A new party of heroesSnow flurry covers the imperial capital, as a great danger to all the imperial citizens linger in the shadow slowly spreading his root through the empire. The lack of leadership among the nobles and military allowed groups like the Legion of steel to flourish and scheme to step up in the void left by the empress' death. Without a clear successor, the wheel of fortune was spin. The glorious leader put in the hat of succession several young people's names. Many already are dead or retired from the public scene. Meanwhile, the tension grows everywhere in the empire as the war between Imadyr and Matuzala is pulling in more allies and mercenaries. Sunalia and Patrenia at still at each other troat as the neutral party of Yuukan is working with both party to avoid a much greater war that could burn suck in all the nations of the continent.

With Tatsuo out of jail, Dante lead the party out of the The whole place is mostly the palace, you can see it in the first message of chapter 2.rose's city district. Followed by Patcho with his poker face, and Aurelia proudly looking forward the guards are opening the multiple gates to let them out of the district. They are surprised to find on the other side of the fortifications Rana who is waiting for her new friends after leaving behind the disguise of Madara. Shortly after, Gundrun the druid, Bulvar the bear, Orthos the seeker of hidden knowledge, Matuzalim the wandering gunslinger, Elizabeth the princess of the wind, and Sayyida the pirate maiden join up. With Madara nowhere to be found Rana introduces herself to the newcomers, though Matuzalim doesn't need the introduction.

In the middle of the catch up by the gate, a squad of eight Matuzalian royals warrior were waiting since a while now for Rana and Sayyida to show up. Lead by the Matuzalian ambassador Azoum Almasi. He makes a perfect reverence to the Sultana half-sister and a respectful gesture as well for the pirate. He explains that the war took an ill turned and he has been summoned back to Birone with all the available ship Birone has in Selarya's port. He's handing over a letter from the Sultana order, with a sending scroll so that Rana can verify directly with the Sultana that the orders are legitimate. Effective immediately, Rana is now the ambassador for Selarya. Only a skeleton crew of guards will remain to protect the embassy and the assets in there as she continues her mission. The letter also requests that Sayyida return immediately with the former ambassador Azoum, to be assigned as one of the admirals of the Sultana's fleet. Briefly she explains in the letter that the last naval battle was a fiasco and she decided to put her trust on new officers. After the investigation and numerous questions, Sayyida accepts to leave her half-sister behind and fight to protect the capital, as their quest is of no use if Matuzala perishes at the hands of the Imadyr savages. The pirate gives her an old Ring of protection +3, resist energy fire 10.ring of brass she found in a previous adventure to Rana as a farewell gift.

With Sayyida leaving, that leaves them as a strong squad of nine competent people, one bear, and nonetheless a mighty black cat. Everybody wounds are healed by Elizabeth who offers usage of one of her wands. Most of them are thirsty and hungry, it was a busy morning since the reading of the will and a rough morning for others who got their ass handover by the legion. Dante guides the party in a good inn in the temple district, where they can have a private room. It might not be protected from magical eyes, but it should be good enough to have a conversation without risking that someone is listing from the next table. A first round of Mulled Wine is distributed with bread, cheese and salami and sausages are distributed to get them going while the innkeeper, a Secretly a member of the iron bellfriend of Dante, has a stew prepared for them. They eat and drink before any meaningful information is share as each group has learned much since they left the chancelor meeting with sir Owen and Holy Mother Roseanne Arber.

RanaOn return, exhausted as the young royal woman was, Rana was able to rest long enough to dismiss any sweat with a flick of her wrist, and still her breath before the new arrivals. Of course, nervous she was as Mulazim, a familiar face from the past was among them. In the courtyard Rana had met up with Elizabeth once more, she addressed everyone with a smile and Sayyida by clasping her hands in hers. To the others she was businesslike, this was after all, her first meeting with all but Mulazim.

