e: Storm Sorcerer and Swashbuckler are both in the SCAG, but it looks like that the person who had PMed me about it doesn't have that available well, no problem!
Anyways: everything in waterborne is a-ok! The minotaur has the blurb about the dragonlance setting but that doesn't matter, they just weren't discovered earlier in the FR. Still, they are exotic, so a background would need to reflect that

Feature: Choose one type of animal (horses, dogs, hawks/falcons, snakes, fish etc.), whenever you encounter an animal of that type you can determine its breed, general physical condition and you know general information about it. For example, upon seeing a guard dog you can tell it is a siberian husky that is poorly fed by its owner and that many huskies favorite food is fresh venison. This feature does not tell you the hit points or any stats of the creature, simply the general condition of the animal.

Been wanting to get into a long running game with this character for a while so Ill do my best to come up with a compelling app.

The PCs are in a cave with some boulders and a natural spring, they are sitting around their badly awesomly drawn fire.
(These are obviously hand drawn by an extremely talented artist, yours truly, and hopefully they'll add a bit of tabletop flair to the play by post format it's nonpermanent marker on laminated paper btw, so it is pretty oldschool )

(In case you can't read my writing - I had the phone in one hand and held the marker a bit awkwardly, normally my handwriting isn't thaaaaaat bad - the blue says: "magic missile" and the brown "pew pew pew" (she is dual-wielding hand crossbows, and for some reason yells "pew pew pew"! I don't know!).

Appearance: The picture well describes his appearance, except that he is probably armed with something two-handed like a warhammer or battleaxe, (as silly as that image may seem).

 

Alignment: Chaotic Good
Background: Outlander (I have no family and do not remember them, I live off the land and keep to myself, except when the opportunity for something great reveals itself.)
Traits: I feel more comfortable alone than with people, though I wish it weren't necessarily so. I learn lessons from any situations, drawing from my surroundings.
Ideal: Acceptance. I want to be an equal part in something, no matter how big or small.
Bond: I have no family or friends, so I must make a name for myself.
Flaw: I am slow to trust anyone, even those of my race. My trust must be well deserved.
Hook: Bandits, nooo!. (Those filthy bandits are up to no good!)
Faction: Factionless, seeing as Andter lives in the woods.

Andter worked the knife into the boar's flesh, glad he found food to last him a while. Having no one to teach him, even from a young age, Andter had to learn how to hunt, hide, and many times, fight for his life. Though excited about his kill and that he would soon be eating some fresh meat, Andter knew to never drop his awareness. He heard the faint crackle of a fire. That was never a good sign, not in this forest. The only people who traveled through these woods either robbed or would be robbed. Andter left the boar carcass, quietly making his way towards the sound of fire, soon hearing voices. Bandits! Andter pressed against a tree, holding still and listening carefully to their dastardly plans. (Dunno if this fits the story or not, but just an example!)

Blurb about yourself:I currently play some tabletop D&D with friends and family, but all campaigns I've played thus far have been pretty role-play sparse. So pbp seems like a very neat way to fuel both my desire for role-play/writing and smashing goblin skulls! Appearance: Dwarf, 170yrs old, male, 5'7", green eyes, tanned, long black beard & mustache tied at the end, bald, a few wrinkles, wears modest brown robes with the symbol of 'The Order of the Gauntlet' on the shoulder. Keeps a ring tailed lemur as a pet, usually on his back or hanging on his beard
Class: Monk (will decide subclass later)
Alignment: Chaotic Good

Story:

Not much is known about Jangu's childhood. Born to a strange union of eleven mother and dwarf father, his parents moved to The Dessarin valley when he was just 22 (that's like 7 in dwarf years). Although he was born a dwarf, he's taller and more lean compared to the average dwarf. He helped his parents in the traders shop, and most people just saw him as a lucky dwarf, but the natives all knew and found his family very strange.

His personality didn't help him fit in. Maybe it was because of his ostracization by the community, or maybe he was ostracized because if it, but he always acted a bit stranger than the rest. He spent lots of time out in the woods, playing with stones and wading in rivers, far away from town, sometimes for days and eventually, weeks.

On one particular trip he stumbled upon the monestary of The Order of The Gauntlet. The monks there trained for life and we're basically a preserve force in case of calamities. Given their reserved nature, very few people knew where to find them, and even fewer ever payed a visit, but Jangu felt right at home. After staying for a few days, he asked the temple monks if he could stay there. The eldest monk sat him down, and told him that if he stayed, he would never be able to return to a normal life. Jangu replied by saying that if he had a normal life, he never would have found them. They agreed.

