"Thank you, sir!". She helps get the wounded flesh-people to the doctor then searches for someone who can help her patch herself up.

Starting to heal and the conclusion of the battleWhen the greatly reduced squad made their way to the tents of the surgeons and medici there was some confusion as to who they were and how they were wounded. Almost the entirety of the defending force had left the city to aid the attack on the besieging humans, and those manning the walls had to have no fear of being hit by projectiles for the first time since the beginning of the war. That they were a specialist unit that had killed the tunneling beast beneath the rock was taken as fantasies developed in a delirium induced by blood-loss and fever, but all those that had flesh and blood were regardless still treated.

They were all put into an empty tent, laid down on mattresses of dirty straw on the ground. An overworked healer cleaned and bound wounds and dished out water and mild tonics. Bucket immiately fell into a deep slumber, with Nkasa resting next to him and dabbing the sweat off his brow. One might have called it an act of sympathy between one human to another, though after what they had endured it was probably more than that. Mali refused to lie down completely, but sat crosslegged on the floor against a tentpole breathing deeply and heavily.

Wahka remained in the tent also, even though the albino frogwoman was more or less entirely unhurt. The nervous Ux Sheedi was lying on his back, shaking lightly because of post-battle shock, unable to sleep truly.

Atale was meanwhile searching the city for a baker or cook and the ingredients that made up her body. Though this had been a city in siege, so there was little to no flour to go around, let alone bread that had not gone to mould or turned hard as rock. Similarly those professionals that may have been best at helping her out were on the walls watching the battle unfold. Nobody but the dedicated healers seemed to have any time for the wounded with everybody either hunkered down in fear the battle would be lost in their own homes or watching it unfold on the walls.

Thought the quest to rebuild herself naturally led the golem onto the barricades herself, and she saw some of the fight unfold in the distance. Down the slope of the hill the town was built on a great mass of fighters were engaged in a loosely oval with only a few units of auxiliaries holding back on the far side of the battle.

It will be lost, some gawkers shouted, unable to determine who was sustaining the most losses.

They are breaking, others said when humans disengaged and fled out of the pincer that was formed by the armies of Bura and Dimi. If they really were humans.

The battle had been fought for more than an hour already when Atale first saw it. Eventually the dense mass of fighting men broke apart more and more as individual units wanted to move this way and that, spreading out over the field below. Those running were pursued most of the time, until it appeared that there wasn't anybody left anywhere that would stand and fight. As human and native alike had expended all their energies the chase peterd out and what was left of the roused army swarmed away to the west and north. Scores of dead from both sides littered the ground where the battle had raged. It was hard to tell at this distance, but the defending force seemed to have been reduced greatly, even though it had been victorious.

Out on the other side of the wall one could witness the outcome of another victory that had been won at a great price. Burning husks of ships were floating on the bay of Bura spouting black smoke towards the heavens. The waves were full of floating debris, most of which had men clinging to them. Sailors and warriors of either side had made their way to the docks below the city, and humans and Bura defenders were lying about there recuperating - not one even thinking of continuing their fight on land.

Most of the ships were those that Dimi had sent, though it soon became clear that some of the major ships of the human army had also been sunk, while others had slipped away north. They would most likely rally at Meshkou.

The turtle-like armoured ship that had been provided by one of the Princes of Taytomac was anchored at the port as well, blackened beyond recognition and having lost all of its masts and sails. Thought it appeared it had done its part - drawing fire from the human ships without being sunk.

For the first time in half a month the town of Bura could open its gates again. The defending force still had much work to do with stripping and burying the dead, caring for the wounded of either side and the prisoners made, but it was clear that in a few hours there would be time for celebration.

While it was clear that the war would continue for some days yet, with parts of the human army having fled north and their navy not completely destroyed but greatly dimished, it seemed like the pivotal battle had been won. To drive them out of their last foothold onto Managh Island and Vinione, the burned out Meshkou, would not be a great feat.

More importantly maybe, it was not something that Jo'Seph and the rest of the flesh-and-blood squad needed to concern themselves with. They would have a lot of healing to do, and as soon as anybody from the Zaqrah Mercenary company found them they would be celebrated as heroes while they did it.

OOCHappy new year everybody - you've all made it!

Don't worry about the whole healing issue so much. There is no magic healing available immediately, and natural recovery will take about two weeks, but we will eventually just skip forward to when you are all at full strength again. You will not be a part of the last battle, which is more mopping up anyway.

