The Road to Bura - Deep in the Jungle, Early Morning, Month of PeaceAtop the Steed Nkasa nodded solemnly as she studied the farmers on the distant terraces.

"Feels like somebody was through here not to long ago. Least that is what I gathered from the dead rat." The woman scratched her scalp through her thick curly hair as she briefly considered the safety of the labourers. "Could be they already know. If they are anything like back home they might care more about the harvest than news of war. Farmers are a stubborn people everywhere."

Behind the human Eshkis leaned to the side and spat out some phlegm into the grass below. She looked weary and there was more than a little annoyance in her tone as she cut in: "Were you not to escort me to Bura so you'd have a credible voice to tell the news? If you go running off now you could have left me behind altogether."

The To'Ari barely looked at Atale, but finally turned towards the fields and sucked on her teeth thoughtfully. "They might have some fresh food though, maybe ricewine or spirits."

Nkasa had turned forward again. She was frowning as she exchanged a glance with Atale and finally Pataya. After sighing the human said to nobody in particular, a tone of mock reproof in her voice: "Well, if we hurry up we can warn the fieldworkers and maybe beg for some produce. Then I suggest we move on quickly but together."

Atale
Atale says calmly, "I know the plan. But the enemy is likely not waiting for it." She shrugs and follows Nkasa's lead toward the nearest of the farmers.

Pataya agrees with NyasaPataya looks down at the farmers toiling innocently, then turns to Nyasa and Atale" You are correct, Nyasa. We must remain together so that we can combine our resources to convince the Burans of what they face. We should pass through and make our way onwards. I will not ask them for aid if I am not to fight to defend them. " The last sentence is said with a finality which suggests that his strange Code of Honour is in play.

OOCLast post was mislabeled as you might have noticed, it was already evening, not early morning.

Approaching Bura, Morning, Month of PeaceNkasa nodded, not very bothered about the farmers either way. She was certainly not going to lead anybody anywhere, so as Pataya said with some resolution that they should continue she got her steed moving again with a squeeze of her thighs. Eshkis sighed, obviously sad about passing on the opportunity to try and nip something from the peasants, yet she said nothing further.

Pushing on a few more hours the group almost crossed the entire valley. They set up camp in view of where they would pass into the next bit of tropical forest as it was illuminated by the stars of this cloudless night. To the delight of everybody it seemed like this was not a jungle proper but a looser if still very lush piece of woodlands.

This night passed without incident, and even though they woke early everybody felt a lot more refreshed than the morning before. Energised by this the group made even better time the following day. It felt as if they would be able to push on to Bura the same day, though that feeling proved to be misleading. By nightfall Eshkis started to grumble and whine on the back of the horse, assuring the Group that it was still a good six hours to the city, so the Group had to set up another camp at the next clearing they could find.

The day after that it turned out that Eshkis had been right. It took another two hours to leave the forest, another three before the town came into view. At night this number surely would have been even higher.

Yet there Bura was, within reach. They could see the road that led up the steep slope to where the town lay on the cliffside that beyond supposedly fell sharply down to where the waves were crashing against stone a hundred-fifty feet below. Even a mile away one could see a castle looming at the side of the small settlement, its walls maybe a little higher than what had been built in Meshkou, but still not impressively massive.

The group approached Bura from the North, and they could just barely see how the river here seemed to cut the hill in two.

"Doesn't happen anywhere else on the world," explained Eshkis. A smile played around her lips. Evidently she was very pleased with having reached civilisation again. "They say a giant cut the cliff in two when he sharpened his sword, that's why the river flows down below through the fissure. They have a bridge between the north and the south part of the town."

OOCTwo Nights of sleep, so Pataya heals 4 Hp. I think it should be three days more sleep before the hand is healed? Something like that at least.

Map here, actually forgot to update it in the other thread before:

Pataya arrives in BuraPataya looks up at the town above them. The walls are strong but the force in the north is much too strong. "We must warn them. Bura is strong but from what I saw in the attack, it will not hold the invaders. The message must get through to larger towns if the invaders are to be stopped. Lead on, Eshkis, to make sure that they are warned."

