Nuxvar
right-aligned image
The atmosphere is less chilly as they walk away from the priestess of death, toward Nuxvar's dock. The northern wind is still trying to rip off their face, like sandpaper scratching their skin.

Two large ships are hanchored at the harbor, and at least fifty smaller fishing vessels that are covered and retired for the winter. The first significant ship is a two masts merchant boat, six guards covered with fur are on the main deck keeping an eye on all the crates piled up on the dock. Those northern men hired by the captain of the vessel for protection are well armed, they take their role seriously. One of them is drinking a bit of alcohol to keep himself warm in this hellish weather, there's no fire that will survive the wind by the open sea. The second ship has only one mast but is seaworthy, there's nobody outside, light is coming out of the boat cabin windows. This one is probably meant to carry cargo and passengers from town to town by following the coast, this kind of ship doesn't usually cross the sea often. Everything is calm except the sea that is screaming outside the bay, there are not many activities on the dock with this weather, but occasionally people walk on the street that surrounds the warehouse's city block of the harbor. The only notable building of the port is an old one hundred fifty feet high lighthouse made of large stone, there's something bright on top that is not a natural flame.

Tatsuo-Mako, Wild Goose ChasingMako and the rest of Ashfel's party make for the docks in short order. Along the way, he glances at their unexpected chaperone. He had been wondering a while what to make of the latest pirate. "Dante, is it? I take it no love lost with the murderous wench?"

Arriving at the dock, the acolyte regards the two vessels. "There don't seem to any other options for egress, m'lord." Turning toward Lord Ashfel, Mako crosses an arm across his waist and suggests, "Shall I inquire of the armed merchant vessel while m'lord checks on the smaller cabin? Even if our quarry boarded neither someone may have seen strangers in town."

Sayyida breathes deep the smell of the sea. Even the cold can't dampen her spirits when water comes into view. She looks out at the tumultuous bay and wishes to be chancing the wind and fighting a boat's desire to be safe upon the docks. The small swaying of the dock is nothing to her. It's rhythm is something in her bones like the smell of one's mother.

Stopping at the foot of the gangplank of the merchant ship, she nods up to the guards.

"Ho brothers. Weather be fine. How's yer fire an spirits," she asks before moving on, breaking character for a moment with the wonderful taste of salt and wind in her mouth. Dante is close by and she shrugs at him and then grimaces, regaining her dirty disposition.

The spray begs to strip Sayyida of her disguise and so she pulls her hood in close about her face and dampens the smile that plays about her lips. She could pilot either of these ships from this harbor. And oh what a ride it would be upon the white froth and crazy wind.

Dante Dante followed the others closely. He was one against four – not odds he enjoyed.

Though it would be foolhardy to strike against him so soon after dispatching the Vixen, he had no way of knowing their motives, but his instincts told him there was more to it than just a few thousand gold coins.

The Vixen? Dante eyes the questioning… Mako was it?

She was… unprofessional. Dante delivers the line flatly – it was the absolute truth after all.

She was cruel and capricious. Lustful and gluttonous. Had she returned to the ship she would have no doubt been turned out for letting such a lucrative payday slip through her incompetent hands. Pirates want two things; wealth and freedom – and her mistake had cost them one, and should the prisoners reach safety, perhaps both. Her death at the hand of the priestess was a mercy, even if the Lady Carr meant otherwise.

Dante looks around the dock, wondering where smaller row boats could have come ashore.

The lighthouse perhaps? The keeper surely would have seen the smaller boats come ashore?

FrachoThere was little trust amongst this motley assortment of cutthroats. Fred lagged a little behind to keep an eye on their new chaperone, always trying to keep himself right in the awkward blind spot of the monks peripheral vision.

As they got closer to the shore he lifted his hood to protect himself from the cold spray. He eyed the vessels and buildings turning his gaze back to his party. If anything there was at least enough to keep them busy for the time being.

As everyone else deliberated Fred fell in behind Sa’doshi to provide a warm face to whom whoever she conversed. Part of him hoped they find nothing, but if misfortune beheld any of his former companions, their corpse would be most useful at this point.

AshfelA scowl, though masked, is yet a scowl. That was the demeanor the crotchety Lord Ashfel wore after the Priestess rejected his proposals. It was a damnedable land and to continue out to where the wind once more picked up the chill of the water was not his idea. 'There were several other positions that were my idea.' The character mentally retorted. If it wouldn't freeze to his lips, he would have spit off to the side. Left with one of the pirates that seemed to show little loyalty to the Wench...or whatever her name was, she is dead now.

