normally allow, as the flaw list is terrible, but I could probably do one. Will amend the OP with that.

Name: Zev'r Kiyiya (ze-veir Key-ee-ya) [nick name: Zev or KiKi] of the Hand
Note: he does not like being called KiKi
Race: Half-elf

Class:2 afflicted lycan 1 mysterious ranger (sneaky sneaky bastard or hit and runner)

Desc: Zev'r Kiyiya has black hair though sometimes it shone with a chest-nutty hue in the sunlight, most people who he meet often mistake him to be quite a few years younger due to his rather youthful complexion. He often is seen wearing light armor with a green cloak that had red lining along the edges. He can be a friendly chap at times, but when it comes to work, he can get dead serious. He can get frustrated easily and will verbally lash out at people once annoyed enough.(WIP)

Background:Placeholder

The Gamer: I can post up to about 1-5 times a day, though what usually happens is that I Wait 5 times a day.

I'm confused on the 3.5 as the base as opposed to pathfinder. If we use a sorcerer for example, would we use the cool and flavorful pathfinder version, or the gimped wizard 3.5 version?

I ask because the pathfinder classes, for the most part are more powerful than their 3.5 counterparts at base... if we use 3.5 classes as base...

would the class inquisitor be acceptable?

Because in reality, the only classes that got stronger were the casters, while meanwhile the mundanes got a bunch of relatively useless extra abilities, and any of the stronger combat styles got nerfed into the ground, because Sean K Reynolds hates people who don't use magic. There are still bloodlines in 3.5, which is basically what the PF jumping off point was, and they can be found in the SRD.
/rant

But yes, the inquisitor would be fine.