"OOC"Pataya now has 12 of 19 HP so needs four more days to be fully fit.

Approaching Bura, Morning, Month of Peace"It's still me in the saddle," said Nkasa up on the Laughing-Hog. "I didn't ride this far to let her run off to reap the glory now. We go together. Hya!"

Eshkis face was not visible, but before the To'Ari could have reacted the Hog was trotting away towards the first expanses of the village. People were going about their daily business it seemed, but there was a sort of frantic energy about them. When they saw Pataya approach a lot turned from their labours to gawk at him and point. Not long after the group had hit the first building they came across a group of guards.

"Rofurt above! Keep this creature back," shouted a female Gettan Watchman with beady black eyes at Nkasa, waving her upper two hands defensively. The other pair was neatly tucked away behind a battered bronze chestplate.

The Hog reared as the Human Woman brought it to a halt. "There's war you fool, get out of the way! And this here is a man, Hedgehog!"

The guard all but snarled at the insult, her dark grey snout wrinkling with untempered rage. Yet some of her colleagues smirked slighty - seemingly unsure about how this was going to play out.

Spittle was sent flying as the Guard bellowed back: "Yeah, we already heard - Human. There's been a rider last eve, so what care I about your stale news!"

Nkasa shook her head, already tired of this confrontation. Most of the anger had gone out of her voice to be replaced by a strained patience, the kind teachers had with especially naughty children. "Meshkou has fallen, that is news is it not? We have more, but we need to speak to your betters immediately."

"So soon..." The Guardsman was taken aback. It wasn't hard to guess what her colleagues whispered to her then. The Getta raised her hand eventually, silencing his subordinates. Another shake of her hand motioned the group to follow her.

After a few steps the Getta stopped again to briefly turn around: "But this thing keeps its hand to itself!"

With that the guard and his retinue led the way into Bura.

In Bura, morning, Month of PeaceThe group was led through the gate of the town wall and past the main square, where traders still offered their wares as if there was not war on at all. They seemed more interested in Pataya, and to a lesser extent Atale, than the news that surely must have spread since last night.

On the other side of the square there was a large temple made of pillars and colourful bands of tiles, dedicated to gods that Pataya was not familiar with. Atale, hailing from Vinja, could discern by the statues up above the pillars that this was a temple dedicated to multiple Uxian Gods. The largest depicted was Tjex depicted as ruler of earth and stone, followed by Zahme, God of the Oceans. They were flanked by lesser gods, but Atale could only identify Lahram, the Keeper of earthly riches. One could assume that the people of this town were traders through and through.

They headed into the temple proper, a stairway in the antechamber lead up into a gallery overlooking the main hall of the temple. A diamond shaped hardwood table was set in the middle of the room with seven people sitting around it, all of which turned to look at the group of people being led in by the guardsman. Two Uxians were dressed in the manner of their priests in robes and golden oval headgear, while the rest of the people present were dressed in military or civilian garb.

A Rak'Ari with toxic green scales jumped up from his seat around the table. "What's the meaning of this Guardsman... Guardsman..."

"Mung Sir," offered the Getta next to the Reptileman.

"Guardsman Mung!" The Rak'Ari was able to finish his thought. He was wearing fine quality clothing of linen and silks, which in combination with his authoritative tone marked him as an authority in the town, yet his lack of armour would suggest a civilian.

"Tradesmaster Attezel," started the Guardswoman Mung. The little break had given her enough time to rally, and her voice was steady. She had had enough time to think about what to say on the way over here. "I found these strange folk outside the wall. Would have turned them away Master, yet they claim to have news that Meshkou is fallen... and more. Don't know if I believe them, but I don't dare to judge in stead of the council."

One of the Uxian priests, the decidedly older and wrinklier cut in after silencing the guard with a wave of a flabby hand heavy with gold rings: "Yes yes, very wise and fine of you young Woman."

