Pataya plans some morePataya realises he needs to get away from this ship so he takes a big breath and dives moving along the front line of ships towards the west. As he swims he tries to work out if the ships are moving or not, and when he rises up to the back of the ship along from the first he rises as carefully as possible and breaks surface quietly. He rests beside the rudder in the dark shadow cast by the stern of the ship and look at the rudder carefully. He also tries to identify if the ship has been fireproofed.

Out on the Water, Late Evening, Month of PeaceAfter coming up behind yet another ship the situation barely changed for Pataya. There were at least three or four other ships of the row behind that he was in more or less direct view of, and he could see that the on the stern of each there were now around a dozen people on each boat on the lookout for him, in addition to the outline of people hanging on the rigging or on top of the masts. As such he had again only a few seconds before he was spotted again. Instantly missiles started flying his way, with some about to hit him if he could not duck out of the way.

In these seconds he had a look at the rudder, which was well over ten inches thick and was set on at least three hinges above water that Pataya could see. The wood of the planks used in the ship had a faint shine to them, but whether that was due to surface moisture or a sort of varnish he did not know. As he was looking at the ship thus a frightful sound from within its bowels send the ship vibrating slightly in place. It was as if the ship itself was screaming the shriek cry of a giant beast, the bellow muffled because seemingly it came from the inside of the hold.

What Pataya perceived besides this was that another Fireball was travelling across the sky, already almost over the village, with the light of another hovering above one of the ships further down the row.

Meshkou, Late Evening, Month of PeaceAtale could see the south gate from afar long before she could actively reach it. In addition to having parts of it on fire the central square of the inner city was serving as sort of a hub for coordinating the different endeavours of crisis management.

Since it was less than fifteen minutes since the first explosion ravaged the town those that would extinguish the fires or try to defend the village were still in the majority, with maybe less than a hundred people actually willing to instantly pack up their things and leave willingly. In another fifteen minutes, let alone an hour, Atale was certain the ratio would be reversed, but for now all she could do was keep the elderly or very young from being trampled, something that she herself had to be wary of. She was successul enough in helping three dozen people and two or three wagons out the south gate.

The next ten minutes two more Fireballs hit the town, one falling somewhere near the southern docks across the river and bouncing once to come to a stop west of the castle, the second crashing into the upper city just short of the northern gate and the city wall , which by now had been manned with three dozen terrified soldiers. It most likely killed scores and sent the rest of the citizens into even more of a frenzy. No projectiles followed in the minutes after, the barrage seemingly stopped for the time being.

OOCI need two Dodge Checks for Pataya before you post next. The ships are not anchored, so they are moving a little, but as I said they do not have their sails up.

A note about burning ships: They are treated like an "entity" with Injury resistance (combustible), at least when captained. So if you manage to inflict enough fire damage they still get an HT roll against catching fire, whereas most other wooden structures do not.

Atale
Atale tries to find someone at the south gate who looked responsible. “Get everyone to the castle!”

She wonders if she can best help now by running to get reinforcements or rescue assistance. She decides to speed to the castle to see if there is any help there, then possibly south to Bura to bring warning.

Pataya actsPataya realises he has been spotted, and the arrow lancing into his left arm tells him the the archers are getting too close for comfort. He also realises that attacking now he has been spotted might be suicidal so he bugs out. He takes a deep breath and dives. He swims slowly to conserve his breath and heads for his cave to fetch his arms and armor. When he has to breath he rises to the surface, but makes a splash due to the pain in his arm. He takes a quick look back at the enemy fleet and dives again trying to get away from them in the darkness.

Out on the Water, Late Evening, Month of PeaceMissiles were hitting the water above Pataya as he dived down again to swim away in a southwestern direction. His lungs took him far enough so that he could safely dip above the water briely to throw a glance back at the armada. At this distance nothing but the luckiest of shots would be able to hit him.

