Sayyida huddles close to Pacho. A frozen Rita, laying in the snow just outside their hiding spot, keeps watch. Little stirs in the frigid cold. Even the wind has died away to a soft brush. Sayyida has stopped shivering, which means she is either warm enough in her cold weather gear or her body temperature has dropped so low that she has lost sense of the danger and is freezing to death. Her eyes start to droop a little and she dreams she hears the faint voices of Winter Folk twittering upon the air. She smiles for just a moment, her lips sticking to her achingly cold teeth, and then her eyes snap open.

The sound is soft and garbled by distance and echoes. And as Sayyida listens, the pain of being out in the weather returns. Her finger and toes burn. She closes her eyes to keep them from needling her. Just a little longer and if luck favors them the gambit will run.

She nudges Pacho to her left, but says no words. No doubt he has already heard the pirates and figured about where they must be. Pacho is a clever sort. Perhaps too clever, but Sayyida would take a clever man by her side then a strong-arm. She had enough arm for the both of them and a clever man would keep her outa trouble on his own.

She waits with her clever man, hoping the message for them to move came soon. She hated waiting. It never sits well with her. She isn't made for it.

Tatsuo, Starting the Con"Quite, m'lord, but I think they have the idea," states the acolyte deferentially as he walks into view of the stairs. His accent hints of more native Darakyan or Aquan speaker.

Mako smiles a Take 10 on Diplomacy: 22.beguiling smile at the pirates, in the way sea serpents are beguiling. "The blood spatters and trails tell the tale eloquently enough without my lord's explanation," gesturing down the stairs and out the hall, all layered with the signs of battle. "The prison was empty when my lord arrived but recently."

Shrugging nonchalantly, "You can cry over the sea's cruel favor. Or hunt after the trail of your crewmates' slayers. You don't have much longer until your employers arrive to collect, do you?"

PachoThe warmth was welcome escape from the creeping cold of the early morning frost. Even bundled in these suits nothing seemed enough to keep it at bay, at least huddled together they could slow its approach. The message could not come soon enough, else they look as frozen as Rita. There was no warmth in her to hold the frigidness at bay, nothing left at all.

Pacho gave the pirate a nod, she was not too different from their host who slowly rowed her way to shore with her crew. Not too different, but it the way it counted leagues apart. Pacho doubted the lass beside him would ever slide her blade across an innocent girls throat such as Rita. He might, but she wouldn't. Her moral compass was still in tact despite her upbringing, something very rare indeed.

Pacho put his arm around her and pulled her closer and waited in silence for the message.

The stack of dead bodies kind of cut the appetite for any fighting from the pirate. Most of them look pale with a grim expression. They might be thieves, rapists and murderers, but they did all those things together as brothers in arms. There's a sense of great loss in the atmosphere, even the damn women who swing the tips of her sword in front of Mako and Ashfel doesn't feel like killing them. - " DAMN YOU old man, keep your tongue in check if you don't want to lose it, we are definitely not in the mood. " Somehow, the insults and taunt appear to be some kind of diplomacy among pirates. She calms down and to inspect the area. - " Stay where we can see you! Our business with the legion is none of your concern. " She climbs the stairs followed by her minions to inspect the cells.

The orcish male and his arrogant companion stay near the two strangers. - " I'm Conrad and this is Flint. So... where did you guys hear about the Legion? It's not common knowledge. If you know about them, you should know that they are not to f*ck with. Do you have a clue in which direction they escaped? " For an half-orc he is clean and elegant, holding his belt with his two hands, his falchion in its sheath. His human companion light up his pipe to warm himself, listening to what they have to say. Flint takes a deep puff and seems to feel a bit more relax, trying to forget about the pile of corpses.

AshfelRather than trade insults with the woman, Ashfel instead raised his hand as if to stop Mako from going on the offensive. He scowls behind his mask and steps aside as the woman brings her escort upstairs to check the prison cells. After she is upstairs, Ashfel spits on the nearby wall before the gentlemanly half-orc started to ascend.

The masked man hobbled back into the way of the stairwell. The more conversational of the two spoke and Ashfel nodded his head, directing at a side room, "Someone kept a nice assortment of letters and figures in that room over there. In the only unpillaged room of this place me and my associates found information more valuable than the paper it was scribbled onto. Though I knew about their dealings when they handed you lot an Empress's armory to plunder ships passing closer to the capital. It is hardly a quiet thing for royalty and nobility to go missing at sea on various ships." He then grumbles something under his breath, likely unkind about the Empire's navy before speaking up again, "Where they went? Oh yes, I never seen them go, but there was hardly a rowboat at dock, was there? All these men and not one shore boat to return on. If they were smart, they would be rowing along the coast til they reached trustworthy harbor. Yet to know whether it is a foolish choice or a smart one to make landfall at the first town they'd see. My choice would be to steal more supplies, take a ship large enough to sail and sell all the loot they could have carried to get them a crew that can take them to their destination...or make it to Darastar."