The priest motioned with his raised hand towards the Group. "Well go on then, give us your news. Then we can talk further."

AtaleThe small golem steps forward and curtseys gracefully. "It is true, Your Honor. A human army came from the sea, on ships that launched massive balls of flame. The town had no defense against it. The survivors are making their way south and will need aid to make it here. But Bura is not safe. Poor Eshkis here lost her father in the attack."

Pataya faces the EldersPataya has been holding his anger at the way they have been treated by the soldiers of Bura in check but being inside and the condiscention of the councillors raise his ire. He stands up to his full height and says solemnly "I am Pataya Ilaq-Puki, Emissary and Warrior of the Yatak from the Eternal Ice. I bear injuries gained in the defence of the town of Meshkou and I have made my way hear to carry warning of the danger that is upon you. Ships which can launch magical fireballs, at least a thousand well armed and trained warriors and worms which tore through the walls of Meshkou in less than an hour are coming in your direction. Ignore us if you will, but at least let us tell your people that it is time to fight or flee." He glares at the councillors with eyes that have seen combat and know what is coming. "The humans of the north want your lands and wealth. They will be here soon. And your town needs to be ready for them. "

In Bura, morning, Month of PeaceThe councilmen in attendance drew in a breath in unison after hearing the additional news.

"Humans," asked the younger of the two Uxian Priests, puzzled by the fact. "What, an army solely made up of Humans? That's... That's"

While the Priest was mulling this over Trademaster Attezel leaned sideways and whispered something to his Gettan aide who rushed out of the room immediately. The Raz'Ar lifted a clawed hand and spoke loudly: "First things first. A rescue party will send out within the our to meet the refugees. Dimi has already been notified. Most likely a reply from the Free City is already on its way here."

Another Ux cut in, this one wearing a golden chainmail over bright cloth: "What do you mean Magic Fire? There are reports of flung fire, but how do you know it is magic? And what is this about worms? You even claim to know what this army wants, and I have never seen the likes of you or heard of Yatak. How do you know all this, if the town fell within the hour?"

Attezel had frowned slightly at the interruption, then drummed on the tabletop with his fingers as the questions were asked. Now he cleared his throat to take the conversation over again: "General Hedjmi, you heard this ... warrior tell you that he had defended the town..."

Turning towards Pataya the Trademaster added: "I suppose you saw, did you not? You will forgive our confusion at hearing about all of these things. A Human army..."

"You may not be aware, but it is nigh impossible to ship an army from human lands to here without going past Bazzro and Lutheya or taking it around through Poyne waters. These are supposed to be friends, so it is troubling to ponder their involvement. Yet neither would have anything to gain by assembling only Humans into an army, should they desire our lands. It is strange indeed."

The older of the two priests knocked on the floor with a walking stick he had left leaning against his chair to gain the attention. "It seems to us that the original matter of our meeting here has solved itself: The civilian population needs to be evacuated. It may be that the storm will pass us by, but one can't be too careful. To me it appears that anybody that was out for wealth would be better off trying to sack the coffers of a great free City than our little towns. And those looking for land to own would not scorch the earth they tried to possess. War solely for destruction is wickedness."

"Be that as it may High PriestMobad Quairak...," interrupted General Hedjmi again. "...it might be a feint."

Quairak nodded solemly before turning his attention towards Pataya and Atale. "Are both of you wounded? We shall have somebody attend to you downstairs."

"After they have answered my questions," said the General. "How are we to mount a defense knowing so little? I won't take drastic measures only to find out a fortnight later that it was all hysteria and ghosts in the night. What would you have me do?"

