Ase keeps his eyes open and his head on a swivel. Even though he is new to guarding he knows observations are the key to anything. He’s particularly interested in the human, Anuk. He’s always interested in observing a humans and their interactions with other people.

RaazAs soon as she had a brief idea of who a few of the people were Raaz got to work on filling their drinks. She made sure to take her time, not speak unless spoken to, and be as quiet as she knew she could be. The extent of her conversations were asking if someone wanted a refill, but also trying not to stay too long at any one table.

While the prince intrigued her purely for his stance, she was curious more so about who would be drinking more, and less tight lipped. She hoped by filling up their beverages would get them to start talking faster, though so far the Prince and the mage seemed like *sses who treated those beneath them like every other royal person Raaz heard of. For now, she'd keep an eye on the Prince and the mages.

VoitlejaAlthough his sharp hearing could easily pick up on what the people on stage were saying, all Voitleja could do was try his best to remember the onslaught of unknown names and places. He had a vague idea that a prince was some sort of leader, but had no idea what he could be the prince of. They all seemed to know each other, which felt right to Voitleja. Hearing a group of leaders speaking familiarly about the time they had spend apart reminded him of home and put him slightly more at ease.

The talk about northerners was something he could find more purchase on, assuming they were talking about people like Gici. Perhaps the state that had overtaken the madman was not unique?

Having spent almost all her life in the Towers studying magic, Bezra knew little about the factions or history of Vionne, let alone the lands beyond. She was curious about the prince's statement about an assassination attempt, but she was reluctant to speak up, and instead listened carefully.

Purano, Outside the Great Ziggurat, Month of PeaceTay To Wei, the Prince from the rocky Islands to the west spun an exciting yarn about how Apiarian Assassins had tried to kill him when he was visiting one of the religious monasteries he had founded in his function as Priest of Priests of Taytomac. Some of the other important people on the platform had casually moved closer to the Getta as he chatted with the Uxian High Mage Aarz Ley.

"In any case, my brother is the one really miffed about the whole affair. Water, come on over here." Water apparently denominated the older Brother of the Prince, Eng. The stern looking tall man stomped over with a frown on his hairy face, but gave a courteous nod to the Vinionan Magicians.

"The young Prince is grandiosely overstating his place in this story, without his Guard he would be dead now." With a hand he indicated a tall Gettan woman hovering near the younger Prince, her advanced age indicated by the greying hair on her snout and around her eyes. She also wore an armour of lacquered wood, yet hers was decidedly less ornamented and more well worn by far.

Eng continued to address the mages in the meantime in a sligthly moody way. "No offense, but I believe it is foolish to discuss this here and now. Yet I can't deny that the Tower in Ling-Te has been of a great benefit to furthering the knowledge of both of our Nations."

Anuk, the human Ambassador from Bazzro meanwhile rolled his eyes at Zaqrah in a theatrical way. Obviously he had also been listening in to the talk of the royals. His companion Parthyia, the heavily clothed Keita from Lutheya spoke up next in a way obviously meant to change the subject. "Well, the refugees have some upsides. Business has been good these past years with them around. All they want to do is work work work - then they usually pool their money to buy or build a ship, no matter how small, just to get further away from the countries they came from with some independence recovered. It's cute, really."

A Message:Those with minds that were drifting off due to all the idle chatter maybe turned their heads towards the square just as a rider appeared from around a corner. As the figure pushed through the crowd quite forcefully it became clearer that it was a lean Uxian clinging to a panting Lama. Yet they pushed ever on, straight for the Platform.

As the rider was already very close he was spotted by more and more of the dignitaries on the platform. Mehrdi, the councilman and master of ceremonies had moved up to Jo'Seph and the other guards at the entrance to signal them that the man was to be admitted, for whatever reason. Maybe he felt the unwavering focus and determination of the strange rider.

The Rider evidently made the crowd very nervous. The carousing had stopped in large parts of it, and while it was not quiet by any means the drop in volume was eerie. As the man jumped off his horse and ran up on the platform with a frozen look of determination on his face it seemed like most of the celebrants below were staring up at him. "I come with a message.", he almost whispered - his energies seemingly muffled by the crowd pressing in on the platform.

The Councilman and his peers led the man into a corner to receive it, even though each and every one that was up there seemed to edge closer to the happenings. Those that could not hear would be told in minutes.

"The North, Managh Island, has been attacked by an unknown force, for an unknown reason." The words of the messenger were calm, orderly, his face blank of any emotion. He probably had rehearsed it endlessly, or it he was just relaying what had been dictated by someone else word for word. Managh Island, as most people on here knew or could learn with a quick question, was an island off Vinione proper and part of the Free City of Dimi. There was more to be told still.

