The Chase - That same Night, The South of Bura, Month of PeaceTsehin and Nkasa nodded at what Pataya had to say, but he was running off before they could answer anything. They had not seemed like they had other ideas besides running themselves. The howling ran through the night again, and it continued to do so behind the pursued in periodic intervals.

After running for what had felt like an eternity, though it probably only had been half an hour judging by the position of the moons, Pataya arrived at where the road took a bend to the right and started to lead northwards. Atale was beside him, having been able to keep up with the large warrior easily - the construct was nimble as can be and did not feel fatigue after all. As they turned to the north they found a hill to their left side and a gentle slope leading downwards to the beach on their right. The oceanside there was facing inwards, not out to rougher winds, and a thicker jungle grew close to where they could see the edge of the beach.

Just barely Pataya could see the moons light playing on the water of the river that ran into the sea a few miles up ahead, though at this distance the manner of bridge proved to be more illusive. Nor could Atale make it out really, only the traces of the structure leading over the river.

As the two of them turned they found that the human and the getta were very far behind them, not having been able to keep up the pace of the construct and the four legged warrior. The two were maybe half a mile back the road, and a few minutes of calm wait had them finally catch up.

They were panting and sweating somewhat as they got their bearings just as Pataya and Atale had done a few minutes past. Yet they kept silent, seeming eager enough to go on.

There was another howling, maybe closer this time. And down the road one could see the wolves, four of them, so large as to appear much closer than they actually were. But they were on the road now, far away as they might actually be. One could not see any details about what was hunting them, but they all got the big picture well enough. They were hulking beasts of a white fur unseen in this part of the world, though it was not altogether unfamiliar to Pataya. Judging by their size they appeared more like a type of bear, or bison, but the howl had marked them as wolf. On their backs they each bore a figure, or maybe two, and whether they were passengers or riders was not entirely clear.

The wolves ran on, silent now that they had seen their prey just as it had seen them.

Pataya runs. Pataya looks at the wolves and their riders and then back at the small band he is with. "It is time for us to run as hard as we can for a while. If they start to catch us up we will need to turn and bite the as hard as we can. Do you know of any good places to try and hold them? " He sets off as he waits for their answer along the road that runs northwards to Bura, and relative safety. He accelerates to his full speed wanting to put as much distance between him and the howling animals as possible, and watches to see if the human and getta can keep up. They can, for he is growing tired and cannot maintain the pace he had previously.

Atale
The golem shakes her head. "That is fine for me. But the beasts will catch us eventually, and then the flesh members of our party will be tired from running. Let us set up an ambush here and get the battle over with. It looks like I have time to lay some traps."

She awaits the party's decision.

Pataya agrees an ambush is a good idea. Pataya looks at Atale. "They are more than we are. We will need to make sure the ambush reduces their numbers greatly. We should run on a short way until they cannot see us leave the road then move into the forest. I do not know this terrain. Where would be a good place? " He looks at the Human and Getta with an expression which suggests he thinks they might be better than him at finding an ambush site.

The Chase - That same Night, The South of Bura, Month of Peace"Curses those are big," muttered Nkasa as the ebony woman saw the wolves in the distance. As she turned her eyes where wide, her round mouth taut with shock.

"You're faster than any of us," barked Tsehin maybe a bit too forcefully at Atale, still winded from the run. "You run into the forest and cobble something together then. By the time we all are down there there won't be much time to set any sort of a trap."

"Not at the speed they are gaining on us," added Nkasa and wiped the sweat off her face. She jerked a hand towards Pataya. "So let's do that plan. Run, then face them in the forest where size might work against then. Then again you are just as tall as them."

She pointed a slender hand towards a bit of green to the northeast they may actually reach in time. "Ground looks soggy there as well - close to the jungle. Might give us more of an edge even."

The disfigured Getta spat out next to the human and nodded grimly. "Let's do this then, or Rofurt will feast on our souls."

After throwing another quick glance over his shoulder, and seeing that the wolves were a good bit closer, Tsehin set out on a jog, evidently confident that he the others would catch up with him soon. Nkasa followed suit not long after.

OOCThought it over, but Patayas plan still sounds like the most feasible. But Atale is indeed almost twice as fast as everybody else, so she could run ahead. She will need to go a bit around the swampy bits anyway, considering she is vulnerable to water. With her speed you can easily meet up behind that area and face them down somewhere there.

Pataya agrees an ambush is a good idea. Pataya sets off after the Getta and Human and calls to Atale "Run as fast as you can, We need an area they will find it hard to flank and where we can set traps. We will join you there. I believe I will have a surprise for them but they will have abilities we are not aware of." He settles down to a steady run that allows him to cover the ground as fast as he can.

Atale
Atale nods and, with one of her disconcerting giggles, speeds away north. She looks for a good chokepoint to begin laying snares fit for the giant beasts.

The Chase almost over - That same Night, The South of Bura, Month of PeaceThe chase continued onwards more frantic than before. By the time Pataya and his two slower Companions decided Atale had already disappeared into the forest to the right of them. They could still hear the growl of the wolves and their giant riders, but dashed downwards and into the green before they could see them over their shoulders, knowing full well that they weren't far behind.

Atale saw the others coming from a little away, breaking through trees and undergrowth, so Atale had ample time to guide them around the snares that she had set in the meantime.

As for spots that they could go to where they could not be flanked - that was a difficult proposition when running headlong into a jungle. Falling back a ways towards the ocean close to where the ground was swampy and mangrove trees stuck out of the muddy waters was as good as it was going to get - with a complete barrier to one side and a somewhat useful to the other. Maybe it was just as well to have at least two directions to turn two should things go sour, even more so than they already had that was.

"We'll dig in - you stay there," hissed Nkasa through almost closed teeth. "You're huge and white, they'll see you anyway. Us three, not so much."

