Storm King's Thunder

Game NameStorm King's Thunder

Game SystemD&D 5e

ThemeWorld-spanning exploration

FlavourRP-focused, quasi-sandbox

Background/Plot Summary(From the adventure book)

The Savage Frontier is a cold, rugged, sparsely populated land of snow-capped mountains, rocky hills, sprawling forests, and foggy vales. Isolated strongeholds, ancient burial mounds, and the ruins of many forgotten empires dot this vast landscape. Bounded by the Sea of Swords to the west and the desert of Anauroch to the east, the Savage Frontier extends as far north as Icewind Dale as as far south as the town of Daggerford. Old roads stretch across this great expanse, linking the dwarven strongholds and mines in the mountains to the coastal settlements, frontier towns, and fortified outposts of humans and other folk. These roads are long, lonely, or poorly defended, making them dangerous to traverse. In fertile valleys, towns and cities have sprung up, separated by dozens if not hundreds of miles of untamed wilderness haunted by bandits, barbarians, and monsters.

Evil dragons stirred into action by their dark quess, Tiamat, threatened the settlements of the Savage Frontier for a time. Ultimately, they were defeated and forced to withdraw to their lairs, while Tiamat was banished to the Nine Hells. Fear of the dragons’ wrath has faded quickly with the coming of a new threat: giants. The peoples of the North are no strangers to giant incursions. Frost giants have long claimed the Spine of the World as their demesne, and hill giants are known to scrounge for food in the untamed hills. But now, in the past couple of months, giants of every kind have emerged from their strongholds in force to threaten civilization as never before - and not just frost giants and hill giants, but also stone giants, fire giants, and cloud giants. All of the giants are in an uproar. Reports of giant attacks throughout the North have reached the coastal cities of Luskan, Neverwinter, and Waterdeep, stoking fears that the giants are waging war against humans, dwarves, elves, and other small folk.

Character CreationStats: Point buy or standard array
Sources: Player’s Handbook, Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, Elemental Evil Player's Companion, and other 'published' sources are allowed. Unearthed Arcana will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Races: All non-monstrous. No human variants.
Alignment: Non-evil
Backgrounds should include references to places and characters to allow for integration in the main storyline. Your background should end with your arrival at Hundlestone on the eastern edge of the Spine of the World.

I do not have a specific 'required posting rate'. Instead, I will expect people to post when they can and not be upset if an update assumes they go along with the majority if they have been unable to post for whatever reason. In my experience, this is much more likely than trying to hold everyone to a specific rate of posting. Things happen. People get busy. I will understand and expect the same understanding in players.

Application Deadline: November 11th

Currently Approved UA Material: Gunsmith Artificer (The Thunder Cannon does 2d6 damage and creates a loud boom out to 150 feet (its normal range) and audible out to 600 feet (its maximum range). The Artificer can use a small charge of gunpowder to reduce this booming sound to 30/150. Doing so reduces the damage to 1d10. The sound can be further reduced to 0 feet. Doing so reduces the damage to 1d8.

I feel like this will help to balance a bit with the fact that Artificers also get a CR 2 construct at level 6. You can do more damage, but risk drawing the attention of more enemies, or you can reduce the risk of drawing attention at the expense of damage.

Note, I am not a 'numbers guy' so this may need to be tweaked further.
With modifications); the Ranger, Revised

Backstory Option: Here are a few interesting tables to help create your background. Rather than use the tables as intended (roll d100's and select the options to make your stats), please make your stats and then use items from the table to explain why your stats are the way they are. (This is completely optional and is only meant to help introduce interesting elements in your backstory.)

I've included an example:

Nothing set. Likely around the end of May. Four weeks should be enough time for anyone interested to put an application together.