Ashfel had lead the group in silence up to this point, standing at the edge of the land he called out to one of the troop behind him, "Sa'doshi, you Darakyan cur, get over here." He tapped his staff, awaiting a response. Once he, or rather, she was by his side, Ashfel whispered, "What's the use of hanging around these parts? This blasted legion only seems to have fighters among them rather than planners. What do you reckon the chances are of hiring crew to head to civilized country?"

Ashfel looks back to the group, "Mako, Fred, and that pirate, you two check the lighthouse. Sa'doshi and I will see to the merchant ship yonder." The orders being given, he leads the way toward the merchant ship, taking a delay before calling out to the guards.

Tatsuo-Mako, Wild Goose ChasingThe acolyte bows with a grin. "As you bid, m'lord." Standing up, he regards the lighthouse's direction. Bearing a calculating smile toward their pirate companion, Mako says, "Shall we, my bold buccaneer?"

Mako appears rather single-minded upon their trek up to the lighthouse. Only sharp eyes spy the wary eyes about them, particularly the glances Dante's way. Eventually, the quiet breaks, "Concerning our earlier chat, from our brief meeting with her, I can't fault your impression of her. But was she so noticeably different compared to the rest of the crew? I thought those all but job requirements for the life of piracy."

OOCWhat are Ashfel's orders for Fred? He appears left out.

Sa'Odoshi moves toward Ashfel, her eyes rove across the others, back where they came, down the pier, out to sea, everywhere a threat could appear. With her back to the others, she leans over, her head bent a little, one ear to Ashfel, the thickness of her body blocking the quiet words that are spoken.

She raises and eyebrow at Ashfel's low words and shrugs her shoulders.

"Merchant not outrun frigate," she says in a soft response. Sayyida could escape alone, she knew this in her bones. In a small ship, she could hug the coast and sail in tight where the Legion's frigate could not follow with its deeper draft nor get close enough to see her course.

Merchant ships weren't meant for running. They were fat and lazy, slow to turn, slow to sail, and easy to hunt down. Even if they could steal the two masted merchant ship this moment and get her to sea, it would take luck or audacity to out sail the Legion. Luck was a promiscuous mistress. Some days she lay with more than one and some days she lay with none. So Sayidda only rarely counted on her warm silky touch rather than her innate audacity. But to freely sail from the Legion now would require a most dangerous route. Taking the merchant down the coast only delayed the inevitable confrontation with the Legion. They would have to sail straight out to sea with an attempt to cross it from the start. To do that, they would have to steal the merchant ship as she doubted its captain would willingly, coin or no coin, undertake such a foolhardy voyage. They would have to decide, on the spot, in haste, to take the ship this instant, throw the ropes, raise the sails, and scuttle into the deep. Waiting meant they'd have less of a lead on the Legion and Sayidda didn't think, no matter how cozy Luck sat in their laps, that the Merchant ship could outrun or survive against the Frigate's cannon.

"The bed is made," she says quietly while withdrawing from Ashfel and starting toward the merchant ship's plank. She castes a quick glance at Fred and then snaps her fingers at him as if calling a dog to follow her, a sneer of a smile on her face. She seems to do it just to annoy him, but in truth Sayidda knows Pacho has keen eyes and, if they're thinking of running, his insight of the merchant ship would be important.

"Come. Fred," she says playing the moderate animosity between them again.

Dante On the contrary, Mako is it? Dante continues hovering around his charges.

Pirates are not the reckless, peg-legged, drunkards they tend to be painted as. To be successful you must be highly organized, clear headed, and most of all – lucrative. Ships have rules, conflicts must be minimized, and profit maximized. There is a hierarchy, and there are rules. Everyone is expected to obey those rules. In return all men have an equal vote, an equal share of liquor and fresh food. Each member of the crew gets an equal share of the loot. The captain gets two, the first mate one and three quarter, the boatswain one and one half, the cook, doctor, and other officers one and one quarter. Dante breathes a deep frigid breath.

For many of these men, it is the fairest life they could possibly live. Where else in the empire do masters make only two times what the lowest rank makes? Show me a noble house that earns but twice as much as a peasant, and I’ll show you a black unicorn. Dante laughs breathlessly.

The worst sin a pirate can commit is stealing the loot. It robs each and every member of the crew of their right – their dignity. The Vixen’s foolishness stole a lifetimes worth of gold from much of the crew, she’d have faced a far worse fate back on the ship once the crew had learned what had happened.

Have you ever seen a keelhauling? A slight grimace crosses the usually emotionless face. She would be suspended, nude, by a rope from the mast of the ship, a weight attached to her legs. She would then be released, and crash into the sea eventually dragged along the keel of the ship. Water rushes and fills the lungs, but you are pulled back out of the water just in time to bring you back to life. The water here is frigid numbing everything as your body drags along the woody barnacle encrusted keel, tearing and ripping at flesh which stings in the salty water. It was certainly a kindness the Vixen was dealt with as she was.

