Moon over Graymoor

Moon Over Graymoor
Set within the Forgotten Realms
Adventure begins at Level 1
Application Deadline is November 30th @ Midnight Pacific Time

Game NameMoon Over Graymoor
Game SystemDnD 5e
ThemeMurder in a small town?
FlavourDark, murder mystery. Set in the Forgotten Realms, and is standard D&D fare. This isn't a campaign, and is instead a standalone adventure ideal for new players(as close to a one-shot as we can get in pbp).
Game Summary
The GameYou hoped that the small town atmosphere of Graymoor might be a fine place to spend the winter months. The thought of wiling away the cold snowy days in the local Tavern, sitting by the fire, sharing tales, and sharing ale would be easy. However, murder has come to town. Is it simply an argument gone wrong, a case of mistaken identity, or something more devious and sinister. Will you have the nerve to investigate, and find the person responsible.

I thought I'd give a few specifics about the game as well. This isn't meant to be a long running adventure or campaign. It is really designed to take about 3-4 adventurers from level 1 to level 2. I know many don't like the character "squishyness" at level 1, but I've been wanting to run this little story for some time. This game is a detective story, and you shouldn’t expect to mow down goblins. You should expect to puzzle over hints, squeeze people for the truth, and keep a paranoid eye on your back. What little combat there is will be short, sharp, and bloody- but not unfair. You’re going to have plenty of time to figure out what’s going on. This game is based on the module of the same name, and makes a fine starter game for any of you that are just starting out. New players are definitely welcome here.

DM infoBefore you go farther with the rest of this game advertisement, I’d like to post a quick bio about me. I realize I'm fairly new to the site, and that may cause many to pause, so I thought it would be good to let you know where I'm coming from. I’ve been playing and DMing rpg’s since the 80’s and have really found myself in a pinch with work and life so just can’t seem to work a regular game in. Even with some of the online tools, committing to a set schedule is pretty hard so enter play by post. I know that doesn't remove the risk that I won't have the staying power for this game, but I wanted you to know. I've been running another game on this site for the last few months, so I'm hoping to step into another.

Technical Details
Sources Allowed:I want to keep things to the PHB only. Anything in the PHB is fair game, but no other sources for character development will be used in this game.

Setting:The town of Graymoor is found in the northern reaches of the Forgotten Realms (not really), but the setting won't play a large role in this game. We'll use the Forgotten Realms as a base for our world, but we will not worry about strict adherence to the details.

Posting Rates:Please be prepared to post at least 4-5 times per week. We can post more than that if it works. Of course things happen, and we can always work around absences if we have a chance to discuss ahead of time. If a person falls behind on their posting, we’ll just assume you’re following but will take no actions. I’ll make an attempt to contact you, but if too many times where you fall behind then we’ll look to replace you in the game.

Character ApplicationInterested in an investigative mystery? Sound like a good way to save the town, increase your reputation, and make a name for yourself? I’ve been thinking hard about the application process, and looking at a bunch of games on here and other sites to try and find a good way to do it. If you want to try your hand in this here game then please make a post below. In that post include two things please:

1. Tell me a bit about what you enjoy about RPG’s and what kind of game you enjoy playing. I’d ask that you keep this to 1-2 paragraphs only. Please include some detail about your level of experience.
2. Character description in paragraph form. Tell me about your character in 1-2 paragraphs. In this you can specifically call out your class and race, or you can imply it by your description.

There’s no need for a list or anything of all the character information, because if selected we’ll do that together. Don’t create a character sheet unless you really want to, but know that I won’t look at them yet. Since we aren’t worrying about character sheets this shouldn’t come up, but please don’t roll dice in this thread.

At the end of all this, I’ll try and do my best to get 3-4 players that would fit well with this game and with each other. I am interested in offering some opportunities to newer players, but I'll accept interest until Midnight Pacific Time on November 30th.

Thanks for checking out my game.

Given the desired posting rate, how many months would you think it would take to complete the adventure?

Well that's a bit hard to anticipate. I'd think, and this depends on the players of course, that it'd take maybe 6 months. A little less or a little more maybe, but something around 6 months for a pbp quicky seems about right.

I'm interested! I realize I'm new to the site but I plan on sticking around.