He could just about see that there were dinghys lowered down from the decks of some of the ships of the attacking fleet before he went under again to enter his humble above via the underwater passageway he had found. Even with his infravision it was hard to see how many men they held, but most likely somewhere around ten each. This meant that if every ship lowered such a rowboat there would be close to a thousand men making their way towards the town soon. Pataya knew he would be considerably faster than them though in getting back.

His cave still held all the items he had left there, unsurprisingly, and putting on his equipment would only take him a few minutes.

Meshkou, Late Evening, Month of Peace"Elderly and children evacuate!" A gruff watchman standing near the south gate, who judging by his bulbous red nose had partaken in the festivities, yelled the order in Atales general direction. His speech was only mildly slurred. He did not seem to have actually noticed her personally, assuming someone else to be responsible for the shout, as he lurched away northwards continuing to bellow to everybody and no one in particular.

"Let the fires burn! Collect the stragglers outside! We'll shut the north gate soon!" Atale lost the man in the crowd as he pushed his way towards the north gate.

Another officer, this one in more presentable condition, called out in a sing song from the gate by the castle courtyard: "Get your weapons! Get your weapons! If you can fight, fight! Volunteers to contest the landing to the north gate!"

The majority of fighting men seemed to be up on the walls or in the castle courtyard, yet indeed there was a group of about fifty that had formed a circle around a Argali Soldier near the northern gate. They seemed to be in the final process of discussing their plan of action. Most of them had a look of grim determination, most likely masking the fear beneath.

OOCThere are plenty of people looking 'in charge' about if Atale wants to ask what the plan is, or offer her own ideas. Pataya will be in town again momentarily, well before any rowboats make contact.

Pataya actsPataya has made sure that the arrow wound has been packed with seaweed and wrapped before he puts his armour on. He goes back through the tunnel into the sea and swims slowly back towards the town. He swims carefully and quietly so as not to make a wake and aims for a point where the water is too deep for the beings in the boats. He watches the boats to find one where the heat given off by the beings in it is low knowing that means they will be wearing heavy armour. He floats towards them ready to attack and sink at east one boat before he heads for the shore. His anger at this enemy who rains fire on innocents is rising and he intends to make them pay.If he is spotted he will dive and make for the shore, but for now he closes with the boats,

"Atale”

Atale looks at the officers in bewilderment. She mutters, “They are all determined to die stupidly for a lost cause.”

At least she can help the innocent. Atale continues to help the young and weak, and to search for anyone trapped by the fires.

Out on the Water, Late Evening, Month of PeaceAs Pataya entered the open ocean again he could see that the rowboats had already covered a good eighty feet towards the town. As he still was much quicker than a boat could be rowed he would be able to reach them at a bit after the halfway point of their journey. He could see that the fires in outer Meshkou were for the most part still burning. No people were visible on the pier anymore, even to his sharp eyes.

Getting closer to the rowboats he could see that each of them had three rowers on each side, plus four or five men standing on deck holding various weapons in their hands. The dinghys themselves were each barely over three yards long, so they were cramped full of people. The warmth that Pataya could see on the figures was uniformly coming from their faces, heads or hands. They were all clothed in multiple layers apparently, something he supposed would be unbearable during the day in this climate.

From the distance he could not see the exact makeup of their armour or their figures. If he had to guess he would have said they could not have been of the goat- or birdlike people that he had encountered in these lands, nor of the horned cyclopses, since the shapes of beaks and horns would be too distinct even in the twilight. Come to think of it, the only people that fit the approximate shape of what he saw were Skinks and Humans.

As he had swum through the waters often Pataya knew that the ocean was not very deep in these parts. These were coastal waters, so shallow that even some of the northern races people with their small lungs could dive to the bottom and fish up a pearl or two. It did not mean that people could not drown here though.