And so he wrote a letter to his parents, stuck it onto a pigeon, shaved his head, changed his name to one that suits him better, and, at the age of 43, began his new life at the temple.

He began his training there, attempting to quickly catch up to the younger trainees. Turns out he had talent. All that time in nature made it easy for him to connect to it, and for it to communicate with him. Like most of the monks, he made friends with the local wildlife, adopting one of the lemurs that inhabit the treetops.

And so he stayed, practicing and meditating, for nearly 130 years. But the great spirt has decided that there is a new purpose for him. The younger monks can't see it yet, but there is a disturbance in the balance. It feels slight, yet it gets heavier by the day. Something is happening. He told the other elders about his visions, and it was decided that he should be the one to restore the natural flow. So he packed up, picked up his lemur, trimmed and combed his beard, and headed towards the valley. His sight was an unusual one, but after a short reunion with his parents, someone from the Order pointed him to the town of Red Larch, where the bandits there have been unusually active. Figuring he had no other leads, he made way, his lemur swaying with his beard as he marched.

 

Traits:
Jandu has an air of mystery to him, often seen as wisdom. People have claimed that he gives a faint glow when he meditates, and often stops to stare into space as if he sees something others don't.
When not in battle, Jandu is often very calm, placid, mannered. But when facing enemies he battles with rage and strength unseen in his normal demeanor.
Ideals:
The darkest night is when the brightest stars shine.
Bonds:
I am very loyal to my friends at the monetary, less so the order, and more so to the balance.
Hurt his pet lemur, and you die...
Flaws:
Having spent many years in the only in company of other monks, Jandu's behavorisims and character can seem quite odd to other people, making him stand out and preventing him from making friends easily, despite his good nature.

Hook:
Dark Omens
The signs and portents are clear: nature is out of balance and disaster is drawing closer with every passing day. You need to restore the balance of nature.

 

The forest was quite jittery, crickets and frogs in chorus with the night, fireflies mixing with the stars. Jandu was on his favorite hilltop, meditating. He'd been there for six days now, although he didn't realize it. The rainwater had collected into a pool nearby, and his lemur, Kiki, was drinking from it. It air was chilled and it smelt like more rain was coming. Kiki crawled over to his master, and very lightly tapped him on his shoulder. This time he woke.

Jandu opened his sapphire eyes to the depths of the forest. He felt the cool dew run down his nose. He uncrossed his legs very, very slowly... Stiff as tree roots every time. It would be a while before he could stand. Kiki climbed up his beard and hugged his neck, squeaking a welcome back into his mustache. He'd been collecting nuts in a heap for them to eat. Right next to a bush of berries too, Jandu started to wonder what he'd done earlier to deserve this. He pulled a treat out of his pocket and gave it to Kiki, who took it and rushed onto his back, disappearing behind loud crunching noises.

Jandu began to process his visions. Unlike the the almost utopian scene here, not too far away he could sense the heavy feeling of blackness at the far horizons. This time it was heavier, and more certain. Unfortunately it was too far away to fully comprehend. He needed to get closer...

He picked up his stick, stood, filled his pockets with nuts and berries, and began to descend down the hill.

 

*So Jandu here is a bit of an odd fellow. I kind of intend him to help lighten the mood, a bit of comic relief, but he can get pretty serious in battle.
*His pet lemur doesn't fight, nor would he ever let him. Kind stays on the side. Also should mention it's the great great grandson of his first lemur (lemurs don't live 130 years).
*I hope to be a good enough writer to flesh this character out (but I don't have much experience I admit, but I feel pretty confident), just don't be surprised if he does something unexpected.
*The great spirit I mentioned, I figured as a monk he'd have this connection to a greater force in nature so I called it the great spirit but I doubt it'll get mentioned much unless the DM adopts that idea (or a similar one)

So more or less done, might make small edits of an idea come to me. Any feedback would be great! Thanx!

Appearance: Taman is a tall, thin human. He is older, but not old, with his light brown hair beginning to turn grey. That greying hair is a mess of waves and curls that looks like it hasn’t been brushed in quite some time. By contrast, his beard is well-kept and looks freshly trimmed. Big, bushy brows shadow his green eyes. He has a thin, angular face and a long, narrow nose. His skin is tanned and weather-worn which adds to the appearance that he is older.