The PlayerNew to the site but not to gaming. I've been gaming for nearly a decade, playing mostly pathfinder, but I've dipped my toes into 5e. I'm sure I could pick it up pretty quickly, especially with the time PBP allows. I put aside a lot of time for these games in my week, it's my favorite stress reliever. I've not done much DMing, I'm trying it now for my group but I think my favorite thing about tabletop gaming is crafting and stepping into the role of my character.

I really like to try and become someone else for a while, make choices I myself wouldn't make. I think I'll enjoy the slower pace of PBP to allow me time to process events through the lens of my character. I always look forward to getting together with others, meeting new personalities and putting our minds together to work through fun scenarios and team problem solving.

The CharacterKyrha Mordainne's eyes are often hidden behind a pair of round, green tinted spectacles. These, combined with a severe countenance usually give others the uncomfortable impression of being observed by someone distant and guarded. Counter to this, Kyrah seems to wear her personality and strong sense of individualism on her literal sleeves. She has taken it upon herself to customize a set of robes given to her to denote her status at the college. Affixed to her white robes are an array of beads, pendants, and green silks. Like a smile that doesn't quiet reach the eyes, Kyrha seems to have a personality that doesn't reach her face.

When speaking with others Kyrha values directness, despising small talk. This isn't out of a sense of unfriendliness, but often comes across as such. Kyrha is interested in studying magic that reveal the truths of the past and future. She believes it to be an underappreciated art among mages who seek power in it's more direct forms. In order to put her lessons in practice she has left the halls of the university. Being human she faces few questions and little suspicion when traveling between most towns and cities run by her kind.

About MeI’m fairly new to playing RPGs, but have followed streams like Critical Role for a while. I wanted to get into D&D but didn’t have a group to play with. Eventually I found a group and have been playing 5e for about two months now. I hadn’t heard about PbP until recently and wanted to try it out to get a D&D fix when my group can’t meet.
While smashing things with cool weapons is a bunch of fun (my other character is a barbarian), the narrative side of D&D is the most fun for me. I love making unexpected characters and the collaborative storytelling that happens within a group. I’ve been known to have my characters make decisions that result in less than favorable outcomes because those choices are the ones that fit the story.

About the CharacterMalachi does not like attention. Being a tiefling is hard enough without having a spot light on you. So Malachi sticks to dark corners, where he has a better chance of going unnoticed. With his dark grey skin, black hair & eyes, and onyx horns, it was easy to mistake him for a shadow if he’s being quiet. He learned to survive by sneaking under the radar.

Malachi learned his stealthy ways, surprisingly enough, as an acolyte to Kelemvor, god of the dead. He was taken into the temple when he was abandoned at their door as a baby. As he grew up, it became clear that some of the elders in the temple were not true followers of Kelemvor. Instead, they were disciples of Bhaal, the god of murder. The followers of Bhaal took over the temple, forcing those faithful to Kelemvor to go underground or become victims of the cruel rituals dedicated to Bhaal. After years of hiding, Malachi fled in the hopes of getting away from the tyrannical zealots that desecrated Kelemvor’s temple. And so, he finds himself in the tiny town of Graymoor...

Quote:
Milo Gurness was a young man that tired of working the farmer's life. Recently, with the popularity of gladiatorial combat on the rise, the local aristocrats found that it would and could become a good monetary gamble. With the money from the local aristocracy backing the venture many smaller arenas began to pop up in the smaller towns.
Some of the more capable men rose to successful status in this new entertainment and those that failed had added their own bodies to the heap from which they stood on top. This did not phase Milo, like many other young fools who think they are invincible, he felt he was good enough to climb to the top, but in reality had no more experience in killing another person then a successful writer had smithing. Having sold most of the valuables though, he gained the equipment to do so and he set out to prove his worth, but will he succeed or die?

About MyselfI am a GM for Pathfinder IRL but never seem to get the chance to play. With the lack of Pathfinder options on this site I have found a reason to start dabbling in 5e. I am looking for some good games that take players learning a new rule set. Other RPG influences are mainly video games.

About BillamBillam is a portly halfling residing within the woods near Graymoor. He lives a simple life in his solitude. Making due with the provisions of the wilds. His clothes are made of leathers and wrapped in furs he has hunted to stay warm and keep well fed. He keep to himself, busy building his traps and whittling away the hours. Billam only comes into town when he needs what nature can not give him.