We will play through the aftermath, but it is very likely that the Zaqrah Mercenary company will be disbanded very soon. You will all receive wages and have some time to seek out equipment.

Then there will be a new adventure to seek out. Usually I would have given you multiple avenues to chose from at the same time, but since we are looking to combine you two with other players very soon I will present you with one option first that will hopefully be agreeable to you, leading you back to Taytomac (or there for the first time, in the case of Atale). Of course you can refuse, that'd just mean I have to come up with another hook to get you over there and involved with the next metaplot.

"We need to find some way to fill the tunnels beneath the city and restores its foundations."
Jo'Seph heads to the medical tent to have his wounds bound, and then watches the battle from a distance, too badly wounded to offer any assistance. The remaining battles are purely removing a few stragglers-not something that he will be needed for. Perhaps he will be able to find a fine sword in all the collected weapons from both sides after the battle ends.
Over the next few days, he tries to sort out how the tunnels can be safely filled.

With the invaders repulsed for now and the bakers occupied, Atale sticks to relatively safe pursuits. Before Jo and his team fill the hole completely, she tries to sneak back to where the giant blue serpent corpses lie and cut away enough hide to make some apparel. A jerkin is her top priority but if the hide is good quality she will cut away enough for a cap and some leg greaves and gloves as well. She will discuss her plans with a leatherworker.

Otherwise she will stave off boredom at night by hunting rats and stray cats and dogs in the alleys of the town, keeping any nice quality skins.

Bura, Managh Island, VinioneIt would take a lot of labour to completely fill in the tunnels created by the humans, and especially considering one could always walk in from the two openings on either side of Bura hill the caves would remain open for quite a while. When Atale inspected the slain monsters she found that what gave them their hardness was not skin at all, but chitinous plates over a soft inside. What lay beneath the exoskeleton was slimy and stinking, something most likely related to the incredible heat generation of this beast. Regardless, if she set her mind to it she could cut some of this skin, though beyond a blueish hue it would be comparable to most other hide. The chitinous plates may be turned into scalemail by an experienced armourer, yet that was beyond leatherworking.

Beyond that there would be much resting to be done. The war was over for this squad, and their mercenary general seemed to understand that. When Zaqrahs irregulars marched through the town with the rest of the Dimi troops after the humans had been sent running north the eccentric Ux dispatched his quartermaster to drop of their wages.

Atale had not been in his employ for very long, and indeed she found that who had employed her in Bura, the merchant called Chipa, had died in the siege not too long ago. But Zaqrah had added a large bonus of coins to both pouches, making up for it easily. The flamboyant mercenary called Keshtar that Nkasa had been travelling with when Atale met her had lived though. Likewise Tsehin arrived not soon after, having recuperated enough in Dimi to join his companions.

Yet the festivities lasted only an evening. An evening of revelry certainly, but the next morning all able bodied soliders were loaded onto galley or simply marched north to drive the dagger in.

Meanwhile those that had played a pivotal part in the battle on land and on sea were honored in the Bura townhall and temple with a simple wartime ceremony attended by some of the town dignitaries, some of which Atale had seen before when she had first entered the city. What was left of the squad was hung with laurels and praised, next to the others that had played a part, like the Taytomac prince that had supplied a ship clad in metal to withstand the fireballs of the human galleons. This Tay To Way looked worse for wear himself, even in freshly pressed finery, having apparently been on the ship himself when it drew the fire.

Even if the thanks were genuine the speeches were full of platitudes, and the whole ceremony seemed to be over in a flash. All those traders and priests had an economy to rebuild, believers to feed and so on and so forth.

They soon found themselves outside on the marble steps of the temple, which had sustained only a few bruises and black burn marks, standing next to a Gettan royal and his gruff female bodyguard.

"I have heard that you are my countryman," Prince Tay To Way said to Jo'Seph. He put on a smile that some might have described as dashing, though it certainly took some energy. "Don't worry about the bowing and the title."

OOCJo'Seph receives 900 gold pieces and Atale 700.

Just to clarify: Atale can harvest as much skin as she wants. Just wanted to clarify that an insects skin is not inherently harder than a mammals, so while it might produce an exotic armour it will have the base DR of comparable leather. It does depend what type you are going for anyway - heavy, light, layered etc. See low-tech instant and low-tech instant armor for reference.

Also a meta-question: Likely the action will move away from the island very soon. Are there any npcs that you would want to bring along (for ooc or character reasons). Not all of them might want to come depending on what the next "thing" will be anyway, but I'm just interested.