"I am Rana bint Jamal Al Motallebzadeh, cousin to Sultana Adira bint Abibi Al Motallebzadeh." Rana curtsies with one side of her dress, not knowing the status of the others, in fact. Returning to a neutral stance, she rests her hands before her waist, "I have heard that a mutual acquaintance, and my own cousin-" She beams a smile Sayyida's way before continuing, "Had rescued you. While you may feel indebted, I am not so callous to request you three to stay in our service, but these are...difficult times as you likely are aware-"

She was interrupted, the ambassador from Matuzala was apparently in urgent need of Rana and her dearest sister, half or not as she might be. Rana took the sending scroll offered by the man, and pushed it into her palm, causing the paper to disappear as if she had stowed it into her sleeve. She took the letter. The news, and the promotion with it, was rather troubling. While Rana had been effectively been given great protections and resources, these were things she was told that she could not use in the Empress's crazed trials. And that was not the half of it. The last day she would see Sayyida for a long while would be a summons and news that her relative is being promoted to some position as admiral after having been bloodied by two fighters at the bottom of a temple. The brass ring being all Rana could take after Sayyida's hand left hers, could only shed a single tear, and a kiss farewell, offering small prayer to Al-Zuna that Sayyida returns safely to her.

Though Rana had some immediate objections to leaving the relative safety of the rose district, she could dismiss her own complaints with a sigh and some minor trust in Dante to know of some safe location. Though she was certain to have suggested the embassy somewhere down the way, but it was unknown if the embassy guards weren't loyal to Imadyr in the current civil war.

After food had been served, Rana was the first to posit information, "From what Madara had told me, there is a secret passage under the temple, a trap door that lead into a cavernous space. There was where she found the prisoners, and a quite extreme presence by the Legion." She crossed her arms, "In my own progress, I haven't exactly figured out much more of this game the Empress had constructed, but a cozy little loophole is open to exploitation. Without allowing of the assistance or resources provided by our country, what we are left with are grassroots and and the clothes on our back evidently, however, we perhaps can hire mercenaries. And, while, they are unlikely to be of great skill it is more useful to have extra hands to be in the many places at once we need to be. In the case that those councilors are of the stodgy sort, I elect for Madara to be the one that goes about hiring any staff that we need. As for my position as ambassador...I have doubts there are greater duties for me to partake that do not involve chasing after these items, one of which is credibly believed to be under Al-Zuna's temple." She looks at Elizabeth, and the other three that had come out of that temple with Sayyida and herself in alternate guise, "Anything to report that I missed, soldier?" She asks, a slight edge in her tone, specifically toward Mulazim.

A new party of heroes- " So that you all known, we are after three items. A crown, A scepter and a sword that belongs to the empire. They have significant political and religious meaning. We have reason to believe that the Legion of Steel wants to collect them to claim power for themselves. The late empress didn't designate a clear successor, I will skip the details, that's political. If you are enemies of the Legion, you are welcome to help us in our quest. " Pacho noticed that Aurelia is tenser and less talkative since they release the half-Yuukanian from his cell. He didn't miss the chance to tease her with went overboard with a perfect Yuukanese dogeza meant for an emperor. She didn't say anything, but obviously it got her blood boiling, not sure how to interpret this Yuukanese protocol. - " We visited the Empress inner chambers and learned many things. The most relevant one is a confirmation that the sceptre is indeed under the Ziggurat as we suspected. We didn't learn clues as to how to get through the trials of the sanctuary. "

Elizabeth interject at that point with a calm and crystalline voice, the AureliaPatrenian princess is not upset about it and begin to drink to calm her nerves. - " On our end like Madara reported to Rana, we visited a shaft under the Ziggurat and found a sanctuary within a gigantic natural cavern with a formation of five tall dark monoliths in a circle and a very tall statue of Eryka made of stone. The Legion is digging up something in there. Judging by the amount of dirt and stone pilled up they been at it for some time. They took over the Ziggurat, killed many of Al-Zuna holy men and are posing as them. By now the guards have been alerted, so I'm not sure what they are doing about it. " Aurelia shake the wine in her cup, looking at the pieces of herbs floating in it. The warm liquid is quite welcome in the middle of winter. - " Interesting... They might dig for a while. I know there's a secret entrance somewhere my aunt the Empress was using to enter the inner sanctuary but I don't know where, it was her secret. As for the two other items of the regalia, the sword is with Agata Cotton, a former imperial officer halfling. In the empress' journal, I found two of her favourite locations in the bay of Myst where she could be hiding. " She doesn't mention the crown.