"They came in crystal ships - many of them - carrying humans and towering monsters. They slung blue Fire at Meshkou and landed in town. Many were killed in the first hour by magic or sword, the rest either fled south to Bura or hid in Meshkou castle to be besieged. This was nine days ago. Dimi begs for aid. This is all I know, though more messengers will certainly follow."

Even after some probing it turned out it really was all the man knew, having received the message in Dimi from a Bura messenger in a relay race against time. Many a pig, lama was wasted to deliver the information fast, in addition to five dozen sailors rowing day and night for four days in shifts.

The Dignitaries were in shock - the crowd below was starting to boil with rage trying to learn what had been discussed on the platform. As seemingly all of Purano pressed against the barriers shouting for answers Councilman Mehrdi decided he needed to give it to them. He stepped up on a chair clumsily and shouted into the crowd: "WAR! Dimi is besieged and Purano goes to War!"

The immediate aftermath:The crowd roared just for release. It seemed bizzarely just an extension of the general revelry, life and death intertwined in a macabre dance. Yet it was enough to satisfy them for the time being. The platform would not be crushed and the Dignitaries stomped to death, so they dispersed and clumped into their individual groups to chatter about the news.

The councilmen seemed already to be forging plans for battle, while the foreign dignitaries stood about mostly silent. Only the two To'Ari sent by Haze-Lo and Hetmon stood close to each other whispering. Anuk and Parthyia stood away from them even further, with guards blatantly flanking them. Their origin nations were obviously being already suspected as being the culprit or at least coordinator.

The Triumvirate of the Arcane Towers was whispering each other too, and even the two as of yet completely unnoticed emissaries of the other magical associations of Purano - the house of the free mind and the transmutators - were standing in their circle to listen, in addition to Bezra and Qarra.

It was Primarius Gamba who spoke after throwing a strange look Bezras way. "This is highly troubling, as we can all agree. Both the Tower and the House have called Dimi their home for a long time, and we do not know if this adversary will seek to destroy our presence there. It may be time to abandon the truce we have made never to meddle in the wars of these lands again. It could be our downfall."

Zaqrah the Uxian trader did not seem like he intended to join any of the whispering conspiratory groups, yet whisper he did. He talked quietly into the earhole of Nergui, his Tsing Goun Captain of the Guard, for a full minute while she listened wordlessly, not even nodding at what he was telling her. When Zaqrah was done he smiled thinly and slapped the Vulture lightly on the shoulder before descending the stairs to be escorted away by the two Guards that had been left below, Rauthga and Pari.

Nergui had motioned Voitleja and Ase (and Tham for that matter) not to depart with him though, and stepped over towards them all. "I've been promoted. Assume you might soon be as well. We need to start recruiting."

As for Raaz - she would have much to tell. And in addition to that fact another thought was not far from her mind: Even though she had no knowledge of the magical gem that Nergui was carrying over her breast just a few steps away, her ears rang with the word Crystal. Opportunities galore. The same went for Jo'Seph if he played his cards right.

"These strange ships are indeed troubling. We need more information, and someone needs to oppose those raiders. I would be willing to join if we are gathering to act against them, but I'm not a particularly skilled leader."
No time to worry about the blood moon-a war zone is a far more immediate threat. Perhaps these raiders are somehow related to the blood moon, and even if they aren't, someone needs to stand up to them.

Bezra listened quietly but closely. As a member of the Towers, albiet a junior one, it would not do for her to become involved in a clash between nations without the sanction of her leaders, lest her actions reflect upon the Towers.

Personally, she resented these raiders. Information on the greatest magical find of the century had been delivered literally to their doorstep, and now the were being drawn away. Bezra did not want to think of herself as cold or unfeeling, but magical lore always came first to her.

Bezra was a loyal member of the Towers, and she would follow the directions of the Primarii. If they felt that this attack pre-empted work on the monolith and magic stones, then she would do her best to see the enemies burned to ashes as expeditiously as possible.

Raaz
Through the chaos of the room Raaz attempted to step close enough to hear some of the battle plans as she filled up glasses. Though she was technically no longer on the job, she would want to know more about the crystal that was spoken of.

Part of her wondered if joining the cause would get her closer, but she also would had to work for the guard. She didn't want anyone to know she had a skill set that would be beneficial to something that could get her killed, even though being a thief had it's own risks, at least she usually made her own rules.

After about twenty minutes she walked down to search for her temporary boss to share what she had found.