Name: Baz Moonfist
Class: Paladin
Race: Mountain Dwarf
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Background: Acolyte
Trait 1 I can stare down a hell hound without flinching
Trait 2 I'm full of inspiring and cautionary tales from my military experience relevant to almost every combat situation.
Ideal I always try to help those in need no matter what the personal cost.
Bond Those who fight beside me are those worth dying for.
Flaw 1 I am inflexible in my thinking
Flaw 2 I am suspicious of strangers and expect the worse of them

History: Baz Moonfist entered into service at an early age, even for a dwarf. His father, a priest himself, sent Baz to learn the ways of Dumathoin, the dwarf deity of underground exploration and protector of the Mountain Dwarves. It was there that he was picked out for his profound ability with a hammer and sent for military training. A few months later Baz found himself holding the banner of the Acolytes of Dumathoin in the battle of the Greypeak Mountain. There they held back the Stone Giants who inhabited the mountains and had come into conflict with dwarven kind. It was only a matter of time with one living on the mountain and one living in it, but the battle was fierce and the commander he had found himself under was vastly incompetent.

It came to a head when winter had fallen and there was a cold so bitter a dwarf could break his beard off. They had caught the trail of a specific tribe of the Giants they had been following when suddenly they were set in ambush. Two of the acolytes were trapped beneath a boulder thrown down upon them when Commander Gloin called the retreat. Baz dropped the Regimental banner and when rushing toward the fallen dodging rocks from above. He slammed his hammer into the boulder splitting it in two and allowing him to push it off. Baz then carried both of the injured dwarves to safety leaving the colors behind. Commander Gloin called him into the tents that night and when Gloin threatened to discharge him on insubordination Baz showed him just why he was called Moonfist blasting the dwarven commander in the jaw. Knowing Baz was considered a hero among the other Acolytes Gloin couldn't discharge him so he had him transferred to a border fort after receiving 40 lashes. It was there that Baz would find some of his toughest tours in the military.

Shortly after he arrived a horrible bout of food poisoning went through the camp. They lost many of the officers a over half of the soldiers had fallen ill and were bed ridden. When a Giant Horde approached to assault the camp they were out numbered and left with no way to defend themselves. In an act of brave stupidity Baz challenged the leader to a battle of champions. The Giant named Stonehand was unarmed so in a even more foolish maneuver Baz disarmed himself for the sake of honor. Unarmed the dwarf could do little to the stone skinned giant and easily was defeated, but he had earned enough respect from them that they decided to give them three weeks before returning.
He was then granted the title of Officer and Tactician and was put in charge of defense of the fort. The dwarf did not waste any time arming the fort with ballista and a large moat with a collapsible drawbridge around it. When the giants returned Baz and his dwarven acolytes drove them back. They were vastly outnumbered and Officer Moonfist found himself running from one ballista to another cranking it to let it fly as the drawbridge collapsed as they planned. He then lead a mounted cavalry unit to chase down the remaining stone giants and drive them from there area.

Word of his exploits on the border fort finally made its way back toward Stormkeep and he was then met by a summons and transfer once again. Baz did not know what was next but after his short time at war with the Stone Giants he knew he could handle it.

Name: Bovur Fell-Hand
Race: Hill Dwarf
Class: Artificer, Gunsmith
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Faction: Lord’s Alliance
Physical Appearance:
Bovur is a lean and wiry fellow, standing in at an average 4’4” and weighing 145 lbs, with rough hands from hauling cannon to the gunwhale and rappelling down ropes. His coarse beard is kept roughly trimmed so that it may be covered by his helmet. His copper skin is pockmarked and occasionally discolored due to alchemical experiments as a child. His piercing blue eyes, as bright as a flash of lightning, shine with a keen intellect and attention for the smallest detail. A bit of his left ear is missing, a result from ship to ship combat with the a storm giant, for which he is lucky considering the circumstances.

Background: Sailor
Personality Traits: Ruthless in both trade deals and war, let's make a deal!
Ideals: Respect the Code, then yourself. All other things come after
Bonds: The Banuk floating port of Mirak-Thur holds my allegiance. I explore, trade, and fight for the honor of my clan.
Flaws: The rush of claiming new sources of Aether and gold is a tough high to match, and I will do almost anything to gain either.