NPC's description for the new comersElizabeth Valkarana, Daughter of King Seldor Valkarana who was assigned to replace her sister death. She one of the cutest lady of the imperial court, with blue eyes like the sky and platinum hair almost white. She is athletic and a bit skinny. Kind, friendly and a bit naive she is there to avenge her sister Rana who got killed by a bunch of pirate hired by Agata Cotton. She looks barely an adult with that baby face. The baby princess appear to be harmless with this tiny rapier and a light leather armour to cover that blooming delicate body.

Aurelia Cornaya, Niece of the late Empress Helena Cornaya and daughter of Queen Elza Cornaya. She spent most of her teenage life in the military at sea and not at court. Aurelia is a priestess of the goddess of war Xydanyël. She is tall and has a good pair of round shoulders, muscular legs and generous breasts. Beautiful, but more lady-like than cute, she commands respect and fear to the commoners and the soldiers of the empire. The young princess has been known for been bloodied in battle and without mercy. The young lady is geared up with a pretty cool light blue metallic breastplate armor decorated with blue sapphires and a Kraken carved on the chest. On her shoulders, she wears a velvet royal blue cloak the same colour of her eyes. Her weapon of choice is an ancient mean bastard sword tied on her back, and a round shield with spikes all around it that she carries on her left arm. She doesn't wear an helmet, instead she has this large elegant hat with a lot of white feathers covering it.

Heroes GatheredTatsuo joins the others at Dante's selection. The mystic spy is a handsome and carefully groomed half-Yuukanian nobleman. His thoughts hide behind a courtier's smile that does not quite reach his searching eyes. His cup of wine receives only ginger sips. While gratefully, he only accepts a snack's worth of the meats and cheeses. He is affable without really saying anything. He opts for a seat near Pacho and Dante. curious chuckle prefaces when they begin to talk business.

Calculating eyes regard attentively each of the reports in turn. He chuckles ruefully. "Alas, trouble seems to dog our steps. Glad that you gentlemen were spared your captivity," he says, regarding the newcomers with a smile. "My regrets for the good master dwarf. His spirit return to the halls of his fathers." He raises his cup in a moment of rare reverence & severity. "Pity that Sayyida had to leave us, but duty is oft a pitiless mistress."

Resuming his affable air, Tatsuo strokes his chin. "It certainly seems that your investigations proved fruitful already." He snickers to himself. "Certainly more useful than my chat with a former guardsman, but you know what they say ..." He leans toward Pacho and voices what sounds like some aphorism in a OOC: Actually, it is Thieves' Cant for "What else did you uncover?"strange tongue.

Their journey back to the palace was conducted in relative silence, which in of itself was quite odd, at least for Gundrun and Orthos – in the time they had travelled with Mulazim, the young man had never been this quiet, even when asleep (his occasionally verbose snore on-par with Bulvor’s saw to that) but right now he was trailing along at the back of the party, hood hoisted high against the flurry of snow and his face mostly hidden, though the occasional flash as he looked up at the opening gates showed he was deep in thought, brow furrowed as whatever he was pondering weighed on him.

That changed however, when he saw the young woman who was waiting for them at the palace entrance. Her introduction was definitely unneeded by Mulazim, and despite the cold, he brushed his hood off of his head, as if he wanted to make sure his eyes weren’t betraying him, and when she curtsied, one side of her dress held up with the other held free and a mental image of an offered white flower flashed unbidden in his mind, feeling a slight knot in his chest, the same way an old injury might ache on a particularly cold day.