People that survived from the old squad (and the one Atale was briefly a "part" of): Mali (Rakari Female Warrior), Bucket (Human male Warrior), Sheedi (Ux Crossbowman), Nkasa (Human mercenary), Wahka (Bullywug Female scout), Keshtar (Ux mercenary), Tse-hin (Gettan Male Mercenary). I can refresh your memory on some of them some more, but the bottomline is I'll only bring npcs along if you have any interest in them.

EDIT: Oh and by the way - you might have money now, but the Island is not particularly flush in goods right now. Just a reminder.

Atale's beady purple eyes appear to shine as she uncovers the strange blue integument of the beast. Having no sense of smell, she does not notice its full offensiveness, although she shakes some of the slime onto the floor. "Ooh, pretty blue!" The texture is unpleasant, however, so she satisfies herself with enough skin to make a wide belt, as a war trophy. However, she lets the city armorers know that a nice source of scale mail is available if they want to harvest the chiton, and asks if one of them could fashion her a breastplate of the material.

The little golem has not had much time to bond with many of the rest of the war band. But she spends some time hanging about her old companions Nkasa and Tse-hin, following them if they go tavern crawling, and trying to gauge whether they might want to adventure together some more. "We would have beaten those wolf-riders if the mage didn't suddenly show up! Poor Pataya! I may never see his like again."

"It seems almost a lifetime ago...so much has happened so quickly..."

Jo'Seph has little to say, but will take the time to listen to Prince Tay To Way. He might learn more about the humans and their plans...

Over the next few days, as the fighting here winds down, Jo'Seph will try to obtain what weapons he cana, as well as taking some time to rest and practice. He may not be able to obtain a properly balanced sword, but he might get something similar. A spear or knife would probably be enough; he has heard of some people using a wooden staff with a sword technique,..

Bura, Managh Island, Vinione"A lifetime ago?" The prince seemed mildly amused by this turn of phrase. As he gathered his silken robes around himself, which were worse for wear even they seemed to be of fine make. An older female Gettan had stepped close to him, evidently a bodyguard if judging by the armour she wore made of lacquered wood and metal plates.

Prince Wei looked over at Jo and Atale. Though he mostly spoke to the To'Ari he continued to threw glances at the Golem, possibly merely out of curiosity.

"You did come to wage the war, yes? I assumed you were a mercenary." There was a moment where he sounded almost disappointed.

After rubbing his chin for a little while the noble followed up with another question: "Or was it sooner? Have you been here before the war then? An expatriate from our grand nation? Well, who am I to blame you if you were. You might not know the current state of the kingdom then. Hard times there now as well. Not that it's something one like me is supposed to say."

He shrugged as if such rules of propriety were not for times of war, even though it was implied that this one was also over for him much in the same way it was for the squad.

"Dangerous times even. Under the surface mostly, unless you know how to read the signs." Prince Tay to wei did not elaborate what kind of signs he meant, and he moved on quickly before anybody could ask: "See, once these humans are crushed I assume all of these armed men that do not swear fealty to a lord or city will swarm over to Cruyt waiting to be employed by my father. My brother more likely. So much coin, but the iron pays for it all. Not all of us are so blessed."

"Then again not all of us want money at all," Wei mused in a way that alluded to the fact that he might be such a person. "That old Zaqrah pay you well?"

OOCSo we're continuing even though Atale did not really tune into this scene yet.

But I'll give you a free refresher of player and character knowledge. Yoshimi/Atale are not aware, but Eric and Jo'Seph would technically: Jo was guarding a platform for dignitaries at an Uxian summer festival a chapter or two back, and has heard from the princes own mouth that there have been assassination attempts on his live very recently. This is probably part of the danger he is talking about.

"I am glad you are safe, your excellency."
Jo'Speh bows awkwardly and slightly. He does not quite know what to say. The assassins have been stopped so far, but for how long?
Battling basic rouges in the streets, then a man made entirely of hands, a red herring investigation of a healing station....
The humans come from...where exactly? And what do we do with them?

When he has time. Jo'Seph will take a moment to look at maps of the world and try to get an idea of where the humans are from...

The golem pipes up in her odd, high-pitched voice. "I did not come to wage war, Your Highness. I came to dance! And hunt! And run through the woods and forests of a new land!". She giggles. "But war came to me, so I fought it and as always everyone learns the hard way not to underestimate the Ufan. But I got a new belt so it all works out." She twirls, displaying the gleaming strip of blue worm-hide.