AseAse is taken aback by the immediate change in the energy of the surrounding area. His immediate reaction to leave and find some community to help them through this war, either with guidance, wisdom of the lands or both was driven out of him. This isn’t the first time a skirmish or battle has broken out, and not the first time he’s led people through. However, this time was prophecied and he has been called to step up to a new level. This is what Bomsyl wanted me to hear and take part in. I’m no warrior though. Or a military leader for that matter. I’m not sure what I can do but try. Just on a larger scale than before.

He moves towards Voitleja and gets his attention. “This must be what Bomsyl warned about. I trusted and acted on his visions, not because I blindly believed him, but because as a scholar I was curious. As a teacher and believer in something bigger than me, something the size of the world, I had to try to help. There is too much aligning for his vision to be false. So I can tell you, I think I’m going to try to serve or find some way to help out in this war. I know he didn’t want you to turn your back on it. I believe, for now, this is our calling. What do you say?

VoitlejaWar.

The word echoed though Voitleja's head as the crowd roared in response, the deafening din of the massed voices whiting out his sonar for a moment before he adjusted. Though even as he did, his senses remained fuzzy and indistinct, his normally impeccable hearing muffled by the sound of blood rushing through his body.

War.

The pulsing sound put him in the mind of the drums of his homeland, loud and deep and rhythmic. He had never heard a drum beat for combat, but he knew what they sounded like, knew from his dreams. They sounded like this, like the beating of a massive heart, like the massive heart of Tappa when the god appeared in Voitleja's dreams. Although he was not there of course, not physically, Voitleja could feel his presence, like a mighty tree towering over the Seene. Standing behind him, supporting him, pushing him forward. Forward into battle.

War!

He pushed through the fog of his scattered thoughts to focus on what Nergui was telling him. Promotions and recruitment... both words he knew but had no practical experience with. He would ask about that, later, when his head was clearer. His fingers closed even tighter around the handle of his glaive, the wood creaking under the pressure.

WAR!

Ase was speaking to him now, and he turned to face the smaller man, finding it slightly easier now to focus on his words. He nodded in response, the movement quicker than his usual deliberate motions. "Yes. This is my path, I am sure of it," he said, his voice deep and slow as always. He paused for a moment. "Without you, I may not have had the courage to follow it. So thank you. I am glad you will be walking it with me, at least for a time."

ThamIdle and half-attentive for most of the time, Tham began to wander form the gate's ticket ticket checking peer and into the crowd. At this point he merely mingled and laughed among those partaking in the tom-foolery of the streets.

Once the Llama riding Uxian arrived. the Keita's eye locked into place. However, his attention was to the creature the would-be messenger was riding. It seemed to have been pushed rather hard. What an inefficient method of travel to rely on another creature for hasty movment. His thoughts quickly snapped back as the uxian began to speak.

Tham's jaw dropped. He wasn't sure how serious the situation was. Was he going to have to fight? Was he going to die? Was he going to miss out on bar room rants and dancing girls?
Not if he didn't die. Not if he wasn't doing nothing so he could return to a home that would supply the things he loved.

He adjusted, regaining his composure, but instead of joining the crowds sudden burst of confusing sounds and emotional fervor, he squeezed through the crowd to seek out familiar companions... Turns out Voitleja and Ase were the first he could make his way to.

With staff raised high, he made his way to the two waving to get their attention.

"Hey! Are we going to fight?" He asked with a mix of fear and purpose. "Can we win?"

He was no warrior in the traditional sense, but he was sure...on appearance alone, that Voitleja was. And since Ase was able to speak to the warrior easily, obviously Ase was a warrior to. He had begun making wild assumptions to ease his mind in order to cope with what he perceived as a world changing altercation.

Purano, Outside the Great Ziggurat, Month of Peace
-As Raaz moved closer to the Councilmen of the city they paid her little mind but gladly received any liquid she would pour into their cup. Some of them threw the most cursory glance her way to make sure she had the sand coloured cap on her head marking her as an attendant.

Soon it became apparent that most of the Council - includid Mehrdi, the Uxian Head of Ceremonies for the festival this year - agreed that Purano needed to gather an army from the citizens in good standing to send forth towards Dimi in the north to aid them with the defence of their northernmost holdings.

Not everybody agreed about what size of aid was appropriate though. While some were arguing to send away each and every war galley that could be mustered others wanted to have the majority of the standing army and able bodied citizens to remain in Purano - a symbolic few ships should do. Some of the councilmen were most likely just stingy or craven, yet a small but vocal minority was also shouting about traps and treachery, misinformation and lies.