Rhany…

***

The inn was a welcome respite from the cold, and Mulazim was much happier with their present location than he would have been in a palace or even an embassy – much of his life prior to embarking on his journey to assist the heirs had been spent in inns much like these, and the knot in his chest loosened just a little at the loud, warm atmosphere around them. It was something familiar he could hold onto for a moment of control after the rather sudden impact of seeing Rana again. Not that the Gods seemed to be holding back on their humour, considering his seat at the table ended up being right across from the dark-haired woman.

Mulazim, for the most part, busied himself with the wine and food – being gagged and kicked around had a habit of working up an appetite, though he managed a time to introduce himself to Tatsuo and Pacho. ”Mulazim al Faez, freelancer and…troubleshooter,” He said while returning Tatsuo’s smile, showing absolutely no shame at unleashing that terrible pun. ”And we’re equally glad for your comrades’ intervention.”

The gunslinger was sipping from the mulled wine when Rana finally addressed him directly, but that edge in her voice as well as being addressed as “soldier” irked him but on the bright side, the flare of confused emotions he had felt earlier now settled into a familiar cold flame. That was how she wished to greet him after three years? Fine…

”Not too much more, my lady,” Mulazim said coolly, his bright blue eyes meeting Rana’s as he crossed his arms in turn ”The three of us were also in search of the sceptre for the better part of a year and ran into the Legion on a few occasions, and when we finally found the Sanctuary, they were there, waiting for us, and not their grunts either – veterans, and they had a cleric with them as well.”

A moment of silence, then he quirked a dry, half-smile. ”Good to see you again too, Rhany…”

PachoPacho kept his greetings to the newcomers short, keeping it to as little as a nod where he could. As the other exchanged warm welcomes he lurked in the background, doing his best to the forgettable everyman. His comrades seemed to trust them, but he still felt it best to hold his cards close to his chest.

He kept his longest farewells for Sayyida wishing her luck on her travels. He leaned into kiss her farewell on the cheek, quickly using the instance to whisper in her ear"Trust no one, send them all to the bottom.". He let her go, his face was cold and stern but his eyes were honest in their sincerity. He would miss the fiery woman, but he knew duty called.

The monk had chosen well, the cafe’s modesty masking quality that could exceed many of the gaudy establishments in the nobler districts of the city. He let out a small grin at the monks mention of the cooks but for the most part passed the meeting in silence, letting the ranking royalty have their say before speaking.

Ever since they released the spy, Corrello could feel the tension between the two. The subtle social jabs, the held back words, the daggery stares. Every so often he would shoot the mystic a vexing glare, his lips puckered with annoyance. He did not mean it personally but he had a role to play sucking up the princess, as the spy had his. They were both professionals and knew how to play off one another to accomplish their ends.

Pacho tensed as the spy leaned into him, rolling his eyes and clenching his jaw, feigning irritation at the aphorism. He responded to the spy in a rebuking whisper, as if not wanting a part in these silly linguistic games. The spy could hear his true The enemy is bigger than we thought, but you can trust the princessmessage though. hidden in his gestures and and faux irritation.

As with the rest he kept silent until spoken to. Deciding it best to let princesses decide the fate of their search for the regalia.

DanteDante didn’t have much to say to those who had newly arrived.

Their group was already leaking information, and it would be easiest for them all if they started to plug some of the holes. Sayidda was just the most recent of several who had been carried away by the sea, who have bits of information which could be plied from their lips and used against them if the Legion found them and set to work. And here, Rana brought back a group a lost puppy dogs who they were expected to house train and tend, while one of them was even foolish enough to make puppy dog eyes at her.

The thought of entering the kitchen and preparing their meals especially for them had crossed his mind, but there would be no way to move the bodies – and the nobles would need to die as well, as they were ever the thorn in the their side. No, it wasn’t an option. At least not now.

Eat. Prepare. Rest. We should look for the secret entrance. The easiest punch to land is when the target doesn’t know you’re fighting.

Dante Trust is in short supply.clears his throat before finishing his water and refilling his glass.

Perhaps Pacho, Tatsuo, and I should hunt for the secret entrance while the rest of you run interference? After we find it you can retreat and join us.