Backstory:

Generations ago, the Banuk Clan was part of a large dwarf kingdom known as Kazvrak in the eastern foothills around the Grey Peak Mountains. They acted as the bulwark of defense from the wild lands beyond their borders. Over time, the human and dwarf allies they protected became too comfortable in their positions and soon their aid in both military strength and prosperous trade soon ran dry. Desperate to protect themselves from constant orc raids and hostile wildlife, the Kazvrakians focused all their resources on a melding of alchemy, smithing, and arcane magics to produce Aether, a rare arcane metal that allowed many new things possible, the most formidable of which was the Aether Rifle. Devastating firepower now protected dwarf fortresses where gods and allies had failed before, but new strength encourages challengers.

With such a rival in his way, Warchief Thromkar united the roving bands of orcs under his banner and attempted to conquer Kazvrak. The dwarves knew they could not face this onslaught alone, and so resolved to flee their ancestral homeland. A few clans, including the Banuk, used their knowledge of Aether smithing and created Sky Ports, floating cities powered with Aether and gold. Over time, the dwarves who lived in these cities lost their stone sense, for they cared little for earth now that they were no longer bound to it. While still a hardy people, these Sky dwarves placed much more focus on the advancement of their Aether smithing than on the martial prowess that had won them renown in ages past. Each Clan established their own Sky ports and they trade amongst each other the goods their expeditions retrieved throughout the world, as well with the locals along the Sword Coast.

Bovur was on a mining expedition as a fighter escort to the Sword Mountains along the Sword Coast. When first arriving on station, the Aethernaught company marines had to push back against a wild human tribe that was performing sacrifices to their profane dark gods upon the mountain top. Though fierce, the human barbarians stood little chance against massed volleys of Aethershot fire. Scores of humans were brought low in the initial skirmishes, and seeing no way to best the dwarves themselves, the humans retreated further down the mountain. There they continued their sacrifices and rituals with renewed vigor while still probing the defenses of the mining camp.

Months passed as the dwarves delved deeper into the rock, extracting as much gold as the camp could store before the relief fleet of air-frigates and cargo transports arrived. Thankfully, the barbarians must have given up removing the dwarves from their lands as the raids ceased and the humans seemed to leave their lower encampment. Once the relief fleet arrived, reinforcements took over the outpost and Bovur's unit boarded the sky vessels for a journey home. This was not to be however, as they were ambushed in the clouds by a rampaging Cloud Giant. Seeing their ancestral foe upon rage amongst them, Bovur and his squad's frigate volunteered to stay behind to act as a distraction to protect the rest of the fleet. The Sky's Vengeance fought valiantly, but was torn asunder by the giant's bare hands. Bovur was among the few survivors and now works as a mercenary out of Waterdeep with the constant attacks by giants keeping him plenty busy.

I added an application table to the original post. I also added this for anyone who is having trouble adding some flavour to their background, or anyone who wants to add a little bit more to what they have already started cooking up.

Backstory Option: Here are a few interesting tables to help create your background. Rather than use the tables as intended (roll d100's and select the options to make your stats), please make your stats and then use items from the table to explain why your stats are the way they are. I've included an example:

What's your opinion on the Plane Shift: Zendikar booklet? Specifically, can I play a Kor ranger?

here's a link

http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles...kar-2016-04-27

P.S.: are you also using the rules for class assignment and level advancement? And looking at your example, you want us to use point buy, but also use the different paths to explain the point purchases?

I'm not using any of the rules from the Life Path Method. You should create your character as per the normal rules in the PHB and then, if you want, use the Life Path Method to explain how your stats and skills developed in your backstory. It's just an option for those who want to try it. You don't have to feel that you must use it if you don't want to.

If it's possible for me to, I might apply for this. I can confirm Gin's fantastic at tone and setting a scene, for to whomever gets in, it'll be a treat.