None of the Councilmen had a clear idea who these raiders could be, although there were some voices speaking what more were bound to be thinking: Surely a force of humans could have only come from Bazzro or Lutheya - the Human Nations were far too distant. The crystal ships were not discussed, thought of as a fanciful detail in the description of a terrible attack.

As Raaz left little had been officially decided, but that at least a small official Puranese Army would issue forth seemed clear. With all the bickering it may be a while before that happened though. Still, she had much to tell her temporary employer, and hopefully would even get her bonus. If she ran fast she could be the first to deliver the message of war as well.

-Bezra in turn was also quietly listening to a discussion, although it was the Primarii of the Arcane Towers, the various dignitaries of the House of the Free Mind, Transmutators Academies and even one Gettan Speaker, of which Bezra knew next to nothing, apart from the fact that their magic was organised in a much different way than what she herself was practising.

Dalshed, the most elderly of the Towers Triumvirate was first to respond to what Gamba had proposed - an interference in the war by the Magical Groups of the Broken Bridge.

"A Mogh does not wage war ... any more. Our Predecessors decided this over two hundred years ago." After the statement the wrinkled Ux shrunk into himself, a wide toothless and content grin on his face. Aarz Ley was merely frowning while some of the other magic users nearby were wispering amongst themselves spinning theories about who the attackers could be more than what was to be done by them specifically.

Gamba still retained his icy stare directed at Primarius Dalshed, who in turn seemed completely unperturbed by it. The elder of the two broke the silence first. "Yet... Yet there is nothing wrong with those of our order that are so inclined to volunteer their time to aid Citizens of this City as they march into war. In the same way that selling a potion to a soldier is not forbidden, and why would it be."

It should have pleased Gamba, but he only shook his head as if weary of the old man. While Aarz Ley was still squinting his eyes in confusion as to what was happening right now Gamba tried to cut the discussion short. "Yes yes, of course. And should a Mogh attach himself to an army to lend aid - shield and heal the sick, conjure water and food and so on and so forth - could he not defend himself if he accidentally happened to end up in the thick of the fight? He could."

Briefly Gamba looked over to Aarz Ley, who seemed to nod almost imperceptably while retaining a pained look on his face, before making eye contact with Bezra as he said these last words. "So at least for our order there is nothing in the laws that forbids a member in good standing to join the war effort while there are enemies at our doorstep, and it may be prudent to do so lest the Tower in Dimi should be shattered."

It looked like Gamba may have more to say on the matter. The strange expression on his grey face as he looked over at Bezra seemed to her like it may well have something to do with the strange gem that was being carried by the Tsing Goun Soldier standing not far from them.

-And over there with the guards Nergui the Vulturwoman and Captain of Zaqrahs Personal Guard seemed to have heard what Jo'Seph had spoken aloud. The rugged female turned to study the To'Ari briefly with a curious look in her ebony avian eyes. "From the sound of your accent you are not a Puranese Citizen, nor from Vinione. If you can swing that sword of yours we could very well use you..."

Briefly she glanced over at Voitleja before finishing her thought. "... in Zaqrahs Irregulars. If I know my employer we will be very soon moving northwards. In fact he left just now to see if there are war galleys and artillery weapons for sale in the city. You can come with us to recruit more men right now, we will need plenty."

Turning back towards Voitleja and Aze Nergui seemed momentarily a bit confused by the almost intimate words the two were exchanging. She scratched the base of her black cracked beak as she waited for them to finished, at a loss for words.

"You two can also come with me to recruit soldiers. We need to fetch a lot, so anybody that's able bodied and not likely to run away the first night will do," was what she finally said roughly.

When Tham came running up she seemed to shake off her brief moment of confusion and turned towards the Keita to answer his questions. "Yes...," was what she had to say about the first part before she mulled the second part over. Finally she continued, her voice loud and clear. "... and yes, if you stick with us. You have magic at your disposal, right? You need to tell me what you can do eventually, so I can see where to put you. But first."

Stepping over to the railing of the Platform Nergui leaned onto it and cawed a loud birdlike shriek at the mass of shifting people below, urging a few of them to silence. Then the Tsing Goun shouted blindly at anybody that would listen: "If any of you want to fight this war, fight it now and fight it good then join the Zaqrah Irregulars! Soon there will be someone to sign you up at every large market and square. Get your swords and enlist, or enlist and get a sword! Good pay and the chance to kill the scum that would grasp for what isn't theirs!"

The response was a mild murmur going through the crowd and a few shouts. Plenty of people seemed to have heard at least, including Bezra.