Mad Vixen Return- " That makes sense, maybe they used the rowboats, we did notice they weren't there anymore. " The orc struggle to follow Ashfel's analysis of what could have happened. His companion nearby push some smoke out of his lugs and is a bit more skeptical. - " It would be highly risky to leave the bay with rowboats with this hellish weather. They were a stubborn bunch of nobles, maybe they were crazy enough. They were a large group, they could have split too. "

A scream come downstair from the office, where the pirate loot was located. - " THOSE THIEVES STOLE OUR LOOT!!! I will slam their head on a marlin spike ye pig faced butt scratchin' scurvy baboon !" An expression of discouragement form on the half-orc and Flint face. - " Ah man, we are f-up, the three captains will skin us alive. " His companion remain calm and take another puff. - " They didn't have horses, so they needed the rowboats. I'm afraid you are right old man. " The pirates doesn't know about Renť's magical horse, which play in favor of Rana's story. Vixen is unusually calm, inspecting the cells, shackles and doors with a cold expression. She doesn't panic, but her face is about to explode in anger.

AshfelLetting the pirates voice their disagreements to his story caused Ashfel to grimace, but otherwise he let the lower men ramble. Though he does grumble to himself a bit after, "Pah, the only reason the nobles would split up if one was worried about the others selling them out. But if they break out and they do..." He gestures over to the corpse pile, "Savage work just to escape pirate's ransom...I think they would be more confident in ripping apart any other capture attempts sent their way."

The pirates still downstairs shouting about stolen loot and the reluctant agreeance of the pirates brought some smug satisfaction to Ashfel and his theories. But Vixen was nearby and she had a fiery temper. But the expression is one on the breaking point, so Ashfel only needed to push. So he did and called back to her, "There is a body missing isn't there...you had ten prisoners, but you knew that one of them was out of their cells. Dead in this case. Worth a quarter of their bounty, and now you have empty hands to show this Legion of Steel." He taps his staff against the ground, "Someone get to talking about them already! By the letter's words, they aren't sitting back and waiting for a delivery, they are coming here to make a trade." The man looks around, then paces down the stairs to where Mako is, casually bracing for a call to violence that may yet be started by the Vixen.

At the ground floor he looks upstairs to where the Vixen was, "You don't have long to prepare, and two heads make a better conversation."

A second ship appears in the bay
Conrad has another look at his fallen comradesand shake his head. - " Nobles are butchers, Camorian high-born did same to my whole clan that was living peacefully on our island. Woman raped and burned alive, children killed, men sent to work in their mines. That's how I became a pirate, to live free on the sea and fight what they call civilization. We should just have killed them all when we had the chance, they are a scourge to the world. " With a compassionate expression, Flint tap the large man shoulder. - " Yeah we had ten prisoners, one was dead. " The pirates were talking out loud that Rita body was missing, so it's not suspicious that Ashfel knows that a corpse is missing. - " Some hot Valkara's princess. The prisoners most likely took her body with them, those nobles have nine lives with their powerful cleric that bring them back. "

After her investigation, the voice of the harpy echoes from the cell block. - " WRAAAAAAAA!!! EVERYBODY UPSTAIR NOW AND LEAVE THOSE STRANGERS OUT OF IT. YE FORK FACED PANTY WAIST PUDDLE O'RAT PEE! " The half-orc back straightened and he quickly goes back to his crazy leader with the other pirates. Flint wait a moment that the other pirates are gone and turn toward the strangers. - " You stay downstairs and wait, we need to talk among brothers. Not sure what both of you hope to accomplish here, but if I were you I would stop provoking her. She can kill you just because you guys happen to be here. " He makes a half smile and is the last to disappear in the cell block, his warning sounded sincere.

Meanwhile outside, the shadow of a ship is slowly moving in the bay while the pirates begin to argue upstair about what happened. The vessel has three masts and looks like a military frigate without banner or colors. They can't see well with the snowstorm, as far they can tell this is not a pirate ship. The crew is working hard to finish wrapping the sails as they approach the pirate ship in the bay.

AshfelAshfel hadn't much time to verbally respond to the man that spared a moment to show a window of his life's story. Whether or not Rana were here, there would be no response to such a thing, for "why I became a pirate" sounds more like a gloomy conversation finisher than beginner. Though he did have a moment to raise his brow, "A Valkarian Princess..." Truly the pirates are right to make rumors on clerics, when it comes to potential only, however the truth is a more bitter pill to swallow. The dead could not rise after a month, and those that had families that could afford such a thing found infantile or child deaths to be too weak to return to their bodies. There is no telling how strong Rita's soul is, but there is no power in this verse that could get them to a cleric that could raise the dead for the sake of her family. The best that could be done for her is to return her home. 'How unfortunate that we need that body.'

The wench is back to shouting orders. Ashfel grumbles and turns to Mako, "Take a peek outside, see what has this lot shaking in their boots." He then points his finger to where Sayyida and Pacho are, projecting a whisper via message to them, "What is happening? The pirates are in a tizy about something. Are sails on the horizon? Our customers near?"