Pataya faces the EldersPataya drops down onto all four legs. " I got my injuries trying to attack the boats as they went ashore. All the soldiers I saw were human. There were over 20 hands of ships, 2 hands of which had crystal bows and were able to throw fireballs. I believe this was magic though it may be a machine whose like I have never seen. I then made me way to join the survivors. A soldier from Meshkou, who is with the caravan of survivors, survived the attack on the town and reported it had fallen shortly after I left the town and that there had been worms which undermined the walls. You may not know of the Yatak, but I came in peace and fought to defend your lands. I am no invader but I do wonder if I have chosen the right side to fight for."
Then he smiles. "But be assured, I have chosen and my weapons and skills are at your disposal"

Atale says, "I am unhurt. I have no new information but I am sure some of the refugees have seen things that I did not. Except that you will want to look for a To'ari name Anadar. He assumed leadership of the refugee train, simply by virtue of his cool head and clear sight, although he is just a blacksmith's apprentice."

In Bura, morning, Month of Peace"Twenty hands?" The Uxian General lifted an arm to look at his hand, calloused for one of his kind. His eyes widened in surprise as he put the information together. "What, a hundred? Gods!"

"Who was your father, child?" One of the two people in the room that had remained inconspicious until now spoke up to adress Eshkis, an old and whethered Tsing Goun. The feathered skin around her neck hung loosely over the metal chains she wore around her neck. She was dressed practically in linen clothing the colour of Earth and Dirt.

"I don't know how that's relevant right now!" The general looked furious, but a raised hand and a toothy smile by Tradesmaster Attezel had him snort and settle back into his chair, letting Eshkis answer. "My father was Djahute Napa, based in Meshkou."

The Tsing Goun nodded solemnly and clicked her tongue. "I knew him. Good intuition. Ain't that right Monder?"

A chestnut furred Ilder with a nasty scar across his forehead next to the Vulturewoman nodded quietly, his hands dug into the pockets of his seamans smock.

At that moment the younger of the two Uxian Priests turned towards Atale and leaned forward on his chair. "What, you mean you weren't hurt. But I thought... the voice."

He pointed a flabby hand towards his own voicebox. "And you so wrapped up. Fire surely?"

His elder colleague next to him put a hand on the others shoulder to pat it. "Later, A Priest who is also an ArbiterHirbad Areeh. Later. I'm sure these people need rest. And this council has much to discuss."

The Trademaster cleared his throat and clapped his clawed hands together at that cue. "Yes, indeed. We are most thankful for your sacrifice and message. Any impropriety is most certainly down to the shock, yes? I believe this warrior has offered their services as well, if it would please you General. You others, rest assured you will receive food and lodging for the night either way, and if you desire to leave this place as most of its population surely will soon you shall have a place on a ship."

Nkasa, having been absolutely silent this whole time bowed once. "I am a fighting woman. My daggers are for hire."

General Hedjmi, to whom such offers would be most approprietly addressed, seemed distant-minded already and dropped his rotund chin into one his hands in thought.

"Get cleaned up and talk to the guards later on," he mumbled. "They will take your help. Companies will be swarming north like vultures. A free cities army takes only citizens."

From the context even those not martially inclined could gather that the man meant mercenary companies. The Tsing Goun trader croaked a light chuckle at the mention of vultures.

Attendants and low Priests from the Temple below stepped out of the various alcoves set into the sides of the room where they had inconspiciously waited for their cue, ready to lead the Group of Messengers downstairs to receive aid.

OOCPataya will receive some patching up if he wants it, but no magical healing. You will be accomodated in one of the inns if you want to and receive food, drink and water for washing when you ask for it.

Atale
She says gravely to the baffled Uxian priest, "I am not in need of rest, but I will accept private quarters to stow my belongings. If you wish to have your questions answered, you may send for me when you are ready." She follows the attendants and the rest of her party.

Pataya leaves the EldersPataya bows to the Elders respectfully and leaves with Atale. As they move to their quarters he says " I think we should stay and help them fight but be ready to escape into the wilderness if the attack is overwhelming. I do not believe Bura will hold if they come in strength" Then he smiles. "Stick by me, Atale, and I will try to keep you safe" When they reach the inn, he stays outside and lays himself down. He eats and drinks happily then settles down to sleep.

OOC: He will accept any patching up that is available as he wants to be fully fit as soon as possible.