A new party of heroes- " I thought to punch in the face was your specialty? " She closes a fist with her long fingers. - " I suggest we let them dig all day while our new friends rest and attack them in the middle of the night when they are tired. We should wipe them out while we can, or they will attack us later on their own terms. "
Aurelia sip from her cup with her full red lips. - " We can look for the entrance after without risking been attacked from behind when we get into the inner sanctuary. " Elizabeth claps hands elegantly while giggling. - " Glorious. Any plan that involves killing some legionnaires is excellent. "

DanteYes, of course - I'm certain they don't have boundless reinforcements. Dante was certain to lay the sarcasm on thick lest the it be lost upon the ignoble.

These women could run to their deaths if they so desired, Dante had other plans.

RanaWhen Mulazim said her name in such a way, it brought back memories that Rana had rather not recall in current company. She averted her eyes from the newcomers and addressed the other princesses, "While I am the first to agree with a summary execution for the lot of these treasonous lot, their numbers and skill give me pause. My beloved Sayyida had taken near fatal wound fighting two of them, with the other being entirely blinded, while these persons had provided assistance in bondage." She rested her hands in her lap and closed her eyes, "While I might be underestimating the troops at home have in the way of skill, these Legionnaires are quite the veterans, and too well equipped to be a simple coup. If I could take leave of sanity for the briefest of moments, I would say that the Emperess herself could have selected her own usurpers. And like our fast ally had helpfully pointed out, we do not know how much of a number they have. All we have that is concrete is that Agata Cotton is somewhere in their hierarchy and has an ominously-named artifact in her grasp, but my intuition gives me great doubts that she is the tip of the ziggurat. After all, the legion is coordinated enough to do away with all of the priests attending the temple of Al-Zuna and replacing them overnight with not a single whisper of trouble reaching the ears of the palace."

After a moment's pause, Rana looks about the table, "If you are to return to the temple, and search for a secret entrance, I recommend as much stealth as you can handle. I...I personally wish to push the objective out of my mind and find a different avenue. I want to find some evidence, some documentation that gives me an idea about the Legion's command structure, their bases, their numbers, their suppliers, and how deep are their roots in the empire. If we find out that the leader of the legion happens to be the chancellor or everyone on that council, this entire contest to find artifacts will be rather pointless, wouldn't it?"

Heroes GatheredTatsuo nods in greeting to the 'slinger. Quirking his smile wider at the pun, he replies, "Pleased to meet you, troubleshooter Mulazim. Tatsuo d'Aidendale, at your service." Raising a brow, he glances between the Rana and Mulazim. He thought nothing of the cool response earlier, but the 'slinger's reply is quite telling. "Oh? You were previously acquainted with the Ambassadress?" he nonchalantly asks. His eyes flick between the two as they glint with questions unsaid.

Tatsuo laughs lightly as if amused by whatever Pacho's retort. Shaking his of the mirth, he sips on his tea cup. He watches among the plan suggestions. He does look a little more curiously at Elizabeth after her comment. 'Little more ... aggressive than I reckoned.' He says, "Worthy sentiments and cautions about the temple ... and our quest in general. How deeply the parasitic Legion creeps might shift our priorities. Still, it is Her Imperial Majesty's will we carry out, and the Empire will need those artifacts ... among many other things ... to be restored to health." He smiles broadly as he leans back. "But these are but hypotheticals until we have a way to investigate them." He shrugs. "If the Ambassadress has any ideas how to investigate, I, at least, am open to suggestions."

Looking up, the spy taps his chin. "The gist of Her Highness' plan sounds promising. Against seasoned numbers exceeding ours, we certainly wish every advantage we can, such as refreshment and surprise." Turning to the monk, he feigns a smiling obliviousness to the sarcasm. "Oh, doubtless, Brother Dante. But it does no harm to be extra cautious. No sense lingering idle while comrades recuperate from their ordeal." He winks with a smirk at Rana. "As the Ambassadress knows, we can prove quite discreet when we wish." He sips again from his cup, but his eyes turn rarely sober as he nods reassuringly to her.