Bura, Managh Island, Vinione"Glad I'm safe," the Prince said quietly to himself, his eyes fixed on Jo'Seph. Maybe there was a trace of recognition on his face, but then again who would have paid attention to a random guard about a busy festival?

"Well yes," the noble continued, perking up again. "I was in battle after all, but it's the least I could do."

Tay to Wei looked up at his towering bodyguard, but the older woman just stared ahead. If there was any communication it was silent.

"The ship is battered in any case," the Prince concluded before he turned to look down at Atale.

He studied her with his amber eyes for a second, his gaze wandering over the cracked crust and the strange new attire. "Ufan. Is that... what it is that you are?"

For a few seconds he did not know what to say, shaking his head briefly as if to shake the astonishment off. "There will surely be dancing very soon, but I'm afraid this place will not have good hunting for at least a season."

A smile played upon his face briefly. "Though it very much sounds like you have had the chance to hunt already. What a feat. I petitioned the Dimi generals for a skull, but they would not hear of it. I'm sure it will end up in the hall of the highest bidder, if I know Vinione right."

"They did offer me prisoners," the Prince said and clicked his tongue. "And I am inclined to take them up on this offer, if only to speak to these people. Really I prefer to pay my servants in one way or another. The master is a slave when he fears those whom he rules."

"I have an idea," was how Tay To Wei changed the subject. His female bodyguard inclined her head slightly and frowned, probably having had bad experiences with his ideas.

But the noble was already propositioning the two: "If you have the time I would have you tell me the story of the slaying of this monster. I believe you are not mercenaries anymore, yes? After the war, what does a soldier become?"

He laughed a little laugh as if he had told a very witty joke, but followed up quite quickly: "I can have some food prepared for you. There are still quite serviceable cabins on my ship."

And looking down at Atale: "Or something else? Would you like to see the end of this war? If we're careful I'm sure we can get close enough."

The Bodyguard cleared her throat, prompting Tay to Wei to lightly slap his head. "Of course, I still have an audience with the tradesmaster. Tell you what - you just think about it and send word to my ship. It'll be anchored below, you can't miss it."

"Actually," he said. "There were more with you to fight this monster, is that right? Maybe bring some of them along. There is space."

OOCAlright, just trying to keep moving this forward so we can get everything wrapped up.

So the question still stands: Are there any particular Npcs that you would like to bring along to wherever you will eventually go? If so, just meet up with them at a bar (or wherever) to talk to them next. You can even set up that scene yourself, go through the entirety of your side of the conversation. Go nuts.

I'm working with the general assumption that you will at least talk to the Prince, though hopefully there might be a little more happening afterwards. It's ultimately your choice, but since this is a noble there are many things that he could do for you, even if his position is not super ideal back home. So just think about what your character might want at the moment, and this guy could very well be able to make it happen. It certainly would not hurt to ask.

In terms of scenes it'll probably be this one > meeting with friends, picking out some npcs (or not) > talking to the prince > going to see the humans get their ass kicked and unravel some of the whys of the war > move on to the next adventure

It does not need to be substantially more than four five post cycles if you take a little more initiative. I don't mean write for npcs, but you can up the amount of things you say and do in a post slightly for such an epilogue bit of the story. I'll tell you if you ever overstep anyway.

About Maps: Not an exact science in this world, but one can get approximate maps of a wide area on the broken bridge. In general it's said that humans come from the north, and that is coincidentally also the truth. There is a whole wide continent there though, and you wouldn't easily find a map with all the details and so on and so forth.

But it's certainly something to ask around about - you do know that these humans supposedly come from a land called Caerphy.

Though the Prince also has access to all the generals and other military bigwigs, so he might be privy to what the interview attempts with the humans have yielded.

"I would like to see how it ends..."
Jo'Seph is still uncertain where to proceed. He is also uncertain how many, if any, of his companions on this journey he will ever see again,
He is not truly certain he wants to see them again.
After that horrible battle in the tunnels, he doesn't know what to do next...

Atale's eyes sparkle. "There is always good hunting, if you know where to look! I will gladly tell you how the blue worms were slain, and you will hear all you care to about the history of my people! But do not take the trouble to throw a feast for me, for the Ufan suffer not the weakness of hunger." She curtsies as the Prince departs and trots off to find Nkasa.

"You look lost, Jo'seph. Come with me and enjoy some story and song, and drink if that is your fancy. You fought bravely and deserve a respite. I go to join my traveling companions."