Meshkou, Late Evening, Month of PeaceWith all the efforts of putting out the fires concentrated on the inner city they are soon stopped there. Atale could lend a helping hand to carry a bucket of water along or pull somebody out from smouldering debris as best she could. At a certain point the inner city was finally safe to be in, while the flames were still consuming buildings beyond the gates. Yet it still felt crowded with all those that were not already fleeing lumbering about there.

With no more immediate work to occupy it the crowd grew restless quickly. The slightly drunk seeming Uxian Watchman had made his way to the entrance of the castle and started to shout at the civilians. "Get armed or get lost, you hear me! They can't break the walls down, but we can't feed the lot of you through a siege if you don't fight! Run now and you can be in Bura in a few days!"

The vanguard of defenders that gathered at the north gate - still left open - had swollen to a group that Atale estimated to be around eighty. Most of them were equipped with close quarter weapons like shortswords and convenient ranged weapons like crossbows. The Soldier in charge even had those that owned them take off heavier armour for increased moveability.

He was shouting some last minute orders now: "Swarm out into the buildings along the pier! If we each take two of them they will be two hundred men shorter! They don't know the village, once things get too crowded we fall back and scale the wall!"

Indeed Atale could see that some heavy hempen ropes had been tied to the battlements and coiled up to be thrown down for those brave or stupid men. Atale knew that the ropes would not hold many men at once, so getting eighty people over the wall would take too long in any combat situation. Yet if an enemy got a hold of it the guards up top could chop the rope through at once, so at least that was no danger. At least some of them might return.

"Start closing the North Gate!," somebody shouted, and gears were turned to set it into motion. It descended only slowly, and would only be fully closed in a few minutes.

OOCIf Pataya is to engage one of the rowboats I will need to know the exact distance he plans on coming to the surface away from them, and where in the row of boats he will pop up. Otherwise we

This is a visualisation of the columns of rowboats heading for the town, just so you get a sense of the scale and positions:

Each square is three feet here. A boat holds as I said around ten people or more.

Atale is not directly addressed by any of the soldiers because she is still pretty inconspicuous in the turmoil, by the way. If the

Aggravated Atale
Atale smacks her forehead with her palm. She considers for a moment then runs up to the boss soldier, trying to keep her face and body shadowed in her cloak.

“Captain, my grandpa said if the ships hit the docks with another giant fireball our whole army will be lost in one second! He said we should set the docks ablaze ourselves to make the landing harder and shoot from the walls. He told me not to run away from the evacuation but I just had to warn you. My grandpa is so smart!”. She trembles dramatically.

Pataya actsPataya decides to try and attack the line of boats nearest to him as he swims back from the cave. Dumping the enemy into the sea in heavy armor will mean that they may drown. He moves closer, and at around 40 ft from them he dives. He comes under the last boat in the line and takes hold of the keel. He drives his spear hard into the bottom of the boat and then withdraws it to let the water flood in. As the boat starts to settle, he stays under it to see what happens. to force. He watches in the hope of seeing figures hitring the water hoping to see them all plunge to the bottom of the sea. May your Gods take your souls, for Cupil's children shall feed well on your bodies. he thinks as he watches.

Out on the Water, Late Evening, Month of PeacePatayas spear dug into the wood of the underside of the boat, but it proved to be resilient. While the tip may have penetrated the planks just barely, what little water must be leaking into the dinghy would take ages to actually sink it. A few more hits might could possibly do it.

Still, the strike rocked the boat hard. A second after the fact something hit the water to the side of it - a figure starting to paddle wildly. The Rowboat itself seemed to slow down as it prepared to come around again. Off in the distance the last boat of the next column over also veered off it's intended path to intercept the frantically paddling figure.

Meshkou, Late Evening, Month of PeaceThe old red nosed Uxian Watchman seemed to be dishing out most of the orders by right of seniority. As he was approached by Atale he paid little attention at first and continued to shout at random runners as he dispatched them with messenges to the walls and the castle.

"What're you on about kid," was what he asked when he finally turned towards Atale. "You see our whole army marching to port?"