Dante began making his way towards the lighthouse, but calls over his shoulder Don’t forget yourself Ashfel, I don’t answer to you.

FredPulled in two directions Pacho dragged his feet in following, deciding it best for let circumstance and chance decide. His gaze followed Mako and the pirate as their conversation deepened, trying this best to judge the threat their new friend posed. Pacho was hesitant to leave the spy a lone with the man, but as long as their little charade held the danger was unlikely something the spy couldn’t handle.

The turncoat stood quiet, listening as the pairs idolization of pirate life deepened as it joined in rhythm with the howling wind and the lapping of the waves. Pacho could almost lose himself cadence of his surroundings until Sa’doshi’s bossy shrills cut in, contrasting the picaroons poetic ideal with its hard reality. Pacho’s head turned and Fred shot her the dirtiest sneer he could muster, not wanting to let the lass one up, growing up with a twin he knew the folly of such action.

Tatsuo-Mako, Wild Goose ChasingMako laughs lightly, "I believe some mercenary companies and a few guilds work along similar lines." He shrugs nonchalantly, "If a group has the liberty to kick out or cruelly execute the incompetent and failures among them, then it is not hard to afford paying all well. 'Tis another matter whether exile or lesser pay is the fairer remedy." Smiling cheekily, "Were that applied across the empire, I'm not sure even we would make the cut, much less the average peasant or citizen."

Stretching up arms behind his head, he follows along up the path some distance. "So, don't steal the stolen from a gang of brigands?" he asks with a chuckle. "I'll keep that in mind." Leaning in a touch conspiratorially, "Don't mind Lord Ashfel's unique charm, my picky pirate. Our focus is the hunt."

OOCSo, which way is Fred going?

Nuxvar - LighthouseThe tall tower is made of thick large stones and is ancient as the ruined wall and the cathedral in the middle of town. The wooden door is abnormally tall, enough for a small giant to fit in. There's dim light escaping between the wood planks of the door, that are reinforced with metal bars. There are no alternate entrances, besides small windows over the visitor head that probably follow the interior staircase. After investigating around, there's no sign of traps or presence in the perimeters.

They knock on the door and after a moment an old bearded man opens up and look and the pirates. He's wearing layers of leathers and furs and only seems to be armed with a dagger at his belt. He frowns his forehead. - " Morning... ? " Behind him, the main floor is used for storage. A lot of supplies and crates at piles up under a wooden staircase is going up. A kid dashes down from there. - " GRAMPA? Who is it? " The little girl with curly black hairs peak behind the old man at the strangers, wearing humble clothes - " Oh... are you pirates? " The old man push her back a bit with an annoyed expression. - " Go back upstairs, it's cold. "

Nuxvar - DockAshfel and Sa'doshi approach the merchant vessels. The guards are not acting with hostility to their presence, merely curious about them. One of the bodyguards answers Sa'doshi's hail. - " Yo stranger. Goddess of the seaCelesya is pretty much pissed at the world right now. " He's a young men in his twenties, not particularly good looking with a medium build. The other guards look at the two strangers, without much interest, they are just two random pirates to them which is not uncommon in those coasts. - " What you guys are up to? Is that your friends who went to the lighthouse? " Meanwhile on the next dock, a man is just getting out from the one mast boat. He's cloaked, trying to protect himself from the storm.

PachoThere was an innate fun in the jabs one is able to deliver in guise, an amusement in finding the proper timing and circumstance to not blow your cover.

Fred might've been a cold miserable fool, but Pacho was grinning ear to ear at his chance to flat out ignore Sa’doshi and follow the spy and pirate to the lighthouse. He knew his victory would be short lived, she would strike back sooner or later, that was the game but until then he would savor his triumph.

Fred followed the good little henchmen, unsavory but competent. He kept a step behind and out of the way of his superiors conversation, always with a watchful eye on their surroundings, and on their new chaperone.

As they approached the lighthouse Fred checked the area and nodded to Mako when all was clear. The light keeper answered the door with little lady by his side, Fred gave the girl as foul a grin as he could muster before turning his back and making sure nothing was coming upon them from behind.

Dante Aye, little one, now mind your grandfather.

Dante speaks plainly to the old man, as the little girl disappears. I won't waste your time - we're looking for some stowaways who made off in the night with some of our skiffs. They couldn't have gone far, and making for the open water or the far coast would have been suicide. Did you happen to notice anyone come to shore in the night? You've the best vantage of the coast.

A simple question, with a simple answer. Either he saw them or not.

Dante preferred the direct approach whenever possible, as did many of the cold blooded northern folk. Practicality ruled here - they had limited time for flatter and milk and honey, both tended to freeze in the north.
OoCSense motive, 22.