Later that Day - The Flute and Diplomat
Raaz met up with her Employer under an hour later after crossing the river back over to reenter the gloomy bodega beneath a residential building. It seemed as if the Apiarian had barely moved, a few tin mugs on the bar in front of her.

Naja listened to all the facts that Raaz would relay to her with an unreadable expression on her face, largely due to her oversized insect eyes and chitinous face. After everything had been told the Apiarian settled her tiny on the counter of the bar and studied Raaz for a brief moment. When she spoke her voice was clear, no trace of the spirits she had gulped down recently.

"I see. This is big stuff. Grand Scale that. But War is money, and the snakes will want to get in on it." With a nod of her head she prompted the barkeep to place a sack of coin on the counter. "This is fifty, you earned it." More than what was promised by far, though apparently prepared beforehand.

Naja lost no time in moving to the next order of business - future employment. "So listen, you are free to go and do whatever you want to do, and I can hook you up with some small opportunities along the way. But this is what I'm thinking: Everybody in the City wants to know what is going on up North. I'll have to ask around, but I don't think anybody saw this coming. The Open Eye would have known... maybe even the Ahriman. We got to get up there, we need to be in the thick of it."

She was talking fast now, but kept her voice reasonably quiet. The bar was almost empty as it had been before anyway. "So this is the problem. I could maybe get a boat eventually. Take you, or anybody else I can find up the coast to have a look at what is happening. But not today, nor tomorrow - every trader is running off and every war galley is being bought by would be mercenaries and the armies of the city. If you want to move soon you need to enlist with one of them. They always need scouts or archers, something out of the way."

"This is all too big, every Chapter of the Snakes will be sending fake and real soldiers, scrambling over each other. I would go myself, but I have rackets to run, things tying me down. I'm telling you because you don't."

The "Cruyphead", Purano Docks, at the same timeFrederick had arrived in Purano only today. It had not been his first Crossing of the Broken Sea this way, not by far, but it had been amongst his most violent. A fews days earlier a cold and strangely violent storm had hit the boat that he was serving on while on the open sea, and it had caused some mild damage to the structure and large damage to the nerves of the whole crew. When he saw the glorious blue and gold glazed tiles and sculptures of the Arches of Adin the Apiarian could not rouse the same enthusiasm about seeing Purano again.

So after he had received his pay and all his private belongings he went straight out in search of a tavern that would prepare the kind of food fit for an Apiarian, which was rich but meatless. In the "Cruyphead" he found his quarry not much later, and settled into a booth to have a stew that seemed to consist mostly of potato, leeks, molten cheese and white wine. All in all not unpleasant. It was there that news of a strange war reached him that apparently was happening just this moment at the northernmost island still belonging to Vinione. At the time he did not think much of it, and continued his meal.

When that was finished he had a drink or two, talked with the locals and listened to a few tales, when the door flew open and a wizened To'Ari with the scaly skin the colour of sand stomped in. "I need at least three men who can captain a war galley. Hardy men, brave, to go to war north, but I need them now."

His proposition was met with a general wide eyed staring for what seemed to be a solid minute, before a few men lurched towards the To'Ari to ask a few questions about this Captaincy. Most turned away again immediately, but two or three seemed to be negotiating a little more in earnest with the man.

"Good Idea. I will join you, because you probably need men and assistance."
Jo'Seph is reluctant to join a new expedition before the current one is completed, but because this appears to be a dead end/red herring, he doubts that it will harm things much if he is delayed reporting back. The magical healers here may worship the same dark Ghod as the people in his town, but they clearly worship a different aspect.

Tham, before the ziggurat
Tham looked up to Nergui with a firm nod, his staff shifting to rest behind his neck and over his shoulders, his arms coming up and over the staff as both a stretch and perch. A calm set in as he felt at ease hearing that the war was winnable.
"I can show you what I can do when ever you're ready." He offered with a cheery smile, swaying slightly as he spawn around a bit to look at the others near by.

VoitlejaThe rushing of the blood was still there, pounding in the back of Voitleja's flat topped head, but it had receded enough that it was no longer impeding his sonar. Tappa's gleeful presence, however, had not, and the Seene found himself compelled to move to stand behind Nergui. Somehow he knew that this was his place for now, and he stretched his boneless body upwards, reaching almost 11 feet in height. He held his Glaive in his two right hands, resting the handle on the stage, and slipped his shield onto his lower left arm. Although he may not have understood entirely why, his instincts were to strike an imposing figure, to project strength. Not to frighten or intimidate the crowd, as he might have the thieves back on the plantation, but to show that Zaqrah's Irregulars had strength in their ranks.