He frowned for a second, obviously considering who it was he was talking to. After shaking his head lightly the Soldier looked down at the small figure beside him again. He was evidently not convinced by the arguments of Atales fictitious grandfather as he continued: "Besides if more fire starts flying sooner or later we will all be dead no matter where we are. There's only running from that, but it's stopped now and that's all I care about."

"Look around - there's over a hundred soldiers in here with us and much more than that on the walls." Lazily he waved his hand towards the inner gate leading to the castle courtyard and the stone staircases leading up to the meager walls of the inner city.

"You ever been up there though? They are too low for us to even see the port, at least here around the city."

That much was probably true. The wall surrounding the castle - only a small part of which faced the port - may have been a bit over twenty five feet tall, but the smaller ring around the inner city could not have been more than fifteen, probably less. As such the wall stood not much taller than the buildings in front of it, all of which were now on fire. With the fire only raging for less than an hour a lot of the buildings still stood, with the ones that had broken down already sending a solid wall of smoke rising upwards into the night.

"Those running round the castle are taller, but we can't see a thing through the smoke! If we set the port ablaze right now we could see even less! I reckon the volunteers will still light it up as they fall back. Right now those on the walls will take pot-shots at nothing and make sure nobody gets the drop on us from the south."

OOCA boat (or any other vehicle for that matter) generally only "breaks" at zero HP, and becomes much less usable at a third of the maximum. "One Hitting" a small boat would only be possible if in the future you have the time to prepare a fire spell.

Pataya actsPataya is pleased he has got one enemy in the water but wants to make it more. Using his left arm to brace himself against the keel, he puts the index finger of his right hand into the hole made by his spear and pulls as hard as he can hoping to pop one of the planks and make the boat sink quicker. He feels the wood start to give and keeps on pulling.

Out on the Water, Late Evening, Month of PeaceMuch as he wished to do so Pataya found that he could not break multiple layers of planks with one finger. He broke a few spinters out of the underside as he hung on to the now decelerating rowboat, only widening the hole where his spear had entered, but not the tiny pinhole where water was running into the boat. In fact, for the time being he plugged the hole with his finger.

The upside of the whole operation was that he remained directly underneath the boat while it slowly turned to make for the drowning warrior. Apparently the other boat that had detached itself from the next column was also too fixated on the man that had gone overboard, considering there was no immediate attack on Pataya even though he was sure his white bulky body must be fairly conspicuous this close to the surface.

Pataya could see the drowing man now. Actually it wasn't a man at all, at least as far as Pataya could tell, but a wild eyed human woman that was struggling under the water. Her skin was pale as snow, especially looked at through the water, her long hair black as coal. On her wrinkled face there had been some painted on pigment which was slowly being washed away by the ocean. She was wearing an armour of hardened leather pieces over thick patches of fur and cloth, both of which was dragging her downwards.

Many adorning pieces of bone were attached to the armour itself, and Pataya could see various trinkets made of ivory hanging around the womans neck with leather straps, now floating upwards and away from her. Her weapon had been lost in the fall, and she seemed not to be aware of Pataya as she was in the last moments of fighting for her life.

Meshkou, Late Evening, Month of PeaceA young Skink dressed in the apron of a blacksmith ran up to the old guard before Atale had made her exit. "Watchman Khani! There is words from the docks that there's at least a hundred ships beyond in the darkness. Don't know who they are from, but they already sent out boats to take the town by force."

The old Ux spat out onto the floor before giving his response. "We start shooting immediately. Looks like we won't run out of arrows before this is done. Tell the civilians."

The To'Ari hurried away towards the townspeople, the same direction Atale was going in. While she helped people gather belongings the smiths apprentice waved his hands and shouted towards the crowd at large. "Hear me people, Hear me! Grab only what you can carry. Food and Water! Soon the invaders will hit the port! You have ten minutes or less before we start lowering the south gate!"