A new team forgedWhen Gudrun woke, his first thought was of today's affairs. He'd be meeting the noble folk he sought out for ages. The imperial heirs. Dilligently he got to combing out the knots in his beard before he forged it into a nice braid. He barely managed hanging the bronze ring in his dwarven pride before the uproar in the courtyard reminded him of the time. Bulvor, what did you do?
The man caught himself pacing towards the door before he cursed the weather for being so cold. Gudrun returned to his bag, snatched a woolen jerkin and his thick mantle from it before pacing away. As he stumbled out the sleeping cell he removed his pipe from a pocket sewn in the robe. Before long he had it burning and filled the air around it with a smokey aroma. As he approached Bulvor calmed down, and slowly walked over to it's master's side. From there Bulvor quickly de-escalated the situation. Everything was just about in order when he noticed his friends gathering to meet with their new employer.
Without much fanfare he introduced himself: "I'm simply known as Gudrun Rankorst, 'fraid I've got no titles as fancy as yourself, but I've got my arm and my wisdom to offer. I'd much enjoy a chance to lend my hand to heal the realm. Not enough kind folk on the road these days."
The dwarf didn't offer much in the way of concrete planning and plotting, not here where they might be overheard.

A tavern scene? As the group made their way towards a tavern Gudrun was allmost dissapointed. He liked a chance to let his skills speak for him, and with himself still quite drained from being captured and what not cooking might be the best chance he got to make a fair impression. On the other hand, it was nice to let himself be pampered for a bit. The worldshaper broke his fast on baked eggs, which he ate sandwiched between a piece of bread, his rumbling belly also moved him to ask for some beans, bacon and cod. To chase it all down he requested a glass of milk. Any questioning looks would be answerer by a "It's much too early for ale or wine." Sure, that might be a strange saying from a dwarf, but he'd barely eaten anything in days and he needed his head perfectly clear to enjoy it. Allthough his sober clarity only made him note how he'd do it differently.
In between bites Gudrun tried to speak some words of wisdom, but whenever he had his mouth empty to speak, someone else beat him to it. Eventually he managed to get his mouth mobile enough to speak, and he held a hand for his mouth to keep his tablemates from witnessing the ravages that was Bulvor's half-chewed breakfast. "Perhaps we could do with some rest first. I'm not so quick to recover from bondage as you young folks, and I still feel ragged meself. Perhaps we can all spend some time looking for anything to help us in uncovering this legion of steel, and then retrieve the sceptre later on. Let them expend their resources for a day more, less for us to dig out."

A new party of heroes- " We should act tonight while we can. " The princess swordman listen to what everybody is saying, her azure blue eyes meeting the bottom of her cup more than looking at the companions that were imposed to her by fate. She likes wine for sure, her family has a reputation for been heavy drinkers anyway. Whatever she noticed the sarcasm from the monk or not, there's no reaction. Elizabeth participates more in the discussion. - " I can be very discreet, not a problem for me. " With her divine charm, she winks and giggles innocently. - " Still, a confrontation with those who are digging seems unavoidable. Can't we just not kill all of them and interrogate survivors with magic? We encountered one of those veterans officers in the Ziggurat, and he was human enough to be broken by enchantments. Unfortunately, someone attacked us and I couldn't learn much at the time except that they were looking for the scepter. "

Pacho"I agree we should act fast. A distraction while other search is likely the best solution. Be that an assault or another form, their strength does give me pause and rather not give the followers of Xydanyei the honor of a warrior's death."Pacho said gesturing to the monks suggestion of a punch in the dark. It reminded him of an old combative instructor who told him it was the one you don’t see that get you.

"With the guards informed, even if only window dressing their is bound to be at the very least the show of transition. I say we spread the word beyond the guards, any in power you might know. The more eyes on the issue the harder the legion will have to work to keep up appearances, and more chances we will have of slipping in." Pacho looked down at the table and took a sip of his tea.

"Plus given how long they have been digging our time might be short depending on how much they know" the cutthroat looked around at the new arrivals, he wondered how much he could trust them. His job has taught him long ago though one did not need trust to be useful, just aligned aims.