It was on one of these occasions he had entered the market to trade furs for some cast iron pots and skillets. Billam stopped by the tavern, pushing himself into the high stool with his walking stick. As he drank his ale and quietly enjoyed a bit of food he could not help but overhear everyone's conversations. Apparently there had been a murder, not that it greatly concerned him. But with nothing better to do while his new pots were prepared he thought learning more would be a good use of his time.

If I were going to create a character, it would be Mr. Chan, a human monk, or monk-rogue, depending on what level we start at.
He is lawful neutral, and heavily focused on getting at the truth.
His main flaw is his inability to be indirect or discrete.
I doubt he would use a lot of magic, or magic-like abilities. He might hire people with divination magic, however.

Me: I'm a middle-aged guy who has been playing various RPGs for over thirty years. My first D&D books came in a little red box. I love immersive roleplay and collaborative storytelling. I'm new to this site. Hope I didn't miss the deadline. I'd welcome feedback on the application whether or not I'm chosen.

A character: Brom Two Scars is running from himself. He is the son of a great hero among his people, judged by a wise-woman to be destined for greatness himself. He earned his name before his thirteenth year by tracking and killing a gnoll that had taken his playmate, though he himself barely survived the ordeal. He fell in love with Stenna when they were only children. She was the son of his father's closest friend, and their fates were intertwined… Or so Two Scars always believed. When he came upon her with Green Path, he slew the other man in a fit of rage. Faced with the tribe's justice, his courage failed him; Two Scars ran.

He came to Graymoor with the spring, that awful day two years behind him. His strong back made him welcome during the planting season. He is friendly, gregarious at times, but formed no close relationships, earning copper with honest work. He works hard to convince himself that he is a good man who did a terrible thing, but from time to time a great fury makes him question himself.

I think there was some confusion about the deadline. Applications are still open until tonight at midnight. There is 18 hours to go.

About MyselfI have been playing Pathfinder for about 2 years now. I joined this site to try and learn other systems. This seems like a good opportunity to dabble in 5e. As of right now I am a new GM for Pathfinder IRL for a family group and I would like to gather more influences so I can better myself as a GM. The story looks fun and everyone loves a good mystery.

About Glazzig"Classic Glazzig' is a phrase, in his hometown, used often when someone steals the spotlight. Glazzig is a dwarf who loves being an entertainer. Don't boo him while he is preforming though, he's been known to get "rough" with the audience every now and again. His goal is to be a well known musician, and so far he is on the way to becoming just that. Along his path to becoming a great musician, his next stop is the town of Graymoor.

What RPGs Mean to MeEscapism, a fairly succinct word that says a lot. Each time I see a new post, or meet around a table, I get to live a new life of my own creation. I may have a terrible, almighty game master(dungeon master, keeper, bartender, narrator, guide, loremaster, storyteller, referee) but at least I chose my lot. I lean toward games that allow me to encourage pc interaction, developing friendships or rivalries. I'm also a sucker for romance. I've been avoiding reality for as long as I remember. I insist everyone's first rpg is make believe as a child. All that aside, my daughter is teething and keeping me from sleeping so I keep on dreaming in my role play make-believing.

Organized pretend, I've delved into it for over two decades. Remember when data storage switched from kB to MB? Yeah... me neither. But I still owned paper floppies. I've played countless games and have run 1/3 as many.

About the CharacterIn her lazy attire of chemise, hose, and belt, Sable Hollis lounges by the tavern fire, living off her savings. Her chin length hair can easily be mistaken for a boys. And while she lounges, her loose clothes and modest proportions cause a little gender confusion. She sports a few nicks on her chin and carries her thin frame with poise. Anyone who wants to join her by the fire is welcome so long as they respect the calm.

The woman's fingers, clasping her mulled wine, are scarred and callused. Her left wrist has a swath of smooth skin with light bruising. Both are signs of repeated use of a bow, likely in deadly combat. Sables dark brown eyes are expressive and, at this moment, are telling you that she's seen too much. She doesn't say much at first but will warm up after she finds a common interest.human ranger

NOTE: I have a small introduction as to how she got there and why she's in her current state but I'll leave it out to keep the app page clean.

I'll guess we all have some juicy backstory waiting to be told