He is dressed in a tattered green tunic that is layered over similarly tattered clothing in tans and greys. He has a long, grey cloak that is fraying at the edges. The cloak partially hides his backpack and the neck of a viol that pokes out over his shoulder. A braided rope hangs loose around his waist with six long, white fangs hanging from them. Attached to his leather belt is a rapier, the hilt of which is one of the few parts of his outfit that looks new. The other is a pair of sturdy boots.
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Background: Variant of SoldierInvestigator
Traits: 1) I’m haunted by memories of war. I can’t get the images of violence out of my mind. 2) I’m always polite and respectful.
Ideal: Live and Let Live. Ideals aren’t worth killing over or going to war for.
Bond: My honor is my life.
Flaw: I obey the law, even if the law causes misery.
Hook: Find Her!
Faction: Not a member, but under the employ of someone who isLord’s Alliance

Thick, lumpy gruel falls from the spoon a foot above the table to land back into the bowl. With a low sigh, Taman returns the spoon to the bowl before pushing it away. The wooden bowl scrapes across the table before he folds his hands together and looks around the dingy inn in which he finds himself.

Next time, Rein, request a stipend for expenses upfront.

Perhaps he can be excused for overlooking such a thing, however, as he is not used to being away for this long, and travelling for an assignment is a new turn of events for him. A shrug of Taman’s shoulders sends the last of the light drizzle that collected on his cloak falling to the floor. The sound of the pattering drops reminds him why he decided to stop at this place that is little more than a hole in the wall.

"Any port in the storm, as the traders would say," he murmurs to himself, taking in the others around him. Farmers and blacksmiths, traders and trappers. It was unlikely he would find anyone here that would know anything about the woman he is searching for, even if he wasn’t still a day away from where she was last seen before disappearing.

Like every night since he left Waterdeep, Taman Rein takes in his surroundings and makes sure there are no faces he has seen any of the other nights – to make sure he isn’t being followed. Once satisfied, he leans back and, also like every night since he left Waterdeep, reaches into one of the waterproof pouches on his belt and pulls out a roll of parchment. After unfurling the roll, he looks at the small image of a young noblewoman. It was one of the few things he was provided when given the assignment. A picture, a last known location, and a name. Not much to start with, but he’d worked with less before.

Blurb about yourself: I started playing Advanced Dungeons and Dragons in elementary school. Then in university I played 3.5, Mutants and Masterminds, and some Macross RPG. After leaving university I was without a group for a number of years until I joined RPX three and a half years ago. Since then, I have played in a number of 4e games and ran a 4e game for 2 years. I have been playing in a 5e conversion of Scales of War for over a year and this is my only active game at this time. I also run a 5e game for some of my work colleagues and friends, and one of my players has started a Lost Mine of Phandelver/Out of the Abyss campaign in which I also play. I’ve been a supporter of RPX for the past three years and don’t have any plans to leave anytime soon.

 

Taman’s family had always been musically inclined. Not professionals, but music was always filling their home in the evening. Thus, it came as no surprise when Taman also took up playing on his own. It did, however, surprise his parents when he announced he had joined the Axe of Mirabar as a drummer. The laws of Mirabar are strict and punishment swift and unwielding. It was this upbringing, along with being around so many dwarves who held the honor of their families in such high regard that fostered a strong respect for the law of the land in Taman.

Taman was a member of the militia for three years when a party of raiding drow attacked. Before he knew it, the body of his commander had fallen over onto him, pinning Taman to the ground. It was that man’s death that allowed Taman to live, as he was shielded and overlooked. When he finally made his way back to Mirabar, his story was questioned and his honour badly damaged. Only he had survived and many outside of his family wondered how he could have made it back when none of his fellows returned.

In order to spare his family what he believed was his shame, Taman left Mirabar and journeyed to Waterdeep as part of a caravan. There, his partial training in the Mirabar militia was expanded upon and he joined the city watch. He spent five years slowly rising through the ranks of the watch. During this time, his dedication to the letter of the law was not lost on his superiors and other people of power within the city. He was given the task of investigating other members of the watch and to weed out corruption.

Eventually he was brought to a secret meeting with one of the Masked Lords of Waterdeep. A noblewoman by the name of Savra Belabranta had disappeared in the vicinity of the Dressin Valley and the Masked Lord bestowed upon Taman the task of locating her. With little choice, for he could not refuse a request from one of the Waterdhavian lords, Taman took a leave of absence from the Watch, finding it very easy to have his request granted and he headed off in search of the last woman.