The human dropped into a crouch and moved a few yards away into a low shrubbery, her two long daggers drawn. Soon only the white of her eyes were visible between the leaves.

Meanwhile, with surprising grace the Getta with the scarred face climbed upwards into the middle branches of a nearby tree, sticking arrows in the wood next to him to have them at the ready for his shortbow, onto which he placed another missile. He was less camouflaged maybe, but one had to look upwards first to spot Tsehin.

After everybody had taken a position nearby a short howl was audible not far away, less pronounced than the one from before that were clearly a battlecry.

OOCThey (however many break through the snares) will be with you very soon, depending on how well they are at tracking. So if you have any particular ideas of how you want to position yourself let me know now. As Nkasa pointed out - it'd be the hardest for Pataya to actually hide. It's not impossible though, he just has a size disadvantage in that area.

Also it would be a good time to look at the combat walkthrough right about now, in case you haven't already. It's less about the Gurps rules for combat, but more about my houserules on pbp combat. I only accept posts that have the things I list in that guide - or rather if you don't do it that way you may cheat yourself out of half the actions you could take in any given post.

Pataya makes himslef a target. Pataya realises that he cannot hide in the jungle so as the others hide he takes up a position in between them so that the enemy will see him and charge him and maybe forget the others in the heat of the moment. He loads a spear into his thrower, places the other two point first into the soil for quick loading and makes sure his axes are free to be grabbed when needed. Then he waits thrower in hand, and casts an explosive fireball that he allows to build as he waits for the first enemy to appear. He has never used magic in front of his companions so he knows it will be a bit of a surprise that he has a ball of fire above his left hand. "Try to stay hidden when they arrive and catch them by surprise as they rush me. I will give them a hot welcome" When the enemy appear, he fires the fireball at them, then follows that with a spear. As he reaches for a second spear to reload the Woomera, he is pleased to see both attacks strike home. The 'Wumph' of the exploding fireball and the spear plunging into a survivor bring a grin to his face. Pataya is in combat. Life is good!

Atale Attacks At Last
The flour golem nods approvingly at Pataya and looks for some understory shrubs to hide in, drawing her cloak about her and readying her net. If Pataya manages to engage the enemy, she will attempt to fling her net at the nearest rider and knock them to the ground. She will then spring from her hiding place and tumble to a position where she can strike for an enemy's vitals (picking a beast or a rider, whichever is in easiest range). She will then attempt to tumble out of range of a retaliatory attack after a slight retreat, in preparation for further combat.

EngagingAfter the first cries in the distance it did not take long before a rumbling drew near in the bushes and the trees. All those setting up the ambush were trying to focus in on where the jungle moved as hulking figures ran through it towards where they were.

Eventuall the first human broke through the underbush on the back of its towering white wolf, full gallop ahead at Pataya, not only because he was the largest - frankly only visbile - target, but also because he had his fireball floating above his hand illuminating him. Likely he thought it a torch, because he did not change course at it was loosened in his direction.

The fireball burst on the body of the human, sending him flying of his mount and engulfing him and the wolf in fire. The rider started to roll on the floor, their armour still burning, while the animal darted away with a grim whimper.

A lot of the surrounding jungle was caught in the blast as well, but the damp foliage was poor for burning. It created a lot of smoke, through which three more riders charged in a loose wedge formation. They also moved towards Pataya.

Atale let the first rider pass, then the second before sending her net flying at the last of the humans. The rider got tangled in the net and fell of the wolf, which came to a halt a few yards further, its claws digging into the soft earth. Atale charged the unsuspecting animal and buried her spear in its chest, which sent the wolf staggering sideways. It did not fall down though, but jerked his head around to roar at Atale.

One of the riders let a spear flying towards Pataya, missing him by a feet or so. Pataya retaliated with a spear of his own, yet the Human deflected it with a bone shield strapped to his other arm.

The other rider was in the process of attempting to throw a spear as well, as Nkasa jumped on the back of the wolf and started wrestling the human for the weapon.

Before the last of the mounted warriors to go unmolested reached Pataya in earnest Tsehin sent an arrow flying at the unsuspecting target. Just as the human bore down on Pataya with his long spear the projectile hit the white wolf. The creature jerked sideways in pain, and the lance of the human missed Pataya. The attacker left the long spear sticking in the earth next to pataya and drew a crude sword, the metal blackened by soot.

The FightIn the second after all this had happened the wolf that was facing down was about to crouch down and pounce towards Atale.

The Rider that was engaged with Pataya was preparing a strike with the broadsword he had drawn.

The other rider was wrestling with Nkasa, trying to throw her off while she was trying to make him drop his spear. Tsehin was starting to reload his bow.

OOCIt's a bit of a softball on my part, but the enemies were running into somewhat of an ambush. In any case, I also wanted to compartmentalise the combat a little to make it bearable.

So be mindful, the second fieldset is about what the enemy is planning to do after your first action, but before your second action. Make your plans accordingly.

Since Pataya is now at below a third of fatigue points he is tired, halving Movement, Dodge and Strength, which lowers damage.

Atale
Atale judges from her adversary's snarl that she has struck a grave blow. Calmly pressing her advantage, she stands her ground and focuses all her preternatural strength into her next thrust, which strikes home. She stands impassively in the face of the wolf's retaliatory attack. If she is still engaged in a melee with this wolf, she will then aim two quick strikes at the beast with her spear and remain within melee range.

Pataya joins the melee. Pataya steps back and pulls one of the spears out of the ground levelling it to face his foe using both hands. He parrys the blade with ease then when his foe is off balance he thrusts with the spear and is pleased that it moves straight at him. He observed the effect of his attack then withdraws the spear and parries the blade again ready to attack at the next opportunity.