A heavy snow still fell and Sayyida huddled into Pacho. She concentrated on her breathing in order to deal with the frigid cold. The rise and fall of her chest a wakeful meditation. She was mostly successful, but every now and then something would disturb the quiet and she'd feel the pain of her frozen toes, or fingers, or how her teeth ached with each breath. She knew when the pirates had made shore, but not out of some magical or supernatural skill. Their cursing as they trudged through the snow to reach the warmth of the prison carried in odd echoes through the winter dead surroundings. It was bright and angry mutters in the snow bright morning.

When words suddenly sounded in her ear, Sayyida jolted to her feet and had rapier in hand before she even understood it wasn't someone nearby and only Rana's whispered voice in her mind. Her mouth was so cold she couldn't even spit. Trying to shake away the cold, Sayyida held a hand out for Pacho to help him stand.

"Finally. Hopefully we can get out of the cold. I'll climb up and take a look," Sayyida said to Pacho. She had scaled a mast and tended errant sails in heavy seas and a blowing storm. Climbing a tree was easy by comparison. Buckling her cloak tight, Sayyida finds a tree with width in its bones and climbs up to get a vantage point to see the harbor. At first, Pacho has no trouble seeing her climb, but as she gets higher some oddness of the light, or a trick of her cloak, begins to obscure her form and lines and Pacho has to squint to make her out in the branches. It is an uncommon thing.

He looses her for a moment when she is still and looking out into harbor and then finds her again as she begins to descend.

"Single ship coming in. Heavy, I think. But hard to tell. I could only make out the tips of her three masts," Sayyida says as she is near the bottom of her climb. Her voice is loud enough for Pacho to hear, but Sayyida isn't really talking to him but the voice in her head.

"Do we return," Sayyida asks while looking at Pacho with eyes that seemed focused on something else than his face as she leans close to him and brushes snow from his shoulders.

Looks better in a boxPacho was lost inside his head, his spirit trying to flee from the shivering frost of the morning when Sayyidaís shaking brought him back to the frozen present. He gave the woman curt nod as she helped him up. His gaze followed her as she disappeared into the upper branches and then he look towards the sea, trying to get as good view as he could of the vessel.

Soon she returned to the earth and passed on her information, brushing snow off his shoulders as she spoke. Pacho continued to stare at the directions of the ship as the masts slowly began to rise above the shoreline the wind carrying it ever closer to land.

"Did it look military?" Pacho asked, his voice slightly chittering from the cold. Soldiers as spies were always an odd sort. No matter how many insignia they removed, they could never wash away the stain of who they really were. This was the theme of the letter he had read, and hoped it would do the same for their transport, hopefully revealing a little more of their captors.

Sayyida begins checking the knots of the ropes that she’ll use to drag Rita’s frozen flesh through the snow.

”She’s got a Long nine at the stern. Couldn’t see much else with the snow,” she says in response to Pacho’s question. Very few pirate ships were equipped with stern and bow chasers. Long nines had range but only military ships were really built to tolerate the stresses of firing a cannon from the relative fragility of the stern and bow positions. Not only were pirate ships ill suited for such guns, few pirate captains would sacrifice the speed that long nines stole from them.

Tatsuo-Mako, Escalating the ConThe acolyte nods intermittently at the friendlier pirates chatter, "updating" the pair about the situation at the prison. Like a good aide, he leaves a wide berth for Lord Ashfel to keep the lead in the discussions. That said, it is not as if he has all that much to add to anarchist drivel founded on personal tragedy.

After the pirates make themselves scarce for the capricious pirate-wench, Mako nods to his liege, "Aye, m'lord." He makes a beeline for one of the windowed rooms facing the east. He listens to the magical exchange with a growing smile. He would not bet against that vessel being the Legion's. His whisper carries over their link, "That cellblock has no windows if you recall. Most likely panic & desperation at their straits have them there." A sly grin spreads as Mako watches it approach. "With any luck, the pirates here won't notice that ship before they land and we await to meet them. I'd suggest standing by outside until after a landing party arrives at the prison. Wouldn't you agree, m'lord?"

PachoPacho nodded his face feigning comprehension, his eyes glossed over with confusion.

"What does that mean for those us not born with the sea under our legs. " he said as heleaned over and began checking his sections of the rope on Rita's body.

He could tie a few knots, but like his knowledge of military ships it was amateur compared to a life long sailor.

”Long nines are cannons mounted fore and aft,” Sayyida responds gesturing with her hands. ”They fire upon a ship being chased or a ship chasing. But they can’t be too big as the stern and bow, fore and aft, and not made strong enough to endure the stresses. So they are small cannons that fire small nine pound shot with a longer slimmer barrel that gives them greater range see. Only ships that can afford their weight can mount them. Military vessels. Even if a pirate ship could mount them it is rare for a pirate captain to make use of them. Their weight, concentrated far foreword and aft unbalance the ships draft and buoyancy which steals speed. Pirates rather swift maneuvers and running. And they rather not take on any ship with cannons in number. They hunt and board merchant ships then run. See?”
